Mrs. Anna Churchill Dies

Mrs. Anna Churchill died at her home in Gravity Thursday morning. She had been in poor health for many months. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Christian church in Gravity conducted by the Rev. Benj. R. Hollis of Bedford. Interment in Gravity cemetery.

Obituary - Mrs. Georgia Churchill

Georgia Ann Robey, daughter of Thornton William and Sarah A. Clark Robey, was born in Peoria, Ill., Sept. 18, 1869 and died at her home in Gravity, March 6, 1954 at the age of 84 years, five months, 16 days. She was one of a family of seven children.

She came to Iowa at the age of three with her parents to the farm home two and a half miles east of Gravity that is still in the Robey family.

She was married to Andrew Eugene Churchill In January 1884. He preceded her in death in 1932. To them were born six children. Two daughters, Osa and Edna Mae preceded their mother in death. Mrs. Churchill was one of the pioneers of Gravity. She started her married life just across the street from her present home, where she moved when they left the farm in 1920. The old farm home has been owned by the family for more than sixty years and is now operated by one of the grandchildren.

Those left to mourn her death are three sons: Ora Churchill and Elmer Churchill of Gravity; Clarence Churchill of Sharpsburg; one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Besco of Clarks Grove, Minn.; one brother, Adolph A. (Doc) Robey of Gravity; 24 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren.

Belle Gloshen, 89, Final Rites Were Held July 17

Funeral services for Mrs. Al William (Delana Belle) Gloshen, 89, of Buffalo, Mo., held July 17 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Pastor Mel Smith. Mrs. Gloshen died July 15, 1983 in Springfield General Hospital, Springfield, Mo. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.

Delana Belle Gloshen, daughter of John George Joslyn and Emiline [Emmaline May Severns] Joslyn, was born in Taylor County, Iowa on May 26, 1894. She lived in Taylor, Page and Adams counties and grew to maturity in Taylor County where she attended public school.

Belle was united in marriage to [Henry] Clinton Keeler. To this union three children were born: two sons: Hubert and [Ellsworth] Carroll and one daughter, Laven, all of whom have preceded her in death; also one grandson.

She and Al William Gloshen were married August 25, 1935. To this union one daughter, Ann, was born.

Belle was a mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Buffalo, Mo.

Left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Ann Gloshen Brown Briley of Buffalo, Mo.; a brother, Fred Joslyn of California; 26 grandchildren many great grandchildren; numerous great great grandchildren; and many other relatives.

Mrs. Gloshen was a thoughtful mother and grandmother and will be missed by her loving family and friends.

GRAVITY—Mrs. Guy Joslyn [Edna Mae Churchill], 63, passed away last Friday morning at the home of her mother, Mrs. Gene Churchill of Gravity. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Christian church and burial was in the Gravity cemetery.

Obituary - Mrs. Guy Joslyn

Edna Mae Churchill, was born November 23, 1886, and died Sept. 15, 1950 at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 22 days.

She was born in Gravity and died at the home of her mother, Mrs. G. [eorgia] A. [nn Robey] Churchill in Gravity.

She united with the Advent church of Gravity when a young girl.

On Feb. 22, 1904 she was married to Guy Joslyn of Gravity and to them were born six children: two sons, Elvin Elmer and Merle Alden died in infancy. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Jakie Green of Blockton, Opal Pitman of Gravity, Marion Joslyn of Shenandoah, Donnie Wade of Gravity; eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. G. [eorgia] A. [nn] Churchill, three brothers, Orie, Elmer and Clarence of Gravity; one sister, Mrs. Howard Besco of Clarks Grove, Minn.

In 1937 she joined the Rebekah Lodge. Her loving care of her grandchildren, Penny and Micke Pitman, whom she raised as her own, will never be forgotten.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Gravity, Sept. 17, conducted by Rev. G. W. Swan of Blockton, assisted by Rev. Walter Thompson. Rebekah service was held at the grave, with burial in Gravity cemetery.

OBITUARY

John J. [George] Joslyn, 87, died at the home of his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ike McNutt, south of Bedford, Saturday, January 16, 1943.

The funeral services were held at the Walker & Shum Funeral Home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H Hallgrimson. Burial was in the Gravity cemetery.

John J. [George] Joslyn, son of Harrison and Matilda Mann Joslyn, was born in Jones County, Iowa, September 9, 1855, being aged 87 years, 4 months and 7 days at the time of his death.

