Abbitt, Myra Jane Dougherty –

Mrs. John Abbitt, 81, a former resident of Lenox, died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Chester Turville of Neillsville, Wis. Friday, Feb. 15th at two p.m.  Last rites and burial were in Lenox, Tuesday.

Myra Jane Doughterty, was born in Page county, Iowa, on March 28, 1870.  She was the eldest of a family of six children.

As a young lady she was employed in a printing shop and after her marriage to John Abbitt of Bedford, Iowa, June 7, 1892, they owned and operated a printing shop of their own.  They were the parents of two children, Mrs. Lloyd H. Smith (Audrey) of Cranton, Wis. And Russell, who died in infancy.  A foster daughter, Thelma, now Mrs. Ralph Sutton of Sheldon, Wis. made her home with the Abbitts as a young girl.

Following Mr. Abbitt’s death in 1921, Mrs. Abbitt made her home part of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Smith, and also did housekeeping for other.  The past three years she had lived with a granddaughter, Mrs. Chester Turville of Neillsville, Wis.

Mrs. Abbitt was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.  Surviving are her daughter, Audrey Smith, one foster daughter, Mrs. Ralph Sutton of Sheldon, Wis., two granddaughters, Mrs. Chester Turville of Neillsville, Wis. and Mrs. Arthur Anderson of Marshfield, Wis., and four great grandchildren, Christine, Dale, Ann and Wayne Turville, all of Neillsville, Wis.

Funeral services were held at Neillsville, Wis. Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Virgil Nulton of that city.  Services were also held in Lenox Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ with the Rev. Claude W. Risinger officiating.  Interment in Fairview cemetery.

Archer, Anna Eigenheer -

Mrs. Anna Eigenheer Archer, 81. of Prescott, died Sunday after

a long illness.  Funeral services were held Friday at Prescott with interment in Mount Zion cemetery.

Born Oct. 13, 1870, in Des Moines. she came to Prescott at

an early age.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mable Castle of Creston

and Mrs. Florence Fisher of Prescott; three sons, Orville of

Nevinville, Frank of Lenox and Harold of Merrifield, Minn.;

three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Sears of California, Mrs. Clara Miller

of Eureka, Ill., and Mrs. Rose [?] of Prescott and one brothers, George of California.

Black, Verbel -

Verbel Black, 59 died Saturday night at the Veterans' hospital

in Omaha. His home was in Carson, where he had the Chevrolet

agency. Survivors: his wife Effie Cochran Black; two brothers,

Lee of Des Moines and Sam of Lenox; one sister, Mrs. Mary

Einfeldt of Diagonal.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday in Carson with graveside services and burial in Fairview cemetery here.

Brown, Violet Johnson -

I. H. Cade received an account Thursday of the death of his cousin, Mrs. C. B. Brown, who passed away Jan. 31st at her home in Greely, Colo., following a six months illness. 

Mrs. Brown, who was formerly Violet Johnson, was born in Lenox Dec. 29th, 1872, and spent her girlhood days here. She was married Feb. 7th, 1897 at Burlington to Clarence B. Brown and they continued to live in Iowa until they moved to Missouri in 1907. Two years later they moved to Fairmont, Neb., where they lived until going to Wyoming in 1918. They lived on a farm near Pine Bluffs, Wyo., for 25 years until they retired and moved to Greeley in 1943.

Besides her husband, C. B. Brown, she is survived by three sons, Cecil E. of Omaha and Walter S. and Jay E. of Pine Bluffs, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. Nina Rogers of York, Neb., and Mrs. Bertha Wensell of Sand Springs, Okla.; two brothers, Sheirl Johnson of Arcadia, Kan.

and Earl Johnson of Deerfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and 11great

grandchildren. Services and burial were at Pine Bluffs, Wyo.

Bubb, Oren T. -

Word has been received here of the death of Oren T. Bubb,

66, at his home in Los Angeles, Calif. Services were held at the

Chapel of Chimes in Inglewood Park. Left to mourn his passing

are his wife, Marie; a daughter, Eva; one brother, Edward; besides

nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Lonnie of Lenox ;and George of California, preceded him in death. Mr. Bubb was born and raised four miles north of Lenox, on what is known as the Charles Morris farm.

Christy, Edward William -

Edward William Christy, son of Mary and William Christy was born at Perry, Iowa, August 25, 1886, and departed this life at his home in Shenandoah February 22, 1952 at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 27 days.

November 24, 1934, he was united in marriage to Lucille Corliss.

To this union one son, Richard Edward, was born.  Mr. Christy was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Elrod. Surviving are his wife and son and one sister, Mrs. Lonnie Hunter

besides other relatives and a host of friends.

