Abernathy, Fred –
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Bender funeral
home for Fred Abernathy, 70, prominent retired business man, who died at his home Monday at 10:45 a.m. Mr. Abernathy has been in poor health about 12 years, and seriously ill for the past month.
The deceased was born on a farm east of town and lived in
this vicinity all his life. He owned the Lenox Pantorium from 1909 until he retired in 1943. He was a member of the Methodist church.
In 1910 he was married to Nellie Bran of Hopkins, Mo. She died in 1923. In 1925 he married Lora Proctor, R.N., of St. Joseph, who survives. One sister, Ruth Abernathy also survives. Two brothers preceded him in death.

Blessman, Frank O. -
Frank O. Blessman. son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Blessman was born Oct. 20, 1868 at Mason City, Ill., and died at Maryville Hospital Oct. 4, 1953, age 84 years.
On May 15, 1892 he was united in marriage to Miss Laura Blessman
at Killbourne, Ill. To this union were born one daughter, who died in infancy, and two sons: Harry of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.. and John of Clearfield.
Mr. Blessman followed fanning for 57 years, 48 of which were spent near Clearfield.
To cherish his memory besides his two sons, are 5 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, two sisters Lottie Thee, Mason City, Ill., and Maggie Moore of Springfield, Ill., other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Oct. 6 at J. R. Crew Funeral Home
by Rev. C. E. McPherson. Interment in Clearfield cemetery.

Brokaw, Eva Walter -
Eva Walter Brokaw daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth Walter
was born March 29, 1874 and passed away November 22, 1953, 4:20 p. m. at the Rosary Hospital in Corning after an cute illness of about ten weeks.
She was born in Jasper Township in Adams County near Brooks, where she grew to womanhood, and taught in the rural schools until she was married on May 12, 1896, to Frank Abraham Brokaw who preceded her in death Dec. 31, 1935.
To this union three children were born: Charles Walter of Lenox; Leland Stanford of Corning and Frederick Milo who preceded his mother in death in 1923, at the age of 17 years.
The first year of their marriage was spent on a farm southwest of Prescott, then on a farm one-half mile north of Mercer Center. After the loss of her companion she made her home with her two sons until she broke her hip in May, 1950. Then she made her home with
her son, Leland.
She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and eleven great
grandchildren; one brother Charley Walter of Prescott; one
sister Rose Boylen of Sioux City; Iowa. Also preceding her in death were five .sisters: Mrs. Amelia Shields; Mrs. Tillie Ruben Mrs. Louisa
LuPorte, Mrs. Susie Mosier and Mrs. Anna McClelland, and two
brothers Frank and Frederick Walter.
She united with the Methodist church at Mercer Center in early
life and continued active as long as health permitted. She was always a devoted wife and mother and her first interest was her home and family. During her long period of illness she was a very patient sufferer.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Mercer Center Church with the pastor, Rev. E. A. Cunningham officiating. The body was tenderly laid to rest in the Walnut Grove cemetery at Corning.
The pall bearers were Will Schafroth, Raymond Bunting, Clyde Herbst, Harvey Riley, Harold Riley and George Schafroth Music was furnished by Leo Caskey and Mrs. Raymond Riley and Mrs. Glen Vogel, pianist.

Bryant, John –
Grant Bryant received word this week that his brother John
Bryant 73, died Thursday, Aug. 13, at Sanger, Cali. John and
his family lived on a farm east of Lenox where Abe Beck now
resides. Surviving are his wife Ethel, who was in a hospital and unable to attend the funeral; and one son Vernon. A daughter,
Ruth died several years ago. John's death leaves only 2 .brothers, Grant of Lenox and Will of Fresno Calif., of the family of ten children.

