  Clayton, Cecil Leroy “Roy” -

Roy Clayton, 66, died Monday at 10.30 P.M., at Rosary hospital

in Corning, just 30 minutes after he arrived at the hospital.  He had lived in Lenox all his life and had been a painter for the past 45 years. He was a bachelor.

 

Survivors are one sister, Mrs Elsie Holben, a nephew, Gene Holben of Lenox and 4 other nephews and 3 nieces.

 

Funeral services were Thursday at the Bender Funeral Home with Rev H D Butts officiating. Burial will be in the Lenox Cemetery.

Clayton, Cecil Leroy “Roy” -

Cecil LeRoy Clayton, son of Berry H and Emma Clayton, was born in Union County near Kent, Iowa, January 16, 1888, and passed this life January 9, 1956 at Rosary hospital, Corning, Iowa, at the age of 67 years, 11 months and 23 days.

 

Roy, as he was known to his friends and neighbors, grew to manhood in this community.  He had varied experiences as a

painter but spent his time of recent years in Lenox where he resided the last nine years in the home of Mrs Minnie Belding.  When a young man he professed his faith in Christ and became a member of the Methodist Church.

 

His parents and two brothers, George and Harry preceded him in death.  Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Elsie Holben of Lenox [nieces and nephews, also many friends and relatives.]

 

Funeral services were Jan. 12 at Bender Funeral Home, the Rev. H D Butts officiating.  Burial was in Lenox Cemetery.

Coburn, E A  -

O E Bricker of Lenox received word Monday afternoon that his brother-in-law, E A Coburn, of Des Moines had suffered a fatal heart attack at his home. Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon at the Highland Park Funeral home in Des Moines. Burial in Des Moines Cemetery.

Donaldson, Lillian -

Mrs Lillian Donaldson, 83, of 8l2 Pleasant Drive, Des Moines, former Lenox resident, died at a nursing home in Des Moines, Monday at 10 P.M. She moved to Des Moines 10 years ago. She was a practical nurse.

 

Survivors: 1 daughter, Mrs Fern Hainey of Des Moines; 2 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were Wednesday at Bender Funeral home with the Rev. Cecil Simonton officiating. Burial in the Lenox Cemetery.

Donaldson, Lillian -

Mrs Lillian Donaldson of Des Moines. Iowa, passed away January

23, 1956, at the age of 83 years. She had been in failing health for some time and death was attributed to heart trouble complicated by pneumonia. She was a former Lenox resident but resided in Des Moines with her daughter Fern Hainey the past 10 years. A son Orville preceded her in death. Besides her daughter she leaves two grandchildren, Mrs Paul Williams of Des Moines and Mrs Jeanette Quories of California and 5 great grandchildren.

Edmunds, Fern Bruington -

Mrs Hugh (Fern) Edmunds, 65, died at 4 a.m. Jan. 18 at her home

in Winnemucca, Nev., after a long illness.  She was a sister-in-law of Mrs Blanche Bruington of Lenox.

 

The daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Eugene Bruington, she was born in Warren Co., Ill., Dec. 4, 1890. In 1912, she married to

Hugh Edmunds and in 1913 left to make her home in Nevada.

 

Mrs Edmunds was a member of the Community Methodist

church, the Woman's Society of Christian service and the Ladies

Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.

 

Besides her husband Hugh Edmunds, she is survived by two sons, Kenneth Edmunds, Ogden, Utah and James Edmunds, Saskatoon, Can.; one daughter, Mrs Donald Engstrom. Winnemucca, Nev.; four

grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs Grover Ely of Vancouver, Wash.; Mrs Fred Wilson. Lake Crystal, Minn.; Mrs J V Wynn, Council Bluffs, and a brother, W. D Bruington, Springfield, Ore.

 

Funeral services were Jan. 21 at Winnemucca with burial there.

