Mrs. J. R. Anderson
Mrs. J. [ames] R. [enwick] Anderson [Sarah Ellen Maxwell], 82, well known resident of Taylor County, died at her home in Lenox Sunday afternoon, Nov. 22. Mrs. Anderson moved to Lenox in 1886.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 24, in the United Presbyterian church in Lenox. She is survived by her husband, J. [ames] R.[enwick] Anderson, and six children. Mrs. Anderson was the mother of Dr. T.[homas] E. [lliott] Anderson of this city.

Mrs. J. R. Anderson
Sarah Ellen Maxwell was born near Cadiz, Ohio, July 24, 1850, and passed away at her home in Lenox, Iowa, Nov. 22, 1931, aged 81 years and 4 months. In 1865, she came with her parents to Washington county, Iowa, where she resided until 1872, when she moved with her parents to Adams county, Iowa. On June 26, 1873, she was united in marriage to James R. [enwick] Anderson. To this union six children were born: F. D. Anderson and Wayne [Maxwell] Anderson of Wilsonville, Nebr.; T. [homas] E. [lliott] Anderson of Bedford; Mabel E. Anderson and Ray V. Anderson of Lenox; and Mary B. [elle] Napp of Wooster, Ohio. Besides her husband and children she is survived by eight grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. At an early age she became a member of the United Presbyterian church and in 1886 placed her membership in the Lenox church of which she has been a faithful and devoted member for the past 45 years.

Melvin [Henry] Beck, twin son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beck, died at the hospital in Creston, Friday, November 20. The funeral was held Sunday at the home and interment was made in the Clearfield cemetery. He was about 6 weeks old. His twin, sister Marilyn, survives him.

Obituary-Melvin Henry Beck.
Melvin Henry Beck, little son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beck, was born October 8th, 1931, and passed away at the Community Hospital, Creston, Iowa, November 20, 1931, at the age of one month and twelve days.
He leaves to mourn his death, his father and mother, two sisters, Vaunceil Lois and his little twin, Marilyn Fern, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baker and Mrs. John Beck, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. John Turner of the Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Porter Wilt of Lenox, Mrs. Harry Wilt, and Mrs. Cecil Maharry sang. Interment in Clearfield Cemetery.

Obituary
Eliza Turner Carter, fourth daughter of J. [ohn] D. and Priscilla Carter was born near Maloy Feb. 5, 1856, and died at her home in Blockton, November 27, 1931, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 22 days.
She was married on April 19, 1873, to L. [aurence] L. Ogle, who preceded her in death March 30, 1900. To this union ten children were born. She is survived by three sons and three daughters—Mrs. W. [illiam] W. Poore [Maude], of Mount Ayr; Mrs. Mary [Katherine] Drake, of Blockton; Mrs. J. [ohn] W. Bowman [Phoebe Priscilla], of Long Beach, California; Earl [Raymond], at home; Guy [Clifford] Ogle, of Blockton, and Clay [Bement] Ogle, of Hyannas, Nebraska. Also two brothers, Day Carter, of Tingley Iowa, and J. [ohn] T. Carter, of Stockton, California. Four sons preceded her in death.
As a mother her life of sacrifice has seldom been equaled and never excelled. In the community in which she has lived she has been a real "Dorcas" as she was never too busy to help others in need. In the passing of this life her home and community will feel the loss of a real friend.
She united with the Methodist church in her youth and was always faithful to its teaching.
Funeral services were held at the Blockton Methodist church Sunday morning at 10:30, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior. Interment in the Mount Ayr cemetery.

Earl Ogle, 89, Rites Were Held In Blockton
Funeral services for Earl Raymond Ogle were held September 20 at the Blockton United Methodist Church conducted by Pastor Milt Henderson. Mr. Ogle died September 18. Graveside rites were by the American Legionnaires of Blockton. Interment was in the Blockton Rose Hill Cemetery.
Earl Raymond Ogle was born near Maloy, Iowa on April 26, 1893. His parents were Laurence and Eliza Turner Carter Ogle. He was one of 10 children.
He attended the Hillside School. His father died when Earl was seven years old and he and his brothers helped their mother carry on the farm work.
Earl was inducted into the army in 1918 and was discharged in 1919 after serving in France. After his discharge from the army, he returned to Blockton and worked in the creamery and did farm labor.
He was a member of the Blockton United Methodist Church.
He spent most of the rest of his life in and around Blockton except for a short time spent in California where he worked in a foundry.
Upon returning to Blockton, he made his home with Guy and Mona Ogle and worked as a painter, construction worker and a carpenter. He spent his spare time fishing and enjoying the outdoors.
In 1978, he entered Clearview Home in Mount Ayr where he made his home until his death.
He is survived by a brother, Clay [Bement] Ogle, of Alvin, Tex. and many nieces and nephews and cousins. He will be missed by his many friends.

