Beach, Clifford Spencer –

Clifford Spencer Beach, son of George and Luella E. Beach, was born October 28, 1888 at Lenox, Iowa and passed away at the family home at the age of 56 years, 5 months and 11 days.

 

His entire life was spent on a farm in this community with the exception of the time he was in school at Shenandoah and Iowa State College of Ames.

 

On February 26, 1909, he was married to Eula Page and to them were born 10 children, one of whom (Haldean) passed away Aug. 31, 1943.

 

Cliff was an active member of his community.  At the time of his sudden death he was engaged in Triple A work, had held township offices for several years, helped on war bond and Red Cross drives, and was always a willing and helpful neighbor.  He will be greatly missed by the members of his immediate family.  The loving care and guidance he gave them has been an invaluable gift to each of them.  His disposition and personality made him a man respected and admired by all who knew him.

 

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife Eula and nine children:  Captain Robert P. Beach, with the Marines in the South Pacific; Luella Gender of Van Nuys, Calif.; Walter George Beach of Omaha, Neb.; Captain Donald Clifford Beach, with the Third Army in Germany; M’Sgt. Dale H. Beach, with the 9th Air Force in France; Josephine Walter of Lenox, and Bill, Marjorie and Elizabeth at home.

Also three sisters, Nellie Hetz of San Diego, Calif.; Effie Jacoby of Lee’s Summitt, Mo.; and Luella Cottrell of Lenox.  He also leaves six grandchildren, 20 nieces and nine nephews and a host of friends who are numbered by his acquaintances.

 

Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian church in Lenox April 13, 1945, conducted by Rev. Earl Moneymaker.  Interment was made in Lenox cemetery.

Beck, John George –

John George Beck, the son of Phillip and Katherine Beck, was born in Grove township, Taylor County, Iowa Dec. 3, 1885 and passed away at his home east of Lenox on Tuesday, May 15, 1945 at the age of 59 years, 5 months and 12 days.  He had lived all his life on a farm and had been accounted a successful farmer.  He was director at Platte Township No. 2 for five years and had lived all his life in Taylor County.  Early in life he united with the Presbyterian church of Lenox.

As a young man he was united in marriage to Ida Estella Wiand Feb. 24, 1904.  To this union three children were born: Mrs. Mildred Haag, Mrs. Velda Putnam and Harold Beck.  Mrs. Beck preceded her husband in death.

On October 22, 1919 he was united in marriage to Lydia Ann Hucks.  To this union a son, Leonard George was born.  Both preceded him in death.  On August 22, 1922 he was married to Lydia Ida Slater, and to this union was born one daughter, Wilma Barbara  was born.  His wife preceded him in death.  On October 11, 1943 he was united in marriage to Ida Mae Crowe. 

 

Besides his wife and daughter, Wilma Barbara of the home and his two daughters, Mrs. Haag and Mrs. Putnam and son Harold, he is survived by his father and step mother, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Beck of Lenox and one brother, Charles Beck of Sharpsburg, Iowa; three half brothers: Albert of Sharpsburg; Johnnie and Herman of Reinbeck, Iowa, three half sisters, Mrs. Mary Morris of Lenox, Miss Emma Beck of St. Joseph, Mo. and Miss Rose Beck of the home.  Also surviving are five grandchildren, Richard and Karen Haag, Bernadine and Marcia Putnam and Elaine Beck; also several nieces and a host of friends.

 

Funeral services were held from the United Presbyterian church in Lenox on Thursday afternoon, May 17, 1945 at 2:30 the Rev. Earl Moneymaker, officiating.  Interment in Fairview cemetery.

Beck, George –

Lenox community was saddened Tuesday morning by the news that George Beck,  prominent farmer living east of town had committed suicide by shooting himself.  He had been in ill health for some time.

Cain, Joseph –

Joseph Cain, son of Michael and Anne Feeney was born near Bernard, Iowa, Dec. 4, 1880 and died at his home in Lenox Jan. 22, 1945.

He moved at an early age to Corning, Iowa were he engaged in farming with his brother, Silas, and later moved to a farm southeast of Lenox.

He was united in marriage to Rose Kate Krohmer, Feb. 12, 1918.  They made their home near Kent and later moved to Lenox where he resided at the time of his death.

