Ackerman, Lula -

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Crew Funeral home for Mrs Lulu Ackerman, 88. Rev Howard Ball conducted the rites. Mrs Ackerman, a longtime resident of Clearfield community passed away at the Creston hospital in Creston Monday. She is survived by a daughter, Jennie Ackerman and a brother, Peter, in South Dakota. Interment was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Bledsoe, Annetta –

Mrs. Annetta Bledsoe, 50, died Friday at 3:30 pm at the home of her cousin, Dr. E R Pennebaker and wife of Lenox.  She and her husband, Walter had been visiting in the Pennebaker home.  She had suffered a heart attack.  Her home was in Bellwood, Ill.  The Bender Funeral Home took the body to Peoria, Ill. Saturday afternoon.

 

Survivors:  her husband Walter and 6 children.

Christianson, John F. -

John F Christianson, 87, of Sharpsburg died Tuesday night at Moline, Ill., where he was visiting. He was a retired farmer. 

 

Funeral services were Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg with the Rev Donald Gibson officiating. Burial was in the Conway cemetery.

 

Survivors: 3 daughters, Mrs George Cade, of Sharpsburg, Mrs Adena Kinser, of Davenport, Mrs Warren Peterson, of Moline, Illinois

and a number of grandchildren.

 

John F Christiansen, aged 87 years died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Warren Peterson in Moline, Illinois, Jan 29, l957.

 

He was born in Smoland, Sweden, Sept 1, 1869, and came to the United States in 1887.  The first year of his American life was spent in Elk County, Pennsylvania, after which he came to Bedford, la. With the exception of a few visits to his homeland he lived the rest of his life in Taylor County.

 

On March 17. 1896 he was united in marriage to Eda Amanda

Blad with whom he established the home west of Sharpsburg. They were the parents of 4 children: a son Carl who died in infancy, and three daughters, Edith Cade of Conway, Adena Kinser of Davenport,

and Ruth Peterson of. Moline.

 

Mr Christiansen was a Lutheran by faith, having been confirmed

at the age of 12 in the Markarud Church at Hult, Sweden. He had the privilege of attending this church when he made his last visit to Sweden in the fall of 1952.

 

Besides his daughters he leaves to mourn an older brother, Julius; six grandchildren, John Cade, George Cade, Samuel Kinser, David Kinser, Adena Peterson, Edith Peterson and a number of other relatives and friends.

Mrs Anna Coy, 79 who had been ill for some time passed away at her home here Monday morning. She leaves to mourn her passing, one daughter Mrs Fern Beemer of Gravity two sons, Earl of Bedford,

Nolan of Buffalo, Wyo., four brothers, Dick Savage of McCleod Mo., Garfield Savage of Des Moines, Art and Chet Savage of Riverside, Calif., one sister, Mrs Nellie Jacoby of Houston, Tex., several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Crew, Ralph -

Ralph Crew, 70, of Clearfield died at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Greater Community hospital in Creston.  Funeral services were held

Thursday in the Clearfield high school auditorium with Rev Ronald Graham officiating and burial in the Clearfield cemetery.

 

Active in civic affairs, he had been a member of the school board for many years, was a member of the Lions club, the Christian church and the Masonic lodge. He owned and operated a funeral home

and furniture store in Clearfield since 1912.

 

Surviving are his wife, Marie; one son, Dr Morton Crew of Decatur, Ill.; two brothers, Ivan of Diagonal and Fred in Oregon, and a sister, Bessie in Oregon.

Dowell, Fred W. -

Fred W Dowell, 70,  a longtime resident of the Clearfield community, died at his home in Clearfield at 11 a.m. Friday. He had operated a restaurant in Clearfield for many years and later was in the upholstering business before retiring several years ago.

 

Funeral services were at the Crew funeral home in Clearfield Sunday, Rev Kenneth Dailey officiating. Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

 

Mr Dowell is survived by his widow, Minnie; a daughter, Mrs Louise Marrow of Seymour, two sons Therrin of Des Moines and Gordon of Adel, six grandchildren, three brothers, Clifford and Emmett of Henningsford, Nebr., and Frank in Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Mr and Mrs Dowell had observed their golden wedding anniversary Christmas day.

