Alkire, Carrie Maggie Garrett Green –

Carrie Maggie Garrett, daughter of Jacob and Mary Ann Garrett was born five miles northwest of Gravity in Taylor County on February 9, 1886 and passed away in Clarinda, Iowa on September 15, 1956 at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 6 days.

 

She grew to womanhood in Taylor County, attended school at the Wesley Chapel school.  She united with the Christian Church in Gravity believing as in her favorite song, “He Leadeth Me.”

 

She was married on April 13, 1904 to Thomas Marsh Green.  To this union five children were born. They made their home in Sharpsburg, where Mr Green was employed in the post office, until 1906 then moved to Notoma, Kansas, living there until the time of Mr Green's

death. She moved back to Gravity and made her home a number

of years. She was a member of the Rebekah lodge.

 

After the children were married she united in marriage to Hiram Wilson Alkire. November 21 1934, who with her children, 1 sister, 3 brothers, 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of friends, mourn her passing.

 

The children surviving are: Jacob Green, Blockton; Mary McCoy, Zillah, Wash; James Green, Cook, Wash.; Fannie Terry, Englewood, Colo.; Marshie Sexton, Lyle. Wash.; one sister, Jane, Fairplay, Mo

3 brothers, Sam Garrett of Natoma, Kan.; Frank Garrett, Clarinda; Charles Garrett, Lenox.

 

She maintained her own home until 3½  years ago when failing health made it necessary to spend the time between her children. In January of 1956 she was taken to the hospital  where she passed away.

 

She was a good mother, wife and neighbor and will be remember by all who knew her.

 

Funeral services were Sept. 19 at the Gravity Christian Church with Cecil Simonton officiating.  Burial was at Gravity.

Askins, Alfred Jr. -

Mr and Mrs Harry Rogers and Mr and Mrs Floyd Fickess of Gravity expect to go to Kansas City Saturday to attend the funeral of their nephew, Alfred Askins, Jr. 23, the son of the ladies’ sister, the former Frances Beckwell of Sharpsburg.  The body of the young Askins was found in a field northwest of Warrensburg Sept. 6.  He had suffered a heavy blow to the right side of his head.

 

He had left Kansas City in his car, accompanied by Harold Amer, 20, expecting to go on a fishing trip to the Ozarks.  They were to return Aug. 5.

 

Amer is being held for questioning.  He had been arrested for speeding several days ago but released.  After Askins was reported missing police discovered that his car was being driven by Amer who was also using gasoline credit cards belonging to Askins.  After the car was recovered Askins’ billfold was found under a floor mat, minus any money and his wrist watch was reportedly being worn by his former companion.

 

The car and Amer were found at a motel.

 

Alfred Askins Jr. was single.  The family home is at 4420 Northwood Ave., Kansas City.

Austin, Earl -

Earl Austin, 67, retired farmer, died Sept. 10, at his home in Grant City, Mo. He had suffered a heart attack. He had lived at Grant City the past 12 years.

 

Survivors: his wife, Mary; 2 sons, Don, of Grant City, Lester, of Eugene, Ore.; 2 daughters, Mrs Mildred Rhinehart, of Grant City, Mo., Mrs Nellie Campbell, of Springfield, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Stanley of Lenox and Bill of Redding.

 

Funeral services were Wednesday Sept. 12 at Prugh's Funeral

Home in Grant City, Mo.  Burial in the Grant City cemetery. Mr and Mrs Stanley Austin, a nephew, and wife, of Lenox attended the services Wednesday.

Boltinghouse, Floyd Ernest –

Floyd E. Boltinghouse suffered a heart attack Monday morning about 8:30 and passed away at his home at 11:45 am.  He had not been well for a few days but had been up that morning as usual. His death is a shock to a large circle of relatives and friends.

 

Mr. Boltinghouse was born on a farm west of Lenox and was a

lifelong resident of Taylor county. In 1920 he was married to Ruth Nixon, who survives. They lived four years on a farm west of Sharpsburg and then moved to the home on East Temple Street where they have since resided.

 

Floyd was a member of the Lenox Church of Christ which he served as deacon and trustee.

 

He was a veteran of World War 1 and spent eleven months in France and Germany with the 88th Division. He was a member of Parkinson Post No. 250 and of the American Legion.