 

He is survived by his wife, Rose, Pfc. Joseph J. Cain, US. Marine Corps, stationed at San Diego, Calif.; Paul and Raymond who reside in Lenox and a daughter, Mrs. R. L. Starry of Cromwell; also one sister, Linnie Cain of Lenox.  One daughter preceded him in death.  He leaves two grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s church at 10 p.m. Jan. 25.

Burial was at Lenox cemetery.

Chenoweth, Albert Ben –

Funeral services were conducted last Friday at the Barber Funeral home for Albert Ben Chenoweth and burial was made in the Shannon City cemetery.

 

Mr. Chenoweth, aged 77, died as a result of burns received in a fire at his home in Des Moines on the 9th of March.  An oil stove on which he was cooking at 11 o’clock at night, caught fire and he threw water on it with a resulting explosion that burned him so badly that he was unable to recover.  He was taken to the hospital at once where he remained until his death.

 

Albert Ben Chenoweth was born on a farm west of Lenox February 14, 1862.  He was married on Dec. 25, 1899 to Mary Matzen.  To this union two children were born, Knelon and Joe.

 

Both his sons and wife preceded him in death, his wife passing away in February 1939. 


The family lived for some time in Montana after leaving here many years ago, and later came back to Iowa and lived on a farm five miles northeast of Lenox, leaving there about ten years ago and going to Des Moines to live.

 

He is survived by a sister, Fannie of Montana, a grandson, Kenneth Chenoweth of Des Moines, a cousin Clyde Hall of Corning and several nieces and nephews.

Cochran, Marie Travis –

Marie Travis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Travis, was born at Carrsville, Ky.  August 8, 1908 and passed away at the Oakdale Sanitarium at Iowa City, Iowa May 3, 1945, at the age of 36 years, 8 months and 25 days.

 

About 1936 she came to Glenwood, Iowa as a nurse.  While working there she became acquainted with John Cochran to whom she was united in marriage on Feb. 6, 1935.  They have made their home in Glenwood since their marriage.

 

To this union were born two children, Travis Eugene and Sharon Kay.

 

Mrs. Cochran when about 18 years of age, united with the Methodist church in Kentucky, later transferring her membership to the Congregational church at Glenwood.  She was a teacher of a class in Sunday school and took active part in the church work.  She was also active in Red Cross work and other activities incident of the war.

 

Besides her husband and two children she leaves to mourn her passing one brother, Harold Travis Of Rosiclaire, Illinois and two sisters, Mrs. Louis Denton and Miss Imogene Travis of Henderson, Ky., besides other relatives and friends.

 

Funeral services were held at the Arnold funeral home, Lenox, Iowa, Saturday May 5, 1945 at 2:00 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Earl Moneymaker.  Interment was made at Fairview cemetery.

Dunn, William M. –

The following clipping was sent to us by Don Day Ermand of Dalton, Nebraska and should be of interest to our readers.  He was a son of J. B. Dunn, who was Taylor County attorney in the early 1900’s.  The clipping reads:

North Platte, Neb. – William M. Dunn, 78, editor and publisher of the Sutherland, Neb. Courier until his retirement several months ago, died Wednesday on a train enroute from Portland, Oregon to his home in Sutherland.  In the newspaper business since 1880, Dunn moved to Sutherland in 1918, after being associated with various Iowa and Missouri newspapers.  He was the former editor of the Custer Co. Republican, Broken Bow, Neb.

Gustafson, Carrie –

Carrie Gustafson, sister of John Haering of Lenox, passed away May 2nd at Omaha, Neb.  She was 85 years old and had lived in Omaha since her marriage 57 years ago.  Her husband passed away in 1925 and she is survived by one son, Arthur A. who resides in Omaha. 


Funeral services were held on Friday, May 4 in Omaha at the Fitch mortuary.  She was a member of the Lutheran church and quite active in the Order of the Eastern Star, they having charge of the services.  Interment was made at Forest Lawn cemetery.

 

Mr. Haering and his daughter, Mrs. Harry Preston, attended the services.

Hayes, John J. –

John J. Hayes was born near Antioe, Ohio, Sept. 19, 1863 and passed away at his home in Creston, Iowa April 22, 1945 at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 28 days.

 

He was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Hayes and his early boyhood was spent in Ohio and Virginia.  He then came to Bedford where he was united in marriage to Anna Turner Sept. 9, 1887.  They made their home on a farm there until they retired in 1925 and moved to Creston.

