Bentley, Willard Charles “Bill”

Willard "Bill" Bentley, 81, of Clearfield, formerly of Diagonal, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010 at the Powers Funeral Home at the junction of highways 34 and 25 in Creston.

Pastor Tim Maxa will officiate. Flag presentation will be by the Morris-Herrold American Legion Post #395 of Diagonal. A reception will be held at the funeral home following the service. Willard "Bill" Charles Bentley, son of Orville Leroy Bentley and Velma Edith (Hewitt) Bentley was born September 4, 1928 in Union Co., Iowa. Bill graduated from Diagonal High School in 1945. On June 27, 1948 Bill was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Buck in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. They settled in the Diagonal area where they farmed.

From 1953 to 1955 Bill served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the service, Bill returned to farming in the Diagonal area. In 1983, they retired from farming and opened Mom and Dad's Bar in Diagonal and Willard's Trucking. In 2002, they moved to Clearfield.

Bill was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a 45-year member and past Commander of the Morris Herrold American Legion Post #395 of Diagonal, past Vice Commander of the Iowa Fifth district of the American Legion and past president of Lions Club of Diagonal.

Bill is survived by his wife, Barb of Clearfield; two sons, Billy (wife Joan) Bentley and Jim (wife Laura) Bentley, both of Diagonal; one daughter, Karen (husband Mike) Eblen of Creston; one granddaughter, Kayla Bentley; one sister, Marjorie (husband Keith) Davis of Ames; three brothers-in-law, Roland (wife Jane) Buck of Mt. Ayr, Don (wife Sandy) Buck of Denver, Ia. and Merritt (wife Wilma) Buck of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Carol Lee Bentley of Diagonal and Phyllis Buck of Creston; and several aunts and uncles, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Donald Bentley, father and mother-in-law, Raymond & Dorthy Buck, his brother-in-law, Dick Buck and his sister in-law: Mildred Buck.

Boulden, Roger W. –

Dr. Roger W. Boulden, who practice medicine for 34 years in Lenox, Iowa, passed away April 3, 2011 in Mesa, Arizona at the age of 89.  He was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa on February 20, 1922; the only child of William and Florence Boulden.  He graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska in 1946 and after serving in the Army, he established his practice in Lenox, Iowa in 1940, retiring in 1984.  He was a member of the Lenox American Legion, Rotary Club, served on the Lenox City Council, and belonged to several Medical Associations.  While living in Lenox he was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.  After retirement he lived in Lenox during the summer and Mesa during the winter and he and wife moved to Mesa permanently in 1997.  He is survived by his wife, Betty, married 66 years; three sons; William and wife Diane, Robert and Richard, wife Janice.  He is also survived by 8 grandchildren:  Holly, Carly, Cortney (husband Chris), Whitne, Benjamin, Sarah, Ian, and Rachel (husband Matt).

Betty Naomi Bradley was born September 2, 1926 in Bedford, Iowa to Anna Elaine (Bjork) Hamilton and Leon Ray Hamilton. She graduated from Blockton High School in 1944 and attended college in Maryville, Mo. for one year. Betty was married to Fredrick Bradley for 17 years and later divorced. She spent one year in Des Moines where she welded for Solar Aircraft Company and at Look Magazine, then moved to Kansas City where she lived for 40 years. She also did bookkeeping with a partner for 10 years then various CPA after that. She moved to Iowa in 1990 and has lived in Creston since then.

Survivors include her two brothers: Jim (wife Rosalie) Hamilton of Creston; Edward (wife Delonna) Hamilton of Lenox and seven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Loretta Hamilton Edwards

Paul Vincent Cain, the son of Joseph John and Rose Katherine (Krohmer) Cain, was born on April 6, 1925, in Adams County. Paul lived his entire life in Adams and Taylor Counties near Lenox. He farmed in both Adams and Taylor Counties, as a young man. Paul later trained in Kansas City to be a painter and returned to the area to work for Lencor Manufacturing in Lenox where he painted new farm equipment. Paul also worked as a tractor mechanic at Lenox Implement and retired after 10 years of service. Paul enjoyed reading and read many “Western” novels and liked to read the Reader’s Digest. Paul will be remembered for his easy going spirit and his love for spending time with family and friends.

Mark Steven Cheers was born July 29, 1969 in Creston, Iowa to Edward Lee Crago and Wilma Ilene (Clayton) Crago. He was educated in Creston schools and later received his GED. After finishing school, Mark moved to the Omaha area where he did commercial construction in Omaha for around 7 years and worked with the Union. He moved to Creston, and then in 2007, he moved to Gravity. Mark loved his dog Rock and liked to ride his motorcycle.

Darling, Ronald LaNeil –

Ronald LaNeil Darling, the son of Frank Headley and Phyllis Kathryn (Senteney) Darling, was born on May 17, 1939, in Lyons, Nebraska. Ron entered eternal rest on August 7, 2010, at his home in Clearfield, Iowa, at the age of seventy-one years.