 

He was interested in good horses and was an active member of the Lenox Stock and Saddle Club. He was ringmaster of the annual Society Horse Show for the past several years

 

Besides his widow, he leaves two brothers, Joe of Ellston and Walter  of Clearfield and four sisters, Mrs Bertha Carter and Mrs Glen Bryant of Des Moines, Mrs Clarence Armstrong of Lenox and Mrs Mae Murray of Edgeley, N. Dak.  His parents and 4 brothers preceded him in death.

 

Mr. Boltinghouse was 61 years old.  Funeral services are being held here today, Thursday, from the Lenox Church of Christ, conducted by Cecil Simonton of Lenox and E. F. Hagee of St. Joseph.  Burial is to be in the Lenox Cemetery.

Boltinghouse, Floyd Ernest –

Floyd Ernest Boltinghouse, the son of Lewis C and Sarah Freeman

Boltinghouse, was born October 23, 1694 in Taylor county, Iowa; departed this life Aug 27, 1956 at his home in Lenox, Iowa.

 

He spent his boyhood days on a farm west of Lenox moving with

his parents to Lenox in 1910. He later took up farming which was

his life time occupation. On March 3, 1920 he was united in marriage to Minnie Ruth Nixon. They lived on a farm one and one-half miles west of Sharpsburg for five years, moving to their present home on E. Temple street in Lenox in 1925.

 

He became a member of the Blue Grove Church of Christ at an early age and later transferred his membership with his wife, Ruth, to the Lenox Church of Christ. He was a faithful member serving as a deacon and trustee for many years, and a member of the church choir.

 

He served in the armed forces in World War I for two years, serving in the 313th Supply Train 88th Division. Eleven months of this time was spent in France and Germany.

 

He leaves to mourn: his wife Ruth; four sisters, Mrs Bertha Carter and Mrs Glen Bryant, both of Des Moines; Mrs May Murray of Edgeley, N. Dak.; Mrs Clarence Armstrong of Lenox; two brothers, Joseph of Ellston; Walter of Clearfield; and a host of other relatives and friends.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and four brothers, James, Charles, Alonzo and Orval.

 

He was a charter member of Parkinson Post No. 250 of the American Legion.  He had a number of fine horses and was an active member of the Lenox Stock and saddle Club. He had served as ringmaster for the local society horse show a number of years. He was a loving husband and a faithful friend. He was deeply loved by nieces and

nephews. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

Bryant, Gale Boltinghouse, William J Nixon, Lloyd James and Ray Nixon. Ministers in charge were. Cecil Simonton, Lenox, and

E F Hagee of St Joseph, Mo. Interment in Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Brown, Virgil Stanley –

Virgil Stanley Brown, 70, of Prescott, died early Thursday at Las Animas, Colo. where he was visiting.

 

Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at the Stringtown Church with Rev. John Shidler officiating, and burial in the Stringtown Cemetery.

 

Surviving are four sons Darrell, Roscoe, and Delmar, all of Lenox and Austin of Prescott, two daughters, Mrs Thelma Brinker of Timberville, Ohio and Mrs Wilma Boswell of Cedar Falls.  Also surviving are 15 grandchildren.  His wife preceded him in death last March.

Clute, Fred M. -

Fred M Clute, 82, died at noon Tuesday, Jan 1 at his home here. He had been ill only a few days. Funeral services are being held today, Thursday at 1 p.m. at the United Presbyterian church with the pastor, the Rev James Eddy officiating. Burial will be at Bedford.

Mr Clute was born in Rippon, Wisc., and came with his parents to Taylor county when two years old. They first lived at Gravity, then Bedford and Clearfield. With his wife he moved to Lenox in 1932. They observed their 61st wedding anniversary Christmas day, 1956.

 

The deceased was in the hardware business at Clearfield and was a plumber in Lenox. For several years he had been employed by the post office Department in charge of transferring mail to and from the trains.

 

Survivors are his widow Clara; three daughters, Mrs Helen Ethington, Ames, Mrs Vesta Bailey, Diagonal, Mrs Pauline Williams, Detroit, and one son George of Monroe, Mich. One daughter died in infancy. There are 9 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

 

Clute was a member of the United Presbyterian church, Masonic Lodge and Woodmen of the World.

Clute, Fred M. -

Fred M. Clute, son of Martin Clute and Eliza Smith Clute, was born at Ripon, Wisconsin, June 22, 1874, passed away Jan 1, 1957, at his home in Lenox at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 8 days.