Mrs. May [Mary Katherine Ogle] Drake, former resident of Blockton, died last week in Phoenix, Arizona, where had been making her home for the past few years. Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 25 in the Blockton Methodist church and burial was in the Blockton cemetery.

Mary K. Drake Dies In Arizona
Mary Katherine Drake was born in Ringgold County, Iowa, on Sept. 7, 1880 and passed away in Phoenix, Arizona, on August 22, 1959.
She was united in marriage to Emmett Carlton Drake on April 20, 1904. To this union one daughter was born.
She leaves to mourn her passing the daughter, Roberta Mardelle Wilson; three brothers, Earl [Raymond], Guy [Clifford] and Clay [Bement] Ogle; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Poor and Mrs. Percie [Phoebe Priscilla] Bowman.
Mary Drake was a member of the Blockton Methodist church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She had just returned to Phoenix two weeks ago after a five weeks' visit with relatives and friends in Blockton.

Carl Drake Dead
Emmett [Carlton] Drake, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. [lwood] S. [trawbridge] Drake of this place, died in a hospital in San Antonio, Texas, Tuesday morning following a surgical operation.
Mr. Drake, who was in business at Natalia, Texas, was taken ill on Monday of last week and was placed under the care of a physician. He grew gradually worse and was taken to the hospital where the surgical operation was performed on Wednesday. His condition was considered critical from the start and very little hope was held out for his recovery. The body will be brought to Blockton where the funeral will be held and interment will be made.

Obituary
Emmett Carlton Drake, son of Ellwood [Elwood Strawbridge] and Sarah [Frances Eaton] Drake, was born at Blockton, Iowa, April 15, 1883, and died at the Medical & Surgical Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 11, 1930, at the age of 47 years, 6 months and 26 days.
He was united in marriage to Mary K. [atherine] Ogle April 20, 1904. One daughter, Roberta Mardell, was born to this union.
They moved to Montana soon after their marriage where they lived six years. They then moved to Nebraska where they lived 16 years. While living at Alliance, Nebraska, he was converted and joined the Methodist church. They later went to Natalia, Texas, where the remainder of his life was spent.
He is survived by his wife, daughter and her husband, father and mother, two brothers, A. [rthur] O. [wen] Drake of Friona, Texas, and Elbert W. [ade] of Blockton; also two sisters, Mrs. Belle Brown of Henry, Nebraska, and Mrs. Florence [Eleanor] Minor of New Market. One sister preceded him in death.
Besides the immediate family he leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his departure.
He was a member of the Odd Fellow, Rebekah and Masonic orders.
Funeral services were held at the Blockton Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the pastor. Rev. W. H. Warrior. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton.

A. A. Severns and Mrs. Belle Brown, of Henry; Homer Sickels and wife, of Morrill, and Isaac Drake and wife, of York, Nebraska, came on Wednesday evening of last week to attend the funeral of E. C. Drake.
The body of E. C. Drake arrived here Thursday afternoon from San Antonio, Texas, accompanied by Mrs. E. C. Drake and L. M. Wilson and wife, of Natalia, and A. O. Drake, of Friona, Texas. Mrs. E. W. Drake, who was returning home from Indiana where she was called by the death of an aunt, joined them at Kansas City and E. W. Drake met the funeral party at St. Joseph.

Drake, the Natalia, Texas, newspaper said: "Mr. Drake, with his wife, daughter and son-in-law, came here two years ago, built a home and established a business and was one of the most popular businessmen of the town. He was a graduate optometrist, an electrician by profession, senior member of the Natalia Electrical Co., and of the Orange Café. He was a member of the Methodist church and a Mason. The entire community and surrounding towns, where he was known, join in sympathy and feel keenly the loss of this good man."

