Barrans, Joseph Denison -

Joseph Denison, son of Thomas and Sarah Barrans, was born

in Bureau County, Ill., Feb. 9, 1873 and departed this life at

his home in West Clearfield April 25, 1954 at the age of 81

years.

He moved with his family to Lenox in 1874 and grew to manhood

there. At an early age he became a member of the Presbyterian

church in Lenox. After teaching for a time he became a farmer, later he entered the livery and horse buying business in Clearfield. At all times he was interested in the affairs of his nation and was well informed about its government.

On March 22, 1905 he was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Crew, daughter of James and Viola Crew. To this union were born 5 children, two dying in infancy. Surviving him are his wife, two daughters, Helen Hicks of Bolckow, Mo., and Barbara Robison of Gaylord, Ore.; one son Joseph C of Portland, Ore., and 3 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Christian church.

Rev Wm Howes officiated Burial in Clearfield.

Funeral services for Ralph Burright who passed away at the hospital in Omaha during the past week was held at the funeral home in Clarinda Sunday afternoon. Burial in Clarinda cemetery.

Bye, Lorena Myrtle Woodside -

Lorena Myrtle, daughter of John and Elizabeth Woodside; was born Dec. 5. 1931 at Clearfield, Taylor County  Iowa and died at the Community Hospital in Cameron. Mo. Mar. 31, 1954 at the age of 72 years 3 months and 26 days.

On Jan. I, 1905 she was united in marriage to Wm. E. Bye of

Clearfield. To this union were born two sons, Ernest Wm.. deceased,

Ralph H. Kansas City, Kan.; two daughters, Mrs Golda Louk. Missions. Kan., and Mrs. Bernice Weismiller of Brighton. Colo.

In 1913 the family moved to Kansas where they resided until

about 9 years ago, moving then to Missouri. The past six years have been spent in Cameron.

Mrs.  Bye was preceded in death by her parents and the son, Capt Ernest W. Bye who lost his life Jan. 9. 1944 in the Pacific while in action in World War II.

Besides her husband, one son and two daughters are 4 grandsons, Gail, Franklin and Peter Louk: Wm. Frank Bye, 1 grand daughter. Jean Weismiller; one brother. Leo Woodside, Clearfield and one sister, Mrs. Irma Grace of Newton, la., other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Poland Funeral Home at 10:30

a. m. April 2 in Cameron, conducted by Rev. Geo. Poe. Cash, William Henry -

Dr. W. H. Cash, 83, a practicing physician in this vicinity for 48 years, passed away at a Rochester, Minn., hospital Friday, April 23 at 11 p.m. The doctor was admitted to a Des Moines hospital in March and was later taken to Rochester.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 26 from the Methodist church with the Rev. H D Butts officiating. Burial vas in Lenox cemetery.

Dr Cash was president of the Taylor County Medical Association,

member of the Iowa State Medical Association, a charter member of the Lenox Rotary Club, a fifty year member of the Masonic lodge and a Past Patron of the Eastern Star. He had taught an adult Bible school class at the Methodist Church for almost 30 years.

The son of William Cash and Lydia Starkey Cash, William Henry Cash was born at Leon, Iowa Sept. 3, 1870, the sixth child in a family of nine.

Before taking his medical training he was Superintendent of Schools at Conway for eight years. He graduated with honors from Illinois Medical school and practiced for a time at Guss before coming to Lenox in 1910.

He was associated here at first with Dr Scroggs. Dr Cash was able to recall many long trips with horse and buggy and even on horseback. He bought his first automobile in 1914. His wide acquaintance and many loyal friends attest to the devotion and sincerity with which

he practiced his profession.

The doctor is survived by his wife, Amy; three sons Donald, vice president of the Wyeth Medical firm of Philadelphia; Paul, a doctor in Des Moines; and Keith, a lawyer at Albia; 2 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs Anna Meek, Mrs Eva Russell, both of

Leon; two brothers, John of Leon and Judge Joseph Cash of

Bonesteel, S. Dak.

 His first fife, Helen, a son Harold, and an infant daughter, Mildred,

preceded him in death.