Donaldson, Donna Rae –
Donna Rae Donaldson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Donaldson,
was born July 22, 1937, and departed this life at the age of 16 years and 27 days at the Greater Community hospital in Creston, Aug. 18, 1953.
At the age of 13 Donna united with the Christian church at Lenox and has attended the Lenox high school the past two years. Donna's sunny disposition won her many friends, and she was loved dearly by all who knew her.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her parents; a sister, Dianna
Lea; a half sister, Ramona; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Lillie and John Donaldson, a great grandmother, Mrs. Mollie Pullen of Shenandoah; 3 uncles, Harold Lillie of Fremont, Neb. Earle Lillie of Lenox, and Robert Donaldson of Sharpsburg; 4 cousins; her fiance, Jack Wycoff of Clearfield; and a host of friends.
Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 20, at 2:30 p. m. from the Christian church in Lenox. Rev. Claude Risinger and Rev. Charles Hagee officiated. Music was by Carol Campbell with Margaret Robinson, pianist Burial was in Lenox.
Pall bearers were Russell Sprague, Larry Rogers, Duane Tyler, Fred Sprague, Gaylen Vogel and Russell Steele.

Donaldson, Donna Rae –
Donna Donaldson, 16, died Tuesday morning, August 18, in a Creston hospital as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident two miles west of Lenox Saturday evening about 7 p.m. Her fiancé, Jack Wycoff of Clearfield, driver of the car, was hospitalized for injuries, chiefly a broken jaw. The car skidded on gravel at the corner near Richard Talters home and went into a five foot ditch.
Miss Donaldson had a deep cut under her right arm and deep cuts on her face from which she lost quantities of blood. She also received internal injuries, and several transfusions were given. The couple had planned to be married Sunday.
Funeral services were held this afternoon, Thursday, August 20, at the Lenox Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Charles Hagee and Rev. Claude Risinger. Interment is to be in Fairview cemetery.
Miss Donaldson is survived by her mother and step-father, Mr and Mrs. Harold Donaldson and a sister, Diana Lee.

Duffield, William B. –
Mrs. R. C. Kirkpatrick was called to Wisconsin Saturday by the serious injury of her brother, William B. Duffield. Bob Kirkpatrick drove Mrs. Kirkpatrick to Wisconsin. Mr. Duffield passed away Saturday night. On Wednesday Mrs. Kirkpatrick and Bob went to Rock Island, Ill. to the home of the Vernon Tyler family, returning to Lenox Thursday.

Dugan, Mrs. Harry -
Lenox relatives have received word of the death of Mrs. Harry
Dugan, 66, who died July 24 at her home in Loveland, Colo.
Burial was at College Springs, Colo. on the following Sunday. Mrs. Dugan was a sister of Mrs. Lee Short of Lenox who attended
the funeral services for her sister at College Springs.

Gunderman, Harry R. –
Harry R. Gunderman, 55, assistant cashier at the Atlantic State Bank, died at a hospital there Monday. He had been in failing health for a number of years.
The son of John and Anna Cox Gunderman, he was born in Lenox Sept. 5, 1898 and grew to manhood on a Taylor county farm. Following his graduation at Lenox high school, he attended business college at York, Neb. and worked in banks in a number of places before settling in Atlantic in September of 1926.
Aug. 13, 1924, he was married to Agnes Johnson of Columbus, Neb.
He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and B.P.O, Elks Lodges and past exalted ruler of Atlantic Elks.
Surviving are his widow, a son, Loren of Council Bluffs, a daughter, Marianne Gunderman of Omaha; three brothers, Lorenz of Villisca, Frank of Kansas City, Kan. and John of Albany Ore.; and two sisters, Jennie Bigger of Lisbon and Minnie Boon of Lucerne Valley, Cali. Deceased are a sister, Dora Johnson and a brother, William, who is buried beside his parents in Lenox Cemetery.
Funeral services and burial were at Atlantic.

Hart, Richard L. -
Richard L. Hart, son of John and Mary Hart, was born Jan. 21, 1894 and died in Maloy la., Sept. 2, 1953, age 59 years, 7 months, 11 days. He lived for a number of years south of Clearfield where he attended the Rural school. Farming was his chosen occupation. He is survived by three brothers, Dennis, John and Edward of Maloy; sisters: Elizabeth Hart, and Mrs. Maggie Shay, Maloy; Mrs. Carolyn Shay, Des Moines and Mrs. Helen Pierce, Washington, D. C
Requiem High Mass was held Sept. 5, 9:30 a. m. in the Catholic
church, Maloy. Interment in St. Mary's cemetery, Maloy. Services
conducted by M. J. Culhane.
Attending the funeral from Clearfield were E. Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Newburn and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Newburn.