He came to Taylor County in 1871. On December 25, 1880, he was married to Emmaline [May] Severns. To them were born seven children, one of whom, Mrs. Beulah Newberg, died in 1918. Mrs. Joslyn died in 1901. The surviving children are Guy Joslyn of Gravity, Hattie McNutt of Blockton, Jessie McNutt of Bedford, Nellie Winger and Fred Joslyn of Clarinda and Belle Gloshen of Prole, Iowa.

Surviving with the children are one sister, Mrs. Sarah Baker of Hawleyville; a half-sister, Mrs. Mary Givens of Hawleyville, a half-brother George Hodge of the state of Oregon; 29 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

In early life he united with the Adventist church and remained a faithful adherent of that faith through life.

Obituary  

Robert Alexander Long, better known as Bobby, son of Ralph and Wilma Long, was born on October 30,1936, in St. Joseph, Missouri, and departed this life on Sunday, May 13, 1945, at the Missouri Methodist hospital, St. Joseph, Mo., after a brief illness of only a few hours.

His father preceded him in death on October 4, 1938. Since that time he has made his home with his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Bill Fulton, who loved him as their own.

Bobby's friends often called him "Sunshine" because of his sweet and sunny disposition. His unselfishness made him consider everyone's wishes before his own. Bobby always said, "God will take care of everything."

He leaves to mourn his loss, his mother, his brother Billy, grandparents, Mr and Mrs Bill Fulton, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.

A precious one from us is gone

A voice we loved is stilled

A place is vacant in our home

Which never can be filled.

The funeral   was held in the Christian church here, Wednesday afternoon of last week, conducted    by   the   Rev.    Walter Purdy, pastor of the church.

The music was by Mrs O. C. Posten and Miss Dorothy Lewis, singers, with Mrs Claude Gray as piano accompanist.

The pallbearers were four boys—Merlyn Harland, Bob Swan, Francis Akers, Duane Bradley.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr and Mrs. Lloyd Roush, Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Operation Is Fatal To Robert A. Long, 8

Robert Alexander Long, 8-year-old son of Mrs. Wilma Long of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday afternoon, following an operation at the Missouri Methodist hospital in St. Joseph, Mo.

Robert has made his home with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Fulton of Gravity.  His mother is a nurse in St. Joseph and had come to Gravity Sunday---on Mother’s Day.  Robert was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph, where he died that afternoon.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Gravity Christian church, conducted by the Rev. W. A. Purdy. Interment was in Dallas cemetery, north of New Market.

Robert Alexander Long Dies

Robert Alexander Long, son of Ralph and Wilma Long, was born Oct. 30, 1936, at St. Joseph, Mo., and passed away on Sunday, May 13, 1945. His father preceded him in death Oct. 4, 1938. Harry Peterman, 84, Last Rites Were Held October 2

Funeral services for Harry Elmer Peterman, 84, of Gravity, were held October 2 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford conducted by Carl Cummings. Mr. Peterman died September 29, 1978, In Coin, Iowa. Gravity American Legion Post extended Military Honors at Dallas Center Cemetery, near New Market, Ia.

Harry Elmer Peterman, son of Edward and Effie Taylor Peterman, was born at New Market, Iowa, on June 5, 1894. He grew to maturity in the New Market area where he attended the public schools.

On March 21, 1929, he was united in marriage to Opal Harland at Corning, Iowa, and they lived in Gravity, Iowa, where he followed the occupation of a carpenter. Six children were born to bless their home and to share their love.

He served his country during World War I and was a member of the Gravity American Legion for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Opal who died Sept. 10, 1967, his parents and three brothers.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Velma Stokes and her husband, Eugene, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Harl E. Peterman and his wife, Matilda, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sylvia Spangler and her husband James of Shenandoah, Iowa, Iva Stokes and her husband Dannie of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Lois Blake and her husband, Gilbert, of Gravity, Iowa, Alfred Peterman and his wife, Charlotte, of Coin, Iowa; two brothers, James Peterman and his wife, Charlotte, of Coin, brothers, James Peterman of Twisp, Wash, and Finley Peterman of Newport, Oregon; one sister, Mrs. Dallas Howes, of Bedford, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; friends.

His family and friends will remember him as a kind and considerate loved one and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mrs. H. Peterman Rites in Gravity

Funeral services for Mrs. Harry (Opal) Peterman long time Gravity resident were held at the Gravity Christian Church September 14 with Rev. Ivo Randels officiating. Mrs. Peterman died at University Hospitals in Iowa City September 10, 1967. Interment was at Dallas Cemetery New Market.

