Mrs. Orval Allen Taylor native

DALLAS TWP — Mrs. Orval (Ruby) [Pearl] Allen, 72, who has been living alone northeast of New Market since her husband's death in 1963, was found dead in her home May 29 by her daughter, Mrs. Clark (Lucille) Miller and husband of Red Oak. She was born in Dallas Township, Taylor County, to Mr. and Mrs. Edward [James] Glover [Iva Alice Stickelman]. Her mother died a few weeks ago and a son preceded her in death in 1972.

Funeral services were at the Novinger Funeral home in Bedford on Thursday with Carl Cummings officiating. Music was by Mrs. Mildred Stacey and Rodney Gold. Pallbearers were John   Dean   McNeese, Robert Strough, Roger Davison, Francis Henderson, George   John   and Harmon Mothershead.

Last Rites Held June 3 for Ruby Allen, 71

Funeral services for Mrs. Orval T. (Ruby) Allen, 72, of Gravity were held June 3 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs. Allen died at her home near Gravity May 29, 1976. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Ruby Pearl Glover Allen, daughter of Edward James and Iva Alice Glover, was born at Siam, Iowa, February 22, 1904.

She grew to maturity in the Siam community where she attended the public schools and the Christian Church.

On February 26, 1922, she was united in marriage to Orval Troy Allen at Siam, Iowa, and they lived in Taylor County where they engaged in farming.

To this union two children were born: Iva Lucile and Edward James.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orval T. Allen, who passed away December 26, 1963; her father, Edward J. Glover, who died in September 1964 and her mother who died April 1976; and her son, Edward James Allen, who died May 12, 1972.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lucile Miller and her husband, Clark Miller of Red Oak, Ia.; two grandchildren, Allen Clark Miller of Des Plaines, Ill., and Lana Sue Miller of Lincoln, Nebr., two great grandchildren, Kelly Kristine Miller and Gregory Allen Miller; a brother, Marvin Gale Glover and family of Toronto, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Allen of Hopkins, Mo.; a niece, Mrs. Willard Severn of Oxnard, Calf.; a nephew, Frederick Glover, of Bedford; great aunts, Nellie E. Cobb and Lonesa Bradley, both of Bedford; other relatives and many friends.

She was a member of the Christian Church, New Market, Ia.

She was a kind and considerate mother and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Miss Bix active in church work

SIAM — Miss Ella Blanche Bix, 85, native of this community who spent her life serving others, died New Year's morning at the Gillespie Nursing Home where she had lived for two years.

Services were being held this Thursday at Walker Funeral Home, the Rev John Clark of the First Christian Church of Clarinda officiating. Mrs Willard Andrew and Mrs Ronald Perry furnished the music. Bearers included Eldon Miller, Ernest Gray, Roger Gant, Clark Crawford, Reid Shields and Thomas Harris.

Burial was to be in Bedford Fairview Cemetery where her parents and two brothers were buried. She is last of five boys and four girls in the family of George and Margaret Reynolds Bix.

She was born on a farm west of Bedford on Nov 24,1888. As a girl she was on a farm northeast of Siam and her early education was at North Star school. She attended the Morning Star Church, later joining the Church of Christ at Siam where she always was doing some active task, whether with the music, communion, caring for the property or any task needed at that time.

She worked for others many years, specializing in maternity cases. She went to make her home with the Hugh Reids in 1930 and moved with them to Clarinda in 1938. She worked at the Mental Health Institute and in local homes. Her last residence was in an apartment on South 16th St, and at that time the Siam church had a special celebration to honor her.

Mrs Briggs lived In Taylor County

Mrs David (Lucile Marie) Briggs, 68, of rural Gravity died Friday morning [May 18, 1973] at Clarinda Municipal Hospital where she had been since Wednesday.

She was born May 10, 1905, at Frazee, Minn, the daughter of John and Fredericks Sultman Heuer. On Feb 25, 1925, she was married to David Briggs. She spent most of her adult life in Taylor County.

Funeral services for Mrs Briggs were held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with Loren Daly of the New Market Church of Christ officiating. Mrs Joan Archer was soloist and Mrs Grace Perry organist. Honorary bearers were Forest Lawger, Willard Marsh, Orie Huntsman, Fred Straugh, Dean Johnson and Ray Stamps. Casket bearers were Bob Briggs, Clarion Lee Heuer, Fred Heuer, Robert Straugh, Neal Morehouse, and Leonard Huntsman. Burial was in the Guss Cemetery.