Mrs Mary Duncan, 81, passed away Monday a.m. after being in poor health for several months. She leaves one son, Carl, farmer northeast of Gravity, 3 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren, 2 sisters,

Clyde Franklin, 74, died at the Armstrong Nursing home in Bedford Friday morning, March 8.

 

Funeral services were Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bender Funeral Home with the Rev. James Eddy of the Lenox United Presbyterian church in charge. Burial was in the Lenox Cemetery.  One son in Colorado survives.

Goodwin, Herbert R. -

Herbert R Goodwin, 47, a brother-in-law of Mrs O D Tyler, died early Monday morning in a Waterloo hospital. His sudden death was attributed to perforated stomach ulcers. Mr and Mrs Tyler left Monday morning to be with the family.

 

Funeral services were to be today, Thursday, at the Methodist church in Waterloo, with burial there.

 

Mr Goodwin was formerly a music instructor at Creston and

at Waterloo, but had later associated with a music store. He

is survived by his widow, the former Reva Lamb, a son Peter,

11, and a sister in Idaho. Mrs Goodwin's mother, Mrs Mayme Lamb, is now in Moultrie, Ga. She and the sister there would be unable to attend the funeral relatives said.

Herbst, Cora Isabel Preston -

Mrs Carl Herbst, 68, died Wednesday evening at her home after

an extended illness. Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at the Lenox Methodist church, the Rev Burton Collier officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Obituary

Mrs Carl Herbst was born Cora Isabel Preston on October 1, 1888 in Adams County, Iowa.

 

The daughter of Charles G Preston and Agnes Coulter Preston, she has lived her entire life in the Lenox vicinity.

 

On December 18, 1912, she was united in marriage to Carl E Herbst. They were engaged in farming until moving to Lenox in 1943.

 

Preceding her in death were her mother and father, and an infant son, Ray Reldon.

 

Those left to mourn her passing are her husband, Carl, their daughter and son-in-law, Leona and Leslie Ritchey, and two granddaughters of Parkdale, Oregon, Others include two sisters and three brothers Edith (Mrs Chester Boyer), Bertha (Mrs Earl Gordon, Will Preston and Harry Preston, all of Lenox and George Preston of

Creston.

 

Mrs Herbst was a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox, having been baptized and confirmed at the age of 15.

 

Death came at her home at Lenox at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday,

January 30, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 30 days.

Hill, Otto J. -

Otto J Hill, son of John and Lucy Hill was born Feb 1, 1877 near Galesburg, Ill., and died at his home in Corning on Feb 22, 1957, at the age of 80 years and 21 days.

 

In 1831 he moved with his parents to a farm near Lenox. In 1943 he moved to Corning where he spent the remainder of his life.

 

On March 4, 1902, he was married to Mamie Copeland and to this union were born two sons, Roy, of Creston and Walter of Prescott. A foster son, Leo DeyErmand of Grand Island came into the home at the age of 12.

 

Mr Hill was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, two sons and their

wives, a foster son and wife, three grandchildren, Marjorie Hill of Chicago, Carolyn and Jack Hill of Prescott: three sisters, Mrs Joe Schafroth, Mrs Claude Swartz and Mrs Wesley Miller and many other relatives and friends. He acknowledged his savior in June, 1925.

 

Funeral services were Sunday, Feb 24, at the Christian Church in Corning, conducted by Rev Walter Purdy. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Jones, Kate Rutledge -

Funeral services were held Monday at the Conway Methodist church for Kate Rutledge Jones, 96, who died Jan 3 in Murtaugh, Idaho. Services were conducted by Rev Howard DeVore and burial was in Conway cemetery.

 

Mrs Jones had lived in this vicinity until 1951 when she went to Idaho to live with a daughter. She had recently been in the hospital with a broken hip.

Obituary

Kate Rutledge Jones, daughter of Louisa Ann and William Rutledge, was born Sept 22, 1860 in Perry County, Ohio, and passed away on Jan 3, 1957, in Murtaugh, Idaho. She moved in a covered wagon at the age of 4 to Taylor County, Iowa where she lived until 1951. In that year, she went to Murtaugh, Idaho, to live with a daughter,

Dessie F Lindau.