Cox, Noah Ames Semon -

Semon Cox, 90 years old, died Saturday, May 1, in a Corning hospital. Mr. Cox was a native of Missouri, and had lived in Nebraska in his youth. Funeral services were at the Lenox Methodist church Tuesday, May 4, at 1 p. m., conducted by the minister, Rev H D Butts. Burial was at Emerson, la.

OBITUARY—COX

Noah Ames Semon Cox, son of Noah and Mary Louisa Packer was born in Worth County, Grant City, Mo., Dec. 19, 1863, and passed away after a brief illness at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, la. on May 1, 1954, at the age of 90 years, 4 months and 12 days.

On Nov. 28, 1891, he was united in marriage to Alma Kindree at Broken Bow, Neb., and to this union, three children were born.

One son, Alva Leland and a daughter, Louisa Jane, died in infancy. A daughter, Ada Glee Poindexter, of Lenox survives. Mr. Cox farmed near Broken Bow and later the family moved to Iowa where they continued farming until 1904, when he purchased a grocery store and remained in this business until moving to Lenox in 1939.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and his greatest

enjoyment was in grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a good friend and neighbor and will be greatly missed in the community.

He is survived by his widow and daughter of Lenox; two

grandchildren, Mrs. Dewey Strain of Modale, la., and R.E. Poindexter of Truro, la.; four great grandchildren, Lynda Glee and Kent Strain, and Reddy Joe and Jimmy Poindexter; also a sister, Mrs. Emma Smith of Boise, Idaho and two brothers, George of Portland, Oregon and Ralph of St. Louis, Mo.

Gold, Charles C. –

Charles C. Gold, son of John and Emmaline Gold, was born

near Chesterfield, Indiana, Aug. 14, 1878, and departed from this

life May 7, 1954 at the age of 75 years, 8 months, 23 days. He

was one of eight children.  He came to Iowa with his parents at the age of 20 and lived in Taylor County the remainder of his life, except for five years in, Ringgold county.

He was united in marriage to Inez Davis June 26, 1901 at Bedford. To this union one child was born, a daughter, Gladys Davis, who has lived with or near her father through the years. He was also a father to Ralph DeVoe who came to make his home with him at the age

of thirteen.

In addition to his wife and daughter he is survived by his son-in-law, Melvin Davis; four brothers, Johnny of Hollandale, Minn.; Anson of Conway; Vernon of Seymour and Orville of Council Bluffs; seven grandchildren, La Von Vest of Kansas City, Mo.; Morton McMahill of Gladbrook, Ia., Patricia Shafer of Gravity; Charles Hayes of Glenwood; Roquel, Norvel and George Davis of the home; six

great grandchildren and a host of relatives, friends and neighbors.

A sister and brother preceded him in death.

He joined the Blue Grove Christian church in 1907 and remained a member until his death. On June 26, 1951 Mr. and Mrs. Gold celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He was a kind and gentle man who was loved by all who knew him and like a father to his grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 10, 1954 at the Lenox Christian church at 2 p. m. with Rev Cecil Simonton officiating. Pall bearers were Roquel Davis, Norvel Davis, Rex McMahill, Elvin Shafer, Howard Vest and Ralph De Voe. Burial was at the Lenox cemetery.

Hale, Lyle –

Hale, Margaret -

Lyle Hale, 43, died of gunshot wounds in a Kansas City hospital

Saturday about 5 p. m. He was found Friday night in his trailer with two bullet wounds in his head. Police found the body of his wife, Margaret, Friday night in a closet in the trailer. A .25 caliber pistol was beneath her body.

Mr. Hale with his brother, Weldon, operated the carnival, "Hale's Shows of Tomorrow," which is owned by their mother, Mrs. Fern Hale. The carnival was showing at Kansas City, Kan., where the tragedy occurred.

According to the United Press, Wyandotte county coroner Joseph

Butler said Hale's wife apparently shot her husband and then herself. Friends said Mrs. Hale, 37, had recently been with her mother at Corning and had been suffering from a nervous breakdown.

Besides Hale's mother and brother, a son, David, 13, survives,

and a sister Mrs. Ted Bruington of Kansas City.

Funeral services for Mr. Hale were held here at the Bender

Funeral home Tuesday, June 22, at 1:30, the Rev Cecil Simonton

officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hale were held at Corning Monday,

June 21, at 9 a. m., the Rev Fr M J Powers. officiating. Burial

was in Calvary cemetery there.