 

The family came to Gravity in 1876. Later they moved to Bedford where he and Clara Greenlee were married Christmas Day, 1895. To this union were born four daughters and one son. One of the daughters, Maxine, died in infancy.

 

In 1914 they moved to Clearfield making their home there until 1932 when they moved to Lenox. On Dec 25, 1956, they observed

their 61st wedding anniversary.

 

Mr Clute had been employed by the Standard Oil Company while at Bedford and Clearfield, later operating a hardware and plumbing business. The past 12 years he was an employee at the Lenox Post Office. He was a member of the Lenox United Presbyterian church, a member of the Woodmen of the World, and of the Masonic Lodge in

Clearfield.

 

He is survived by his wife, Clara; 3 daughters, Mrs Helen Ethington of Ames, Mrs Vesta Bailey of Diagonal, Mrs Pauline Williams, Detroit, Mich.; one son, George, of Monroe, Mich.; 9 grandchildren and 19

great grandchildren of whom he was very fond. He will be greatly missed by his family, relatives and many friends.

 

Funeral services were at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox Jan 3, 1957. Rev James Eddy read the 23rd Psalm, a favorite passage of both Mr and Mrs Clute. His five grandsons, Dean Ethington, Claire Ethington, Dale Ethington, Loren Bailey, Clare Russie and his friend,

James Calvin acted as pall bearers.

 

Burial for Mr Clute was in Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Davis, Mae McFee –

Mrs. Mae Davis, 78, died Sunday at Seattle, Wash.  Funeral services were Wednesday at Seattle, Wash.  Her husband preceded her in death.

 

Survivors include 5 children, a number of grandchildren, 1 brother, James McFee of Creston, 1 sister, Mrs. Margaret Choate, of Lenox and 1 nieces, Mrs. Wilma Tyler of Lenox.

Finn, Geo -

Geo Finn of Sacramento, Calif., died Friday morning, Nov 23, according to word received by his sister, Miss Lizzie Finn. He lived near Lenox from the time he was 2 years old until  he grew to manhood. Later he was a gold miner in Alaska and British Columbia. He spent several winters in Lenox with his brother, Ed and sister, Lizzie.

 

Funeral services and burial were in Sacramento. Besides his sister, he leaves his brother A J Finn at Jefferson, Iowa.

Gold, Anson James –

Anson James Gold, son of John and Emeline Gold was born Oct. 28, 1883 in Anderson, Ind. and passed away Sept. 17, 1956 at the University Hospital in Iowa City.  He was 72 years, 10 months and 20 days of age.

 

When he was a small boy he moved with his parents to Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Eliza Richards June 11, 1910.  To this union was born one daughter, Lela.  In the year of 1918 he moved with his family to Conway where he has since resided.

 

When a young man he united with the Blue Grove Church.  He was a kind and loving father and a friend to all who knew him.

 

He leave to mourn his passing his companion, his daughter and son-in-law Mr and Mrs Albert Loeffler, two grandchildren, Robert and Sharon Loeffler of Ferguson, Ia., 3 brothers, Johnnie of Albert Lea, Minn., Vernon of Seymour, Iowa, Orville Gold of Countil Bluffs and a brother-in-law, Earl Beadel of Lenox, a sister-in-law Mrs. Inez Gold, Lenox and a host of relatives and friends.

 

Services were held Thursday Sept. 20 at the Methodist Church in Conway by Rev. Howard Devore.  Burial in Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Hamilton, Ross G. -

Ross G Hamilton was born near Northboro, Iowa, in Page County Sept 19, 1889, and passed away Friday morning at 2:30 o'clock Jan 4, 1957. He was 67 years, 3 months, 16 days old. He was the youngest son of Joseph and Nancy Hamilton.

 

He was educated in the schools of Page and Taylor Counties and lived most of his life in Iowa except 3 years on a farm near Sargent, Nebr. He returned to Iowa and did farming most of his life. On account of failing health he moved to Clearfield 3 years ago.

 

Saturday evening, he suffered a stroke from which he never

regained consciousness.

 

On March 29 1911 he was united in marriage with Laura Ethel Wallace. His father, mother, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death He was of a friendly and kind nature and will be missed very by his loved ones and friends.

 

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Crew Funeral Home in Clearfield, burial In the Clearfield cemetery.