 

He is survived by his wife, four daughters and three sons:  Mrs. Joe Townsend and Mrs. Clark Blakely of Creston; Mrs. Roy Olmstead, Howsoen, Idaho; Mrs. Harlan Grimm, Sharpsburg, Iowa; Glen Hayes, Conway, Ia.; Cecil Hayes, Conception Jct., Missouri; O.P. Hayes, Chief Machinist and Warrant Officer, U.S. Navy.

 

Also surviving are twenty-one grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two sisters.

 

In early childhood he united with the Church of Christ.

 

Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Creston and burial was made in Bedford cemetery.

Haynes, Bertha V. –

Born June 9, 1878, daughter of Samuel C. and Elizabeth A. Haynes, near Wolfville, Maryland and passed away at her home in Lenox, Wednesday Jan. 31, at the age of 66 years.

 

She came to Lenox in 1891 and made her home here until the time of her death.  She was united in marriage to Clarence V. Haynes, July 26, 1896.  To this union seven children were born: Cleo of Griswold, Iowa, Harry of Wilmington, Calif., Thelma of Des Moines, Iowa, Randall of Lenox; Bernice of Des Moines, Donald of Los Angeles, Calif. and Jack, who is in the U.S. Marine Corp.  Her husband and all of her children and sixteen grandchildren survive, also one sister, Etta of Creston and three brothers, Frank of Port Blakely, Wash., Roy and John of Gillette, Wyoming.

 

She was the only mother in Lenox to have sons in both World War 1 and 2.

 

She united with the Christian church early in life.

 

Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, conducted by Rev. E. F. Hagee.  Burial was in Lenox cemetery

Henderson, M. F. –

M. F. Henderson died at Indianola last Sunday.  He was born on a farm near Clearfield 55 years ago and left there about 25 years ago, going to College Springs where he remained until about 1921 when he moved to Indianola where he became associated with a bank, the People’s Trust and Savings Company, of which concern he was cashier and a director at the time of his death.  He was also serving as city treasurer.

 

Surviving are his wife and one daughter, Elizabeth.  Three brothers, one of them being Tom Henderson of Lenox.

 

Funeral services were held and burial made in Indianola on Wednesday.

Hoover, Mrs. Lester –

Mrs. Lester Hoover of Blockton, passed away Sunday, April 9th at the Methodist hospital at St. Joseph, Mo.  She had been ill for a long time and spent the past three months at the hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11 at the Methodist church at Blockton.  Mrs. Hoover was a sister of Mrs. Joe Wood of Lenox.

Kirketeg, O. J. –

State Senator O.J. Kirketeg, 53, of Bedford, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday of last week at Mercy hospital in Des Moines, following two heart attacks.  He was taken to the hospital early Thursday morning after suffering an attack in his room at Hotel Kirkwood.  His condition was reported improved during the day but he suffered another attack shortly before his death.

 

Senator Kirketeg recently was appointed by Gov. Robert D. Blue to take office July 1, as member of the State tax commission. 

 

He was the second senator to die since the opening of the present legislative session.  S. C. Whitehill of Marshalltown collapsed and died on the opening day of the session.

 

Senator Kirketeg was serving his third term in the senate, having been a member of the legislature in 1936 and 1940 sessions.  He represented Adams and Taylor counties.

 

Born on a farm in Humboldt county, Senator Kirketeg was graduated from Iowa State Teachers college, Cedar Falls in 1912.  Entering the field of rural teaching, he became school principal at Little Cedar and in 1913 became superintendent of Schools at Columbus City.

 

Turning to law, Senator Kirketeg was graduated from the law school at the State University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1917.

 

Here his career was interrupted by two years’ service in the army in World War I.  Twice afterward he was commissioned in the infantry reserve.  After the war, he practiced law in Bedford.  He became Taylor county attorney in 1929. 

 

Senator Kirketeg was past grand patron of the Order of Eastern Star in Iowa, and past grand priest of the Royal Arch Masons in Iowa.  He held memberships in the American Legion and the Presbyterian church.

 

His wife, the former Kathlyn M. MacCulloch, survives.

 

Funeral services were held at Bedford Monday at the Presbyterian church at 2:00.

 

Six state senators who sit near the flower-decked empty seat which  Senator Kirketeg occupied were honorary pallbearers.  They were named Friday by Lt. Gov. Kenneth A. Evans under a memorial resolution which the senate adopted before it adjourned for the day out of respect to Senator Kirketeg.