Lyle Page Hale, son of Wayne and Fern Hale was born at Lenox,

Iowa July 17, 1910 and passed away at Kansas City, Mo., parlors.

June 19, 1954 at the age of 43.

He was a member of the Methodist church which he joined as a

young boy. He graduated from Lenox high school in 1928 and was the manager of the Telephone Company in Lenox from then until

about 1944. At the time of his death he was operating the "Hale's Shows of Tomorrow” in Kansas City.

He was married May 27, 1932 to Willa Marie Reed who died

Nov. 22, 1937. On July 22, 1939 he married Margaret E Long

who preceded him in death by one day.

He is survived by his son, David Duane, 13, of the home, his

mother, Mrs. Fern Hale and his brother Weldon, both of Lenox;

his sister, Mrs. Gertrude Bruington of Kansas City, Mo., and brother-in-law, Ted Bruington of Kansas City, as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Hinton, Sarah M. Blaine -

Sarah M., daughter of Philip and Senthy Elaine, was born in

Scotland County, Mo. March 29, 1878 and passed away in her

sleep in the early morning of May 25, 1954 at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 20 days.

On April 7, 1895 she was united in marriage to James L Hinton,

also of Scotland County.  They later moved to Lewis County, Mo. To this union were born seven children; two sons and a daughter died in infancy.

The surviving are two sons, Guy P and Lee G Hinton of Bedford;

two daughters, Mrs. Lula E Cortner of Blockton and Mrs. Lola M Quinn of Clearfield.

The family came to Iowa In 1908, locating In Page County, then to Taylor County, retiring in Clearfield in 1936. The husband and father died Aug. 6, 1949.

Mrs.  Hinton united with the Oak Hill Christian Church near Gravity and was faithful to her faith to the end. She was a member of the Christian church Home Dent. She loved her home and her friends.

To cherish her memory besides her two sons and two daughters are four brothers, George Blaine of Lenox, Robert John and Oil Blaine and two sisters, Cora Albridge and Magpie Albridge, all living near

Memphis, Mo. nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren,

other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the J R Crew Funeral Home Thursday at 2 p. m., Rev Wm Howes officiating. Burial was in, Clearfield cemetery. Casket bearers were six grandsons, Dale Walters, Curtis Raper, Wilfred Quinn, Ray and Donald Hinton and A Edmond.

Hockett, Corrie A. –

Corrie A Hockett, 85, died at 3 p. m., Friday at the Rosary Hospital in Corning. He had made his home with his nephew Max Hockett at Lenox.

Funeral services were Monday at 2 p m at the Bender Funeral Home here with the Rev Harold Butts officiating. Burial was in the Walnut Grove cemetery at Corning, la.

OBITUARY—HOCKETT

Corrie A. Hockett, son of Wm. A. Hockett and Amanda Spurgin A. Hockett was born Oct. 30, 1868 in New Providence, la., and passed

from this life April 30, 1954 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning.

When a young man he became a member of the Methodist church at Buck Grove, la., and had always lived a kindly life toward others. He enjoyed reading and caring for livestock.

Preceding him in death were his father and mother, also one

brother, Vlnton S. HockettSurviving are one sister, Mrs. Mary Wiley of Rialto, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Inez Hockett of Clarinda, la.; his nephew and family, Mr. and Mrs. Max Hockett, Harlan and Dan with whom he had made his home for the last twenty-six years; other nephews: Claude Wiley, Rapid City, S. Dak.; Homer Wiley, San Bernardino, Calif.; Albert Wiley, Billings, Mont.; Clyde Wiley of Chadron, Neb.; and Wm. A. Hockett of Montclair, New Jersey.  His nieces: Mrs. Helen Hawley, Clarinda; Mrs. Ruth McLin,  St. Petersburg, Fla.; Mrs. Eleanor Brown of Elmhurst, Ill.; Mrs. Leta Bush, Rialto, Calif.; Mrs. Hazel Doring of San Bernardino, Calif., and Mrs. Lois Burris of Billings, Mont.