Ron lived in many places while growing up. His family moved from Lyons to Mead, Nebraska as a boy. Ron graduated from New Market High School with the Class of 1959. Ron served in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserves.

Ron was an over the road truck driver for thirty-six years. He lived in Sweeny, Texas for several years; and he lived in Lenox about seven years. Ron has lived in Clearfield the last five years. On October 16, 2004, he married Marlene Fay Zeibig in Clearfield, Iowa.

Ron was a member of the Clearfield American Legion Woodside Post; a member of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association; and a member of the Clearfield Christian Church.

Donald E. Davis, 74, of 2500 23rd Ave., Marion, died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from complications of cancer. He married Joyce Shelton on Aug. 2, 1959, in Jacksonville, Fla. Don was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Crisis. He was employed at Rockwell-Collins for 33 years, retiring in 1992. Don especially enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events and activities. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, tennis, bowling, woodworking, and repairing electronics. Shirley Elaine Goldner, daughter of Virgil Bell and Helen June (Walker) Bell, was born Oct. 17, 1955 in Salem, Mo. She graduated from Salem Senior High School and when on to study at the Metro Business College in Rolla, Mo. in medical transcripting. On July 30, 1988, Shirley married Joe A. Goldner in Macks Creek, Missouri. They lived and worked in Macks Creek. Shirley worked in home health care, for Windsor Estates Nursing Home in Camdenton, Mo. and at the Osage Beach Nursing Home. They moved to the Lenox area in 2001. Shirley helped manage the farm, and did much of the administrative work. At the time of her death, Sse was in the middle of moving back to Missouri. Survivors include her son, Eric Milton of Lenox, her daughter, Erin Milton of Lenox; three sisters, Barbara Jenkins and Arlene (husband Jack) Stanfast, both of Salem, Mo. and Kay (husband Greg) Enke of Lecoma, Mo.; three brothers, Richard (wife Linda) Bell of Lebanon, Mo. Kenneth “Butch” Bell of Licking, Mo. and Timothy Bell of Salem, Mo.; her step-mother-in-law, Roberta Goldner of Creston; her step-sister-in-law, Peggy Van Pelt of Creston, her brother-in-law, Marv (wife Kathy) Goldner of St. Louis, Mo., and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her two dogs, Sally Ann and Pogo.

Sharon Kay Kessler, the daughter of Leonard Cecil and Virginia E. (Oshel) Bubb, was born on December 1, 1940, in Lenox, Iowa. Sharon entered eternal rest on September 20, 2010, at Taylor House Hospice, Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of sixty-nine years.

Sharon lived most of her life in Creston. She moved to Runnells about six years ago. Sharon was married to Gerald Erskine for twelve years and they divorced. She later married Dale Kessler. Sharon was a homemaker.

Sharon was a member of the First Christian Church. She was a member of a wildlife organization; and she loved to travel, camp, and go out and look for deer. Sharon wrote poems and letters and loved spending time with her family.

David Mercer was born July 25, 1951 in Creston to Gladys Evelyn (Smejdir) Mercer and John Mercer. He graduated from Creston High School and was drafted into the US Army. After returning from the military, he began farming in Adams County near Lenox and worked at the Creston Livestock Auction.

David is survived by his mother: Gladys Mercer Schofield of rural Lenox, one sister: Marilyn (husband John) Anderson of Iowa City; two nephews: Patrick and Robert Anderson. He was preceded in death by his father: John Mercer; step-father: Roy Schofield and his nephew: James Anderson.

Dorothy Annie (Dahlberg) Pershin, daughter of Floyd Harrison Dahlberg and Carrie Annie Butler was born April 8, 1921 in Adams Co., Iowa. Dorothy graduated from Lenox High School in 1939. On June 8, 1939 Dorothy was united in marriage to Forest Mack Pershin at the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Mt. Ayr. She was a lifelong homemaker and farmwife. Dorothy and Mack lived northwest of Lenox in Adams Co. until moving into Lenox in 1953. In 1955 they returned to a farm south of Lenox. They retired in 1975 and moved to Creston where she currently resided.

Dorothy is survived by; one son, F. Micheal (wife Linda) Pershin of Creston; one daughter, Judith A. (husband Raymond) Rios of Clearfield; two grandchildren, Pamela Marie (husband Brent) Strabala of West Branch, Iowa and Rhonda Rios of Huntington Beach, Calif.; three great grandchildren, Alexa Ray Beazer and Rex Forrest Beazer a and Fern Strabala; one sister in-law, Lela Dukes of Ellston. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mack in 2006; two sisters, Alice Reynolds and Ruby Bush; two brothers in-law, Bob Reynolds and Lowell Bush.

Renae Lynn (Dieger) Scott, daughter of William “Bill” and Shirley Dieger, was born on July 31, 1957 in Belmond, Iowa. Renae entered eternal rest on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at her home in Clearfield, Iowa at the age of fifty-three years, two months and twenty-eight days.

