Newton, Monroe Amos -
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon for Monroe Amos Newton, 86, at the Crew Funeral Home with Rev. H. Ball in charge of the service.
Monroe was born on a farm near Maloy, July 29, 1871. He was the son of Mr and Mrs John Newton and a lifetime resident of Ringgold and Taylor County. As a youth he taught school several years in Ringgold County and later served 25 years on the school board. Aided by brother Jim, he operated family homestead on Platte River until retirement in 1932.
In Oct. 1943 he was married to Cora Peitzmeyer of Clearfield who preceded him in death. Following a series of strokes starting in 1939, he has been confined to his home where he has been cared for by his step daughter, Mrs Nellie Speer. Besides Mrs Speer, he is
survived by son and daughter, James of Cedar Rapids and Elizabeth
Payne of Storm Lake by his marriage to Julia Tharp in 1915. He
also leaves a grandchild, Alan Payne. Burial in Rose Hill cemetery in Blockton.

Owens, Ernest Miller -
Miller Owens, 71, a farmer living southeast of Clearfield, died at the Creston hospital Sunday. He had entered the hospital with a heart ailment Saturday. Funeral services were Jan 23 at the Clearfield Methodist church with burial in the Clearfield cemetery. Surviving
are his widow, Mary; two sons, Lester of Rochelle, Ill., and Walter of Clearfield; a daughter, Mrs Gladys Levi of Clearfield; two brothers, Clyde and Bert Owens, both of Clearfield.

Obituary
Funeral services for Ernest Miller Owens, 79, were held at the Methodist church in Clearfield Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev H Ball officiating. Son of Mr and Mrs John Owens, Ernest was born on a farm near Morning Sun, la., Oct 20,1877 and passed away at Greater Community Hospital in Creston on Sunday, Jan. 20.
He was united in marriage to Carrie Mullin Jan 20, 1901 She
preceded him in death on Oct 6, 1945. To this union were born
1 daughter, Gladys Levi, and sons, Lester of Rochelle Ill. and Walter of Clearfield. In 1917 they moved to Clearfield where he spent the rest of his life.
He was married to Mary Beatty on Oct 12, 1952. He was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors include his wife and 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Also 2 sisters. Mrs Jennie Campbell and Mrs Nellie Moyers of Wapello and 3 brothers, Bert and Clyde of Clearfield and Earl of Mt Union. Interment in the Clearfield cemetery, conducted by Crew Funeral Service.

Phelan, Edward Joseph -
Ed Phelan 84, died Thursday at 4:15 P m, at his home in Sharpsburg after an extended illness. He was a retired livestock buyer.
Funeral services were Monday at 9:30 a m at the St Patrick's
Church in Lenox with the Rev Father Adam Reisz officiating.
Rosary was Sunday evening at 7:30 at the Bender Funeral Home. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
Obituary
Edward Joseph Phelan, 84, died at his home in Sharpsburg, Jan 17, 1957. The son of Patrick and Elizabeth Phelan, he was born in Kankakee, Illinois, and came with his parents to Iowa at the age of 5.
They located on a farm near Conway.
Later they moved into Conway where he grew to manhood and was engaged in the livestock business with his father. In 1900 he moved to Sharpsburg, and continued in the business until his health failed.
In 1905 he was united in marriage to Belle Boyden and to this union four children were born: Mrs Marguerite Barlow, Lenox; Mrs Gerald
Boydston, Sharpsburg; and two sons, Francis and Patrick who
preceded him in death in 1932.
Besides his wife and two daughters he leaves to mourn his death one brother and three sisters: William Phelan, Lincoln, Nebr.; Mrs Mayme Ford, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs Irene Donaldson, San Francisco, Calif.; and Mrs Homer Stewart, Phillips, Nebr., five
grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

Lowell Preston, 21, died Wednesday afternoon at his home. The body is at Bender Funeral home. Arrangements for services had not been made as we go to press.