Haas, Bertha Smith -

Mrs Bertha Haas, 71, died Thursday Jan. 12, at the home of her daughter in Rock Island, Ill. The body was brought to the Bender Funeral home where services were held Sunday, Jan. 15, conducted by the Rev. H D Butts. Burial was in. Fairview cemetery.

 

Bertha Smith, .daughter of Amos and Delia Smith, was born on a farm east of Lenox, Iowa, July 16, 1884 and passed away at the home of her daughter in Rock Island, Ill., Jan. 12, 1956, at the age of 71 years, 6 months.

 

On March 15, 1915, she was united in marriage to Fred Haas, also of Lenox, and spent her entire married life on a farm in this vicinity. To this union 3 children were born: Mrs Velma Godden, of Rock Island, Ill., Mrs Lyle Stoaks of Conway and Mrs Raymond Stoaks of Ames who preceded her in death.

 

Upon the death of her husband in 1941 she moved to Lenox for a short while and then to Ames where, she resided with her daughter and family, Mrs Raymond Stoaks. This daughter was overcome., by a lingering illness, and passed away in April, 1944. Mrs Haas courageously stepped, in .showing her true Christian faith, and mothered the children left behind.

 

In 1950 she moved to Rock Island and lived with another daughter Velma Godden and later when her husband passed away she again, took up the task of caring for another grandchild while the mother

worked.

 

She was ill only a few days before her Maker called her home sparing her from any suffering.

 

She is survived by the two daughters, Mrs Lyle Stoaks, of Conway, Velma Godden of Rock Island, one sister, Mrs Pearl White of Marshalltown, eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many friends and distant relatives.

Haggerty, Luella Gertrude Alexander -

Mrs, Jess Haggerty, 71, died Sunday at Rosary hospital. She grew up on a farm northwest of Lenox and at present was living on a farm southeast of Corning. Her husband preceded her in death.

 

Funeral services and burial were Wednesday. She is survived by a son Lawrence, two daughters, Mrs Opal McKay and Mrs Elizabeth Means, all of Corning.

Haggerty, Luella Gertrude Alexander -

Luella Gertrude Haggerty, daughter of Andrew and Sarah Alexander, departed from this life after an illness of several weeks at Rosary Hospital, Corning, Iowa, Feb. 12, 1956 at the age of 71 years, 2 months and 3 days.

 

Gertrude Haggerty was born December 9, 1884 near Mercer Center where she spent her entire life.  On December 14, 1910 she was united in marriage to Jesse O Haggerty who preceded her in death in 1947.  To this union were born three children, Opal, Mrs. Florence McKay, Elizabeth, Mrs. Shelburn Means and Lawrence Haggerty, all of Corning.

 

Survivors include her children, also three brothers, Carmon Alexander of Lenox, Ernest Alexander of Kansas City, Kan. And Frank Alexander of Tingley; two sisters, Eva Rundlett of Lenox and Edna McAfee of Davenport,  5 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

 

Gertrude Haggerty united with the Methodist Church in her youth.  She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Johnson, Charles W. -

Charles W. Johnson, 66, son of Mr and Mrs Nels Johnson was bom in Illinois, Oct 26 1889 and died Feb. 5, 1956 at his home in Loveland, Colo., following only a days illness.

 

He was married July 25 to  Lillian Bye, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Bye of Clearfield. They made their home northeast of Clearfield for many years. To this union were born one daughter, Mrs Alfred (Lucille) Blanchard of Creston; two sons A-lc Robt. Frank now in service in Sturgate, Eng., and Loyde at home.

 

Mr Johnson followed farming until he moved to Creston where he was employed by the city.  Two years ago the family moved to Loveland, Colo.

 

Besides the wife, Lillian, 2 sons and the daughter, left to cherish

his memory are the son-in-law Alfred Blanchard, two grandchildren Connie and Robt Charles Blanchard, two sisters Mary Bossart of Allendale, N. D., and Jenny Brand of Diagonal; four half sisters, Marie

Adkisson and Frances Clark, Diagonal, Bernice Madden and Lurene Slater of Kent, one half brother Clarence Johnson of Lenox.