Relatives from a distance attending services were Wm A Hockett, Moriclair, N. J.; Mrs. Eleanor Brown, Elmhurst, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. A J Hawley and Mrs.  Inez Hockett of Clarinda, and Harlan Hockett of Des Moines.

Kittle, Gladys West -

Services for Gladys West Kittle, age 50, of Denver, Colo., were held Monday afternoon, May 17 in the St Luke Episcopal church.

Burial in Fairmount.

She was born Jan. 11, 1904 in Sharpsburg and went to Colorado in 1925. She was a graadate of Adams State College in [?]. Gladys was married to Leslie Kittle in 1927 and two daughters were born to this union, Mrs. Kay Orton of Denver and Mrs. Ann Bullen of [?].

Mr. and Mrs. Kittle moved to Denver in 1951 and she began teaching in the Aurora school that year. She passed away Friday night, May 14 in the Presbyterian hospital after a long illness.

Surviving are her husband, Leslie Kittle, director of public relations at Colorado Women's College; two daughters, three grandchildren and a sister Mrs. Mable Rutledge of Omaha.

Little, Exie Lavina Reynolds -

Exie Lavina, daughter of Noah D and Hattie Reynolds, was born in Ringgold County, la., June 2, 1890 and passed away in Bedford, la. April  24, 1954 after a lingering illness at the age of 63 years, 10 months, 22 days.

On Feb 12, 1907 she was united in marriage to George Lester

Little of Knowlton, la. To this union were born two children, a son, Carroll Little of Burlington, la., and a daughter, Doris Pitt of Cromwell, la.

Mrs. Little lived the greater part of her life in the Clearfield vicinity and was a member of the Methodist church and Royal Neighbor  Camp 1023.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and

one granddaughter, Dixie Lee Little. To cherish her memory

besides her son and daughter are three brothers, Ross and

Clyde Reynolds of Redfield and Orr Reynolds of Mt Ayr; one

sister, Cora Polen Reynolds of San Bernardino, Calif.; one

grandson and three granddaughters, and one great grandson.

Other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held in Clearfield at the J R Crew Funeral

Home, the Rev C E McPherson officiating. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

McCreary, Ichabod A–

Ichabod A. McCreary, 78, died Sunday at 7:15 p.m. at the Clarinda hospital after an extended illness of several months.  He was born near Kirksville, Mo. and lived near Atlantic many years.  His home has been in Lenox only a few years.

Mr. and Mrs. McCreary had been married 49 years, Jan. 11.

Survivors: his wife, Lilly, 8 daughters, Mesdames Pauline Bells, Nodaway; Florence Day, Omaha; Norma Kaufmann, LaPorte, Minn.; Clara Keightley, Randolf, Mildred Spurgin, Rulo Neb.; Marvel Kellison, of Plattsmouth, Neb.; Edith Gardner Conway; Edrie Gardner

Farragut; one son, Robert E. McCreary of the U. S. Navy, of Norfolk, Va.; 1.brother, Tom of Woodburn, Ore., 24 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

The services were at the Methodist church in Conway Wednesday. Burial was in the cemetery in Conway.

Moore, Frances Lorita Long -

A tragedy occurred last night about 8 o'clock when a gas stove

exploded at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Laverne (Pepper) Moore,

2 miles south and 7 miles west of Lenox.

According to reports the four children of the Moores were at

the barn milking and the parents were in the house at the

time the explosion took place.  The children rushed in and carried

their parents from the burning house.  Neighbors called an ambulance and Mr. and Mrs. Moore were taken to Rosary Hospital

at Corning where Mrs. Moore died about 4 o'clock this morning.

Mr. Moore is suffering from severe burns.  The Lenox fire department was called but too late to save the house, but all other buildings were undamaged.

Moore, Frances Lorita Long

Moore, Harold LaVerne “Pepper” -

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 19, at the Fairview

church for Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Moore who were fatally injured last Wednesday evening by a gas explosion which occurred in the basement of their home.

Burial was in Guss cemetery.  Both husband and wife were

taken to Rosary hospital at Corning where Mrs. Moore died

early Thursday and Mr. Moore died at  12:30 p.m. the same day.

The home and contents were destroyed. The four children

who were at the barn and uninjured, are Martin, 16; Carol, 15;

Judy, 11; Fern, 8.  The Adams county coroner said it was evident that Mr. and Mrs. Moore were trying to light the water heater when the

tragedy occurred.