He spent most of his life in the Sharpsburg vicinity and was

a member of the Blue Grove  church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Arnold

Funeral Home in Lenox with the Rev. Claude W. Risinger officiating.

Burial in the Blue Grove cemetery.

Cox, Kate –

Mrs. Kate Cox, 85, died at 7 a.m. Monday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lampe at 3133 Jackson Street, Sioux City.  Her husband preceded her in death 20 years ago.  Since that time she had made her home with her daughter, spending part of each year at the home of her other daughter, Mrs. Roland A. Walter at Lenox.  Besides her two daughters surviving are six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mrs. Cox was a member of the Methodist Church and a member of the PEO sisterhood.  Her father was a Methodist minister.

Services were held at Lockwood Funeral Home at Rock Rapids on Wednesday at 2 p.m.  Interment in the Rock Rapids cemetery.

David, Marie Howe-

C. A. Young received a message Sunday telling of the death

of his niece, Mrs. Marie David of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. He

left to attend the funeral services which were held Wednesday.

Mrs. David was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Howe,

former residents of the Lenox vicinity.

Denton, Wayne A. –

Mrs. Artie Morley received word last Wednesday of the death of her brother-in-law, Wayne A. Denton, 59, of Medicine Lake, Wash.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Sunset Memorial Chapel in Spokane, Wash. with burial in Spokane.

Born March 28, 1890 in Oakland, Iowa, the son of Coleman S. and Mary Margaret Denton, he moved to Lenox in 1903 and remained in the Lenox and Clearfield vicinity until 1941 when he moved to Medical Lake.

Surviving are his wife, a daughter of Mrs. Iris Fehrman of Sioux City, a son, Allen of Medical Lake, a step-daughter, Mrs. Mildred Johnson of Medical Lake, a step-son, Roy Simmons of Spokane.  Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Harry Lyddon of Clearfield and Mrs. Walter R. Kerns of Creston, and a brother, Earl of Creston.

Denton, Wayne A. -

Wayne A. Denton, son of Coleman and Mary Denton, was born on March 28th, 1893 in Oakland, Iowa and died at Medical Lake, Wash., April 8th, 1952 at the age of 59 years. The Denton family moved to Taylor county when Wayne was in his youth and he lived near Clearfield and Lenox until 1941 when he located in Washington.

He is survived by a daughter, Iris Fehrman of Sioux City and a son, Allen Denton of Medical Lake; also a brother, Earl Denton of Creston and two sisters, Flora Lyddon of Clearfield and Bernice Kerns of Creston; a step-daughter, Mildred Johnson of Medical Lake and a step-son Roy Simmons of Spokane, Wash.

Funeral) services and burial were in Medical Lake, April 10.

Douglas, Grayce C. Falwell-

Mrs. Grayce Douglas, 60,  died Tuesday morning at her home

in Tabor. Death was unexpected and was attributed to a

blood clot of the brain. Funeral services are being held today (Thursday), at Tabor with burial at Liberty, Neb., beside her husband, Eara Douglas. 

Coming to Lenox in 1934, Mrs. Douglas resided here until her

husband passed away in 1941.  A year later she moved to Tabor

which has since been her home She was an active member of

the United Presbyterian church 

Three sisters survive, among them being Mrs. High Clipson of Lenox.

Douglas, Grayce C. Falwell -

Grayce C. Falwell, the daughter of John and Eva Falwell, was born Mary 18, 1889 near Beatrice, Neb., and passed away at her home In Tabor on Feb. 19 at the age of 62. She grew up in Blue Springs,

Neb., where she attended school and graduated from high school

with the class of 1907.

She was united in marriage to Eara A. Douglas on Feb. 2, 1910

at the home of her sister, Mrs. Joe Oliver at Tabor They made

their home on a farm near Liberty, Neb. for 24 years where

Grayce was active in both church and community. In 1934

she and her husband moved to Lenox, Iowa where they farmed

until he died in 1942. The following year Grayce moved to Tabor

and established her .present home.

Grayce as a young girl united with the Methodist church at

Blue Springs. Wherever she lived she maintained an active church membership. Since living in Tabor she has been a member of the Congregational church which played a large part in her life.

She is survived by three sisters and a brother, Lila Oliver, Sidney, Ralph J. Falwell, Kansas City, Gertrude Clipson Lenox, and Adelia Patton, Fairmont Neb., and many nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Reeves funeral home with the Rev. John Blough officiating.  Burial was at  Liberty, Neb.

