7th in Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services and burial were

Arlie Arnold, 64, passed away Monday at 5 p. m. at the home of her son, J. D.
Arnold, in Des Moines. She had been ill for some time, having recently
undergone surgery.

services were held today (Thursday) from the Arnold
Funeral Home in Lenox, with
the Rev. C.W. Rissinger officiating. Interment Friday morning in the Masonic cemetery in Des
Moines.
Survivors:
her husband, O. P. Arnold; one son, Joy P. Arnold
of Des Moines; one daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.

Arlie Alberta Nicholls -
Arlie
Alberta Nicholls, daughter of Daniel and Mary Nicholls,
was born in Warren county, Iowa, April 7, 1887 and passed
away at the home of her son in Des Moines, Iowa, January
28.
1952 at the age of 64 years.
She grew
to womanhood in Warren and Marion counties,
living most of her life in Marion county, until coming to, Lenox
in 1917. She was married to O. P. Arnold on
October 17, 1906. To this union one son, Joy P., was born.
She
united with the Christian church at Dallas, Iowa, when just a girl, later moving
her membership to Lenox, where she became an active and loyal member n the Church of Christ here. She was a member of C. W. F. P. M. club, past Matron of the Order of the
Eastern Star at Lenox; also a member of the M. F. O. club and of the American
Legion
Auxiliary.
She
was preceded in death by her father and mother and only sister several years ago. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband,
O. P. Arnold, Lenox; one son, Joy P. Arnold and wife Velda of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Joy Dean and Jo Ann Arnold of Des Moines, one
aunt, Mrs. Glen Hartley of Des Moines, one niece, Veva,
of Minneapolis, Minn.; nine cousins and a host of friends arid neighbors. She was a loving companion and mother, always
faithful in the discharge of her many duties. Her cheerful disposition has won her many friends and she will be
greatly missed in our community.
Funeral
services were conducted at the Arnold Funeral Home Jan.. 31 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. C. W. Risinger officiating. Music was by Mmes.
Lela Long and Vera Roll, with Mrs. Ruth Boltinghouse at the piano. Pallbearers were Orval Plants, Joe Brown, Harold Welch, Leo Caskey, John Drain and Dwain Orton. Interment in the Masonic
cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mrs.
Dean Ash, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Curphey of Onarga, Ill. Thursday, Nov. received word November 15th, that her husband had been killed in action with the U.
S. Army m Korea. No further particulars were given. Besides his wife he leaves
a six weeks old daughter. Mrs. Ash is a niece of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cheese.

services were held at St. Patrick's cemetery on Monday for John Barrett, 39, of
San Francisco, Calif. He was born in Lenox and lived here until 1922.
Survivors: his mother, Mrs. Catherine Barrett, of San Francisco, Calif., one
sister, Mrs. Harold Clifford, of Omaha.
His
father, Patrick Barrett, preceded him in death. The deceased
was a veteran of World War II and was manager of a cigar store in San Francisco.

Herbert George -
Herbert
George Beach, of George and Kathleen Beach, was born May 1, 1903, on a farm
southwest of Lenox. It was here that he spent his boyhood days and was later
engaged in farming for some time, after which he became an automobile salesman
in and around Lenox and
Corning,
until he went west, eventually locating in Seattle, Wash.
He
passed away at the Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane on Wednesday, Sept. 5 1951,
and Requiem High Mass was held on the following Saturday at the Sacred Heart
church there. Interment in Spokane.
He was
married in the year 1937 to Miss Josephine Hegee of
Maysville,
N. D. To this union were born two sons, Frederick and Dennis. The family was
spending some time in Alaska when Frederick met death in an accident. Upon
returning to Spokane, Herbert resumed work in the automobile business.

to mourn his passing are his wife and son; three brothers,

Bennison, Lennie Johns -
Mrs. Lennie Johns Bennison, widow of
the late J. H. Bennison, died Friday, July 27th, in
Kewanee, Ill. Her husband was a former
president of the First National National Bank here,
and the family resided in what is now the Howard Eno property on east Nebraska avenue. They were Lenox
residents from 1898 to 1910.
Born
Oct. 22, 1862 at Hazel Green, Wis., Mrs. Bennison was
the youngest of five daughters of Joseph and Jane Paull Johns. She was married to Jacob H. Bennison on April
9, 1884. Her husband preceded her in death Dec. 26, 1950.
They
had three children, all of who survive: Henry P. Bennison
of Kewanee, Ill., Mrs. Jane Bennison Flint of Sioux
Falls, S. D., and Mrs. Elizabeth Bennison Anderson of
Erie, Ill. Six grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Bennison was a member of the Congregational church and the
Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral
services were held Monday, July 30th at Kewanee with burial there.