 

Out of town people attending the funeral were Mr and Mrs Milo Hamilton, Mr and Mrs Harry Loop of Fairfield, Mr and Mrs Boyd Hamilton Sr and son of Farragut. Mr and Mrs Lloyd Hullinger and son. Mrs Jocie Chilcote and Miss Francis Connor of Bedford, Mrs Edna Fattig and friend and Clarence Beattyof Creston, Mrs Beula M Rush and Mrs Cloris Hetrick of Omaha, Mr and Mrs Marvin Rush, Ft. Cook, Nebr. Mr and Mrs Ralph Lyddon, Leon.

House, Harry –

Harry House, son of Richard and Ellen Felvry House was born near Alexis, Ill. April 15, 1868 and departed this life at the home of his daughter Mrs Don Bennett, northwest of Clearfield Dec. 5, 1956 at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 20 days.

 

Mr House received his education and grew to manhood near the place of his birth and chose farming as his occupation.

 

Mr House followed farming as long as physical health permitted.  He was an upright citizen devoted to his family and highly respected by his friends and neighbors.  His wife and companion died Mar 4, 1945.  Besides his wife and infant daughter, he was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister.

 

To cherish his memory are his two daughters, also a niece Mrs Merrill Reynolds of Boulder, Colo. who was reared in the home, seven grandchildren, Paul and Dean Nelson, Mrs Thelma Brown, Mrs Darlene Taylor, Ivan Bennett, Lois Rodman and Joan Bennett, Richard and Linda Reynolds, 15 grandchildren, one brother, Fred House, La Plata, Mo, other relatives and many friends.  Funeral services were Friday Dec. 7 at the Christian Church in Clearfield.  The Rev. Ronald Graham, the minister.  Casket bearers to Clearfield Cemetery were the grandsons, Dean Nelson, Ivan Bennet, Paul Nelson, Daryl Rodman, Dale Brown and Raymon Taylor.

Jamison, Mrs. John –

Mrs John Jamison of Champaign, Ill. died Monday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs Leonard Wainwright.  She was buried in Seymour, Iowa.  Her husband died September 1955.

 

The Jamisons and the Wainwrights formerly lived in Lenox, having owned and operated the hotel for several years.

Key, John Ormen -

John Ormen Key, son of A.S. and Mary Key, was born May 30, 1874, near Peoria, Illinois, passing from this life at the Gilreath Rest Home in Bedford, la., Thursday, Jan 3, 1957, at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 3 days.

 

Funeral services were Sunday at the Presbyterian church in

Sharpsburg. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

 

In 1878, he moved with his parents from Peoria, Illinois, to

Taylor County, Iowa.  He was married to Goldie Cook at Bedford, Iowa, July 3, 1894. To this union three children were born, Grace (Mrs G I Cree of Colorado Springs, Colo), Beulah (Mrs D H Cree, deceased), and Howard D of Lamoni, Iowa.

 

About 40 years ago the family moved from a farm in Taylor County, Iowa, to Sharpsburg, where Mr Key was active in community and business life, being mayor for eight years and operating a filling station and grain business.

 

As a member of the Blue Grove Christian Church, he maintained his religious interests throughout his entire life.  His daughter, Beulah, preceded him in death in 1946. Three brothers and three sisters passed on many years ago.

 

Remaining to remember him are his devoted wife, Goldie; one

daughter and her husband, Grace and Glen Cree; one son and his wife, Howard and Irene Key; 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; his step-mother, Sarah Key of Lenox, Iowa;

three brothers: Oscar, of Fiske, Sask, Canada: Lewis of Wichita,

Kansas; Lloyd of Blockton, la.; five sisters; Roxie Key of Glenwood,

la.; Hattie Lockett of Gravity; Eunice Eller, Lydia Reynolds, and Mary Terry all of Lenox, many nieces and nephews. Johnny will be missed by his family and a host of friends.

Kirkman, Minnie Myrtle Winslow -

Funeral services were held Monday at Bender Funeral home for Mrs Sam Kirkman, 76, who died Saturday morning in the Creston hospital.  The Rev. Burton Collier officiated at the services.  Burial was in Lenox Cemetery.

OBITUARY

Minnie Kirkman was born Minnie Myrtle Winslow, the daughter of Charles and Cora She spent her girlhood  in the Sharpsburg and Lenox communities, later teaching school near Sharpsburg for about five years.