Hoffman, Charles F. -
Charles F. Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hoffman, was born Oct. 17, 1871 near Evans City, Pa., the eldest son in a family of ten children and departed this life Oct. 7 at Washington, la., following an
illness of four months.
Rev. Hoffman, after attending public school, entered college,
graduating from Westminister in 1899, and finished at the Alleghaney Seminary in 1903, and was then ordained to the ministry
of the gospel.
Following his trip to Utah in the interest of Home Missions he located at Jamestown, Kan., where he was married. Rev. and
Mrs. Hoffman have served several congregations: Brookings,
S. D.; Keota la., Emporia, La Crosse and Saxman, Kan., and his last pastorate in Clearfield, retiring in 1953. Rev. Hoffman is held in memory not only by his congregation, but by citizens where he lived.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; one daughter Marian
Wiggins, Sierra Madre, Calif., and one son, Paul Hoffman, of
Kansas City, Mo., and three granddaughters, four brothers,
Edward, Harry, William and Adam and one sister of Pennsylvania.
Funeral services were held Friday at the United Presbyterian church. Interment in Clearfield cemetery. The Rev. C. E.
Hawthorne conducted the services.

Huffman, Herbert T. “Bert” -
Word was received Friday of the death at 1 p. m. in Spokane, Wash., of Bert Huffman, 82. The body is being brought to Clearfield for funeral services and burial. He is survived by his wife Lena, 2 sons Merle of Benton; Zed of Clearfield; two daughters Bernice Wasson and Edith Huffman, Spokane and 6 grandchildren.

Huffman, Herbert T. “Bert” -
Herbert T. Huffman, younger of two sons of Obadiah and Sarah Rider Huffman, was born Feb. 19, 1871 in Ringgold County la., near Maloy, and departed this life Sept. 11. 1953 in the Deaconess Hospital, Spokane, Wash., aged 82 years, 6 months and 22 days.
He attended the rural school near Maloy and grew to manhood
at the place of his birth. Being interested in agriculture he chose farming as his life work.
On Oct. 27, 1892 he was united in marriage to Lena D. Beamer
at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zed Beamer, south of
Clearfield and located on a farm near there.
To this union they were blessed with five children, three sons
Floyde E. who passed away October 22, 1932; Merle of Benton, Zed of Clearfield; and two daughters, Bernice Wasson and Edith Huffman of Spokane, Wash.
Mr. and Mrs. Huffman moved to Clearfield in 1920. In 1950
they moved to Spokane to be near their daughters.
He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America Lodge.
To cherish his memory besides his faithful wife, two sons and
two daughters are six grandchildren: Frieda Holliday of Nampa, Idaho; Lucille Dockstader, Maxine Buell, Cleorie Cronkhite of Des Moines; McEllyn Huffman of Handle, Wash.; Erwood Huffman of
Clearfield; also 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Floyde, and brother, Friend Huffman.
Mr. Huffman was of a cheery disposition, and made many friends. He was always ready to give aid to those in need, and assist in helping religiously and in civic affairs. As one has said of him, you had a strong, united home, which is a standard of the highest type of citizenship. He was devoted to his home and family. It was a source of great joy that Mr. and Mrs. Huffman could celebrate both
their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries in 1942 and 1952.
He will be missed by those who knew him best.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 16 from the Methodist church in Clearfield. Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Leach, Harold A. -
One county fireman was killed and a second injured when their
heavy tank-truck overturned at an intersection at Bakersfield
Calif., Sept. 3. The dead fireman was Harold A. Leach, 41, of 10025
Glenn St., Bakersfield. He had been employed by the county fire department only eight days when he died in the crushed cab
of the huge truck. His companion and driver was rushed to the hospital with minor injuries and shock.
The tanker was on its way to an oil well fire when it attempted
to turn at an intersection while traveling at a speed of 35
to 40 miles an hour. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Investigating officers say the tanker rolled onto its left side and skidded for more than 100 feet before rolling completely over. The driver was thrown clear of the truck but Leach was trapped in the door frame of the crushed cab.
Harold was born near Kent, Iowa, May 26, 1912. He was raised
in the Lenox community where he .graduated from Lenox high school. He united with the Lenox Christian church when a boy and always tried to live a good Christian life.
He was married to Vina Olson of Shenandoah October 28, 1933.
The past 12 years they made their home in Bakersfield. Survivors include his wife Vina, a son, Larry; his mother, Mrs. Nellie Leach of Creston; three brothers Glenn of Des Moines; Earl of Creston and Alven of Prescott; two sisters, Mrs. Bert Shawler of Lenox and Mrs.
Lloyd Chandler of Sharpsburg, His father, Wesley H. Leach, preceded him in death.
He was laid to rest Sept. 8. Services were held at 10 a. m. in the Greenlawn Chapel with Rev. Hollister Miller of the Christian church officiating. Interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Those from this vicinity who attended the services were Mrs.
Bert Shawler, Mrs. Lloyd Chandler, Mrs. Nellie Leach, Alven and Earl Leach.