Mrs. E. S. Drake Dead
Mrs. E. [lwood] S. [trawbridge] Drake [Sarah Frances Eaton] passed away at her home in Blockton Monday afternoon about 2 o'clock. Mrs. Drake has been in failing health since the 19th day of December when she had the misfortune to fall and break one of her thigh bones. Funeral services were held at the home yesterday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior, and interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

Obituary
Sarah Frances Eaton, daughter of Samuel and Martha Eaton, was born northeast of Blockton April 6, 1856, and died at her home in Blockton April 17, 1933, at the age of 77 years, and 11 days.
She was married to Elwood S. [trawbridge] Drake Dec. 25, 1877. To this union six children were born, two having preceded their mother in death—Laura Estelle who died April 27, 1908, and Emmett Carlton who died Nov. 11, 1930. The living children are Mrs. Belle Brown, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Arthur O.[wen] Drake, of Friona, Texas; Elbert W. [ade] Drake and Mrs. Florence [Eleanor] Minor, of Blockton. These with the husband are left to mourn her departure. She also leaves 22 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, 2 brothers and 8 sisters, besides a host of friends and neighbors.
On Dec. 19, 1932, she had the misfortune to fall and break her hip. Since that time she has been a great sufferer, until death came to her release.
She was converted when quite young and always led an honest, earnest Christian life, always ready to help those who needed help in time of sickness or sorrow. She was a great Bible student and always enjoyed her work for the Master.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 oÕclock, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior, pastor of the M. E. church. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton.

Obituary
Elwood S. [trawbridge] Drake, son of Owen [Davis] and Martha [Ann Newton] Drake, was born in Warren County, New Jersey, August 19, 1851, and passed away after a short illness at his home in Blockton, March 8, 1937, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 19 days.
At the age of 19 years he came to Iowa where he has made his home in Ringgold and Taylor counties.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Frances Eaton Dec. 25,1877. To this union six children were born: Mrs. Belle Brown and Elbert [Wade] of Blockton, Arthur O.[wen] of Friona, Texas, and Mrs. Florence [Eleanor] Minor of New Market, and Laura Estelle and Emmett Carlton, who preceded their parents in death, the wife and mother having passed away April 17, 1933.
Since the death of his departed dear one, as his wish, he has maintained and kept the home with the help of his children, his daughter, Belle, caring for the home during the last two years.
In young manhood he confessed his faith in Christ and united with the Baptist church and through all the years of his life he never lost his faith, always striving to live a Christian life. In all his affliction he was always patient and cheerful.
He was a kind husband and father, an honorable citizen and a good Christian. What more can be said of any departed loved one?
He leaves to mourn his departure his brother and sister, Isaac Drake of York, Nebr., and Eva Sickels of Bridgeport, Nebr.; his four remaining children, 22 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday, March 10, Rev. W.H. Warrior having charge of the services. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

Arthur Drake, 79, Died In Texas
Relatives at Blockton received the message of the sudden death of Arthur Owen Drake, 79, at the family home in Friona, Texas, Sunday, January 31.
Art, as his friends and relatives knew him, was one of a family of six children born to the late Elwood [Strawbridge] and Sarah [Frances Eaton] Drake of the Blockton community.
He was married to Bessie Miller in 1903 and they moved to Palmer County, Texas, in 1909 where they established their family home for the past 51 years.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Howard and son of Abernathy, Texas; Mrs. Treva Reece and three sons of Canyon, Texas; two sons, Arthur, wife and three daughters of Friona, Earl, wife and three sons of Friona; one brother, Elbert [Wade] Drake of Blockton; one sister, Mrs. Florence [Eleanor] Hughes of New Market; two great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents of Blockton, one brother, Carl [Emmett Carlton]; two sisters, [Laura] Estelle Drake and Mrs. Belle Brown; one son Owen and a daughter, Pearl.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Friona, Texas, Tuesday afternoon, February 2. Interment in the Friona, Texas cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Carl (Florence Eleanor) Hughes, 80, of New Market, were held Wed., June 7, at the United Methodist church in New Market with Rev. Ed Osburn officiating. Mrs. Hughes died June 5 at West Heights Manor in Clarinda. Interment was at the Blockton Cemetery, Blockton.
Survivors include her husband, Carl; five children including Rue K. Minor of Blockton.

Mrs. Edna Minor of Amarillo, Texas, daughter-in-law of Mrs. Carl Hughes [Florence Eleanor Drake Minor] of New Marker, Iowa, accompanied by Mrs. Arthur Drake [Bessie Miller] and Mrs. Earl Drake both of Friona, Texas, came Tuesday to attend the funeral services of Mrs. Hughes, which was held Wednesday in New Market, Ia.
Burial was in the Blockton, Rose Hill Cemetery.
The three ladles visited in the homes of Georgia Drake and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Drake and family, returning to their respective homes Thursday morning.