 

April 8, 1883, Kate Rutledge was married to Cresap Singleton Jones and to this union six children were born: Dessie F Lindau, Murtaugh, Idaho, L Ruth Bowersox, Fayette, Iowa, Wilma N Russell, St Louis, Mo., and John Jones, Quincy, Wash. M Clare Hegwood and Donald W

Jones preceded her in death.  Her husband died in 1937.

 

Mrs Jones leaves to mourn her, besides her children, 12

grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 brothers: A E

Rutledge of Sharpsburg, and T T Rutledge of Twin Falls, Idaho.

In early life she became a member of the Methodist church and was faithful to her vows through a long life.

Mathias, Charles R. -

Charles Mathias, a former resident of the Mercer Center

community northwest of town, died Feb 25 at Portland, Ore.

The body is being sent to Lenox and was to arrive this morning. Funeral services will be at the Bender Funeral home today, Thursday, at 2 o'clock, the Rev B C Collier officiating. Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

 

Mr Mathias is an uncle of Mrs Andrew Stoaks. She estimated

his age at 80 years. The body is accompanied by a son, J R Mathias.

 

Surviving are the widow, the former Lillie Mercer, who also grew up in Adams county, and four children. The family moved to Oregon about 40 years ago.

Mathais, Charles R. -

Charles R Mathias, the son of Thomas J and Jane Brown Mathias, was born on May 17, 1874 in Washington County, la.

 

He lived with his parents there until they moved to the Mercer Center Community, where he was married in 1901 to Lillian Nora Mercer.

 

A member of the Mercer Center Methodist Church before leaving the community nearly 40 years ago, he had served for many years as a

church school superintendent and teacher, and on the church board. He was a member of the Methodist church at lola, Kansas at the time of his death.

 

Since leaving the community he and his family have lived at Baldwin, Kansas and at Manhattan and lola, Kansas in Colorado, and finally at Ranier and Portland, Oregon,

 

His mother and father and two sisters, Eva Mercer and Lizzie Mathias, preceded him in death. Left to mourn his passing are his wife and their four children: a daughter, Mrs Charlotte Nelson of Portland, Oregon, three sons, Murlyn and Roland, of Topeka, Kansas;

and Thurman, of Los Angeles, California, as well as two grandchildren.

 

Death came on Monday, Feb 25 at Portland, Oregon at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 8 days. Funeral services were Mar 9 at Bender Funeral home Burton C Collier officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery.

Mercer, Carl -

Carl Mercer of Corning died Saturday night at the home of a daughter in Mt Carroll, Ill. Funeral services are being held

Thursday, Feb 21 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Corning

with burial in the Lenox cemetery. Survivors include his widow, the former Flora Hewitt.

 

Mr Mercer grew up on a farm northwest of Lenox, later moving to Corning, and served as Auditor of Adams county. He is an uncle of Mrs Andrew Stoaks and has several cousins in this vicinity.

Newton, Monroe Amos -

Monroe Newton, 85, a lifelong resident of Ringgold and Taylor Counties, died at 11:30 p.m. Friday at the Armstrong nursing home in Bedford.

 

Funeral services were at the Crew funeral home in Clearfield,

Jan 14. Rev Howard Ball, pastor of the Clearfield Methodist church, officiated. Burial was in the Blockton cemetery.

 

Mr Newton is survived by a daughter, Mrs Elizabeth Payne

of Storm Lake; a son, James Newton of Marion; and a stepdaughter,

Mrs Nellie Speer of Clearfield. His wife preceded him in death.

 

He had retired some years ago and had lived in Clearfield for the past 15 years.

Newton, Monroe Amos -

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon for Monroe Amos Newton, 86, at the Crew Funeral Home with Rev. H. Ball in charge of the service.

 

Monroe was born on a farm near Maloy, July 29, 1871.  He was the son of Mr and Mrs John Newton and a lifetime resident of Ringgold and Taylor County.  As a youth he taught school several years in Ringgold County and later served 25 years on the school board.  Aided by brother Jim, he operated family homestead on Platte River until retirement in 1932.