Long, Lola Henderson -
Mrs. Lola Long, 86, a former resident of Lenox, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Claire Hawthorne at Clarinda Saturday morning. She was an aunt of H. Roy Long of Lenox. Funeral services were at Clarinda Tuesday at 11 a. m, and interment at Clearfield.

Long, Lola Henderson -
Lola Henderson Long, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A Henderson was born in 1868 and died Aug. 28, 1953 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hawthorne in Clarinda, la. In 1900 she was married to Wilber M. Long and they lived in Clearfield until his death in 1932. Two children, a nephew, Webert Long and Veva Long Hawthorne were raised and educated by Mr. and Mrs. Long. Mrs Long was a consistent member of the United Presbyterian church. She is survived
by the nephew and niece and their families, also one sister, Mrs. Marie Brown of Hastings, Neb., two brothers, Wm. Henderson of Tingley and Houston Henderson of North Carolina, other relatives and friends. Funeral was held at 11 a. m. in Clarinda and interment in Clearfield cemetery.

Monahan, James Harlan -
James Harlan Monahan, son of James and Sarah Monahan was born at Holt, la., April 16, 1871 and passed away in the University Hospital at Iowa City Oct. 20 1853, after a lingering illness, most of which time he was cared for in the Young's Nursing Home at Clarinda, la.
He was raised on a farm and this was his occupation during
most of his active years. His wife was Miss Nellie Marsh of Corning,
la., and to this union three daughters were born. All are living and were at his funeral: Mrs. Claude Drennen and Mrs. Vernon McNutt of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. S. Copperstone of Scottsbluff, Neb.
Besides these he leaves to mourn his passing, three grandchildren,
one brother R. B. Monahan of St. Joseph, Mo. and four sisters, Mrs. Sarah E. West of Corning, la., Mrs. Mary Menoher of Pueblo, Colo., Mrs. Lillie Menoher of Lenox, and Mrs. Alta Nevins of Bedford, la., three sons-in-law and other relatives and friends.
The funeral services were at Shum Funeral Home in Bedford Thursday, Oct. 22, conducted by Rev. Fred H. Cowles of the Bedford Baptist Church where Mr. Monahan held his membership. The music was furnished by Mrs. Virginia Caskey.
Pallbearers were Virgil Vincent, Ernie Campbell, Harvey Drennen, Guy Drennen, Claude Drennen and Vernon McNutt. The body was laid in rest in Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa.

The Funeral services for Mrs. Ed Moore, former Jennie Burch,
were held in Brush, Colo. Thursday, Sept. 17. The Moores were
former Clearfield residents. Mr. Moore is an uncle of Carroll and
Carlos Horton and Helen Lou Duey of Clearfield.

Edith M. Parker, 70, of near Diagonal, died Friday morning,
Aug. 7, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Hancock in
Indianapolis. Funeral services were held at her home Tuesday,
conducted by Rev. Sutherland of the church of the Nazarene.
Burial was at Rising Sun.
Survivors include two sons, Milo and Archie, both of Diagonal,
and 2 daughters, Mrs. Velma Bolte of Diagonal, and Mrs.
Hancock.

