GRAVESIDE SERVICES HELD IN CONWAY FOR HAROLD CUNNINGHAM

Graveside services for Harold Cunningham, 56, of Council Bluffs, were held at the Conway cemetery Aug. 24. Mr. Cunningham died Aug. 21 at Mercy hospital in Council Bluffs after undergoing surgery Wednesday. He had been in poor health for some time.

Mr. Cunningham is survived by his wife, Jessie, a son George; a daughter, Mrs. James (Joyce) Mikesell; five grandchildren, all of Council Bluffs; his mother, Mrs. Iva Cunningham of New Market.

He was reared in    Taylor County, attended    Morning Star School in Mason Township, and graduated from the Bedford High School. He attended    college at    Tarkio, Mo., and had lived at Council Bluffs for 23 years. He was employed by Alamito Dairy.

His    father, Miles    Cunningham, preceded him in death.

Quietly Passed Away

Judge Dale Died at His Home in Polk Township Yesterday

The old settlers of Nodaway County, Missouri, and Taylor County, Iowa, have known Judge P.[hillip]  Dale for a number of years.  The fact is he was quite a prominent figure among the early settlers of the district. Of late he has been living on his farm in Polk Township.  For several years his health has been quite poorly, and he has been a great sufferer at times. Yesterday he quietly passed away at his home, leaving many friends to mourn his departure.

Final Rites Held Here For James M. Glass

Funeral services for James Mallieu Glass, well-known Taylor County resident, were held August 22 at the State Street   Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. John D. Kerr. Mr. Glass died Aug. 19, 1965 at Clarinda Municipal hospital at the age of 77 years, nine months and seven days. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Included   in the   services was the following obituary.

James Mallieu Glass, son of Franklin and Mary Newberry Glass, was born Nov. 12, 1887 in Lee county, Virginia.

He was   married to   Nora Ellen Baker on Oct. 15, 1912.

To this union were born seven children: Henry and Donald of Bedford, Palmer and Ray of Moses Lake, Wash.; three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Miers, Clarinda, Ia., Mrs. Mary Miers, Gravity, Ia., and Mrs. Pauline McCune, Bedford; a niece, Mrs. Thelma Yeary of Rose Hill, Va., was also raised in the home.

As a young man he united with the Methodist Church in Lee County, Va., and later transferred his membership to the Methodist Church in Bedford.

With his wife and children he moved to Missouri in 1924, and later moved to Page and Taylor counties in Iowa, where he spent the remainder of his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Ellen, his parents, six sisters and one brother.

He later married Mrs. Bertha Johnson of Kyles Ford, Tenn., who survives him.

He is survived by seven children, 23 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. H. F. Watson and Mrs. W. W. Elkins of Jonesville, Va.; three stepchildren, Jack Johnson, Kyles Ford, Tenn., Mrs. Emmer Kinsler of Blackwater, Va., and Mrs. Irene Ford, Palm Beach, Fla.

His later   life was   spent enjoying his family and the out-of-doors.    He   wi1l be greatly missed   by a host of relatives and friends.

Bill Hoffman Rites April 12

Funeral services for William Henry (Bill) Hoffman, 77, of Blockton, held April 12 at Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Bobby Pinkerton, pastor of the Blockton Baptist Church. Mr. Hoffman died at his home April 8. Interment was at Shenandoah Cemetery, Shenandoah, Iowa

William Henry (Bill) Hoffman, son of Henry and Rebecca Hoffman, was born in Siam, Iowa, Feb. 11, 1888.

In 1912 he was married to Ethel Godell. To this union nine children were born: Iva Rebecca who died in infancy; Cora Lavada French, Sacramento, Calif.; Thomas E. Hoffman, Carmichael, Calif.; Richard C. Hoffman, Sacramento, Calif.; Wanda M. Munson, Hopkins, Mo.; William D. Hoffman, Brodrick, Calif.; Mae I. Colter (address unknown); Walter L. Hoffman, Kimball, Nebr.; Leslie E. Hoffman, U.S. Navy in the Azores.