 

In Oct. 1943 he was married to Cora Peitzmeyer of Clearfield who preceded him in death.  Following a series of strokes starting in 1939, he has been confined to his home where he has been cared for by his step daughter, Mrs Nellie Speer. Besides Mrs Speer, he is

survived by son and daughter, James of Cedar Rapids and Elizabeth

Payne of Storm Lake by his marriage to Julia Tharp in 1915.  He

also leaves a grandchild, Alan Payne. Burial in Rose Hill cemetery in Blockton.

Owens, Ernest Miller -

Miller Owens, 71, a farmer living southeast of Clearfield, died at the Creston hospital Sunday. He had entered the hospital with a heart ailment Saturday. Funeral services were Jan 23 at the Clearfield Methodist church with burial in the Clearfield cemetery. Surviving

are his widow, Mary; two sons, Lester of Rochelle, Ill., and Walter of Clearfield; a daughter, Mrs Gladys Levi of Clearfield; two brothers, Clyde and Bert Owens, both of Clearfield.

Obituary

Funeral services for Ernest Miller Owens, 79, were held at the Methodist church in Clearfield Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev H Ball officiating. Son of Mr and Mrs John Owens, Ernest was born on a farm near Morning Sun, la., Oct 20,1877 and passed away at Greater Community Hospital in Creston on Sunday, Jan. 20.

 

He was united in marriage to Carrie Mullin Jan 20, 1901 She

preceded him in death on Oct 6, 1945. To this union were born

1 daughter, Gladys Levi, and sons, Lester of Rochelle Ill. and Walter of Clearfield. In 1917 they moved to Clearfield where he spent the rest of his life.

 

He was married to Mary Beatty on Oct 12, 1952. He was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors include his wife and 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.  Also 2 sisters. Mrs Jennie Campbell and Mrs Nellie Moyers of Wapello and 3 brothers, Bert and Clyde of Clearfield and Earl of Mt Union.  Interment in the Clearfield cemetery, conducted by Crew Funeral Service.

Phelan, Edward Joseph -

Ed Phelan 84, died Thursday at 4:15 P m, at his home in Sharpsburg after an extended illness. He was a retired livestock buyer.

 

Funeral services were Monday at 9:30 a m  at the St Patrick's

Church in Lenox with the Rev Father Adam Reisz officiating.

Rosary was Sunday evening at 7:30 at the Bender Funeral Home. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Obituary

Edward Joseph Phelan, 84, died at his home in Sharpsburg, Jan 17, 1957. The son of Patrick and Elizabeth Phelan, he was born in Kankakee, Illinois, and came with his parents to Iowa at the age of 5.

They located on a farm near Conway.

 

Later they moved into Conway where he grew to manhood and was engaged in the livestock business with his father. In 1900 he moved to Sharpsburg, and continued in the business until his health failed.

 

In 1905 he was united in marriage to Belle Boyden and to this union four children were born: Mrs Marguerite Barlow, Lenox; Mrs Gerald

Boydston, Sharpsburg; and two sons, Francis and Patrick who

preceded him in death in 1932.

 

Besides his wife and two daughters he leaves to mourn his death one brother and three sisters: William Phelan, Lincoln, Nebr.; Mrs Mayme Ford, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs Irene Donaldson, San Francisco, Calif.; and Mrs Homer Stewart, Phillips, Nebr., five

grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

Preston, Lowell Ray –

Lowell Preston, 21, died Wednesday afternoon at his home. The body is at Bender Funeral home. Arrangements for services had not been made as we go to press.

 

Surviving are his parents, Mr and Mrs Harry Preston .and two brothers, Norman of Liberty Mo., and Carroll of Webster Groves. Mo.

Preston, Lowell Ray –

Lowell Ray Preston, youngest son of Harry Preston and Alice Haering Preston, was born Sept 28, 1935 at the family home near Lenox. He completed his elementary education at Mercer No. 8, where his father had attended before him.