Frank Routh, 69, prominent retired farmer, died at his home
in Lenox, Friday, Nov. 20 at 12:45 p. m. He had lived in the
Diagonal vicinity most of his life. He and his wife moved to
Lenox four years ago.
Survivors: his wife, Carrie, 3 sons. Francis and Lee of Diagonal; Marvin of Lenox, 5 grandchildren; 3 brothers Fred of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Bert of Clearfield; Glen of Diagonal one sister, Mrs. Nettie Tindle of Clearfield.
Funeral services were Sunday at 2 p. m. at the Methodist church in Clearfield, with Rev. C. E. McPherson officiating Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Routh, Frank -
Frank Leslie Routh, eldest son of James and Mary Jane Routh,
was born in Alexis, Ill., March 11, 1884 and passed from this
life at his home in Lenox, Iowa, Nov. 20, 1953 aged 69 years, 8
months and 9 days.
He moved with his parents, in infancy, to Ogallala, Neb., where
they homesteaded a claim. When 8 years old he moved with his
parents back to Alexis in a covered wagon. Here he grew to manhood and farmed there until 1910 when he came to Iowa,
locating near Diagonal, la.
On May 4, 1911 he was united in marriage to Carrie Ann Tindle.
God blessed this union with four sons. He was a true and faithful husband and loving father.
He leaves to mourn his departure besides his beloved wife, three sons: Francis and Lee of Diagonal, la.; and Marvin of Lenox, la.; three daughters-in-law; five grandchildren; three brothers, Fred of St. Petersburg Fla.; Bert of Clearfield, la.;. and Glen of Diagonal; one sister Mrs. Nettie Tindle of Clearfield; and 12 nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death
were his son Freddie; his, sister Lola Tindle; and his parents.
His life occupation was farming. In 1949 he retired to his home in Lenox. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Clearfield. His soul has taken its flight to God who gave it.

Schmitt, Anna -
Mrs. Anna Schmitt, 73, Green Bay, Wisc., died suddenly there
Sept. 8. She suffered a heart attack at her home in the morning
Mrs. Schmitt was born in Germany, and came to this country
with her parents as a child. They settled in Iowa where she
married Charles Schmitt at Ottumwa. The couple lived in Lenox, Iowa, until moving to Green Bay eight years ago. Mr. Schmitt,
a retired building contractor died three months after their arrival in Green Bay.
Mrs. Schmitt is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Josephine Stump, Des Moines; and Mrs. Floyd Derrickson, Lincoln Ill., five sons, Edward De Pere, Ernest and John, Green Bay, Albert, Rockford, Ill.; and Carl of Chicago; 21 grandchildren one great grandchild; two sisters and five brothers.
Father Cornelius offered the requiem mass at.9 o'clock Friday
morning in St Mary of the Angels church. Burial was in Allouez cemetery.

Mrs. Richard Bunn received word Sunday evening that her
father, Joe Scott, had passed away at Charles City. The Bunn
family left for there Monday morning.

Smith, Winnifred Edna Hanna -
Mrs. Earl Smith passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 1953, at 12:30
p.m., at St. Mary's hospital, Nebraska City, Neb., following a
heart attack. Mrs. Smith had been a patient sufferer with arthritis for many years. She was taken Wednesday to the hospital where she passed away Saturday.
Winnifred Edna Hanna, the daughter of William and Mary Hanna was born June 2, 1890, at Lenox, Iowa. She was married to Earl P. Smith of Lenox in 1909, at Ellendale, N. Dak.
She Is survived by her husband, Earl, one son Clifford of Omaha;
one daughter, Mrs. Lela Mclaughlin, Nebraska City, seven
grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Also four sisters, Mrs. B. B. Smith and Mrs. J. E. Gray of Glendale, N. Dak.; Mrs. Kate
Sprouse, Fargo, N. Dak.; Mrs. Julian Field, Payette, Idaho; besides a number of nieces and nephews who mourn her passing.
She was preceded in, death by her parents and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Fasstender
Funeral home with burial at Nebraska City. Those attending from this vicinity were Mrs. Laura Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith, Mrs.
Zetta Wilt, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Brown,