Soloist was Mrs. Lisle Weathererhead, accompanied by Blanch

Dalton. Pallbearers werc Max Cochran, Ralph Falwel, Ben Glecker,

Tom Rittgers and Warren  Oliver, and Paul Oliver.  In  charge

of flowers were Mrs. A E Engle, Mrs. Lina Cotter, Mrs. L D Dyke

and Mrs. Henry Reafleng.

While Mrs. Grayce Douglas had no immediate family here we cannot help but feel that the children in the Tabor schools really took over the "family" role for her. It was a shock to the community to learn of her death, and keenly touched were the many children with whom

she had come into contact and who had learned to love her for

her kindly, thoughtful ways.  Mrs. Douglas will fee missed.--Tabor Newspaper

Freeman, Eldon -

A number of Lenox people attended funeral services for Eldon

Freeman, 36, at the Lutheran church at Fontanelle, Friday at 2 p. m. It was a military funeral with burial in the Fontanelle cemetery.

Eldon was the only son of Ed Freeman of Lenox. He died on Tuesday at the Veterans hospital m Des Moines. Other survivors include his

wife, one daughter, two sons and one sister, Mrs. Esther Schroder, all of Fontanelle.

Gillet, Jennie –

Mrs. Jennie Gillet, 76, passed away at the Lenox Rest Home April 14.  Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Corning Methodist Church with burial in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Corning.

Graham, Leila Ada Hurd -

Graveside services were held at Fairview cemetery on Tuesday

for Mrs. Ada Graham, 87, a former Lenox resident. She lived

in what is now the Pearl Reynolds home while she lived here.

At the time of her passing she resided in Elsberry, Mo. Her

husband, E. Y. Graham, preceded her in death. Survivors are

one son, Ralph, and a daughter, Leila, both of Elsberry.

Obituary

Lelia Ada Hurd was born July 23, 1865 at Morning Sun, Iowa,

passed away at the home her daughter in Elsberry, Mo., May 31, 1952, age 86 years, 10 months and 8 days. She was the youngest of ten children of J. L. Hurd and Nancy C. Hurd. When she was 11 years old she united with the Presbyterian church. In 1880 she moved

with her parents to Burlington, Iowa. She was graduated from

Parson college. In 1890 she went as a home missionary to the Seminole and Creek Indians at Wewoka, Indian territory (now Oklahoma) and taught for three years in the schools there.

On October 30, 1895, she was united in marriage to Edwin Y.

Graham of Monmouth. Illinois, and moved to Lenox, Iowa. To

this union two children were born: Ralph Graham and Lelia

Gray, both of Elsberry. The husband and father passed away

December 29, 1909. Although she was left with the care of two small children she was ever busy with her church work, serving as a teacher in Sunday school for many years and a leader in missionary work. She also took an active part in all community projects.

She moved to Elsberry in the spring of 1920 and soon became

a member of the Elsberry Associated Reformed Presbyterian

church. She loved her church and attended services as long as she

was able.

Surviving are the son and daughter, son-in-law, daughter-

in-law six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, several

nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Groff, Lena -

Mrs. Ruth Young received word Wednesday notifying her of the death of her aunt, Mrs. Joe (Lena) Groff of Nodaway, who had passed; away that morning, which happened to be her 79th birthday following a stroke. Carl, Harry and Ernest Spring are all  nephews

of the deceased.

Mrs. Groff is survived by her husband, who is an invalid, two sons, two daughters, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.  The Groffs are former residents of Lenox.

Hance, Charles -

Burial was here Tuesday for Charles Hance, 71, a farmer in the Sharpsburg and Creston vicinities since 1881 who died at his home north of Creston, Sunday. Services were held at the First Presbyterian church in Creston.

Charles Hance was born on March 26, 1880, near Versailles,

Ind. He was the son of James and Nancy Jane Johnson Hance.

He moved to the Sharpsburg community in 1881 with his

parents and moved to farm north of Creston in 1923.

He was married at Sharpsburg, Dec. 25, 1902, to Luna Olive

Winslow, who survives him.  Also surviving are four sons,

Lewis Marion Hance, Marvin Lester Hance, Elvin Delno Hance

and Reldon Ernest Hance; and a daughter Verna Lucille Blair,

all of Creston; a brother, Dale Hance of Richland Neb., and a

sister, Eva S. Filbert of Sharpsburg.  One daughter, Lila Vanlora died in infancy.

Hufnagel, Ella A. Walter -

Mrs. Simon Hufnagel, 77, long time resident of Lenox, died at

10 p. m. Friday at the Rosary hospital in Corning. She had been in ill health for some tune after suffering a stroke.