 

Lowell confessed Christ and was baptized in the Christian faith, Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948 and was a faithful attendant of his church. Due to his father's illness in 1951, he assumed, at the age of 16, full responsibility for the care of their livestock and the operation of the farm. For the following two and one-half years

Lowell carried this adult load and kept up his studies at the

Lenox High School.

 

Through his early years and young manhood he had a great

interest in 4-H work and took an active part in the local club

and county organization. He took great pride and pleasure

in the care and showing of his projects and was never happier than when using his inventive mind and gifted hands.

 

In February of 1954, he was taken suddenly ill and underwent

major surgery. Making rapid recovery, he was able to graduate in May with his class and to continue his 4-H work.  In 1955 he was chosen outstanding 4-H boy of Adams county.

 

Lowell was quiet and reserved facing life as it unfolded before him, accepting the will of God without question. His family and friends prayed fervently and ceaselessly that medical science would find the way in time for him, but it was not to be. Lowell passed away in his sleep about 4 p.m. February 27, 1957, at the age of 21 years, 5 months.

 

Besides his parents, he leaves his deeply loved older brothers and their wives, Norman and Jeanne of Kansas City, and Carroll and Pat of Webster Groves, Mo.; two adoring nieces, Kathy and Christi

Preston; six favored nephews, Steven, Jon, Mark, Michael, Philip and Timothy Preston and many other relatives and friends.

 

Reverend E F Hagee of St Joseph, Mo., conducted the funeral services Saturday, Mar 2, 1957, at the Christian church in Lenox with burial at Fairview cemetery. Roland Buxton was soloist, with Mrs Floyd Boltinghouse at the organ. Robert Lockhart, Larry Lucas, Russell

Gordon, Ray Nixon, Jasper Ambrose and Mervin Shawler were pall bearers.

 

Fifteen of Lowell's young friends formed an aisle with the profuse floral offerings as the cortege left the church and again at the cemetery, each one placing their floral tribute at the grave. They were Carole Eckels, Barbara Olson, Mary Alice Westlake, Eileen

Walter, Nancy Westlake, Carolyn Walter, Bonnie Shrader, Billie Long, Marvin Walter, Larry Swartz, Garland Walter, Keith Lindell, Larry Schrader, Galen Vogel and Duane Eigenheer.

Richard, Arlo E. –

Arlo E. Richard, 84, died Friday Mar 1 at the Lenox Rest Home after a long illness.  He had been in hospitals at Creston and Des Moines before coming to the Rest Home.

 

Funeral services were Monday, Mar 4 at the Bender Funeral Home, the Rev. James Eddy officiating.  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.

 

Mr. Richard farmed north of Lenox but moved to town more than 50 years ago.  He was a stockman, horse buyer and feed salesman.  The family home was on East Temple Avenue.

 

Mrs Richard, the former Maude Patton died Mar 28, 1953.

 

Surviving are one son, Wm. Gail Richard of Pittsburg, Pa., a daughter Mrs. John McCarroll of Wickenburg, Ariz., a sister, Mrs Ollie Jones of Des Moines, two grandchildren, Mrs. Geo Plavetich and Don Richard of Pittsburg, and a great granddaughter Janet Lynn Plavetich.

 

Mr Richard was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

 

Relatives from a distance who came for the funeral were his son and wife of Pittsburgh Pa., his daughter, Mrs McCarroll from Arizona: his sister Mrs Jones from Des Moines also Mr and Mrs Lorin Van Buskirk of Sioux City, and friends from Des Moines, Omaha and Creston.

Shafer, Harriet Reynolds Keller -

Mrs Harriet Shafer, 83, died at the Greater Community hospital

in Creston Wednesday morning. She had been at the Oswald Nursing Home in Creston since July. Her husband, Samuel, preceded her in death.

 

Survivors include: 4 daughters, Mrs Roy Camden, of Lenox; Mrs Elvis Neely, of Creston, Mrs M E Cummings and Mrs F H Baxter, both of Omaha, 2 sons, Orville Shafer, of Lenox, J H Shafer, of Des Moines; 16

grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Funeral services

will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with the Rev Burton C Collier officiating. Burial in Bethel cemetery at Diagonal.