Harold Le Verne Moore, son of Harry and Fern Moore was born May 21, 1916, on a farm south of Nodaway, la. He departed this life June 17, 1954 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning la., at the age of 38 years and 27 days.

He was married Sept. 19, 1936 to Frances Long of Nodaway. To this union were born four children, Martin 16, Carol 15 Judy 11 and Fern 8.

In early life he became a member of the Methodist church at Nodaway and later became a member of the Fairview  Christian

Church near Corning where he was president of the Willing

Workers Class.

He is survived by his children, his father, Harry Moore of near

Guss; one sister Mrs. Eva Hartje of Adair and several nieces and nephews.  His mother preceded him in death in 1938.

Final services were held Saturday, June 19 at 2 p. m. from the Fairview Christian church near Corning with the Rev Roland

M. Wendell officiating. Music was furnished by Blanche Lund and Esther Roland with Vida Jackson at the piano. Interment was at the Guss cemetery.

Flower bearers were Carolyn Thomas, Joleen Ruben and Carol

Vogel. Pall bearers were Warren Mitchell, Delmar Freshour,

Marion Travis, Don Goodwin, Edward Thomas and Bob Hodren,

Frances Lorita, daughter of Harold and Esther Long was born Sept 27, 1919 on a farm near Huntley, Neb. She departed this life June 17, 1954 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning at the age of 34 years, 8 months and 21 days.

She was married Sept 19, 1936 to La Verne Moore of Nodaway.

To this union were born four children, Martin 16, Coral 15,

Judy 11, and Fern 8.

In early life she became a member of the Nodaway Methodist

church and later became a devoted member of the Fairview

Christian church near Corning where her services as Supt. of

the Sunday School will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her children, her father and mother, Mr.

and Mrs. Harold Long of Sharpsburg, la.; two sisters, Mrs. Byron

Northup of Gravity, la., and Mrs. Loden Brown of Orlando,

Fla.; a nephew, Eddie Northup and four nieces, Linda, Celia

and Louise Northup and Joan Brown.

Final services were held Saturday, June 19 at 2 p. m. from the Fairview church near Corning with the Rev Roland M Wendell officiating. Music was furnished by Blanche Lund and Esther Roland with Vida Jackson at the piano. Interment was at the Guss cemetery.

Flower bearers were Carolyn Thomas, Joleen Ruben and Carol Vogel. Pall bearers were Loyd Hariblin, Ernest Nook, Leo Evans,

Glen Haley, Roland Boltinghouse and Glen Williams.

Nelson, Albert LeRoy -

Roy Nelson, 73, passed away at his home here Tuesday evening,

June 8 at 9:15, after a long illness. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p m at the Bender Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery.

Mr. Nelson was a native of Lenox. He was in the feed and produce business here for 26 years, served as Mayor of Lenox, member of the city council, and superintendent of the Municipal light and water plant.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie, one son Wendel of Winterset,

his daughter-in-law, Ruby and two grandchildren, Richard and Connie; two sisters, Mrs. Edna Stevens of Creston, Mrs. Tom Manroe of Lenox; one brother, Ed Nelson of Lenox.

Nelson, Albert LeRoy -

Albert LeRoy Nelson, son of Matthew and Nancy Nelson was

born at Lenox, Iowa, Jan. 27, 1881, and died at his home in

Lenox, June 8, 1954, at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 12

days. Mr. Nelson spent his entire life in this community.

At an early age he was baptized into the Methodist church

and attended Bible school regularly in his younger days.

He was married Sept 21, 1909 to Nellie Connor, who survives.

Also surviving are one son, Wendel, a daughter-in-law Ruby

and two grandchildren, Richard and Connie Nelson. There are two living sisters, Mrs. Tom Manroe of Lenox and Mrs. Edna Stevens of Creston and one brother, Ed Nelson of Lenox.

In the line of civic service Mr. Nelson served as Mayor of Lenox,

and member of the City Council. He was in the produce and feed business here 26 years and later was superintendent of the Municipal Light & Water Works.