In 1945 he was married to Mrs. Marie Kalkas and to this union one daughter, Carina Jean Lawrence of Blockton, was born.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, nine children, two step-children, Willard Kalkas of Shenandoah and Rachael Kalkas of Kimball, Nebr.; 21 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends.

Harold Mohler Services Tues.

Funeral services for Harold Mohler, 60, lifetime Taylor County resident, were held Tuesday, August 31 at Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Ivo Randels. Mr. Mohler died Sunday, August 29, 1965, at his home in Gravity. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

John Harold Mohler, only son of John and Sarah Mohler, was born Oct. 7, 1904, on a farm five miles northeast of Bedford.

He spent his entire life on the farm where he was born until four   years ago   when he and his wife   and daughter moved to Gravity, Ia.

He was united in marriage to Nora Knox of Lenox, Ia., July 31, 1950. To this union one daughter, Arlene Marie, was born. He was preceded in death by his wife Nora who passed away June 28, 1964.

He lived with his father and mother on their farm and cared for them until their death.

After the death of his wife, he and his daughter continued to live in their home in Gravity, Ia.

The past several years he has been assistant custodian at the Lake of Three Fires.

Those who survive him are, his daughter Arlene; two sisters, Mrs. Archie (Hal-lie) Laub, and Mrs. Glenn (Hazel) Brown, both of Bedford; one niece, one nephew, one uncle, several cousins, and many, many friends.

He will be greatly missed in the community where he has lived all his life. He was deeply attached to his family, honest, hard-working, reserved but yet friendly with all. He packed a lot of good living in a rather short span of life.

Mrs. G. Roberts Rites April 21

Funeral services for Mrs. George Roberts, 87, a long time resident of Taylor County, were held April 21 at the Gravity Christian Church with Rev. James Sheckler officiating. Mrs. Roberts died at the Pugh Nursing home in Clarinda April 18. Interment was at the Gravity Cemetery.

Mrs. Edna Walker Roberts was the daughter of Arthur Miles and Nannie Harlan Walker.

She was married to George Roberts on April 16, 1902. Their home was on a farm in the Gravity vicinity where Mr. Roberts farmed until his death in 1942.

After his death she made her home in Gravity where she was a member of the Christian church and active in all church activities as long as her health would permit.

She lived for several years in the home of her sister, the late Blanche Walker in Clarinda. For the past few years she had been an invalid, being cared for at the Pugh Nursing Home

Funeral services for Satin Lorene Sands, the infant daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Sands, of Bedford were held Wed., July 21, at the Williams Memorial Chapel in Clarinda with graveside services at the Clarinda Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Gilbert, pastor of the Baptist Church, was the officiating clergyman.

In addition to her parents the baby is survived by her grandparents, Mr, and Mrs. Carl Perry of Bedford; Mr. and Mrs. James A. Sands of Bedford; three great grandmothers, Mrs. Ethel Musick of Sheridan, Mrs. C. A. Perry of College Springs, Ia., and Mrs. Cyrus Peters of Pickering, Mo.

JOHN G. SAWYER, 83, DIED AT HOME MAY 10

Funeral services for John G. [ordon] Sawyer, 83, were held Sunday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at the Shum Funeral Home, with Rev. Fred H. Cowles of the Baptist church officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Masonic graveside services were conducted by members of Taylor Lodge No. 156.

John Gordon Sawyer, second son of Nathan S. [mith] and Sarah Kenyon Sawyer, was born Sept. 22, 1872 at Manchester, Iowa, and died at his home in Bedford, Iowa, Thursday, May 10, 1956 aged 83 years, seven months and 18 days. His father, mother and two brothers, Melvin A. and Clesson G. preceded him in death.