Mrs Briggs is survived by her husband and two sons, Edwin Briggs of New Market and Virgil Briggs of Clarinda. There are four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Services held for Mrs Charter

GUSS — Funeral services for Mrs Mary J [ane Cusick] Charter, 95, were held Tuesday [March 12, 1974] at the Maple Grove Church. The Rev Charles Bissinger officiated, music being by Mrs Willard Andrew and pianist Mrs Frederick A Berggren.

Mrs Charter lived in this vicinity about 50 years ago and in recent times has been in a nursing home at Burlington. Daughters are Mrs John (Dorothy) Smith, Mrs Clinton Burrell, Mrs Sammy (Ruth) Welcher and Mrs Berniece Smith of the southeast Iowa area. Mrs Burl Hutchinson of Corning is a niece.

Clarindan’s father died

Harry T. [urley] Cheese, 87, of Lenox, father of Mrs. Dale Martindale of Clarinda, died Dec 23 and services were held Wednesday from St Patrick church in Lenox with Fr Reginald Maslinski officiating. He had been [a] resident of the Lenox Nursing Home. He was born in Illinois and had been [a] Lenox resident for nearly 80 years. His other daughter is Mrs. Carl Shaw of San Francisco, Cal, and two sons, Ray of Lenox and Hal of Ft Morgan, Colo.

Mrs. Clement born in Taylor County

Mrs. Fern Clement, 78, who has made her home at the apartment at 500 E Washington St, died unexpectedly Saturday evening at the Clarinda Hospital just a short time after she had been taken with an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services in charge of Sutphen Funeral Home were to be this Tuesday at the Guss Church. Interment was to be in the cemetery at the church.

Mrs. Clement was born in Taylor County, and farmed in the Guss vicinity with her husband, Dale, who died in 1968. She assisted in the home of Mrs. Fisher in Valley Township for several years, and has lived in Clarinda in recent years. She was the daughter of the late Edward P and Mary Seymour Rogers.

She has six surviving children, Mrs. Travis Powell of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. William Kane of Council Bluffs, Dean of Cedar Rapids, Glen of Ashland, Wis., George of Jefferson City, Mo, and Carmen of Villisca.

The Rev Ed Osburn was to be officiating clergy, with Mrs. Albert Johnson and Mrs. Walter Johnson in charge of the flowers, and music by Mrs. Quincy Dunn and David Hull. Casket bearers were to be Walter Johnson, Gerald Maxwell, Harold Moore, Kenneth Fudge, Paul Mitchell and Edward Naven.

Guss burial for Mrs. Clarence Constance

Mrs Clarence (Flora E [llen]) Constance, 79, of Hepburn died Monday night [February 11, 1974] at West Heights Manor after having been ill since mid-November of last year.

Mrs Constance was born Oct 17, 1894, in Worth County, Mo, the daughter of Simon and Celia [Ann] Hill Cox. She was married to Blaine Mattson, and in 1965 was married to Clarence Constance.

Mrs Constance is survived by her husband of the home and three children, Mrs Jesse Stephens of Hepburn, George Mattson of Rolette, N D, and Bernard Mattson of Cody, Wyo. There are 12 grandchildren.

Services for Mrs Constance were held this Thursday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with John R Topham officiating. Mrs Ronald Perry was organist. Casket bearers were Dean, Albert and Lloyd Constance, Jesse Stephens, Joe Mattson, and Bobbie Eickemeyer.

Burial was in the Guss cemetery.

Mrs Delbert Gibson active in education, civic work

Services   for   Mrs   Delbert (Flora) Gibson, 64, were held Wednesday at Gravity after her death at her home in Gravity Nov 18 [1973]. Burial was in Washington Cemetery in Gravity with the Rev Robert Truitt officiating.

Music at the service was by Quentin Gibson and Mrs June Sturm. Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Meyers and Leslie Anderson and active   bearers, Wayne Lovitt, Jack Ambrose, Lloyd Ambrose, Vern Day, Harry Northover and Ross Keyt.

