Thomas Walston, 86, Lost Rites Held April 30

Funeral services for Thomas Walter Walston, 86, of Sharpsburg, lifetime resident of Taylor and Ringgold counties, held April 30 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were officiated by Carl Cummings. Mr. Walston died April 27,1974 in the Lenox Nursing Home. Interment was at Platteville Cemetery, rural Bedford, Ia.

Last Rites Held April 30 for Thomas Walston

Funeral services for Thomas Walter Walston, 86, of Sharpsburg, were held April 30 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, officiated by Carl Cummings. Mr. Walston died at the Lenox Care Center April 27, 1974. Interment was at Platteville Cemetery, rural Bedford.

Thomas Walter Walston, son of Silas Rude and Mary Ellen (Sharp) Walston, was born July 29, 1887 in Taylor County near Blockton, Iowa.

He spent his younger years in the vicinity of Platteville, Iowa. When he was in his early teens his mother passed away and he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Raper.

He became a member of the Baptist Church as a youth.

He was united in marriage to Cora May Weese on February 2, 1910, at the home of the bride's parents near Sheridan, Missouri. God blessed this union with 11 children.

Tom and his wife, Cora, lived most of their married lives on farms in Ringgold and Taylor Counties, except for a few years in Strahan, Iowa where he was the school custodian. After retirement he made his home in Sharpsburg, Iowa.

In 1973 Mr. and Mrs. Walston celebrated their 63rd Wedding Anniversary.

Preceding him in death were, his beloved wife, Cora May, two infant daughters, Cora Sue and Pearl Mae, a son, Donald [Thomas], at the age of 27 years, one grandson, Edward [Alan] Walston, also his parents. Tom was the youngest of a family of 15, all preceding him in death, four sisters and nine brothers.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Hazel Hoover, Coon Rapids, Iowa, Vane [Edward], Bedford, Nina Rice, Stow, Ohio, Elsie [Ellen] Preston, Lenox, Gerald, New Ulm, Minn., Elvin, Kansas City, Mo., Marvin, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Verle [Lewis], Sharpsburg; four daughters-in-law, Thelma, Janet, Marjorie and Mary Walston, three sons-in-law, Ralph Hoover, Delbert Rice and Clifford Preston; 25 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

He is survived by his parents, 5 brothers, Vane [Edward] of Bedford and Gerald, Elvin, Marvin and Verle [Lewis] at home, and three sisters, Mrs. Ralph Hoover [Hazel] and Mrs. R. B. Owens of Blockton and Elsie at home.

At the age of 15 he united with the Christian church at Delphos.

Funeral services were held at Bedford conducted by Challie E. Graham and burial in the Platteville cemetery.

Donald Walston, 27, Dies At Conway

Donald [Thomas] Walston, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Walston of the Conway community, died at the home Friday afternoon, after having been in ill health for several years.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home in Bedford Sunday afternoon, conducted by Challie E. Graham of Athelstan.  On account of the storm, burial was not made until Monday afternoon, at which time Rev. Ben W. Sinderson officiated at the grave in the Platteville cemetery.

Obituary - Donald Walston

Donald Thomas Walston, son of Thomas W. [alter] and Cora M. [ay Weese] Walston, was born at Sheridan, Mo., Nov. 7, 1913, and died at his home near Conway, Iowa, April 11, 1941, at the age of 27 years, 5 months, and 4 days.

He is survived by his parents, five brothers: Vane [Edward] Walston of Bedford, Gerald, Elvin, Marvin and Verle [Lewis] at home; three sisters, Mrs. Ralph Hoover [Hazel], Mrs. R. B. Owens of Blockton, and Elsie Ellen at home. Two sisters, Pearl Mae and Cora Sue, preceded him in death. There are also two nephews, Eddie Walston [Edward Alan] and Gary Hoover; four nieces, Ann and Janice Walston, and Muriel and Elaine Owens.