Shafer, Harriet Reynolds Keller -

Harriet M Shafer, the daughter of G B and Armentia Reynolds,

was born July 28, 1873 near Diagonal.

 

She was united in marriage to John Keller, who preceded her in death. To this union was born one son, Chester, now of Des Moines.

 

Later in life she was married to Samuel L Shafer, who preceded

her in death in 1944. Two sons and four daughters were born into this home. All of them remain to mourn her passing. They are Harold (J H) of Des Monies; Orval of Lenox: Mrs Opal Baxter, of Omaha.

Nebraska; Myrtle (Mrs Melvin Cummings) of Omaha, Nebr.; Marie (Mrs Elvis Neely) of Creston; Florence (Mrs Roy Camden) of Lenox. Also surviving are her 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and many friends. She herself was the last of a family of sixteen children.

 

Mrs Shafer spent most of her life on farms near Diagonal, moving to Lenox about 20 years ago. She was a member of the Diagonal Methodist Church.

 

Death came at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston at 1:00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb 27 at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 30 days.

 

Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at the Bender Funeral Home, the Rev B C Collier, officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery near Diagonal.

Shimer, Minnie Knott Boyer -

Mrs Minnie Shimer, 79, died Friday at 6 a.m. at her home in

Sharpsburg. Her husband preceded her in death. Survivors

include: 2 daughters, Mrs Mary Caven, Mrs Effie Shimer, both

of Sharpsburg; 2 grandchildren. Funeral services were Monday

afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg. Burial

was in the Lenox cemetery.

Minnie Knott, daughter of John and Clarinda Knott, was born near Peoria, Illinois, Oct 3, 1877. She passed from this life Feb 8, 1957, after a long illness.

 

She moved from Illinois, by a covered wagon, at the age of two years, to Taylor County, Iowa. She lived the rest of her life in Taylor County, with the  exception of four years in Excelsior Springs, Mo.

Minnie was united in marriage to Otis Boyer, Feb 12, 1896.

To this union two daughter were born, Mary and Effie. Mr Boyer passed away August 17, 1926. She was then married to John Shimer, May 24, 1930, who passed away July 6,1942.

 

Minnie became a member of the Christian Church at Blue Grove at the age of 17. She also attended the Christian Church at Lenox, and later became a member of the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg.

 

Preceding her in death were her mother and father; four brothers and two sisters.

 

She leaves to mourn her passing her two daughters and their husbands. Mary and Arthur Caven of Conway; Effie and Chester Shimer of Sharpsburg; a granddaughter and husband, Marion and Ben Small of Canoga Park, Calif.; a granddaughter, Maxine Sage and a

great-granddaughter, Nioma Sage of Conway; one sister, Anna Boyden of Sharpsburg; a step-daughter and husband, Alma and Pedley Funcett, their two children and families of Shenandoah; and a host of relatives and friends.

Wherry, John Lawrence -

John Lawrence Wherry, the youngest child of J T Wherry and Hannah Bratton, was born in Linden, Iowa, Jan 18, 1874.  He passed away at his home in Los Angeles, Calif., Feb 5, 1957, after a short illness. Funeral services were held Feb 9 at the beautiful Wilshire Christian church, where he has been a faithful member and officer for thirty years, his pastor, Rev Hoke Dickinson, officiating.

Interment was in the beautiful Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

 

His parents were one of the pioneer families of Lenox moving from Cedar county to Taylor county when John was an infant in 1875. He grew to manhood in the old Wherry home just down the lane west of Murchey's Hill, at that time one of the finest residences in Taylor

county. He attended the grades and high school at Lenox

 

He was married to Sadie Lemon Sept 20, 1900 and lived in the Wherry home for 2 or 3 years with his parents. He lived later

in Missouri, then Kansas, and thirty years ago to Los Angeles.

John and Sadie celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary

Sept 26, 1956 at their home, 2493 Lanterman Terrace, Los

Angeles 39.