 

On February 20, 1906, she was married to Sam Kirkman, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Kirkman of Sharpsburg.  Some time after their marriage they farmed for four years in North Dakota, moving back to the Sharpsburg vicinity in 1912.  They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in February of this year.  One son, Rex, and two grandchildren have preceded her in death.

 

Left to mourn her passing are four of their five children: Eunice, Mrs Guy Nicholson of St. Charles, Cara, Mrs Andrew O’Neal of Onawa, Beulah, Mrs. Ivan Gard of Pine River, Minn.,  Cecil of Corning, also 10 grandchildren, one brother, Joel Winslow of Sharpsburg, several cousins and a host of friends.

 

Death came at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston September 8, 1956 at the age of 76 years, one month.

Leahy, Margaret -

Mrs Margaret Leahy of Imogene, mother of Mrs Frank Sweeney, passed away at her home Thursday, Sept. 6. Funeral services were Saturday morning at St Patrick's church at Imogene.

 

Her granddaughters, Margaret Sweeney of Denver, Colo., and Catherine Sweeney of Omaha came to attend the services.

Manroe, Walter Rolla –

W. Rolla Manroe, 61, of Sweetwater, Tex. died Thursday evening at the hospital where he had been a cancer patient since April.  He was born in Texas and moved to Lenox with his parents about 1898.

 

He attended school here and was married to Wadie Seibert.  Their son Keith was born here.  The family moved in 1926 to Sweetwater.  Mr  Manroe was city mail carrier there for 25 years.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

 

Survivors: his widow, Wadie, one son, Major Keith of the USAF, 4 grandchildren, one brother, Judge M C Manroe of Sweetwater, one sister, Mrs Earl Hudson of Lenox, one niece Mrs Richard Barton of Des Moines.

 

Funeral services were Sunday at the Methodist Church at Sweetwater with burial at Austin, Tex.

 

Mr Manroe will be remembered as the one who built or assembled the first radio in Lenox.  He was a vocal soloist with the Lenox Orchestra and sang at KFNF Shenandoah in the early days of radio.  He was also a member of the Lenox band.

Manroe, Walter Rolla –

Walter Rolla Manore died in a hospital at Sweetwater, Tex. At 3:45 pm Sept. 20.  He had been in the hospital since April 4 and had been ill at his home, 407 E. New Mexico, for a month before entering the hospital for surgery.  He was 61.

 

Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at First Methodist Church in Sweetwater with Rev. C A Holcomb Jr., pastor, officiating.  Interment was in Austin Memorial Park, Monday.  The Masonic Lodge of Austin had charge of graveside rites.

 

Walter Rolla Manore was born in Manvel, Tex. Oct. 10, 1894.  His parents Mr and Mrs E P (Joe) Manroe moved to Lenox when he was five years old.  He attended school in Lenox.

 

Oct. 20, 1915, he married Miss Wadie Seibert in a ceremony at the farm home of her parents near Blackwell, Okla.  They lived in Iowa until 1926, when they moved to Springwater, Tex.  He joined the Texas Company dealership then operated by his brother and the late Guy Morris.

 

He following year he became associated with the Dodge Agency, Hendrix, Woldert Motor Co.  He also worked with the Toler Motor Company and the US Weather Bureau Station.

For 21 years before his death, Manroe was employed at the US Post Office.  Past and present post office employees and their families were seated at the funeral in a special reserved section.  Twenty-three nurses from the hospital also attended the funeral in a group.

 

Mr Manroe was a member of the First Methodist Church at Sweetwater and had been a choir member 20 years.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

 

Surviving are one son, Keith Manroe of Austin, Tex., one sister, Mrs. Earl Hudson of Lenox, one brother, M C Manroe of Sweetwater, four grandchildren, one niece Mrs  Richard Barton of Des Moines, several nieces and nephews by marriage.  His parents and one  little brother preceded him in death.

Maynes, Jean Marie Reed -

Mrs Joe Maynes died Friday, Dec 7, at the home of her sister in San Diego, California. She had been visiting there for a few weeks. She had not been well, but family and friends had not realized that her condition was serious.   The body was brought by plane to Kansas City Sunday and to Lenox by the Bender funeral coach.  Funeral services were at the United Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev James Eddy. Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Obituary

Jean Marie Maynes was born September 26, 1894, near Clearfield,

Iowa; and passed away on December 7, 195fi, while visiting at the home of her sister in San Diego, California at the age of 62 years, 2 months and 11 days.