Preston, Lowell Ray –
Lowell Ray Preston, youngest son of Harry Preston and Alice Haering Preston, was born Sept 28, 1935 at the family home near Lenox. He completed his elementary education at Mercer No. 8, where his father had attended before him.
Lowell confessed Christ and was baptized in the Christian faith, Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948 and was a faithful attendant of his church. Due to his father's illness in 1951, he assumed, at the age of 16, full responsibility for the care of their livestock and the operation of the farm. For the following two and one-half years
Lowell carried this adult load and kept up his studies at the
Lenox High School.
Through his early years and young manhood he had a great
interest in 4-H work and took an active part in the local club
and county organization. He took great pride and pleasure
in the care and showing of his projects and was never happier than when using his inventive mind and gifted hands.
In February of 1954, he was taken suddenly ill and underwent
major surgery. Making rapid recovery, he was able to graduate in May with his class and to continue his 4-H work. In 1955 he was chosen outstanding 4-H boy of Adams county.
Lowell was quiet and reserved facing life as it unfolded before him, accepting the will of God without question. His family and friends prayed fervently and ceaselessly that medical science would find the way in time for him, but it was not to be. Lowell passed away in his sleep about 4 p.m. February 27, 1957, at the age of 21 years, 5 months.
Besides his parents, he leaves his deeply loved older brothers and their wives, Norman and Jeanne of Kansas City, and Carroll and Pat of Webster Groves, Mo.; two adoring nieces, Kathy and Christi
Preston; six favored nephews, Steven, Jon, Mark, Michael, Philip and Timothy Preston and many other relatives and friends.
Reverend E F Hagee of St Joseph, Mo., conducted the funeral services Saturday, Mar 2, 1957, at the Christian church in Lenox with burial at Fairview cemetery. Roland Buxton was soloist, with Mrs Floyd Boltinghouse at the organ. Robert Lockhart, Larry Lucas, Russell
Gordon, Ray Nixon, Jasper Ambrose and Mervin Shawler were pall bearers.
Fifteen of Lowell's young friends formed an aisle with the profuse floral offerings as the cortege left the church and again at the cemetery, each one placing their floral tribute at the grave. They were Carole Eckels, Barbara Olson, Mary Alice Westlake, Eileen
Walter, Nancy Westlake, Carolyn Walter, Bonnie Shrader, Billie Long, Marvin Walter, Larry Swartz, Garland Walter, Keith Lindell, Larry Schrader, Galen Vogel and Duane Eigenheer.

Richard, Arlo E. –
Arlo E. Richard, 84, died Friday Mar 1 at the Lenox Rest Home after a long illness. He had been in hospitals at Creston and Des Moines before coming to the Rest Home.
Funeral services were Monday, Mar 4 at the Bender Funeral Home, the Rev. James Eddy officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.
Mr. Richard farmed north of Lenox but moved to town more than 50 years ago. He was a stockman, horse buyer and feed salesman. The family home was on East Temple Avenue.
Mrs Richard, the former Maude Patton died Mar 28, 1953.
Surviving are one son, Wm. Gail Richard of Pittsburg, Pa., a daughter Mrs. John McCarroll of Wickenburg, Ariz., a sister, Mrs Ollie Jones of Des Moines, two grandchildren, Mrs. Geo Plavetich and Don Richard of Pittsburg, and a great granddaughter Janet Lynn Plavetich.
Mr Richard was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
Relatives from a distance who came for the funeral were his son and wife of Pittsburgh Pa., his daughter, Mrs McCarroll from Arizona: his sister Mrs Jones from Des Moines also Mr and Mrs Lorin Van Buskirk of Sioux City, and friends from Des Moines, Omaha and Creston.

Shafer, Harriet Reynolds Keller -
Mrs Harriet Shafer, 83, died at the Greater Community hospital
in Creston Wednesday morning. She had been at the Oswald Nursing Home in Creston since July. Her husband, Samuel, preceded her in death.
Survivors include: 4 daughters, Mrs Roy Camden, of Lenox; Mrs Elvis Neely, of Creston, Mrs M E Cummings and Mrs F H Baxter, both of Omaha, 2 sons, Orville Shafer, of Lenox, J H Shafer, of Des Moines; 16
grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Funeral services
will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with the Rev Burton C Collier officiating. Burial in Bethel cemetery at Diagonal.

Shafer, Harriet Reynolds Keller -
Harriet M Shafer, the daughter of G B and Armentia Reynolds,
was born July 28, 1873 near Diagonal.
She was united in marriage to John Keller, who preceded her in death. To this union was born one son, Chester, now of Des Moines.
Later in life she was married to Samuel L Shafer, who preceded
her in death in 1944. Two sons and four daughters were born into this home. All of them remain to mourn her passing. They are Harold (J H) of Des Monies; Orval of Lenox: Mrs Opal Baxter, of Omaha.
Nebraska; Myrtle (Mrs Melvin Cummings) of Omaha, Nebr.; Marie (Mrs Elvis Neely) of Creston; Florence (Mrs Roy Camden) of Lenox. Also surviving are her 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and many friends. She herself was the last of a family of sixteen children.
Mrs Shafer spent most of her life on farms near Diagonal, moving to Lenox about 20 years ago. She was a member of the Diagonal Methodist Church.
Death came at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston at 1:00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb 27 at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 30 days.
Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at the Bender Funeral Home, the Rev B C Collier, officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery near Diagonal.

Shimer, Minnie Knott Boyer -
Mrs Minnie Shimer, 79, died Friday at 6 a.m. at her home in
Sharpsburg. Her husband preceded her in death. Survivors
include: 2 daughters, Mrs Mary Caven, Mrs Effie Shimer, both
of Sharpsburg; 2 grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday
afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg. Burial
was in the Lenox cemetery.
Obituary
Minnie Knott, daughter of John and Clarinda Knott, was born near Peoria, Illinois, Oct 3, 1877. She passed from this life Feb 8, 1957, after a long illness.
She moved from Illinois, by a covered wagon, at the age of two years, to Taylor County, Iowa. She lived the rest of her life in Taylor County, with the exception of four years in Excelsior Springs, Mo.
Minnie was united in marriage to Otis Boyer, Feb 12, 1896.
To this union two daughter were born, Mary and Effie. Mr Boyer passed away August 17, 1926. She was then married to John Shimer, May 24, 1930, who passed away July 6,1942.
Minnie became a member of the Christian Church at Blue Grove at the age of 17. She also attended the Christian Church at Lenox, and later became a member of the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg.
Preceding her in death were her mother and father; four brothers and two sisters.
She leaves to mourn her passing her two daughters and their husbands. Mary and Arthur Caven of Conway; Effie and Chester Shimer of Sharpsburg; a granddaughter and husband, Marion and Ben Small of Canoga Park, Calif.; a granddaughter, Maxine Sage and a
great-granddaughter, Nioma Sage of Conway; one sister, Anna Boyden of Sharpsburg; a step-daughter and husband, Alma and Pedley Funcett, their two children and families of Shenandoah; and a host of relatives and friends.