Obituary

Ella A. Walter, daughter of Henri and Louisa Walter, was born November the 21st, 1874 in Adams county, Mercer .township

near Lenox, Iowa; and passed this life at the Rosary hospital

in Corning, February the 29th, 1952.

On April the 6th, 1896, she was united in marriage with Simon F. Hufnagel. To this union was born one son. Frankie, who died at the age of 14. Ella was one of 11 children, four sisters and seven brothers. Preceding her in death were the son Frankie, one infant sister, and three 'brothers, Edward, John and Henry.

Surviving are the husband; two sisters, Mrs. Maleba Ely of

San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Delia Pierce, of Los Angeles, Calif.;

four brothers, Jacob, Andrew, Louis and Ben Walter, all of

Lenox; and many other relatives and friends.

She united with the Methodist church when a young lady. The Bible was a much used book in her home where she quietly enjoyed the good things of life, tenderly cared for her flowers and lived the life of a loyal and devoted wife and a good neighbor.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Harold Butts at

the Arnold Funeral Home, Sunday afternoon. Music was furnished

by Rolland Buxton and Norma Paymal. Pallbearers: Orval Walter, Harry Walter, Julian Walter, Henrv Walter, Dale Walter and Lonnle Walter. Interment In Fairview cemetery

Kent, Roy E -

Roy E. Kent, 76, passed away June 8th at Council Bluffs, and

services and burial were at Jamestown, N. Dak., June 12th.

Mr. Kent was a native of Solon, Iowa. He was the husband of the

former Bertha Reed, who lived in Lenox until the time of her marriage.

Kirkpatrick, H.C. -

H. C. Kirkpatrick, 69, passed away at his home here Friday June 13, following an illness of several months duration. He had undergone surgery for brain cancer at Mercy hospital in Des Moines May 21st, and was brought home June 2nd.  Services, in charge of the Arnold Funeral Home, were held Sunday afternoon, with the Rev. Harold Butts of the Lenox Methodist church officiating. The body was taken to Blair, Wisconsin, with interment in Zion cemetery there on Tuesday. The Rev. Konracl Urberg, Lutheran pastor and friend of the family, conducted graveside services.

Horton Cyrus, son of John Albert and Millie Torrey Kirkpatrick,

was born October 28, 1882, at Harper, in Keokuk county, Iowa. He was one of ten children. In 1904, he was united in marriage to Laura Duffield at Iowa City. To this union eight children were born, seven of whom together with his wife, survive him.

A lifelong newspaper publisher and editor, Mr. Kirkpatrick

owned and operated papers in Iowa, Wisconsin and Montana

though he considered Blair, Wisconsin, as his home. He was

long prominent in the Wisconsin publishing field, and was notable

for his civic and editorial accomplishments. Retiring from

business in 1941, he, with his family, resided for a number of

years in southern California, until re-entering the newspaper

business with the purchase of the Lenox Time Table in 1944.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Blair, Wisconsin and was a Royal Arch Mason. Surviving him are his wife, Laura, and the following sons and  daughters: Stanley D. of Whittier, Calif., William D. of Springfield, Ore.; and Robert C. of Lenox; Mrs. John (Zora)

Burke of Whittier, Calif., Mrs. Vernon (Nadine) Tyler of Rock Island, Ill., Mrs. Milton (June) Hanson of Covina, Calif., and Miss Lois Kirkpatrick of Lenox.  He was preceded in death by one son, Richard.

The following brothers and sisters also survive: G. L. Kirkpatrick

of Independence, Wis. Irvin Kirkpatrick of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Charles Haneline of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Garfield Sampson of Columbus, Ohio. He is survived by nine grandchildren.

A sportsman and a self-educated man, Mr. Kirkpatrick was

outstanding in both business and society, and gave much of his

time and efforts to the public good. As a weekly newspaper

publisher, he knew no peer.

Lepley, John -

Mrs. Agnes Wood received word last week of the death of her father, John Lepley, 89, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gray of Idaho Falls, Idaho, at 8 a. m., Tuesday, May 27. The Grays and Mr. Lepley had just been getting ready to come to

Iowa to visit when he became ill.  Survivors: four daughters,

Mrs. Clarence Gray, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Mrs. George Davis Hornersville, Mo. Mrs. Agnes Wood Lenox; Miss Merle Lepley, of

Cleveland, Ohio; two sons, Roy of Mount Ayr and Lee of Clearfield;

10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

 John Lepley had lived most of his life in Ringgold county near Maloy.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p. m. at the Christian church in Maloy. Rev. Kenneth Israel, grandson by marriage, officiated.  Interment in Oak Ridge cemetery near Maloy.

Madden, Mary Jane Mitchell -

Mrs. Mary Madden 85, died Sunday at 2 p. m. at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cunningham, here.