 She was Flora Louise Staab, born Dec 9, 1907, near Valley Falls, Kan, to Wendlin and Mary Catherine  [Zeh] Staab, who   had brought   their   family   from Germany. Flora attended schools at Valley Falls and received a teaching certificate from State Teachers College at Emporia Kan, she following the teaching profession for nine years in her home state.

She was married Feb 4,1939, to John Delbert Gibson, who was a carpenter.   They   lived   in   the College Springs community and moved to Gravity in 1951 where she was active with community events and an avid supporter of education. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the CWCS and Sunshine Club.

Her husband survives her, as do four children, John of Omaha, Mrs Jim   (Linda) McClurg of Bettendorf, Dan of Carmichael, Cal, and Lyle of Ames. They have two grandchildren.

 

She has a sister, Mrs Rose Wood of Valley Falls, Kan, being preceded   in   death   by   seven brothers and sisters, Clarence, Elmer, Leo, Ed, Dewey, Frieda and Mae.

Mrs. Harris lived near New Market

Mrs. Tommy (Jessie A [nn]) Harris, 82, died Thursday afternoon, March 22, in her home northeast of New Market.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Walker Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating. Organist was Mrs. Orville Ridenour and soloist Mrs. Dalphon Bashor.

Casket bearers were Dale Combs, Max McAlpin, Duane Anderson, Raymond Whitehead, Earnie Glassgow and Estel Combs.

Honorary bearers were Beryl Beery, William Brockman, Merrill Black, Victor Blume, Paul Shaffer and Orville Ridenour.

Interment was in the Dallas Center Cemetery.

Mrs. Harris, the daughter of Miles and Ann Reeves Shore, was born near Beloit, Kans., Dec 3, 1890. At the age of three months she moved with her parents to a farm east of New Market.

She attended school in New Market being graduated in 1906. She attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, in 1908 and taught four years in the rural schools, Fairview, Lindsay, Turner and Prairie Gem, near New Market.

On Feb 14, 1912, she was married to Thomas A. Harris at her parents' home in New Market. They lived on the Harris family farm for 61 years.

She was a member of the New Market Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Worthy Matrons, and a charter member of the W T Club.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Oren (Pearl) Crawford, and Mrs. George (Grace) Webb, son- in-law George Flora and a grandson.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ethelyn Flora of Niles, Mich., son Lyle of New Market, four grandchildren and a brother Miles Victor Shore of Winter Haven, Fla.

Dow Huntsman died Wednesday

[William] Dow Huntsman, 80, died Wednesday [July 10, 1974] at the Colonial Manor in Bedford where he had taken residence two days earlier. The retired farmer from the Gravity area had had a long illness.

Services will be at 2 pm Saturday   at   Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs Kenneth (Louise) Holland of Broken Arrow, Okla, son, Stanley of Clarinda and stepdaughter, Mrs Mildred Neller of St Helena, Calif, three grandchildren and five great - grandchildren. His sisters are Mrs Goldie Morehouse and Mrs Sue Morehouse.

He had lived on the farm northwest of Gravity for 47 years

Guy Joslyn died in Missouri, grandson flew here from Germany

GRAVITY (Special) — Guy Joslyn, 83, died Nov 15 at Denver, Mo, where he had been with a daughter, Mrs Jakie Green. His grandson, Penny Pitman, flew from Germany, where he is stationed with the armed forces, to attend the funeral Nov 17.

His wife, the former Edna Mae Churchill, had died several years ago. His family includes the three daughters, Mrs Green, Denver, Mo, Mrs Opal Builderback [Bilderbach], Sedra Wooley, Wash, Marion Joslyn, Shenandoah and son Donny Wade Joslyn, The Dalles, Ore.

Minister for the services was the, Rev Ivo Randels. Casket bearers were Fred McNutt, Francis McNutt, Carl Winger, Harold Churchill, Glen Churchill and Doyle Churchill. Guy lived in Gravity many years and retired only a few years ago.

Guy Joslyn Rites Nov. 22

Funeral services for Guy Joslyn, lifetime Gravity resident, held November 22 at Gravity Christian Church, were conducted by Rev. Ivo Randels, Bedford Christian minister. Mr. Joslyn died November 17 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jakie Green of Denver, Mo. at the age of 82 years and 15 days. He had been in failing health the past three months. Burial was at Washington cemetery, Gravity.