At the age of fifteen he confessed his faith in Christ and united with the Christian church at Delphos, Iowa, where he remained a faithful member and was loved by his fellow members. He was always kind and considerate of others through the years of his illness. He was a loving son and brother, who will be greatly missed in his home.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home in Bedford April 13, 1941, conducted by Challie E. Graham, and burial was in the Platteville cemetery.

Mrs. G. C. Walston Former Resident, Dies

Mrs. G. [rover] C. [leveland] Walston, a former resident of Bedford and community, died at the Hamburg, Iowa, hospital Tuesday, May 27, 1941 at the age of 52 years, 1 month and 7 days.

The funeral services were held at the Reeves Funeral Home in Tabor, Iowa, Thursday afternoon, May 29 and burial was in the Tabor cemetery.

Effie Luella Ailshie, daughter of the late John [Morris] and Martha [Sleeth] Ailshie, was born April 20, 1889 in Taylor county, Iowa, where she lived and grew to womanhood.

She was married to Grover Cleveland Walston at Bedford April 20, 1907. To them were born ten children, eight of whom survive, the other two having died in infancy.

The children are Leo Walston of Thurman, Iowa; Ovid Walston of Randolph, Iowa; Mrs. Doris Ogden of Tabor, Iowa; Forrest, Melvin, Ansel, Wilma and Elmer at home.

Surviving with the husband and children are twelve grandchildren; one brother, [James] Frank Ailshie of Blockton; and six sisters, Mrs. Nellie Townsend of Bedford, Mrs. Dorothy Bowman of Perry, Kans., Mrs. Susie Sickles of Payette, Idaho, Mrs. Alice Kinser of Topeka, Kans., Mrs. Lena Turner of Afton, Okla., and Mrs. Mary Barber of Wamego, Kans.

One brother, John [David] Ailshie of Malvern and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Alexander of Athelstan preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Baptist church at the time of her death.

Attending the last rites from Bedford were Mr. and Mrs. J. [ames] F. [rank] Ailshie, Mrs. Nellie Townsend, Mrs. Ethel Raper, Mrs. W. N. Jenkins and Harry Ailshie.

Ed Walston Final Rites To Be Fri.

Funeral services for Edward [Alan] Walston will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bedford Baptist Church. Walston, 30-year-old Taylor county farmer, was fatally injured Tuesday morning at his father's farm three miles southeast of Bedford. The accident happened while the men were working on a combine, which slipped from a jack and pinned Edward beneath it.

The father summoned help when tools and equipment at hand failed to free the youth. A large tractor was brought by a neighbor, but attempts to remove the victim in time failed.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eleanor Walston of the home, three daughters, Vicki, Brenda and Michelle, and a son, Curtis, all of the home, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vane Walston of Bedford.

Final Rites Held Here for Ed Walston

Funeral services for Edward Alan Walston, 30, lifetime Taylor County resident, were held October 21 at the Bedford Baptist Church with Rev. Ollie Odle officiating. Mr. Walston died Oct. 18, following a farm accident with a combine. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Edward Alan Walston, first son of Vane [Edward] and Thelma [Loris Tamerius] Walston, was born in Taylor County on a farm in the East Mission area, June 5, 1936.

He attended grade school in the country and was graduated from Bedford High School in 1955.

On October 29, 1955 at the Baptist parsonage in Bedford he was united in marriage to Eleanor Jean Snyder and to this union four children were born: Vickie Coleen, 9; Curtis Alan, 6; Brenda, 4; and Michele Renae, 7 months.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Frank C. [leveland] Tamerius, in 1940.

In November of 1955 he entered the U. S. Air Force and after serving his country for four years, 18 months of which were spent in Japan and 6 months in Hawaii, he received an honorable discharge.

Except for the four years he was in service he spent his entire life in the Bedford community doing what he liked best, cultivating the soil and enjoying the outdoors.