Robert Ellsworth -
Funeral
services were held here Tuesday afternoon from the Arnold Funeral Home for
Robert Benson 75, a former resident who passed away Friday at the home of his
daughter in Topeka, Kans. Interment in Fairview cemetery. Among survivors is
Clarence Haynes, a
brother-in-law of the deceased.
Obituary
Robert
Ellsworth Benson, son of William Z. and Margaret Benson, was born at Knoxville,
Iowa, April 4, 1876 and passed away Oct. 12, 1951 at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. Arthur Gregg, in Topeka, Kans., having lived to be 75 years, 6 months and
8 days of age.
He
grew to manhood at Conway, Iowa, and come to Lenox in 1902. On Dec. 21, 1904,
he was united in marriage to Bertha Haynes. To this union five children were
born: Vernice Celia, who passed away in infancy, and
the following four children who survive: Bruce Benson of, Denver, Colo., Robert
Benson of Gilroy, Calif., Mrs. Wilma Gregg of Topeka, Kans., and Mrs. Ailene Herman of Des Moines.
Most
of his married life was spent in business in Lenox with the exception of a
short time spent in Washington state and several years in Missouri. He was a
member of the Hope Lutheran church of Topeka, Kans.
All
through his life he was a devoted husband and father and a good neighbor and
friend. Besides the four children he is survived by his wife: Bertha, one
brother William C. Benson of Omaha, Neb., one sister, Mrs. Sevy Nobel of Jasper, Mo., and eight grandchildren.

Harry
Black received word on Saturday of the death of a sister-
in-law at Mora, Minn., on June 14th, Mrs. Chas. Black, 71. The body was brought to Red Oak and the
funeral was held Monday at 2 p. m. at the Center Ridge church with burial
nearby. She is survived by her husband, three sons and one daughter. If she had
lived until
June
20th, Mr. and Mrs. Black would have celebrated their golden wedding
anniversary. Attending the funeral from Clearfield were:

Funeral
services will be held today (Thursday) at 2:30 p. m. at the Church of Christ
for L. C. Boltinghouse, who died June 18 at 2:30 p.
m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ethel Bryant in Des Moines. He was 97
years of age and had hoped to live to be 100. Rev. Robert E. Seath of Des Moines, assisted by Rev. Merwin Goad will have charge
of the service. Burial in the Lenox cemetery. The Arnold
Funeral Home is in charge. Music by Metta Porter, Martha Folcey, Leo Caskey and Paul
Davis, with Barbara Moneymaker at the organ. Pallbearers: W. Ernest
Bryant, Kenneth, Boltinghouse, Wayne Carter,
George Boltingihouse, Cleo Boltinghouse and Harlan Armstrong.
Mr. Boltinghouse was born in Bloomington, Ind., May 23, 1854.
He was
married to Sarah Freeman in 1874. They first established
their home at Edgington, Ill., coming to Lenox, Iowa in
1879. Mr. Boltinghouse made his home in Lenox until
four years ago, when he went to Des Moines to live with his daughter, Mrs.
Glenn Bryant.
His occupation was farming. He farmed his home
place near until 1910, then retired and moved to Lenox. He became a member of the
church of Christ at the Blue Grove church in early manhood, later transferring his membership
to the church in Lenox, then the West Side Church of Christ in Des Moines.
To
this family were born 11 children. Preceding him in death were
his wife, Sarah; four sons, James, Charles, Alonzo and Orval.

three sons, Joseph of Ellston; Walter, Clearfield;
Floyd, of Lenox; four daughters, Mrs. Claude Carter, Sharpsburg; Mrs. Arthur
Murray, Edgeley, N. Dak.;