Included in the services was the following obituary:

Guy Joslyn, son of John and Emma [Emmaline May Severns] Joslyn was born on a farm near Gravity, Ia., Nov. 2, 1881. He spent his entire life in Gravity, Ia. except 3 years in Hesperit, Wash.

He was united in marriage to Edna May Churchill Feb. 22, 1905 and to them six children were born; two sons died in infancy. The living are: Mrs. Neva [Pearl] Green, Denver, Mo., Mrs. Opal Bullderback [Bilderbach], Sedra Wooley, Wash., Marion Joslyn, Shenandoah, Ia., Donny Wade Joslyn, The Dalles, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one sister.

He is survived by four sisters and one brother; Mrs. Hattie McNutt and Mrs. Jessie McNutt, Bedford, Ia., Mrs. Al Gloshen, Corning, Ia., Mrs. Nellie Winger, Waterville, Ia.; 12 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; a large number of nieces and nephews, and a lot of friends.

He was a kind and loving father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

MASON TWP, June 15 — [Benjamin] Dale Kelso of Des Moines died Thursday morning. He was born in Mason Township, the son of the late Frank and Dora Kelso. He attended the North Star School.

He has lived in Des Moines for several years, and has been a Transport driver.

He leaves his wife, Margaret; daughter Beulah; son Kenneth, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs Harve (Ethel) Thompson of Mason Township, four brothers, Ralph of Twin Falls, Idaho; Glade of Guilford, Mo, Clarence of Lucerne, Cal, and Beryl of Mason Township and several nieces and nephews.

BURR LONG DIED DECEMBER 30th   

OAK HILL, Jan 2 — Burr Long formerly of the Fairview vicinity and Corning died Dec 30 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning. Burr a farmer was also a stock buyer in the surrounding area. Mrs Long (Bertha) is a resident of the nursing home in Lenox.

GRAVITY, May 22 - Relatives received word of the death of an older resident, Tom [Thomas Jefferson] Morrison, at the Lenox rest home Friday [May 19, 1972]. Services were held in Bedford Monday and burial at Gravity. He was an uncle of Leslie Anderson.

Thomas Morrison Rites Held Mon.

Funeral services for Thomas J. Morrison, 91, of Gravity were held Mon., May 22, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here with Mr. Carl Cummings officiating. Mr. Morrison died May 19, 1972, at the Lenox Nursing Home. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Thomas Jefferson Morrison, son of Burd and [Rosetta] Jane Scott Morrison, was born in Holt Township, Taylor County Iowa, on June 26, 1880. He grew to adulthood in the community where he was born and was employed on farms in this area, helping people with work and chores while they were on trips and vacations. He had lived his entire life time in Taylor County.

He was one who loved the out-of-doors. He admired nature and spent considerable time in fishing, hunting and trapping.

He enjoyed music and one of his accomplishments was to learn to play the violin with both joy and enthusiasm.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Norton Burd (Pete) and a sister, Anna Burnside.

He is survived by one sister, Della [May] Anderson, of Bedford and nieces and nephews.

He was a kind and considerate son and brother, friend and neighbor and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

KENNETH PARKS DIES AFTER LENGTHY ILLNESS

OAK HILL, Sept 15 — Kenneth [Lewis] Parks, 62, of Omaha, Neb, died Friday Sept 7 at the Veterans Hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were Monday at the funeral home in Bedford. Burial at the Washington Cemetery north of Gravity. Kenneth youngest son of Albert [Sherman] and Etta [May Konecne] Parks grew up in the Oak Hill vicinity.

Services Wednesday for Sarah Randolph

Mrs Sarah E [llen] Randolph, 87, of rural Gravity died Saturday night  [September 28, 1974] at   Municipal   Hospital following a long illness.

She was born Feb 10,1887, near Oakland, Mo, the daughter of William M [arshall] and Nancy [Jane] Barnes Starnes. She was married to Charles [Andrew] Randolph on March 8, 1908 who died March 3,1968. The farm home is three miles northwest of Gravity.

Funeral services for Mrs Randolph will be 2 pm Wednesday [October 2,1974] at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev L P Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will be in Washington Cemetery at Gravity.