Wherry, John Lawrence -
John Lawrence Wherry, the youngest child of J T Wherry and Hannah Bratton, was born in Linden, Iowa, Jan 18, 1874. He passed away at his home in Los Angeles, Calif., Feb 5, 1957, after a short illness. Funeral services were held Feb 9 at the beautiful Wilshire Christian church, where he has been a faithful member and officer for thirty years, his pastor, Rev Hoke Dickinson, officiating.
Interment was in the beautiful Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
His parents were one of the pioneer families of Lenox moving from Cedar county to Taylor county when John was an infant in 1875. He grew to manhood in the old Wherry home just down the lane west of Murchey's Hill, at that time one of the finest residences in Taylor
county. He attended the grades and high school at Lenox
He was married to Sadie Lemon Sept 20, 1900 and lived in the Wherry home for 2 or 3 years with his parents. He lived later
in Missouri, then Kansas, and thirty years ago to Los Angeles.
John and Sadie celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary
Sept 26, 1956 at their home, 2493 Lanterman Terrace, Los
Angeles 39.
Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by three sons
and two daughters: Frank of San Diego, Howard of San Fransisco Elwyn, Helen Hines and Adelaide Joseph of Los Angeles, and nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including Jay Hughes of Lenox, Vaughn Hughes of Glendale Calif., a grand niece, Edna Haas
Tourigney of Inglewood, Calif., a host of friends and neighbors
mourn his loss and friendship.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, one son, Paul Roger and two daughters, Lillian Ann and Barbara. Among those who also mourn his passing are 3 brothers, Lester and Paul of Clearfield and Phillip of Washington and a sister, Lois Whitmore of Clearfield. Burial was in
the Clearfield cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge at the Crew Funeral Home.

Mrs Porter Wilt, 88 died at the Rosary hospital in Corning Friday morning. She had been in the hospital four weeks and in failing health for some time.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Clearfield
Sunday afternoon The pastor, the Rev Howard H Ball officiated Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
Mrs Wilt was born at Mendota, Ill., the daughter of Mr and Mrs J M Carlton. The family moved to this vicinity when she was a small child and she had lived here since.
Feb 11, 1886 she was married to Porter Wilt. They observed their 71st anniversary this year. They lived on a farm in the Calvary neighborhood all their married life.
Surviving are her husband; a son, J H Wilt of Carlisle; and three grandchildren, Jim, Jayne and Margaret.

Wilt, Nettie Leota Carlton -
Nettie Leota Carlton, daughter of Sarah and J W Carlton, was born in Mendota, Ill., May 29, 1868.
She was united in marriage to Samuel Porter Wilt Feb 11, 1886. To this union was born one son James Harold Wilt of Carlisle.
Her entire married life of 71 years was spent on a farm between
Lenox and Clearfield with the exception of 7 years when she and her husband took care of his aged mother in Lenox. Early in life she became a member of the Methodist church. She was a faithful
worker in the Calvary church many years.
Death came at the hospital in Corning Friday, Mar 8,1957. She is survived by her husband, her son and daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, James F Wilt, Jaynane Zima and Martha Wilt of Carlisle and three great grandchildren James Porter and Julia Wilt
and Elizabeth Zima. Also one brother of Des Moines and several
nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb 10, at the Clearfield
Methodist Church, the Rev Howard F Ball officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Mrs Carrie Zollars, 67, died at the Ringgold hospital, Mt Ayr, Saturday morning. She had lived on a farm south of Clearfield for 25 years. She had been in ill health for some time. Funeral services and
burial were held at Quincy Ill Tuesday. Surviving are her husband
William: a son, Gerald, 3 sisters and 2 brothers at Quincy.

Zollars, Carrie Lindsey -
Funeral services were held for Mrs Carrie Zollar, 67, Monday
afternoon at the Crew Funeral Home with Rev Howard Ball officiating. She was a long time resident of Clearfield.
Born near Quincy, Ill. on Feb. 19, 1889, Carrie was the daughter of Mr and Mrs David Lindsey. On Oct. 13, 1913 she was united in marriage to William Zollar. In 1931 they moved to a farm near Logan where they lived for 7 years. Then they moved to this community where she lived until her death.
Mrs Zollar passed away at the Ringgold County Hospital where she had been receiving treatment. She leaves to mourn her husband, 1 son, Gerald, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, and 7 nieces, all of Quincy, Ill.