The honorary pallbearers are Senators O. H. Heningsen (Rep.Clinton), O.N. Hultman (Rep. Stanton), Herman Knudson (Rep. Mason City), F. F. Sharp (Rep. Elkader), P. J. Pine (Rep. Columbus Junction), and E. H. Vrba (Dem. Cresco).

Laughlin, Roger Edwin –

Roger Edwin Laughlin, son of George and Sinah Laughlin, last survivor of his family, was born in Clayton County, Illinois May 8, 1861, and passed away at the Armstrong Nursing home at Bedford, Iowa Feb. 20, 1945, after a long illness, at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 12 days.

 

He ,with his mother and two sisters came to Nodaway County, Mo. in 1889.  He was married to Cora Ingels on Sept. 13, 1891.  To this union ten children were born; one daughter preceding him in death.  He lived in Taylor County, Iowa 34 years.

 

He united with the Methodist church at the age of 20 years.

 

He is survived by his wife and nine children: Elmer, Creston, Iowa; Lewis, Dexter, Oregon; Blanch Watkins, Tarkio, Mo.; Ruth Smith, Mountain Grove, Mo.; Jennie Evans, Gravity, Iowa; John, Riverton, Wyoming; Lawrence, in the armed forced in the South Pacific; Nina Dink, Lenox, Iowa; and Robb, in the armed forces now home from the Pacific.  Twenty-four grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

 

Funeral services were held Friday at two p.m. at the Barber Funeral Home, the Rev. J. H. Machlan in charge.  Burial was in the cemetery at Bedford.

Moser, Charles E.–

Charles E. Moser, son of Joseph and Anna Coyer Moser, was born, Jan. 12, 1874 at Masontown, Penn. and was married to Cora Ethel Johnson June 1, 1898 at Masontown.

 

Mr. Moser was baptized on July 30, 1903 into the Church of the Brethen, known as Fairview church at Masontown.  He was elected to Deacon’s Office on Nov. 28, 1905, besides filling other offices in the church.

 

He passed away very suddenly on March 12, 1945 at the Bryant apartment in Lenox, Iowa.  He was 71 years and 2 months of age.  Mrs. Moser passed away Dec. 6, 1937.

 

He is survived by his two children, Curtis A. Moser of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Florence Wray of Prescott, Iowa and three grandchildren, Robert Moser, now serving in the armed forces in Italy and Roland and Marilyn Wray of Prescott, Iowa, many near relatives and friends.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Moser came to Iowa twelve years ago to make this locality their future home.  Mr. Moser had been in failing health for several years but was able to be around most of the time.  He was a kind father, always willing to sacrifice time and self and lived to his motto, “Help others.”

 

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Barber Funeral  Home in Lenox,  conducted by Rev. Chas. Colyn.  Burial was in Salem cemetery beside his wife, near the Salem church.

Paymal, Charles Francis “Frank”–

Charles Francis Paymal, son of Eugene and Mary Paymal, was born Aug. 31, 1868 in Peoria county, Illinois and passed away at the Clarinda hospital May 23, 1945 at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 22 days.

 

He moved with his parents to Corning, Iowa in 1869.  Most of his life was spent on a farm southwest of Lenox.

 

On Sept. 17, 1907 he was united in marriage to Pauline Haering.  To this union was born one son, Eugene Francis of Lenox.  He also leaves to mourn his passing his wife, three sisters, Mrs. Lou Sealy and Mrs. Corn Van Wormer of Huntington Park, Calif., Mrs. Ida Readhead of Detroit, Michigan; a brother, Lafe Paymal of Omaha and a host of relatives and friends.  One brother, Joseph, preceded him in death.

 

Funeral services were held at the Barber Funeral home Friday May 25, at 2:30, conducted by the Rev. Earl Moneymaker.  Burial in Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Paymal, George Francis –

George Francis Paymal was born at Peoria, Ill., the son of Mrs. and Mrs. Harvey Grazier, on March 9, 1863 and passed away Friday, May 4, 1945 at the Armstrong Nursing Home at Bedford, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 25 days.

He was reared on a farm near Lenox by the E. A. Paymal family.  He was a resident of this community most of his life.

 

He was united in marriage on December 18, 1889 to Maggie Nelson.  To this union was born four children: Charles, the eldest, died at the age of 3 months.  The others are Mrs. Hubert Presnall of Atlantic, Iowa, Mrs. John Reynolds of Hopkins, Mo., and Guy Paymal of Los Angeles, Calif.

 

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, 3 children, 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Bailey of Kewaunee, Ill.