Mrs Randolph is survived by four children: Herman Randolph of Coin; Raymond Randolph of Hopkins, Mo; Mrs Alma Bird of New Market; and Mrs Helen Lawrence of Hopkins, Mo; 10 grandchildren and six great -grandchildren.

Mrs Nellie Guynn of Lebanon, Mo, is a sister and brothers are Dave Starnes of Lebanon and George Starnes of Corning, Calif.

MAYNARD NIEL THOMAS

Maynard Niel [Neil] Thomas was born Jan 2, 1905 and passed away June 9, 1976 at the Hand Community Hospital.

On Sept 11, 1969 he was united in marriage to Iola Walker and they have made their home at 401 So Center, Shenandoah.

He attended the Lincoln Auto and tractor school in Lincoln. He was a mechanic and a farmer. [He] Was a carpenter and in the saw sharpening trade at the time of his death.

He is survived, by his wife Iola; a daughter, Connie Barnes of Belton, Mo, a son Charles Thomas of Clarinda, 3 grandchildren, Chuckie and Cindy Thomas and Jamie Barnes.

Also by three stepsons, Charles E Walker and Allan H. Walker of Shenandoah and Sgt Dennis C. Walker stationed in Spain, 5 step grandchildren, Claudia Jo, Patricia, Bruce, Nick and Jason Walker. Two sisters, Verla Smith and Eunice Thomas of Clarinda. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Grace Hamm Thomas and a grandson.

Services were held from the Jennings Chapel with the Rev. David Stout, officiating. He was a member of the Christian Church. Caring for flowers and memory register were Mrs. Mary Adams and Mrs. Tom Nicholas.

Bearers were C.  E.  Hornbuckle, Bill Harding, Bob Hertenson, Don Cabeen, Jim Whitehill and LeRoy Vrbsky. Burial was at the Bedford Cemetery at Bedford, Iowa.

Mrs Travis died after long illness

Mrs Earl (Gertrude) Travis, 88, died Tuesday night [December 11, 1973] at the Clarinda   Municipal   Hospital after a long illness, and services are being held Friday.

The family is meeting friends this Thursday evening at the Walker Funeral Home and funeral rites have been arranged at 1:30 pm at Walker's with burial in the Dallas Center cemetery northeast of New Market. A representative of the Reformed Church of Latter Day Saints from Shenandoah will officiate. Shum - Novinger Funeral Home is making arrangements.

Mrs Travis was formerly Gertrude [Alice] Novinger, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Franklin [Pierce] Novinger [Ora Belle Towne] of Taylor County. She had worked in Clarinda hotels and cafes for many years as a cook. The residence is at 515 East Washington St with her son Kenneth.

Her husband died in 1972 and she is survived by sons Merle of rural Bedford, [Earl] Duane and Kenneth [Rex] of Clarinda and four grandchildren. Her sister is Mrs Mildred Ballenger of Hamburg.

Families attend relative's burial

Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Vardaman [Orpha Hardee] and Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Vardaman [Irene Fine] attended burial services Sunday for a nephew and cousin, Dr Howard Vardaman, 61, of Chicago. He died of a heart attack while vacationing in Bermuda, his wife surviving him.

Burial was in the Lenox cemetery. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ben Vardaman.

Mrs. Leila Webb died at hospital

Mrs. Leila V [esta] Webb, 79, of rural New Market, died Friday morning [April 6th] at Municipal Hospital where she had been admitted Thursday.

She was born June 27, 1893 near Clarinda, the daughter of Curry [Jeremiah] and Anna [Bridget] Shum Muckey. Her husband, [Stephen] Frank Webb, died May 20,1969. The family home is five miles northeast of New Market.

Mrs. Webb is survived by her granddaughter, Mrs. Leo (Normalee) Miller of New Market and three great - grandchildren and one sister, Mrs.   E [stley] W[illie]  (Ione) [Rae] Werner, of Cheyenne, Wyo.

Funeral services were held this Monday morning at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Ed Osburn officiating. Bonnie Brown was soloist and Pat Larson organist. Casket bearers were Paul Shaffer, Wesley Glassgow, Seldon Hicks, Donald Lister, Merrill Webb and Drexel Gold.

Burial   was   in   the   Guss cemetery.