 

Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by three sons

and two daughters: Frank of San Diego, Howard of San Fransisco Elwyn, Helen Hines and Adelaide Joseph of Los Angeles, and nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including Jay Hughes of Lenox, Vaughn Hughes of Glendale Calif., a grand niece, Edna Haas

Tourigney of Inglewood, Calif., a host of friends and neighbors

mourn his loss and friendship.

Whitmore, Lyle  “Jack” -

Lyle (Jack) Whitmore, 50, died suddenly Monday morning. The funeral was Jan 24, with burial at Clearfield. He operated a filling station at Clearfield for many years. Surviving are his widow, Helen; one son Paul Roger, two daughters Lillion Ann and Barbara, all at

home; also three brothers, Lester and Paul of Clearfield and Philip of Washington state, and a sister, Lois Whitmore of Clearfield.

Obituary

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Thursday for Lyle (Jack) Whitmore, 50. Rev Howard Ball, Rev Kenneth Dailcy and Rev Ronald Graham, jointly conducted the last rites. Survivors include his wife, Helen, one son, Paul Roger and two daughters, Lillian Ann and Barbara. Among those who also mourn his passing are 3 brothers, Lester and Paul of Clearfield and Phillip of Washington and a sister, Lois Whitmore of Clearfield. Burial was in

the Clearfield cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge at the Crew Funeral Home.

Wilt, Nettie Leota Carlton -

Mrs Porter Wilt, 88 died at the Rosary hospital in Corning Friday morning. She had been in the hospital four weeks and in failing health for some time.

 

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Clearfield

Sunday afternoon The pastor, the Rev Howard H Ball officiated Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

 

Mrs Wilt was born at Mendota, Ill.,  the daughter of Mr and Mrs J M Carlton. The family moved to this vicinity when she was a small child and she had lived here since.

 

Feb 11, 1886 she was married to Porter Wilt. They observed their 71st anniversary this year. They lived on a farm in the Calvary neighborhood all their married life.

 

Surviving are her husband; a son, J H Wilt of Carlisle; and three grandchildren, Jim, Jayne and Margaret.

Wilt, Nettie Leota Carlton -

Nettie Leota Carlton, daughter of Sarah and J W Carlton, was born in Mendota, Ill., May 29, 1868.

 

She was united in marriage to Samuel Porter Wilt Feb 11, 1886. To this union was born one son James Harold Wilt of Carlisle.

 

Her entire married life of 71 years was spent on a farm between

Lenox and Clearfield with the exception of 7 years when she and her husband took care of his aged mother in Lenox. Early in life she became a member of the Methodist church. She was a faithful

worker in the Calvary church many years.

 

Death came at the hospital in Corning Friday, Mar 8,1957.  She is survived by her husband, her son and daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, James F Wilt, Jaynane Zima and Martha Wilt of Carlisle and three great grandchildren James Porter and Julia Wilt

and Elizabeth Zima. Also one brother of Des Moines and several

nephews and nieces.

 

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb 10, at the Clearfield

Methodist Church, the Rev Howard F Ball officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.

Zollars, Carrie Lindsey -

Mrs Carrie Zollars, 67, died at the Ringgold hospital, Mt Ayr, Saturday morning. She had lived on a farm south of Clearfield for 25 years. She had been in ill health for some time. Funeral services and

burial were held at Quincy Ill Tuesday. Surviving are her husband

William: a son, Gerald, 3 sisters and 2 brothers at Quincy.

Zollars, Carrie Lindsey -

Funeral services were held for Mrs Carrie Zollar, 67, Monday

afternoon at the Crew Funeral Home with Rev Howard Ball officiating. She was a long time resident of Clearfield.

 

Born near Quincy, Ill. on Feb. 19, 1889, Carrie was the daughter of Mr and Mrs David Lindsey.  On Oct. 13, 1913 she was united in marriage to William Zollar.  In 1931 they moved to a farm near Logan where they lived for 7 years.  Then they moved to this community where she lived until her death.

 

Mrs Zollar passed away at the Ringgold County Hospital where she had been receiving treatment.  She leaves to mourn her husband, 1 son, Gerald, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, and 7 nieces, all of Quincy, Ill.