 

Jean was the youngest daughter of William and Mary Reed. She lived most of her life In the Lenox vicinity.  On January 31, 1922 she was

united in marriage to Joe W Maynes of Macedonia at Red Oak, Iowa. To this union were born two sons, Harold and Joe Jr.

 

In the year 1926 she united with the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother,

Harold.

 

Those surviving besides her husband and sons, are a daughter-in-law, Gwen Maynes, and two sisters, Edna Fattig of Creston and Mrs Minnie Rood of San Diego, California; also two nieces, Lucille Nelly of Chicago, Illinois, and Mrs Faye Jean Lesher of Gardnervllle, Nevada.

A host of other relatives and friends mourn her passing.

Miller, Rose Schafroth -

Mrs Rose Miller, 83, died Thursday at 9:00 am. at her home  northwest of Lenox in the Mercer Center neighborhood.  Her husband preceded her in death. Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at the Mercer Center Church.

 

Mercer Center Community was saddened by the sudden death of Mrs. Rose Miller on Thursday morning Nov. 15, 1956.  Mrs. Miller, age 83 years, 6 months and 13 days was Grandma to most who knew her in this neighborhood.  She was a pioneer citizen of the locality, coming to Adams County from Ohio in 1877 at the age of four with her parents.  After living in Brooks for one year she moved to Mercer Center where she lived her life within walking distance of her pioneer home.

 

Rose Schafroth, daughter of Levi and Mary Riggenbach Schafroth was born May 6, 1873 near Hannibal in Monroe County, Ohio.  In September 1897 she united in married to John Miller, who preceded her in death on September 13, 1907.  Two daughters blessed this union, Mabel Gladys who passed to her rest on March 3, 1920 at the age of 21 and Mrs. Dorothy Higgins.

 

Other survivors are one son-in-law Harry Higgins, one granddaughter and her husband, Marjorie and Don Roberts of Lenox, five sisters, Mrs. Kate Miller of Corning, Elizabeth, Mrs. Otto Hanson of Prescott, Alta, Mrs. Wm. Stegenthaler of Akron, Ohio, Lillian, Mrs. Otto Thornton of Brownsville, Oregon, four brothers, Joe Schafroth of Lenox, Wm. and George Schafroth of Corning and Fred S. of San Juan, Texas.  Many nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends mourn her sudden passing.

 

Grandma Miller had been a member of the Mercer Center Methodist Church since early childhood and faithfully worked and gave of herself to the church until she became unable to continue.  She was a kind mother, a good friend and neighbor to all, and was highly respected by young and old alike.  Her happiest moments where when she was at work among her flowers and in her garden.  Many folks will remember her for her beautiful handwork, as she spent her shut in days crocheting.

 

Funeral services were held from the Mercer Center Church Nov. 18, 1956, conducted by Rev. H R Stoner, and Rev. Thomas W. Hicks.  Interment was in Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

 

Music was furnished by Gerald Roberts, Ester Burkhalter and Mrs. John Hettinger.  Flower bearers were Lucille Brokaw, Margaret Bissell, Florence Walter and Genevieve Rogers.

Poindexter, Rollin Erwin -

R. E. Poindexter, 65, died at the University hospital in Iowa City early Friday morning after an extended illness. He had worked for the Burlington railroad since 1913, serving as station agent at Lenox from 1929 until his retirement in 1950. He had been a member of the Lenox water board for a number of years. Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Burton Collier, Interment was in the Lenox cemetery.

Obituary

Rollin Erwin Poindexter, the son of Dr. Joseph Shelton Poindexter

and Savanah Mung Poindexter, was born July 12, 1901, at Woburn, Illinois. He was married to Ada Glee Cox, at Osceola, Iowa on April

21, 1916. To this union were born three children: Kathleen (Mrs

D. P. Strain), of Modale, Iowa, Joseph Shelton, who died in in infancy, and Rod of Chariton.

 

In 1913 he came to Iowa from his boyhood home in Illinois.  He was employed as a telegraph operator at Hastings by the Burlington Railroad.  In 1929 he came to Lenox as a Station Agent where he served until his retirement in 1950.

 

During the last two years he had been in ill health, spending the  last 9 weeks in University Hospital in Iowa City.

 

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.  Baptized on April 26, 1956,

he was later received as a member of the Methodist church.