 

His wife, who is now in a nursing home was unable to attend the funeral.

Pegg. John Henry

John Henry Pegg was born August 20, 1866 in Neponset, Ill. and passed away at his home in Lenox Saturday, March 17, at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 14 days.

 

He came to Iowa at the age of six with his father, who settled on a farm west of Lenox and resided there until he moved to Lenox about 30 years ago.  On Sept. 2, 1926 he was united in marriage to Bernice Carlson of Creston, and to this union three children were born.  His parents, several brothers and sisters preceded him in death, also a daughter, Joan who lived but a few hours at birth.

 

He was a regular attendant of the Blue Grove Christian church and also the Christian church at Lenox.  He was a man of kindly and generous disposition, always helping anyone in time of need when it was possible to do so.

 

He leaves to mourn his departure his widow, Bernice, and two sons, Billy and Tommy; one step-son, Franklin E. Carlson of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, William of Lenox and several nephews and nieces and a multitude of friends who will miss him.

 

Funeral services were held Tuesday in charge of Rev. J. H. Machlan and interment was in Lenox cemetery.

Roe, Jesse Oscar –

Jesse Oscar Roe, son of Mary and Mortimer Roe was born April 16, 1882 at Waterloo, Iowa and passed away at his home in Lenox, Iowa on Tuesday, March 13, 1945 at the age of 63 years 10 months and 25 days.

 

His young manhood was spent in Waterloo , where he attended school, going later to Canby, Minnesota where he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Ben Melby until 1914.  Early that year he went to Flaxton, North Dakota where he was united in marriage to Mary Cipra of Canby, Minn.

 

A year later they came to Lenox, in which vicinity they resided until his death.  To this union were born seven children who, with his widow, survive him.  They are Grace Alexander of Kansas City, Kansas; Johnny, Motor Machinist Mate, Second Class, United States Navy, Camp Bedford, Va.; Dean, Seaman First Class Aviation Radioman of Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida, and Marjory, Gene, Bonnie and Doris at home; Mrs. Dean Roe of Lenox, one son-in-law, K.E.  Alexander, serving with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific; one sister, Cora Roe and one brother, Fred Roe, both of Waterloo, Iowa and a host of friends.  His parents, a sister and two brothers preceded him in death.

 

Mr. Roe had been in failing illness for the past year but his condition was not thought to be serious until the last few weeks, and he retained his good humor and jolly disposition until the last.

 

Funeral services were conducted be the Rev. E. F. Hagee Friday afternoon in the Barber Funeral Home.  Music was furnished by Marcia Bender with Annola Toler at the piano.  Interment was in the local cemetery.

Romine, Mary Catherine Hurley –

Mary Catherine Hurley, daughter of Marietta and Jeremiah Hurley, was born near Farmer City, Illinois on November 14, 1861 and passed away at Lenox, Iowa on March 14, 1945, being 83 years and four months of age.

 

In March 1882 she came to Iowa with her parents and settled on a farm  which is now a part of the Les Johnson farm near Lenox.

 

On June 6, 1883, she was united in marriage to Chas. N. Romine also of Illinois.  To this union was born one daughter, Mabel, now Mrs. G. L. Long of Benicia, Calif.

 

In young womanhood, Mrs. Romine united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church, but upon coming to Iowa she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of which she was a faithful attendant so long as her health permitted.

 

Mrs. Romine was preceded in death by her father, mother, three sisters and four brothers.  She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Long, two grandchildren, Mrs. Mary Healy of South Gate, Calif., who was unable to be present and by Roy Welch of Lenox, and three great grandchildren, Mary Louise, Carolyn Ann and Vanda Jean Welch of Lenox, besides numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and one sister-in-law, besides a host of friends to mourn her death.

 

She was a faithful and loyal member of the Royal Neighbors and a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star, whose members had charge of the services at the cemetery.

 

Services were held Sunday at 2:30 P.M. at the Barber Funeral Home with Rev. J. H. Machlan in charge.  Interment was in the Lenox cemetery.

Terry, Phoebe Ellen Craley

Phoebe Ellen Craley, daughter of Samuel and Catherine Craley was born March 14, 1875 at Chillicothe, Mo. and passed away suddenly at her home in Lenox, Iowa at the age of 70 years and 5 days.

 

Her early childhood was spent at Chillicothe, later going to Breckenridge, Mo. where she was married to John W. Terry Feb. 17,1891.  To this union were born nine children, three of whom preceded her in death.