Born in Terre Haute, Ind., she had lived here about 70 years.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 10 a. m. at the St.

Patrick's church with the Rev. Father Leo Ortman of Creston,

officiating. Burial in St. Patrick's cemetery.

Surviving are five daughters: Mrs. Lizzie Hill, Corning;  Mrs.

Nellie Smith, Hollywood, Calif.; Miss Marcella Madden, Creston;

Mrs. Alice Cunningham and Mrs. Della Boltinghouse, Lenox; one

son, Hugh of Lenox; one brother, Hugh Mitchell of Medford,

Ore., and several grandchildren.

Madden, Mary Jane Mitchell -

Mary Jane Mitchell, daughter of Hugh and Catherine Mitchell

was born in Terra Haute, Indiana, April 2, 1867. While still a

child she moved to Ivesdale, Illinois, with her parents, in 1882

moving to a farm several miles south of Lenox. While living

there, church services were held in the parental home, at .that

time there being no church established.

On March 5 1889, she was united in marriage to Dennis Madden by the Rev. Father Eugene Phelan. The ceremony took place in St. Patrick's little frame church. They made their home four miles east of Lenox, later moving to the Prairie Gem neighborhood. In 1905 they purchased what is now the Herm Beemer farm adjoining Lenox,

making that their home. In 1908 her husband died leaving six small children. In 1919 she moved to her home place where she lived with her son Hugh until the past six months, when she was cared for in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cunningham.

She became seriously ill Sunday morning, May 25, 1952, passing away that afternoon at their home at 2 P. M.

Mary Madden was a life-long member of St. Patrick's Altar Society and was ready to take part in all church activities as long as she was able. She was a fine mother and a good neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand.

Living to mourn her loss are the following children: Mrs. Lizzie Hill, Coming, Iowa; Mrs. Nellie Smith, Hollywood, Calif.; Mrs. Delia Boltinghouse, Lenox, Iowa; Miss Marcella Madden, Creston, Iowa; Mr. Hugh Madden, Lenox, Iowa and Mrs. Frank Cunningham, Lenox, Iowa, besides 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St Patrick's church, May 27 at

10 A. M. conducted by the Rev. Father Leo Ortman of Creston.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Earl Mclntyre, Mr. and Mrs. Art

Schweers and Miss Mary Ann Ford. Pallbearers were John

Nagle Tony Schmitt, Jay Henderson, Chas. Deaver,  Fred House and Leo Ford. Interment at St. Patrick’s cemetery.

Manroe, Mrs. M. C. -

Mrs. Earl Hudson received word last week of the death of

her sister-in-law, Mrs. M. C. Manroe of Sweetwater, Texas.

Mrs. Manroe has been in frail health for several months. Twilight

funeral and burial services were in Sweetwater, July. 3rd,

Mrs. Manroe is survived by her husband.

Marshall, David Henry -

David Henry Marshall passed away May 6, 1952, at Sutter hospital

in Sacramento, Calif., after a brief illness. Mr. Marshall had resided at Kelseyville, Calif., since 1939, when he had moved his family from Lenox.  Mr. Marshall was born Aug. 8 1884 at King City, Mo.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Marshall of Waterloo; two brothers, Roy of Waterloo and Ernest of Liberty, Mo.; one sister, Ivah Gibson, also of Missouri; eight children; Delmar and Mrs. Mary Funk of Kelseyville, Calif.; Mrs. Irene Walker of Finley, Calf.; Mrs. D. Silva and Laverne Marshall of Sacramento, Calif.; Mrs. Frances Long of Fresno, Calif.; and Arthur Dean Marshall, USN. 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.

Funeral services were held on May 9th, with interment in the

Kelseyville cemetery. Mr. Marshall was a farmer and commercial teacher in Lenox for several years.

McNees, Jessie Foster -

Funeral services were held today (Thursday) in Creston for

Mrs. Jessie McNees, 77, with burial there in Graceland cemetery.

Mrs. McNees, who many years ago was a Lenox resident, had.

lived in Creston 55 years, where her husband was a photographer.

Mr. McNees preceded his wife in death in 1949. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Albert M. Snyder of Creston and a brother, B. O. Foster of Des Moines. Mrs. McNees, nee Jessie Foster, was born at Princeton, Ill.., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H O. Foster.

Miller, Gary Wayne -

Graveside services were conducted by Father Adam Reisz

Wednesday morning of last week for Gary Wayne Miller, infant

son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Miller, who died at birth June

24th at the Creston hospital.  Besides his parents, he is survived

by two brothers, Tim and David, and one sister, Susan.