John Harlan Standley, son of Dora E. [velyn Wakefield] and Joseph P. [erry] Standley, was born April 4, 1899, at Platteville, Iowa, and passed away at his home at Platteville Nov. 23, 1931, aged 32 years, 4 months and 12 days.
Ha was educated in Bedford and St. Joseph high schools, and took a course in pharmacy in Des Moines and Brunswick, Mo.
He served in the World's war at the Government Hospital at Ashville, N. C. Since then he has resided in Platteville and vicinity.
He was united in marriage to Esper Griffith March 31, 1917. To this union three children were born—two of whom are living—Betty and Johann.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and children, his father and mother, a sister, [Ida] Fern Straight, and her family, his aunt, Mrs Ida Terrill, and families, and a host of friends.
The funeral services were held at the Platteville church, conducted by Rev. W. H Warrior. The music was furnished by the Blockton Male Quartet. He was laid to rest in the family lot at the Platteville cemetery.

Obituary—J. L. Matthews
James Lee Matthews was born in Indiana January 24, 1845 and departed this life at his home in Conway April 16, 1926, aged 81 years, 2 months and 22 days.
When a small boy he came with his grandparents to Iowa, where he grew to manhood. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted with the 1st Iowa cavalry and served until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge.
He was united in marriage to Martha J. Lockwood, December 6, 1866, and to this union were born two children, Nettie Lee, deceased, and William of Chickasha, Oklahoma.
His wife died May 13, 1872. On January 6, 1874, at Daytonville, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Emeline Matthews. To this union one child was born, Charles Wesley, of Los Angeles, California. He with his family moved to Conway, Iowa in 1891 where they have since resided.
On December 1873, he was made a Mason at Wellman, Iowa, and in 1891 admitted to Right Angle Lodge A. .F & A. M. Conway, Iowa. He was also a member of O. E. S. for a number of years.
He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, two sons, six grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services in charge of the Masonic Lodge were held at the Conway church Sunday afternoon April 18th, conducted by the pastor J. A. E. Cunningham. Burial was in the Conway cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Matthews came up from St. Joseph Saturday night to attend the funeral of J. [ames] L. [ee] Matthews and visit her son Cecil, who came last week from Los Angeles to care for his grandparents.

Dr. B. [ird] H. Miller and wife left Sunday morning for Dannebrog, Nebraska, to attend the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Alex [ander] Lamb [Sophia Miller], who passed away Thursday. The funeral was held Monday. Mrs. Lamb, whose home was at Farwell, Nebraska, passed away at the home of her son, Will Lamb, at Dannebrog. Her husband preceded her in death some five years ago. One brother and four sisters survive her—Dr. B. [ird] H. Miller, of Blockton; Mrs. Marion Crouch, of Redding; Mrs. Fannie Rush and Miss Lera Miller, of Monmouth, Ill., and Miss Etta [Pearl] Miller, of Marshalltown.

Sopha [Sophia] H. Miller was born July 26, 1862, near Redding, Iowa, the daughter of William M. and Mary J. Miller, old pioneers of Ringgold county. She passed away at the home of her son, Will, April 15, 1926, aged 63 years, 8 months, 19 days. She came to Howard County in 1885 and taught in the public schools of the county until her marriage to Alex Lamb, Oct. 9, 1891. Mr. Lamb passed away July 29, 1921.
To this union were born four sons, two of whom died in infancy. She is survived by two sons, Will who lives near Dannebrog, and Walter who lives on the old homestead, and by three grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters and one brother, two sisters having preceded her in death. The sisters living are: Mrs. Myra Church of Redding, Mrs. Fannie Rush and Miss Valera Miller of Monmouth, Ill., and Miss Etta Miller of Marshalltown; and the brother is Dr. B. H. Miller of Blockton.
Mrs. Lamb was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church all her life. She was a woman of sterling Christian character, a loving and kind wife and mother, a good neighbor, kind and helpful to all. She will be greatly missed, not only by her dear ones but by all her many friends.
The funeral took place from the home of her son, Will, where Rev. Pedersen held a brief service and [spoke] from Ps. 23, and John 14. From there the body was taken the church at Farwell, where Rev. [?] B. Bryant of St. Paul and Rev. Chr. Pedersen of Dannebrog spoke comforting words to the bereaved ones. The funeral was a very large one, the church not having room for half of the people who attended. She was laid to rest beside her husband on the little cemetery southwest of Farwell to await the resurrection of the Just. May the Lord comfort her dear ones in their sorrow. ---Dannebrog (Nebr.) News