 

He grew up on a farm 8 miles east of Lenox and was a nephew of H C Reynolds, a cousin of Claude, Pearl and Guy Reynolds, Leeman and Everett Nelson.

 

Funeral Services and burial were in Loveland, Colo. His daughter Mrs Blanchard went to Loveland to attend the rites.

Larson, C. A. “Gus” -
C A (Gus) Larson, 74, retired farmer, died Sunday, about 4:30 a.m. at the Rosary hospital in Corning. He was born in Sweden, and had made his home In Lenox since about 1924. He was born Jan 1, 1882.

 

Mr Larson was a life member in the Lutheran church in his native land. He came to America at the age of 18 and has been a resident of the state of Iowa ever since.  He was married to Mary Krohmer on Nov, 20, 1926.

 

He is survived by his wife, Mary, a daughter by a former marriage, Lila Brown, of Earlham, Iowa; and a step-son, Arthur Larson, of Omaha, Nebraska.

 

Services were Wednesday at the Bender Funeral Home, the

Rev. Willard Morris officiating.  Burial in the Lenox cemetery.

McGrew, Una Alma Seller -

Mrs Una McGrew, 88, died at 1 A. M., Monday at the Lenox Rest Home. Survivors: her brother, C R Seller, of Lenox with whom she made her home until her recent illness; 3 nieces, Miss Phuma Ray, Mrs Bertha Toland, both of Lenox and Mrs Florence Symonds of Cromwell.

 

Mrs McGrew had lived in Lenox most of her life except for the 2 years at Grand View, Iowa.

 

Funeral services were Wednesday at 2 PM, at the Bender Funeral home with the Rev. Harold Butts officiating. Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

McGrew, Una Alma Seller -

Una Alma (Seller) McGrew daughter of Milton H. and Sarah Jane Seller, was born October 7, 1807, in Greencastle, Indiana, and passed this life in Lenox, Iowa, February 6, 1956, aged 88 years, 3 months and 30 days.

 

At the age of 10 she came with her family to Iowa where they

settled on a prairie farm near Conway.

 

On February 17, 1900 she was united in marriage with Hilton

U. McGrew, of Grandview, Iowa. Following the marriage at the bride's family home they made their home on a farm near Grandview. After one year they moved to Van Wert where Mr McGrew became ill.  In a short time he died at Bethany, Missouri where he was being treated for the illness.

 

The following March, Mrs McGrew returned to the home farm near Conway where she lived with her father and brothers until 1914 when they moved to Lenox. Since that time Lenox has been her home.

 

Una professed her faith in Christ when a girl about 13 years old and joined the Greenwood Methodist Church near their home. After moving to Lenox she moved her membership to the Methodist

Church where she continued a faithful member. Though she

had no children of her own she loved children very much and

spent much of her life doing for others.

 

Preceding her in death were: her father and mother, 5 brothers, Columbus, John Will, Edwin and Albert, 2 sisters, Mrs. Louella Ray and Mrs. Florence Gorsline.  Surviving are one brother Chesley R. Seller of Lenox, a niece Miss Pluma Ray, who has lived with Mrs. McGrew since 1927, a step-son Vern McGrew of Marshalltown, Iowa, a number of nephews and nieces and her many friends and neighbors.

Nixon, Mary Elizabeth –

Nixon, Mrs. Glen C. -

The wife and the sister of a north Omaha hardware merchant were killed Tuesday afternoon about 2 o'clock in a two car collision on Highway 2, three miles east of Bedford.

 

Mrs Glen C Nixon, 54, Omaha, and Miss Mary Elizabeth Nixon, 42,

Wilmington, Pa., are the dead.  Mrs Nixon was driving and Mr Nixon was asleep in the back seat. Authorities said the car collided with one driven by Hamilton J Ferguson, 64, a farmer living 5 miles east of Bedford. Both men were injured and were taken to Clarinda hospital.