In early childhood he moved to Bedford where he grew to manhood, receiving his training in merchandising in the firms of Parker, Dale & Co., Jake Cole, Court Orth, and Weaver's. He later was employed by the John S. Brittain Co. of St. Joseph until he entered the employ of Tootle-Campbell Dry Goods Co., in St. Joseph, as one of the original salesmen when the firm was founded. He remained with the Tootle Company for nearly 36 years, retiring about 15 years ago.

On Sept. 9, 1902, he was married at Bedford to Maude Whittington and to them were born two sons, Halbert W. [hittington], who died at the age or 4 1/2   months, and Maurees K. [enyon], who, with his family and the widow survive.

Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer moved to Oxford, Nebraska in 1907 where they resided for 35 years before retuning to Bedford.

Early in his life he united with the Christian church in Bedford. He was a member of Rawalt Lodge A. F. & A. M. in Oxford, Nebraska.

Maude Sawyer Final Rites Here Tuesday

Funeral, services for Mrs. John (Maude E.)   Sawyer of Bedford held Tuesday, April 20, at the east   Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Leonard Wilson.    Mrs. Sawyer   died Sunday, April 18, 1965    at Clarinda, Iowa, Municipal Hospital, being   90    years, eight months and 17 days of age. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Maude E. Sawyer, eldest daughter of Rees L. [ittleton] and Martha [Ellen] Connor [Conner] Whittington, was born July 31, 1874 at Indianapolis, Indiana. She came, with the family, to Iowa in 1882 where they settled on a farm 1 1/2 miles east of Bedford from where she attended the Bedford Public School.

She joined the Bedford Baptist Church on Jan. 6, 1888, later transferred her membership to Oxford, Nebraska, then returned it to Bedford 10 years ago.

As a young woman she purchased and operated a retail millinery store in Hopkins, Mo., before returning to Bedford where, on Sept. 9, 1902, she was married in the Baptist Church to John G. [ordon] Sawyer. Theirs was the first marriage solemnized in the church, which was then a newly built structure.

To them were born two sons, Halbert W. [hittington], who died in infancy, and Maurees K.[enyon], who survives.

The family moved to Oxford, Nebr. in 1907 where Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer resided until September 1942, when they returned to Bedford. Here Mr. Sawyer died on May 10, 1956.

She was a member of Chapter AF of PEO at Oxford, retaining her membership there. A few years ago she received her 50-year affiliate certificate.

Surviving are her son and his wife, Vivian; a sister, Mrs. Hallie Beck and her husband, Francis; eight grandchildren, Mrs. James (Elise) Tranbarger, Sumner, Ia., John G. Sawyer, Bartlesville, Okla., William E. Sawyer, Lenox, Mrs, James (Kay) Dinsmoor, Bloomington, Ind., Charles H. Sawyer, Thornton, Ia., Mrs. Lowell (Sondra) Parman, Independence, Ia., Robert N. Sawyer, Laramie, Wyo. and Tom W. Sawyer, Littlefieid, Tex., and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Charles Starkey residing about a quarter of a mile west of Conway, died on Friday last of erysipelas, after a week's illness, and was buried on Saturday. Mr. Starkey was about thirty-five years of age and had lived in the county for about twenty-three years. He served with credit during the war in Capt. Parke's company of cavalry and lost an arm in the service. His father died just two weeks before.

ANDY WALTER, 87, DIES IN LENOX

Funeral services for Andy [Andrew Arthur] Walter, 87, of Lenox were held Monday, Aug. 30, at the Lenox Methodist Church. Mr. Walter died Aug. 28 at the Lenox Nursing home. Interment was at the Lenox Cemetery.

Mr. Walter, a retired farmer, was born on a farm near Lenox.

He is survived by has wife, Jennie, of Des Moines; three sons, Glendon, of Prescott, Lonnie and Homer, of Lenox; a daughter, Mrs. Esther Wadell, of Exira; one step son, Dick Preston, of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; two brothers, Ben, and Lewis, of Lenox; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Pierce, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Maleta Ely, of San Diego, Calif.