Boltinghouse,
Lewis C. -
Lewis
C. Boltinhouse, the son of son of Isaac and Zelpha Boltinghouse was born May
23, 1854, near Bloomington, Indiana; departed this life at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Glenn Bryant,
in Des Moines, Iowa, June 18, 1951; age 97 years and 26
days.
He
grew to manhood in Indiana, where he married Sarah Freeman on August 6, 1874.
This couple moved to a farm near Edgington, Illinois,
in 1876, thence in 1897 to a farm in Grove township west of Lenox, Iowa, where
they lived until November, 1910, at which time they moved to a home on East
Temple street in Lenox. Mother and Father Boltinghouse lived in this home until November 29, 1938,
when his wife Sarah preceded him in death, having enjoyed 64 years
of wedded life and their family of 11 children.
L. C.,
as he was better known after careful study of the Bible, and with a definite,
firm conviction that the word and way is clear, became a member of the Blue
Grove Church of
Christ
(then near Sharpsburg). When the family
moved to Lenox,
he transferred his membership to the Lenox Christian church, then later to the
West Side Church of Christ in Des Moines, were he was a member at the time of
his passing. During his church life, he served as a deacon and a trustee; at
his departure he still held to that faith which all men must know, if one is to
live eternally through grace.
Other
than his wife, four sons, James, Charles, Alonzo and
Orval,
preceded him in death. Seven children are living: three sons, Joseph of Ellston, Iowa; Waiter of Clearfield, and Floyd of Lenox;
four daughters: Mrs. Claude Carter of Sharpsburg, Mrs. Arthur Murray of Edgeley, N. Dak., Mrs. Clarence
Armstrong of Lenox and Mrs. Glenn Bryant of Des Moines. Other living members of
his
family are: 20 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and two
great great grandchildren.
Five
grandchildren have preceded grandchildren have preceded
him in his passing. Father Boltinghouse retained his
interest in life, people and current happenings till the last, always enjoying
a visit with friends and family—a full life lived across nearly a century.
Those
who knew him best, will miss him most.
Pallbearers
were six of his grandsons, Cleo Boltinghouse, George Boltinghouse, Kenneth Boltinghouse,
Harlan Armstrong, Wayne Carter and Ernest Bryant. Ministers in charge: Robert W. Seath, Des Moines, and MerwinCoad,
Lenox. Interment in Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Brokaw, Willis E. –
Willis
E. Brokaw was born in Lynn county, Iowa, April 22, 1869, and passed away the
morning of May 23, 1951, at his home,, 2740 E. Euclid,
Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 1 day.
At the
age of one year he moved with his parents to Adams county,
where he grew to manhood. He was married Dec. 24, 1903, to Inez Mills, who
survives him as do their seven children: Wesley of Mitchelville,
Earl of St. Charles, Fern Chandler of Hannibal, Mo., June
of Lenox, Carl and Roland and Hazel Cross of Des Moines. Also
surviving are one sister, Mrs. Crista Caskey of Collins, Mont., nine grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Thelma in 1926, also a granddaughter,
Shirley Chandler in 1947.
He
reared his family in and around Adams county, where he
was well known. 17 years ago he moved to Des Moines, where he
lived at the time of his passing. His illness
was of short duration,
lasting less than two weeks.
Funeral
services were con ducted from the Boyd Roland funeral home in Corning on
Friday, May 25, with the Rev. Merwin Coad officiating. Pall bearers were nephews of the
deceased: Charlie Brokaw, Walter Brokaw, Leo Brokaw, Stanley Brokaw, George
Brokaw and Merrill Riley.

Mrs.
Mary C. Brown, 78, died at the Methodist hospital In. St.
Joseph,
Mo., at 1 p. m. Friday. She had been in the hospital
ten days. Her home was in Parnell, Mo.

Rev.
E. Day of Maryville, Mo., officiating. Her
granddaughter,
Mrs.
Annabelle Brown, sang at the funeral. Burial in the
Parnell
cemetery.

Burr,
Mervin –
Mervin
Burr, 26, of 802 Payson Ave., Quincy, Ill., was killed instantly Thursday
afternoon, Jan. 10h, when struck by an automobile in that city while walking
home from his work with the Riverside Coal Company. He was the son of Henry and Goldie (Leedom) Burr and was a native of Novinger, Mo. and had been
a resident of Lenox until October of 1948.
Young
Burr was struck by a car as it attempted to pass another vehicle. He suffered head injuries and one foot was
mangled.
Having
lived in Quincy since last April, Mervin made his home with an uncle and aunt,
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Attey. He was a member of the Baptist church. He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving
are his mother, Mrs. Goldie Watts of LeGrande, Iowa,
one sister, Mrs. Arthur Rush of Quincy, Ill., several uncles, aunts and
cousins. Roy Leedom of Lenox and Lloyd Leedom of Creston are both uncles
of the deceased.
Funeral
services were held at Kirksville, Mo. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Archie
Cooper. Burial in the
Novinger, Mo. cemetery.