Pinney, Carrie French -

Mrs. Carrie Pinney, 77 of Sharpsburg died at 8:30 pm Thursday at the Lenox Rest Home.  Funeral services were held Saturday at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg,  Rev. Donald Gibson officiating.  Burial  was in Gravity cemetery.

 

Mrs Pinney is survived by two daughters, Mrs George Trost of

Sharpsburg and Mrs Mildred Nissen of Sioux City, 3 grandchildren

and 2 great grandchildren.

Pinney, Carrie French -

Mrs Carrie Pinney, daughter of John and Sarah French was born in Jasper County, Iowa, September 13, 1878 and passed away at the Thomas Rest Home in Lenox, Iowa, January 26, 1956 at the age of 77 years, 4 months, and 13 days. She and Edgar L Pinney were united in

marriage February 9, 1898 and lived all her married life in the Sharpsburg community.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1934 and leaves to remember her, two daughters, Mrs Helen Trost of Sharpsburg and Mrs Wllma Nissen of Sioux City, Iowa; Three grand children Lt. Jack Trost and Lt. Thomas Nissen both members of the US Air Force and Mrs Janet Reed of Lenox; Two great grandchildren, Shelly and Jaclyn Trost also two sisters, Mrs Cleo Gilmore of Waco, Nebraska, and Mrs Coryl Toler of Compton, California.  She was a charter member of

the Presbyterian church, of Sharpsburg. She was received into church membership Dec. 23, 1894, with two sisters, Zula and Minnie French, also Ed Pinney, whom she later married was received into the church at the same time with his two sisters, Mullie and Georgia Pinney.

 

She was an active member of the Women's association and WCTU. She will be missed deeply by her loved ones and many friends.

 

Services were held Saturday, January 28, at the Presbyterian

church in Sharpsburg, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Gibson

with burial in the Gravity cemetery.

Robbins, William D. -

Dr William D Robbins, 31 years of age, passed away Tuesday

afternoon, April 10, at Worrall Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

The doctor died of a heart ailment. He had been in ill health

since Jan, 27.

 

He is survived by his widow, Rosemary, and five children. The body was returned to the Bender Funeral home Wednesday night. Rosary will be at the Funeral home tonight, Thursday, at 7:30 o'clock. Funeral services will be at 9:00 a.m. Friday at St Patrick's church

with Fr. Reisz officiating.  Burial will be at Berrien Springs, Mich.

 

Dr Robbins began his practice here about 6½ years ago. He had

been associated with Dr M J Sluss.

 

It is requested that there be no flowers sent. All who would

like to do so, may leave a contribution at the Funeral home to be sent to the Heart Fund at the Rochester, Minn., hospitals.

Robbins, William D. -

William D. Bobbins, the son of Mr and Mrs Lynn Robbins, was born at Bangor, Mich June 26, 1924. He died of a heart ailment  at Worrall hospital, Rochester, Minn., Apr 10, 1956.

 

He attended Michigan state college and Still College of Osteopathy at Des Moines and was a veteran of World War II. He began his [ractice in Lenox in 1949 in the clinic with Dr M J Sluss.

 

Sept. 12, 1948 Dr. Robbins was married to Rosemary Warren who survives. He leaves five children, Shari Lynn. William Warren, Shelley Marie, James Mark and John Charles, also his parents of Buchanan, Mich., and three brothers.

 

He was a member of St Patrick's church, the Rotary club, Commercial club, American Legion, and was president of this district of the American Ostpathic Ass'n.

 

Funeral services were held in Lenox at St Patrick's church, April 13, Fr. Reisz officiating. Prayer services were by Rev. | Jansen at the McLauchlin Funeral home in Berrien Springs, Mich., Sunday, April 15, 3:30 pm. Military services were conducted by the American Legion at Rosehill cemetery, Berrian Springs, Mich., as the body was laid to rest.