Mrs. R.L. Whittington Died Here Monday

Mrs. R. [ees] L. [ittleton] Whittington, a resident of Bedford and community for more than half a century, died at her home Monday, March 22, after a few days illness.

The funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home this afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Hogue. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Mattie E. [llen] Conner, daughter of Capt. Thomas R. and Susan E. Conner, was born March 13, 1852 near Rose Hill, Mahaska county, Iowa, and departed this life Monday, March 22, 1937 at the age of 85 years and 9 days.

When she was 12 years of age her father died in the battle of Jenkins Ferry, Ark. Her mother lived but six months after the news of his death was brought to the family. She then went to live with an aunt, Mrs. Robert Bass, and later with her guardian, Judge Rinehart in Oskaloosa.

In 1873 she went to Indiana to visit relatives where she met and was married to Rees L. [ittleton] Whittington on July 2. To this union were born two daughters, Maude and Hallie, both of whom, together with the husband and father, survive her. She also leaves a grandson, six great grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.

Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Whittington went to Jamestown, Ind., and then to Indianapolis where they made their home. Later they moved to Reelsville, Ind., and from there to a farm near Crawfordsville, Ind.

In 1882 they moved to Iowa where they resided on a farm one and a half miles east of Bedford, a homestead which they yet own. In 1892 they moved to Bedford where they resided until 1906. They then returned to a farm a half-mile east of Bedford where they resided until 1910 when they removed to Bedford where they have since resided.

Mrs. Whittington united with the First Baptist church in Bedford in 1888 and has been faithful in its membership and teachings ever since.

Mrs. Whittington Dies of Pneumonia

Mrs. R. [ees] L. [ittleton] Whittington [Martha Ellen Conner], 85, a resident of Bedford for 55 years, died suddenly at heir home, 902 Madison street, Monday evening after an illness of less than one week's duration.

Death was attributed to the infirmities of old age and pneumonia.

She leaves her aged husband; two daughters, Mrs. J. [ohn] G. [ordon] Sawyer [Maude], Oxford, Nebraska, and Mrs. C.[harles] A. Hall [Hallie] of Bedford; a grandson and six great-grandchildren, together with several nieces and nephews.

Rites were held this afternoon from the Walker and Shum funeral home, conducted by the Rev. W. H. Hogue. Interment was in Fairview.

Rites were Thursday, March 25 from the Walker and Shum Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. W. H. Hogue. Interment was in Fairview.

Rees L. Whittington

Rees Littleton Whittington, eldest son of William and Rebecca Jane Whittington, was born at Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana, February 28, 1850 and died at his home in Bedford, Taylor county, Iowa, Sunday, July 27, 1941, aged 91 years, 4 months and 29 days.

He was educated in the public schools of Montgomery County where, some years later, he taught school, met and was married to Martha Ellen Connor [Conner], who preceded him in death.

To them were born two daughters, Maude and Hallie, the latter of whom has been his constant companion during the declining years of his life.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Whittington continued to reside in Indiana, where Mr. Whittington was engaged in various phases of business including livestock sales, the livery trade and later in the wholesale hardware business at Indianapolis.  At one time he, in partnership with an uncle, owned and operated the Indianapolis street railway system.

The family moved to Taylor County, near Bedford, in 1882 where he had continued his residence more than a half-century. A member of the Freedom church in Indiana, he transferred his membership to the Bedford Baptist church and has continued his church affiliation therein.

Surviving are his two daughters, Mrs. J. [ohn] G. [ordon] Sawyer [Maude] of Oxford, Nebr., and Hallie Whittington of Bedford; one grandson; seven great-grandchildren; his youngest brother, Walter Whittington of Akron, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Abbie Deer of Shelbyville, Indiana, together with several nieces and nephews.

The funeral services were held at the Walker & Shum Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.