Claude
Carter, 71, prominent farmer and former local businessman,
died Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Clarinda Municipal hospital following a heart
attack. Funeral services, in charge of
the Arnold Funeral Home, were held Tuesday, June 12 at the Church of Christ, with
the Rev. Robert W. Seath and the Rev. Merwin Coad officiating. Honorary
pallbearers were Dewey Evans, Albert Beck, Chas. Beck, Chas. Knott, Claude
Plowman, Melvin Williams, Chas. Wurster, Ralph Gaines
and Lloyd Chandler. Active pallbearers:
Dean Evans, Dwain Beck, Roy Beck, Leonard Knott, Marvin Boyer, Everett Bolinger, Jerry Rainforth and
Kenneth Cox. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Underwood, Mrs. Jennie
Evans and George Gillette with Mrs. Watson at the piano. Interment
in the Lenox cemetery.
Surviving
are his wife,
one son Wayne of the state of Washington, two grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.

Carter,
Claude E. -
Claude
E. Carter, son of James T. and Frances Lovitt Carter,
was born near Sharpsburg, Iowa, on Oct. 20, 1879 and passed away of an acute
heart attack at the Clarinda hospital on June 9, 1951, at the age of 71 years,
7 months and 11 days Most of his entire life was lived on the same farm his
father homesteaded in 1878. He spent one
year in the west, but returned to Iowa and bought a home on East Temple Street,
where he resided ten years while in business. He moved back to the farm in 1931 and was engaged in farming until his
health failed.
When
quite young, Claude united with the Blue Grove Church of Christ and later
transferred his membership to the Lenox church.
March
26, 1906, he was united in marriage to Bertha Boltinghouse.
To
this union, two children were born, L. Wayne of Tacoma, Wash., and Frances Bernita, who preceded her father in death in 1916. He was
also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Darwin and
one sister, Olivia Gordon. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Bertha, son
Wayne, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren
and a host of friends.
Because
of his unselfish concern for the welfare of others, he will
be remembered as a good husband and father and a good
neighbor and friend to all who knew him.

H. Cole, father of Mrs. Kenneth Eberle, passed away
Saturday July 7th at 6:30 p.m. at the home of another daughter, Mrs.

health for the past 18 months. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Jan. 11, 1930.
Surviving

Josephine Munyon -
Mrs. Adley Cook, 89, died at her home in Kent, Wednesday evening
of last week. She had been in failing health for the past several months.
Funeral
services were held at the Methodist church in Kent at
2:30 p.m. Sunday. Her son, Rev. Claude
Cook of Des Moines officiated the services, assisted
by Rev. C. E. McPherson. Burial was in
the Morgan cemetery south of Kent.
Josephine Munyon, was born at Viroqua,
Wis., July 29, 1862. She was the
daughter of William and Sarah Humphrey Munyon. She was married at St. Joseph, Mo., April 2,
1885 to Adley Cook. She had lived in Kent all of her married life. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 23,
1946.
Mr. Cook was a member of the Methodist
Church and of the S.S.S. Club in Creston.
Surviving
are four sons, Rev. Claude Cook of Des Moines, Roy Cook of Des Moines, Gaile Cook of Kent, Wayne Cook of Yakima, Wash.; a
daughter, Mrs. Vera Westerbeck of Des Moines, four
sisters, Mrs. Idella M. Barr of Omaha, Nebr., Mrs.
Edith Darrow of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Minnie Ball of Ohio and Mrs. Maud McCoun of St. Joseph, Mo., 10 grandchildren and seven great
grandchildren.

Dean, a former resident of Clearfield, died May 8 in
Milwaukee,
Wis. Burial was m Ellendale, N. Dak. He is survived
by his wife, two sons Robert of Des Moines and Ray of Creston,
one daughter,
Dora Andrews of Jerome, Ida.

Dennis, Sharene -
Sharene Dennis, 10 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Dennis, died Sunday at
10:30 p. m. in a Denver, Colo. hospital of bulbar polio. She and her parents
and sister, Vickie Jeanne, were vacationing in the western state. Rushed to
Denver when she became ill, she was placed in an iron lung and her case became
critical in a short time. The Denver doctor also thought Vickie Jeanne
had a light case of polio.
Services
were held here Wednesday at 2:30 p. m., with the Arnold Funeral Home In charge,
at the Church of 'Christ. The Rev. Merwin Goad of
Boone, former pastor of the church conducted the services. Interment
in Fairview cemetery.
Surviving
are her parents and sister, besides her grandparents,
Mr.
and Mrs. Harvey Dennis, all of Lenox. This is the first case of
polio in Taylor County this year.