Robison, Wray W. -

Word was received here Wednesday of last week that Wray

W Robison, 81, died at his home in Ashland, Oregon. He was a

former resident of the Orient and Lenox communities. The body

was brought to the Bender Funeral Home where services were held at 2 PM, Friday,  the Rev. Norman Schmidt officiating. Burial was in Lenox Cemetery.  Relatives here are a niece, Mrs Joe Maynes, and a number of  cousins. A son, Ralph, accompanied the body to Lenox.

Rood, William B. –

William B. Rood, 59, a life-long resident of Clearfield and a teacher in the Clearfield schools for the past 33 years, died at 2 pm Saturday at the Creston hospital.

 

Funeral services were Tuesday in the high school auditorium in Clearfield with Rev. Howard Ball and Rev. Ronald Graham officiating.  Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

 

Surviving are his wife, Grace, a brother Frank Rood of California and two sisters, Mrs. Francis Flowers of Des Moines and Mrs. Hazel Hastings of Omaha.

Smith, Ethelmerle Pennebaker -

Ethelmerle Smith of Coffey, Mo., died last Tuesday evening

in a hospital at St. Joseph, Mo. She was the daughter of Mr and

Mrs A L Pennebaker of Clearfield. Her baby daughter was

delivered prematurely a few hours before her death, was placed in an incubator and is still living.

 

Funeral services and burial were at Coffey Friday. Relatives attending from here included Dr and Mrs E R Pennebaker, Mrs Gene Becherer, Chas. Deaver, and Edna Ranck, also Mrs J C Pennebaker and Mr and Mrs Stanley Ranck of Corning.

 

Ethelmerle, daughter of A L and Flossie Pennebaker was born Jan. 30, 1920 near Sharpsburg, Iowa and passed away Feb. 7, 1956 at the General Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. at the age of 36 years and 9 days.

 

In January 1923 she and her sister Anabel moved with their parents to Davenport, Iowa where her mother passed away April 8, 1923.  Returning to Sharpsburg the two little girls made their home with their grandparents Mr and Mrs D S Pennebaker.  In 1928 they went to Winterset to live with their parents, their father having reestablished their home.  The family returned to Sharpsburg in March of 1936, living with his parents on the old homestead.

 

Ethelmerle graduated from Sharpsburg high school in 1937

She graduated from the Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines and was employed in Shenandoah where she met and

married Olin W Smith of Coffey, Mo. She worked in Omaha

during his army service. After living for a time in California and later in Shenandoah, they moved to Coffey, Mo., where Mrs Smith was employed in the MFA, then to Pattonsburg Mo where she remained until shortly before her death.

 

Mrs Smith was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Sharpsburg, later transferring her membership to the Baptist Church of Coffey, Mo. She was always a faithful laborer in her Church. Her last testimony was "Christ is the Answer."

 

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Olin, a baby passing

her husband, Olin, a baby daughter, Eula Ruth, her parents Mr and Mrs A L Pennebaker, her sister Anabel Curphey and husband, two nephews and two nieces, her grandfather, D S Pennebaker, his parents Mr and Mrs Claude Smith, and a host of relatives and friends.

 

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church in Coffey, Mo., Feb. 10, 1956 with interment in the Coffey Cemetery.

Sundell, Wilhelmina Carlson -

Mrs Wilhelmina Sundell, 81, died at the Lenox Rest home Jan

30, 1956 Services are being held today Thursday at tine Presby-

terian church in Sharpsburg with burial in Conway cemetery.

 

Survivors include two sons, Karl of Sharpsburg and Albert of Kansas City, Mo., and a daughter, Mrs. Agnes Bashor of Washington, D. C., also 6 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Sundell, Wilhelmina Carlson -

Wilhelmina Carlson was born in Sinoland, Sweden, November

13, 1874 and passed away at Lenox, Iowa January 31, 1956, at the age of 81 years, after being in failing health for some time.

 

At the age of 19 years she left Sweden and came to America to live with her brother in Escamaba, Michigan.

