Obituary - David E. Clayton

David E. [lzy] Clayton died at his home in Polk Township Monday evening. He had not been well for some time yet his condition was not thought serious.

David E. [lzy] Clayton was born in Washington County, Ohio, July 17, 1836, and was reared to manhood there upon a farm. Attaining his majority he bought a home in Iowa, coming here in 1858, driving a team for a man moving to Gentry County, Missouri. Later he came to Taylor County and worked on a farm but being ambitious he bought four yoke of steers and began breaking prairie in Polk Township. In 1862 he traded his teams for 240 acres of Polk township land. While visiting his mother in Ohio he enlisted as a member of Company G, Ninety-second Ohio volunteer infantry. Having a creditable military record and took part in many important battles, he was mustered out, honorably discharged and returned home.

February 3, 1866, he was married in Perry County, Ohio, to Miss Harriet E.[lizabeth] Griffith. Following their marriage they came to Taylor County and located on the land Mr. Clayton had previously bought. Staying on this place for two years, they sold out and bought a tract further to the north. In 1869 he sold that property and took up his abode upon the place where he has resided ever since. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Clayton were born three sons and a daughter, Ora G.[riffith] of Polk Township, Mary H. [annah] Scrivner of Craig, Mo., Alva J.[efferson] of Polk Township.

Mr. Clayton was a member of the Siam Methodist church and a member of the Sedgwick Post, No. 10, G. A. R. He was one of Taylor CountyÕs best-known farmers and was loved and respected by all who knew or ever associated with him.

Funeral services for Mrs. P. [erley] A. [rthur] Blake, who died at her home in Bedford Thursday morning, May 30, were held at the Methodist Episcopal church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. M. R. Talley. Burial was in the Conway Cemetery.

Hollie G. Powell was born near New Windsor, Ill., Oct. 10, 1875. When about two and a half years of age she moved with her parents to a farm just east of Conway. For several months she had not been well but it was not until late in the year that her condition was thought to be of a serious nature.

Surviving with the husband and daughter are three brothers, Bert Powell and Clint Powell of Conway and Cliff Powell of Omaha, Nebr. There is also one nephew, Earl Powell of Corning and a niece, Mrs. Bessie P. Ford of Gray, Canada.