 

She became a member of the Methodist church in her early life, and was a faithful member and church attendant until poor health prevented her from being active.

 

She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, six children, Pearl  Chandler and Jim Terry of Hamilton, Montana, Sam and Lloyd Terry of Beaumont, Calif.; Sylvia Deaver and Bill Terry of Lenox, also three sisters and one brother, 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  She was a loving and devoted wife and mother and was loved by all who knew her.

 

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Barber Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. J.H. Machlan.  Interment was in Lenox cemetery.

Wall, Steven Laverne –

Steven Laverne Wall, infant son of Pfc. And Mrs. Laverne Wall, was born in the Municipal hospital at Clarinda, Iowa Feb. 13, 1945 and passed away April 26.

The father is somewhere in Germany, serving his country.  Besides his parents he leaves his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stewart, Blockton, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wall of Gravity and great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wall of Lenox and many other relatives.

Funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral home in Bedford, Iowa with interment in Lenox cemetery.

The Lord has given and the Lord has called away the baby in our home; we cannot, Lord, Thy purpose see, but all is well is done by Thee.

Wells, Mary Maude Hazle

Mary Maude Hazle was born on a farm in Sumner county, Kansas, December 7, 1881 and passed away at the Mercy hospital in Parsons, Kansas, Sunday May 13th, 1945 at the age of 63 years, 5 months and 6 days.  When quite small she was taken to Altamount, Kansas and at the age of 12 came to Iowa to make her home with an uncle, H. I. Emmett.

 

In 1906 she was united in marriage to Elza Wells.  Mr. Wells passed away in 1934.  Early in life she united with the Methodist church and held her membership in that church until her death.

 

She is survived by two half sisters, Mrs. Elsie Goff, Gideon, Oklahoma and Pearl Fitzwater, Protection, Kansas and two half brother, A. A. Riepe of Sun City, Kansas, also by a niece, Imogene Barber, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  There are also surviving 12 nieces and nephews and a large number of friends.

 

Funeral services were held at the Arnold Funeral Home in Lenox, Iowa Wednesday, May 16th, 1945 at 2:00 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Earl Moneymaker.  Burial was in the Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Whipp, Lloyd Jr. –

On April 10th Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Whipp received a letter stating that their son, Lloyd Whipp Jr. of the U.S. Marine Corps had received a gunshot wound in the chest in action against the enemy at Iwo Jim on March 12.

Then on April 12 came a telegram, saying that he had died from wounds and a letter would follow.

He enlisted in August 1942 and went across in September of 1943 as a Forward Radio Observer of the 2nd 155th M. M. Howitzer Battalion.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Whipp of Lenox, a brother, Forrest of Lenox and two sisters, Mrs. D. F. Sherwin of San Mateo, Calif., and Mrs. Donald Duncan of Clarinda, Iowa.

Wurster, Ida –

Ida Wurster of Creston, Iowa died at her home their Sunday, May 6 [1945], after a long illness.  She was born Sept. 17, 1888 in Lenox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Wurster.  The family moved to Creston when she was a child.  She was a member of the Presbyterian church.

 

Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Eva Wurster, 204 S. Maple St., Creston; seven sisters, Mrs. W.L. Means, Lorimor; Mrs. B. O. Foster, Des Moines; Mrs. Orie G. Woosley, Davenport; Elvin Wurster, Omaha, Mrs. F. W. Swanson, Mrs. Geo. F. Allen and Mrs. Nina Alloway, all of Creston.

 

Funeral services were held at Creston Monday and interment was made in Lenox.

Wurster, Lena Beck –

Lena Beck, daughter of John and Katherine Beck, was born August 23, 1884 in Dettingen, Germany and passed away at her home near Lenox, March 14, 1945, aged 59 years, 6 months and 20 days.

 

She came to America with her parents in 1888 at the age of three years and has spent all of her life in and around Lenox.  She was united in marriage to Fred Wurster Oct. 24, 1913.  With the exception of the first year, they have spent their life together on a farm east of Lenox.

 

When a girl she united with the First Presbyterian Church of Lenox.

 

She has been in poor health for a number of years, but suffered with patience and little complaint.

 

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, four brothers, Adolph, William and Henry of Lenox and Charles of Clearfield, two sisters, Flora Rogers of Leon, and Rosa Baker of Clearfield; nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

 

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, March 17 at the Arnold Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Earl Moneymaker.  Interment was in Fairview cemetery.