 

Death came at 2:20 a.m. on Friday, Dec 14, 1956 at University

Hospitals in Iowa City, at the age of 65 years, five months and two days

Smith, Harry Cebren –

Harry Cebren Smith, son of Francis and Catherine Smith was born July 8, 1888 in Rockport, Missouri and passed away Oct. 24, 1956 at the Lenox Rest Home.

 

He had made his home with his brother, Al, for the past several years until being moved to the rest home two years ago.

 

He leaves to mourn his passing one daughter, Mrs L A Benson, one granddaughter, Connie Benson, one son, Francis Earl Smith, all of North Hollywood, Calif., one brother A. F Smith of Lenox and  a host of relatives and friends.

 

Services were Wednesday, Oct. 17, 1956 at the Bender Funeral Home conducted by Father Adam Reisz.  Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery.

Stoner, Glenn Clayton –

Glenn Clayton Stoner, 61, died Monday at 9 am at his home 4¼ miles southwest of Lenox.

 

Funeral services were Wednesday at 2 pm at the Bender Funeral Home, the Rev Burton Collier officiating.  Military services were conducted by the Parkinson Post No. 250 of the American Legion.

 

Mr. Stoner was a veteran of World War I.  Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

OBITUARY

Glenn Clayton, the son of Lula Jenks and Rueben Stoner was born Sept. 11, 1895 near Lenox.

 

He attended Beachdale School and lived his entire life at the farm home in Grove Township where he was born.  Since August 1952, he has spent many weeks in the hospitals, returning only recently from a five week stay at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

 

He served in the US Army in 1918.  His father, Reuben preceded him in death in 1920.  He leaves to mourn his loss, his mother and only sister, Grace, as well as many relative and a host of friends.

 

Death came at 10:30 am on Monday, Nov 12, 1956 at his home at the age of 61 years, one month an 28 days.

Sweeney, Mae –

Mae Sweeney of Council Bluffs, veteran pharmacist, died Tuesday at an Omaha Hospital after a brief illness A native of Imogene, she had been a pharmacist in Council Bluffs for 27 years. She was a graduate of the State University of Pharmacy, also a member of the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association.

 

Survivors include two brothers, Frank B of Conway and Louis T of Denver, Colo.

Wilson, Marnie –

Mrs. Marnie Wilson, 69, died Saturday morning at the hospital in Red Oak.  Her husband, Bert, lived in Lenox one year preceding their marriage after which they lived in Shenandoah 35 years.  They have lived in Red Oak since then.

 

Survivors:  her husband, Bert, a brother, Walter Jordan of Fontana, Calif, 3 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Frank McHarry, Mrs. Nelle Butler and Mrs. Mable Rupe, all of Lenox and a number of nieces and nephews. 

 

Funeral services were at the Funeral Home in Shenandoah Monday.  Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.

Winslow, Ora -

Mrs Orin Winslow, 59, of Gravity died in Municipal hospital at Clarinda about 6 p m Saturday, Nov 17 after a few hours illness.

Funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Wilbur G Travis of the Bedford Christian Church. Burial was in Conway cemetery.

 

Mrs Winslow is survived by her husband, two daughters and a son; Mrs Maida Norgate of Seattle, Wash, Mrs Zelah Kahn of San Diego, Calif, Max Winslow of Lincoln, Nebr. There are also ten grandchildren.

Wurster, John Jacob –

Jack J. Wurster, 59, farmer living east of Lenox suffered a heart attack Thursday morning and died at 8:30 a.m.  The funeral was at Bender Funeral Home Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. James Eddy.  Burial was in Lenox Cemetery.

 

John Jacob Wurster, oldest son of William and Freida Wurster, was born near Lenox, Sept. 26, 1897 and passed away at his home east of Lenox, Oct. 11, 1956 at the age of 59 years and 15 days.

 

He was united in marriage to Hilda Eberle of Lenox Jan. 4, 1923.  They lived on a farm near Sharpsburg for two years and then moved to their farm east of Lenox.  He was a kind and generous husband and father.  He was a member of the United Presbyterian church of Lenox.

 

He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife, his two daughters, Darlene Waggoner and Donna Wurster of Des Moines, his son-in-law Lewis Waggoner and a host of friends.

 

Casket bearers at the funeral were Chas. Schaffer, Elmer Schaffer, Karl Eberle, Kenneth Eberle, Floyd Eberle and Elmer Eberle.