Funeral services were held at the Bender Funeral Home, July 11, 1954 with Rev. H. D. Butts officiating.  Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Orton, Phyllis -

Funeral services were Saturday at 2 p m at Atlantic for Phyllis Orton, 15, who died at a hospital in Denver, Colo., following an extended illness. She was a former resident of the Lenox and Prescott vicinities.   Survivors: her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Duane Orton of Atlantic and 2 younger sisters.

Pine, Jesse Ritchey –

Mrs. Jesse R. Pine, 78, died Saturday March 20, 1954 at 1:15 p.m. at the home of her son, Allen near Lenox.  She had lived in the Lenox vicinity 21 years.

Funeral services were Tuesday at the United Presbyterian Church here with the Rev. Willard M. Morris officiating.  Burial was in the cemetery at Diagonal.

Jesse R. Pine was born, the daughter of A. J. and Mary Ritchey Oct. 27, 1875 at Alexis, Ill., and passed away March 20, 1954 at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 21 days.

On Dec. 11, 1895, she was united in marriage to Fred A. Pine, and they made their home in the Alexis community for xi years.

In 1901 the family moved to a farm west of Diagonal, Ia., where they lived until they moved to Galesburg, Ill.  in 1920.  Five years later they returned to their farm near Diagonal, remaining until 1932, when they came to the Lenox community.

For many years, Mrs. Pine was a member of the Presbyterian church of Diagonal and then transferred her membership to the Lenox United Presbyterian Church. She remained active in the church until her final illness.

Surviving her are a son Max E., of Galesburg, Ill.; a daughter, Faye, (Mrs. W. R. Rees) of Mesa, Ariz.; and a son, Allen L of Lenox; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Her husband preceded her in death on Dec 27, 1945, and a son, Jack, died in 1933. Throughout her life, her family, her home, and her church were her principal interests.  Her many friends and

relatives remember her with love.

Reynolds, Jennie Pearl Bentley -

Jennie Pearl Bentley was born to John Mitchell and Mary Vashti Bentley in Ringgold County April 6, 1885 and passed away at the Thomas Nursing Home at Lenox June 4, 1954; age 89 years, 1 month and 28 days.

The last two months of her life were spent at the home of her

daughter, Mrs. Ruth McLaury in Lenox, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Charles Francis Reynolds March .6, 1908 at her home in Diagonal, Iowa. Three children blessed their home: Ruth Marie McLaury of Lenox; Charles Francis Reynolds who was reported missing in action over Yap Island in the Pacific July 15, 1944 and was officially declared dead two years later, Robert Ray Reynolds who died at the age of 4 Nov 19, 1923.

She leaves to mourn her departure her husband Charles Francis Reynolds who is in the Armstrong Nursing Home at Bedford, la.; her daughter Ruth McLaury; four granddaughters and six great grandchildren; also four brothers, Charles E. Bentley of Grand Rapids, Min.; Ray Bentley of Nampa, Idaho; Harry Bentley of Diagonal, John Bentley of Hawthorne, Calif.; also, three sisters, Mrs.

Ernie Williamson of Nampa, Ida.; Mrs. Fred Williamson of Benson, Minn.; Mrs. Gladys Wimer of St Paul, Minn. One sister Viola Whited of Des Moines preceded her in death.

Mrs. Reynolds spent most of her life on farms around Diagonal

and she and her husband moved to a farm near Clearfield, la., in 1921 and moved into their home town about 15 years ago.

Mrs. Reynolds joined the Methodist church on confession of faith in 1927 during the pastorate of Rev. McCartney. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a Gold Star mother.

She was a very patient soul, and had very poor health for a number of years. Her life centered about her family and children and grandchildren.  She was always a hard worker and found diversion in her flowers of which she was very fond. She was a good neighbor and a friend of all who knew her.

Funeral services were held June 6 at the Methodist church in Clearfield with Rev C E McPherson officiating. Burial in Clearfield Cemetery.

Rife, Mildred E. Sage -

Mrs.  Mildred E Rife, daughter of Charles and Ida Shawler Sage was born Oct 1, 1903 south of Clearfield and passed away April 8, 1954 at the age of 50 years, 6 months and 7 days.

She attended the rural schools and was a graduate of Clearfield

high school.