On April 18, 1954 he and his wife, Eleanor, were baptized together in the First Baptist Church, Bedford.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, and the four children of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vane Walston, Bedford; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Walston, Bedford; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Tamerius, Bedford; four brothers, John [Donald], Bob [Robert Thomas], Glen [Albert] and David all of Bedford and four sisters, Mrs. Ann Goudie, Bedford; Miss Janice [Ilene] Walston, Guthrie Center, Iowa; Mrs. Karen Posten, Bedford; and Miss Teresa [Kay] Walston, Bedford; other relatives and a large circle of friends.

He was a loving husband, a kind father, a devoted son and honest with all his friends. He worked hard and provided well for his family and he would do anything to help others in need.

As the oldest child in the family he assumed much responsibility for his younger brothers and sisters.

He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Rosa Belle Swett was born in Worth County, Missouri, May 16, 1868, and passed away at the home of her brother, John Swett, in St. Joseph, Mo., Sept. 3, 1928, at the age of 60 years, 3 months and 18 days. At an early age she moved with her parents to Taylor county, Iowa, where she spent most of her life, with the exception of two years in the west, and the past five years in Vernon county, Missouri. She was united in marriage to [Elmer] Algy Walston, on March 24, 1901, at Bedford, Ia. To this union three children were born, Mrs. Rachel White of Hammond, Ind.; and Clark [Everett] and Howard at home. Her husband preceded her in death July 6, 1928.

She is survived by three sisters and three brothers: Mrs. S. [idney] S. Merriman [Ida] of Armington, Mont.; Mrs. C [harles] T. [heodore] Rusco [Mary Catherine] of Athelstan, Ia.; Mrs. A. [lbert] F.[redrick] Older [Dora Francis] of Blockton, Ia.; Wm. Swett of Athelstan, Ia.; C. [yrus] V. [inson] Swett of Great Falls, Mont. and John [Alvin] Swett of St. Joseph, Mo. She obeyed her Saviour when a young girl and united with the Mt. Zion Baptist church of which she continued a faithful member until called home. She was a faithful companion, kind loving mother, and well-respected neighbor.

The funeral services were held in the Athelstan, Iowa, Baptist church, Sept. 8, 1928, conducted by Challie E. Graham, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Platteville cemetery.

The funeral services were held in the Athelstan Baptist church, Sept. 9, 1928, conducted by Challie E. Graham, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Platteville cemetery. The music was furnished by a quartette, composed of Marion Jenkins, Calvin Jenkins, William Freemyer, and Miss Jean Freeland, with Mrs. F. A. Freeland presiding at the piano. The hymns sung were "I Shall Know Him," "In The Sweet By and By," and "Shall We Gather At The River." The pallbearers were six of her nephews, A. J. Rusco, Charles Rusco, John Rusco, Joe Rusco, Turner Rusco, and Guy Older. There were many beautiful floral offerings by the many friends.

The heartfelt sympathy of the many friends goes out to the bereaved ones in this time of sorrow. May the Lord richly bless them and direct their footsteps to the home Eternal, where there are no goodbyes and all tears are wiped away.

Mrs. Algy Walston Dead
Mrs. Algy Walston died at the home of her brother, John Swett, in St. Joseph Monday evening about 10 o'clock. In company with her two sons, Clark and Howard, she was on her way here from Stoutsville or Springport, Mo., to locate. Being in very poor health she became fatally ill at the home of her brother in St. Joseph and died as above stated. Her husband died July 6th of this year. A. F. Older and wife left Tuesday morning for St. Joseph, Mrs. Walston being a sister of Mrs. Older.

Grove Walston Dies At Red Oak

Grover C. [leveland] Walston, son of Silas [Rude] and Mary [Ellen Sharp] Walston, died June 7, 1953 at Red Oak, following a heart attack. He was aged 67 years, six months, one day.

Grover was born at Blockton, Dec. 6, 1885. He grew to manhood there and in later life went to Fremont County. On April 20, 1907 he was married to Effie Louella Ailshie. To them ten children were born, two dying in infancy.

The surviving children are Leo Walston, Longmont, Colo.; Ovid Walston, Loveland, Colo.; Mrs. Doris Ogden, Sidney, Iowa; Forrest Walston, Thurman, Iowa; Melvin Walston, Nebraska City, Nebr.; Ansel Walston, Red Oak; Mrs. Wilma Earith, Thurman; and Elmer at home.