Opal Waive Peterman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Harland, was born at New Market, Ia. She spent most of her life in the Gravity community.

She was married to Harry E. [lmer] Peterman March 20, 1929 and to this union six children were born. They are: Mrs. Velma Stokes of Council Bluffs, Ia.; Harle E. Peterman of Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.; Mrs. Sylvia Spangler of Shenandoah, Ia.; Mrs. Iva T. Stokes of Omaha, Nebr.; Mrs. Lois A. Blake and Alfred D. Peterman of Gravity.

Those who survive in addition to the children named above; her husband Harry E. [lmer] Peterman; seven sisters and four brothers: Alva Lee Harland of Knoxville, Ia.; Mrs. Viola Robinson of Gravity; Mrs. Pearl Lottridge of Lincoln, Nebr.; Mrs. Edna Collins of New Market; Albert Harland of Gravity; Ivan Harland of Norwalk, Ia.; Mrs. Ina Anderson of Stockton, Calif.; Mrs. Vera McClerg of Glenwood, Ia.; Mrs. Neva Ross of Braggs, Okla.; Elvin Harland of Wichita, Kans.; 17 grandchildren, nieces; nephews; cousins; and a large number of friends and neighbors.

She was a devoted wife and mother whose every thought was for the care and comfort of her family. She was a person who never quarreled with anyone. She was a lover of flowers and spent much time in their care and cultivation, which is symbolic of the flowers of kindness that grew in her soul.

Dallas Doings.

J. [ames] M. Remick, one of the oldest settlers in these parts, died on the 19th instant of paralysis. Mr. Remick came to Taylor County when it was a western wild. At the time of his death he lived just across the line in Page County. He laid out the town of Memory and his interests have been identified with Taylor County from its organization. He was a consistent member of the M. E. church, and for a number of years has been superintendent of the Sabbath school at Memory.

Death of Mrs. Roby.

Wednesday, November 14, Mrs. Sarah [Clark] Roby [Robey] died at her home seven miles north of Bedford, at the age of 65 years. She was an old resident of Taylor County. Four sons and a daughter survive her. The funeral services were conducted at the home by an Advent minister of Prescott. Interment in Holt cemetery.

Mrs. Snodgrass Rites Sept 15

Funeral services for Mrs. Roy (Ellen) Snodgrass, 83, of New Market were held September 15 at the Church of Christ in New Market. Mrs. Snodgrass died at a Clarinda Rest Home September 12, 1967. Interment was at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Ellen Emmaline Thomas, daughter of John and Elizabeth Thomas, was born in Corning, Iowa August 6, 1884. She attended Corning Public Schools.

On April 29, 1899 she was married to George Marsh at Corning. He passed away October 23, 1946. Two children were born to this union: Bryon, who passed away February 18, 1946, and Kitty Steadman of Corning.

On August 22, 1958 she was married to Roy Snodgrass, who survives, with her daughter, Kitty Steadman, of Corning. Other survivors include six grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

She was a member of the New Market Church of Christ.

Mrs. Orin Winslow, 59, of Gravity, died in Municipal hospital at Clarinda about six p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17 after a few hours illness.

Funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Wilbur G. Travis of the Bedford Christian church. Burial in Conway cemetery.

Mrs. Winslow is survived by her husband; two daughters and a son, Mrs. Maida Norgate of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Zelah Kahn of San Diego, Calif., Max Winslow of Lincoln, Nebr. There are also ten grandchildren.

Mrs. Orin Winslow suffered a stroke Saturday morning. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital at Clarinda but died Saturday evening.

Obituary - Mrs. Orin Winslow

Audrey Ann Norton, daughter of Sam and Eliza Wood Norton, was born August 4, 1897 near Conway, Iowa and died November 17, 1956.

On October 25, 1916 she was married to Orin L. Winslow. To them three children were born, all of whom survive. They are two daughters, Mrs. Maida Norgate of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Zelah Kahn of San Diego, Calif., and a son, Max R. Winslow of Lincoln, Nebr.

As a young woman she was baptized into the Christian church at Conway.

She had been a resident of Taylor County all her life and had resided in Gravity the past 12 years. One sister, Mrs. Jesse    Winslow, preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn her passing: ten grandchildren; four brothers, Arval Norton of Conway, John Norton of Hopkins, George Norton of Bedford, Dave Norton of Thayer, Iowa; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Winslow of Sharpsburg, Mrs. Ina Healy of Grand River, Mrs. Helen Glover of Clarinda.