March 20, 1946 at Olathe. Kan., she was united in marriage to Forney Rife of Onawa, la., and they have since lived on the farm south of Clearfield.

She was a member of the Christian Church and also a 25 year member of Ed Otis W. R. C. 343 of which she was Treas. for 18  years.

Mrs. Rife was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Lena Mae and Mrs. Lila House. To cherish her memory besides her husband, are one brother, Frank R Sage of Clearfield and one sister Mrs. Marie Lewis of Creston.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p. m. at the Christian church, the Rev. Wm. Howes officiating. Interment in Clearfield cemetery.

Riley, Fred J. -

Fred J Riley, 66, a former resident of the Lenox vicinity, died

at his home in Millerton, la., at 1:15 a. on Friday. Funeral services

were held at the Salem church, 5 miles northwest of Lenox, at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday.  Rev Homer Caskey of Council Bluffs officiated. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Mr. Riley lived in the Lenox vicinity for many years before moving to Millerton, m Wayne county, about 17 years ago. Surviving him are his widow, Etta; a son, Lavern of Des Moines; a daughter, Mrs. Letha

Thompson of Millerton.; a grandson; two sisters and eight brothers.

Funeral services were at the Ewing Funeral home in Fontanelle

Saturday at 2 p. m., for Charles Sproul, 78, who died Thursday afternoon at his home in Fontanelle. Burial in the Fontanelle cemetery.

Survivors are 3 daughters, Mrs. George Davison and Mrs. Erskine Blair of Lenox, Mrs. Dave Kenargy of Clarinda; 3 sons and a number of grandchildren.

Stoakes, Rex -

Van Fleet, Hattie Belle Archibald -

Hattie Belle Archibald, daughter of George and Eliza Archibald,

was born Jan. 19, 1877 near Moulton, Iowa, and passed away June 14, 1954 at the Lenox Rest Home, at the age of 77.

While a small child both parents passed away. At that time she went to make her home with her aunt in Creston.  After completing high school she taught in the rural schools near Lenox.

As a young woman she made her confession of Christ and worked faithfully in the church as long as her health permitted.  At the time of her death she was a member of the Christian Church of Lenox.

On July 1, 1903, she was united in marriage to Henry Van Vleet.

A home was established on a farm east of Lenox. To this union

was born one daughter, Martha Ellen, who passed away in August, 1933.

The family moved to a farm near Orient in 1918 where they

resided until the death of her husband in July 1940. At that

time she moved again to Lenox where she made her home until

because of failing health she entered the Lenox Rest Home where she has been cared for the past four years.

She was a home-loving person, especially kind and patient in her care for her husband, and daughter in the long illnesses that preceded their deaths. She was a good neighbor to those of her community.  Besides the daughter and husband she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William Archibald of Moulton and Bert Archibald of Lenox.

She is survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces,

nephews and cousins as well as well as friend and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from Bender Funeral Home, conducted by Rev Cecil Simonton. Burial at Orient.

Wall, John Adam -

John Adam Wall, son of Adam and Polly Wall, was born on a

farm near Grant City, Mo., May 9. 1870 and departed this life at

his home in Clearfield May 6, 1954 at the age of 83 years, 11

months and 27 days.

On May 71, 1888 he was united in marriage to Cora L Stanbus at

Grant City. They established their home nearby.  To this union were born five sons and four daughters, two sons, David and Don, preceded the father in death.

Surviving are the three sons, Orville and Otis Wall of Clearfield; Floyde Wall of Shenandoah; also the four daughters, Angle Waugh,

Afton; Fern Lourie, of Convay; Hazel Nelson, Roswell, N. M.;

and Frieda Snoenhair, Creston.

The family lived near Grant City until 1911 when they moved to Ringgold County, la., near Diagonal. Mr. Wall later operated a produce house until they moved to Lenox. The past eight years have been spent in Clearfield.

He was a faithful and consistent member of the Christian church from his youth. He was a loving husband, father and enjoyed visiting with friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents. two sons and one sister.

Surviving besides the wife and children are 16 grandchildren,

20 great grandchildren, 2 nieces and 2 nephews, other relatives

and friends.

Funeral services. Rev Wm Howes officiating, were held Monday at Clearfield Christian church with burial in Lenox cemetery.