There are also 22 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Fannie [May] Swett, Mount Vernon, Washington, [Susan] Irene Ward, North Platte, Nebr.; three brothers, J. [ames] R. [obert] Walston, Vancouver, Wash., R. [oy] C.[orbin] Walston, Bliss, Idaho; T. [homas] W. [alter] [Walston, Strahan, Iowa. Nine brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Resident of Stotsbury Neighborhood Died of Heart Trouble Friday
Elmer A. [lgy] Walston of two miles east of Stotesbury, passed away Friday morning at 7:30 o'clock at his home, following a month's illness of heart trouble, though he has been in poor health for the past ten years.
He has only lived in the Stotsbury neighborhood since March 1. He was the son of Silas and Mary Ellen Walston, born in Worth county, Mo., in September 1871. He was 56 years, 9 months and 6 days of age at the time of his death. He was married to Rosie Bell Sweet [Swett] on March 24, 1901 at Althuston [Athelstan], Mo. He is survived by his wife and three children: Mrs. Rachael White of Hammond, Kan. and Clark and Howard Walston, both at home. He leaves three grandchildren.
He also leaves fourteen sisters and brothers as follows: Mrs. Blanch L. Silas D. [ouglas] Walston was born in Worth county, Missouri, Sept. 1, 1874 and died in Bellingham, Wash., March 30, 1949 at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 29 days.

He was married at Grant City, Mo., to Miss Bessie K. Smith. To them were born 5 children: Mrs. Gayle Beermink of Lynden, Wash., Mrs. Marge Parkes of Englewood, New Jersey, Glen Walston of Seattle, Wash., Virgil Walston of Bellingham, Wash., Frank Walston of Bremerton, Wash. He leaves his wife and five children. Also two sisters, Mrs. Fannie [May] Swett of Mt. Vernon, Wash., Mrs. [Susan] Irene Ward of North Platte, Nebr.; 4 brothers, J. [ames] R. Vane Edward Walston, son of Thomas Walter Walston and Cora Mae Weese Walston was born in Worth County Missouri on October 1,1911. He departed this life April 23, 1996 at Corning, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 22 days.

The oldest son in a family of 11 children, Vane grew up on farms in Ringgold County where he also attended area schools and the Christian Church.

On September 29,1934 he was united in marriage to Thelma Loris Tamerius at the Christian parsonage in Bedford. During their nearly 62 years of marriage Vane and Thelma lived and farmed in Taylor County. They raised a family of nine children: Eddie, Ann, Janice, John, Bob, Karen, Glen, Teresa and David.

Not only was Vane a farmer, he was also a salesman. He started as a young boy traveling on horseback, selling garden seeds to neighbors. He continued to sell feed, seed, and the idea of rural water to area farmers for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Donald and Verle, two sisters who died in infancy, and a son, Eddie.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Thelma, sons: John, of

Hudson, New York; Bob, Glen and David all of Bedford. Daughters: Janice Walston of Guthrie Center, IA; Ann Goudie, Karen Hensley and Teresa Murphy all of Bedford.

Brothers: Elvin, Bedford; Gerald of Jefferson, IA; and Marvin of Waverly, IA; Sisters: Hazel Hoover, Coon Rapids, LA; Nina Rice, Boynton Beach, Florida; and Elsie Preston, of Lenox, LA. He also leaves 24 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Vane was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford, where he once served as a trustee.

Vane always used good farming practices and he served as a committee member of the Area Soil Conservation Service. His main concern was to preserve the land for future generations. Vane worked for many years in helping to bring rural water to southern Iowa and he served on the Southern Iowa Rural Water Association board for 18 years.

Vane was very proud of his family and took great joy in new additions to the family. In his last few years, visits from family and friends meant a great deal to him. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held April 25 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home of Bedford with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Rev. Ted DeHass officiated.