 

June 22, 1898, she was married to John Sundell and in 1901 they came to Taylor County, Iowa where the remainder of her life was spent. Mr and Mrs Sundell were the parents of three children: a daughter Mrs Agnes Bashor of Washington, DC; and two sons Karl of

Sharpsburg and John Albert of Kansas City.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away

in 1952 and she was the last surviving member of her family. She was a life member of the Swedish Lutheran Church.

 

Besides her children she is survived by six grandchildren Allan Bashor of Chicago, Beverly Stream of Lenox, Vada and Edward Sundell of Sharpsburg and Carol and John Sundell of Kansas City, also one great grandchild Neal Allan Bashor of Chicago and other relatives and friends.

 

Funeral services were at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church

Feb. 2. conducted by Rev. Donald Gibson. Burial was in the Conway Cemetery.

Taylor, C. F. –

C F Taylor of St Louis died there Tuesday night about 10 o'clock, according to word received by his brother-in-law, Ira Campbell. The body will be brougiht to Bender Funeral home in Lenox where a short service will be held at 3 pm Friday afternoon. Burial will be in

Lenox cemetery.

His widow is the former Ethel Campbell of Lenox.

Taylor, Darlene Louise -

Darlene Louise Taylor, 24, died Wednesday at 11p.m., at the Ringgold county hospital in Mt. Ayr after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. She had diabetes since she was 4 years old and had been totally blind the past 4 years. She was graduated from the Diagonal high school in 1950. She was a member of the: Methodist church in Diagonal and a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

 

Survivors: her mother and father, Mr and Mrs Harold Taylor, of Diagonal; 1 brother, John, of Diagonal; 3 sisters, Mrs Helen Turner, of Sioux City, Caryl, and Barbara, at home; 4 grandparents, Mr and

Mrs John Denhart, of Mt., Ayr; Mr and Mrs James Taylor of

Diagonal; 1 nephew, Curtis Turner, of Sioux City and one niece, Bobbi Jean Taylor, of Diagonal. Mrs C. E. Dixon is an aunt.

 

Funeral services were held Saturday, at 2:30, p.m., at the Methodist church in Diagonal with the Rev. W A Whitnack officiating. Burial in the Diagonal Cemetery.

Thompson, John -

John Thompson, 80, a resident of the Clearfield area all his life, took his own life by hanging Monday afternoon. He was found in his home, seven miles north of Clearfield, by relatives about 4 p. m. Monday.

 

Funeral services were Wednesday at the Prairie Star Presbyterian

church. Burial was in the Morgan cemetery, south of Kent,

 

Mr Thompson, a bachelor, lived alone on his farm. He is survived

by a brother-in-law, Cecil Maharry of Clearfield and several

nieces and nephews. He had been in ill health for some time relatives said.

Mrs Earl A Tyler of Des Moines died at her home early Sunday morning. She was an aunt of O D Tyler of Lenox. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. Mr and Mrs O D Tyler left Sunday to make arrangements be present at the services.

Mrs Zetta Wilt received word of the death of her sister-in-law,

Mrs Daisy Wilt on Jan. 13 at Methodist hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. She had suffered a series of heart attacks.

 

Mrs Wilt was the widow of the late Rev. Dora Wilt and was

formerly Miss Daisy Sparks. She lived in and near Lenox as a girl and graduated from the Lenox school in the class of 1898,

Wood, Maude -

Mrs Maude Wood, 78, passed away at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday,

April 18. She suffered a stroke Tuesday of last week and had

been at the home of her son Lloyd north of town.  Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 pm at Bender Funeral Home, the Rev James Eddy officiating. Burial will be in Lenox cemetery.

 

Her husband preceded her in death. Survivors include one

son, Lloyd, 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Wynn, Mrs. Irve -

The funeral of Mrs Irve Wynn of north of Prescott was held

at the Roland funeral home at Corning Saturday with burial

at Mt Zion near Prescott. Mrs Wynn was a sister-in-law of Mrs

Wes Crouch, grandmother of Mrs Dennis Thompson and aunt

of Mrs Paul Waters. These relatives and several others from here attended the funeral.