Renae attended Belmond High School and was a graduate with the Class of ’76. Renae furthered her education and became a certified nursing aide and worked for Nurse Force in Des Moines for several years providing in home health care. Later, Renae moved to Corning and began working at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Lenox.

On September 1, 2008, Renae was united in marriage to Larry Scott in Las Vegas. The couple moved to rural Clearfield eleven months ago.

Renae loved spending time outdoors. She had an amazing collection of unicorns and bells which she was very proud of.

Ervin Ray Spencer was born September 29, 1917 in Caledonia, Iowa to Dora (Pyle) Spencer and Samuel Owen Spencer. He was educated in Ringgold Co. Schools. On June 24, 1939, he was united in marriage to Roberta Guess. Roberta died in 1955. On February 16, 1956, Ervin married Ella May (Carter) Cole in Omaha, Neb. and they made their home in the Newton and Colfax areas, where he managed the Newton Maytag Dairy and operated a maintainer for 17 years for Jasper County. In the mid-90s, they moved to Lenox, and in 2002, they moved to the Des Moines area. Ervin was a member of the Easton Baptist Church in Des Moines and formerly a member of Crest Baptist Church in Creston.

Survivors include his four daughters: Joyce (husband Bill) Foster of Estancia, N.M., Karla (husband Randy) Risher of El Dorado, Ark., Donna (husband Cal) Brown of Indianola, Ia. and Carrie Ann (husband John) Hays of Radcliffe, Ky.; two sons: Chuck (wife Marvis) Cole of Jolley, Ia. and Bill (wife Sondra) Cole of Anton, Texas.; two sons-in law: Robert Anthony of Des Moines, Ia. and Lewis McLead of Altoona, Ia.; 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Roberta, second wife Ella in 2008; two daughters: Ella Lee Anthony and Mary Lou McLead; a grandson: Ray Cole, and all of his brothers and sisters.

Walter, Dorothy Marie Harvey –

Dorothy Marie Walter, the daughter of Ralph Edward and Hila Arlene (Lucas) Harvey, was born on September 5, 1930 in Taylor County, Iowa near Iveyville. Dorothy entered eternal rest on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Alegent Health Hospice of Southwest Iowa at the age of seventy-nine years, nine months and twenty-four days.

Dorothy graduated from Corning High School with the Class of 1948. On September 12, 1948, Dorothy was united in marriage to James Junior Walter at the Mt. Zion Church southwest of Brooks and three sons were born to bless this union: Doug, David and Randy. The loving couple celebrated sixty-one years of marriage last September.

Dorothy worked at Hy-Vee from 1972 until her retirement in 1998. In 2000, she went to work for the Corning Meat Locker. Jim and Dorothy also owned and operated Jim’s Greenhouse in Corning for fifteen years.

Dorothy belonged to the K.K. Neighborhood Club and was a member of a square dance club in Corning. She loved to go to sale auctions which helped her build her collection of over 2400 salt & pepper shaker sets from forty-eight states and seventeen countries. Dorothy enjoyed visits from her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed the public and loved people. Her love of sports was evident with her fondness of both college and professional football teams.

Left to cherish Dorothys’ memory is her husband, Jim Walter of Corning; sons: Doug (Janice) Walter of Altoona, Iowa, David L. Walter, Wilma Mary Williams -

Wilma Mary (Williams) Walter, daughter of John and Myrtle Williams, was born on October 1, 1919 in Taylor County near Guss, Iowa. Wilma entered eternal rest on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of ninety years.

Wilma attended country school and Villisca Community School. After high school, Wilma earned a Cosmetology Degree from cosmetology school in Des Moines.

Wilma married Albert Hunter and daughter Karen was born to that union. They later divorced. Wilma was united in marriage to Harold Eugene Walter on October 1, 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska and two children were born, Marcia and Roger.

After their marriage the couple lived in Villisca where Wilma owned and operated a beauty salon. In 1949, the couple began farming in Adams County. Harold and Wilma lived on a couple of other farms prior to the purchase of their current farm in 1956. Wilma started a beauty shop at home shortly after moving to their farm northeast of Prescott and had a successful business for many years.

Wilma was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #719 and the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #1797. She was a former member of the Quilting Club at the Prescott United Church. Wilma loved to do handwork and over the years made many things that she crocheted and knitted, projects both large and small. Wilma loved to go camping, fishing and dancing. She enjoyed dining out at different places and liked to play cards.

Left to cherish Wilma’s memory is her husband, Harold Walter of Prescott; daughter, Marcia (Gary) Almquist of Montgomery, TX; son, Roger Walter and special friend, Tammy Kammerer of Brooks; six grandchildren: John, Kathy, Rita, Doug, Brian and Troy; several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Karen Russell; son-in-law, Boyd Russell; granddaughter-in-law, Debbie Russell and two sisters: Ruth Holmes and Opal Gray.
