Former Resident Dies In St. Joseph
John Wesley Wyckoff, 79, a native of Bedford, died unexpectedly in St. Joseph, Dec. 3. He was a retired carpenter for Swift & Co.
Funeral services were held in St. Joseph Wednesday at 10:30 a. m. at the Clark Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Rev. Milton N. Thorne. Burial was in the Bedford cemetery with graveside services at one p. m.
He was a member of the King Hill Methodist church in St. Joseph.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lucile Wyckoff of the home; a son, Albert Wyckoff, St. Louis; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Blanche Pickering, Steele City, Neb., Mrs. Pearl Burr, Kansas City; and a stepson, Roy Vandeman, Denver, Colo.

Death Comes Unexpectedly

Mrs. Emma Wyckoff nee Calkins died at her home in North Bedford at 10:30 oÕclock this forenoon. She had been ill for nearly two years and while her condition was known to be serious, no one believed the malady was likely to prove fatal within so short a time. She was up and around on Wednesday, and was confined to her bed but one day before death came; immediately after she laid down she fell into a stupor and never regained consciousness.
The deceased was the wife of John W. [esley] Wyckoff to whom she was married 12 years ago. To the union was born one son, Albert, who is now about 11 years of age. At the time of her death Mrs. Wyckoff was 31 years of age.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p. m. at the residence. Interment at Bedford Cemetery.

Mrs. Emma Wyckoff died at her home in Bedford at 10 oÕclock a. m., November 11, 1904, age 30 years, 1 month and 12 days.
Emma Calkins was born in Worth County, Mo., on September 29, 1874. On December 8, 1892, she was united in marriage to John W. [esley] Wyckoff at Sheridan, Mo. To this union was born one son, Albert, who is now a boy of 11, and who with her husband are the surviving members of her immediate family.
Eight years ago the deceased united with the Methodist church at Sheridan, Mo., and has ever since remained a steadfast, conscientious member of that church.
The funeral services will be held at the home in North Bedford tomorrow, Sunday, at 2 p. m., conducted by Rev. Thompson. Interment at Bedford cemetery.
Casket will be opened during the forenoon Sunday.

One of Best Known Men In County Passes Away After Residence Here Of 35 Years

Funeral Is Held Sunday
Church Is Filled With Sorrowing Neighbors and Friends of Many Years
John Wyckoff, for thirty-five years a resident of Bedford, died at his home in this city Friday, and the funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the First Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a member. The service was conducted by Rev. F. N. Willis, the pastor, and, notwithstanding the fact that the day was unpleasant, the church was filled with sorrowing friends, many of whom followed the remains to their last resting place. Members of the Bedford and Conway lodges of the I. O. O. F. were present in a body, and marched to the cemetery, where the lodge ceremony took place.
Mr. Wyckoff was born in Warren County, New Jersey, June 30, 1839. When 16 years of age he went with his parents to their new home in Athens, O., where he grew to manhood. February 23, 1862, he was united in marriage with Barbara Laird, and four years later they came to Iowa, residing first in Ringgold County and coming to Bedford in 1875. They were the parents of five children, Mary A.[delia] died in infancy, Bertha E. [tta] died at the age of 8 years. The surviving children are three sons, Louis E. [lmer], and Bert C. [lyde], residing in Bedford, and John W. [esley], of St. Joseph.
Many Years in Business
During his thirty-five years as a citizen of Bedford Mr. Wyckoff came to be one of the best-known men in Taylor County. His years of activity were as an undertaker and cabinetmaker, and after leaving the business of an undertaker, he continued his shop work as long as he was able, having been an expert in this line.
The following that remained with him to the grave bespoke his reputation. His disposition and temperament were such that the friends he made he kept. He had a reputation for his personality being that of honesty and integrity. His devotion to his home and family circle was marked, and in a corresponding measure this disposition was manifested toward his neighbors and friends.

John Wyckoff Passed Away
John Wyckoff, who has been ill for some time, passed away at his home in Bedford Friday morning, January 17. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the M. E. church, conducted by Rev. Fred N. Willis and the I. O. O. F. of which order he had long been a member, had charge of the services at the grave.
John Wyckoff was born June 30, 1839, in Warren county, N. J. When 16 years of age he moved with his parents to Athens county, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. On the 23d of February 1862 he was united in marriage to Barbara Laird and four years later they moved to Ringgold county, Iowa. After residing there until 1875, they moved to Bedford and this has since been their home. This happy home was blessed by the birth of five children: Mary A., who died in infancy; Bertha E., who died when eight years of age; Louis E. of Bedford; John W. of St. Joseph, Mo.; and Bert C. of Bedford. For more than forty years Mr. Wyckoff has been an active member of the M. E. church and his daily life has been an example for all Christians to emulate. He was blessed with many friends and had the love of his family to an exceptional degree. There were none who thought or spoke ill of the deceased. He was of a quiet disposition but firm in his purpose to do right and as he passed away the world lost a good citizen and a good man and the family a kind and loving husband and father. Our sympathies are extended to the bereaved ones.

Mary Wyckoff Rites April 15
Funeral services for Mrs. Louis (Mary) Wyckoff, held April 15 at State Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Rev. Ivo Randels. Interment was in Fairview cemetery, Bedford.
The following obituary was included in the service.
Mary Elsina Rabourn Wyckoff, daughter of Jesse [Drexell] and Margaret Ann [Bear] Rabourn, was born in Roseville, Ill., July 29, 1878 and died April 13, 1963, aged 85 years, 8 months and 15 days.
At the age of 2 years she came with her parents to Missouri and spent her childhood near Sheridan, Mo.
On May 25, 1898, she was united in marriage to Louis Elmer Wyckoff of Bedford, Ia. To this union 14 children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers and five children, Beulah Belle, Lee Archer, Glen [Drexel], Rose [Alma] Cortner and Arthur [Elmer].
She is survived by [Joseph] Alva, Rex [Raymond], and [Carrie] Fay Pullen of Bedford, Leroy [Dallas] and Ross [Allen] of Des Moines, Ia., Fred [Edward] of Red Oak, Ia., [Esper] May Smith of Austin, Minn., Bonnie [Vesper] Weil of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Nina [Estella] Gaule of Conway, Ia. Besides her children she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Carrie [Verlinda] Churchill of Sheridan, Mo., 47 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and three stepchildren.
She became a member of the Advent Christian church 7 miles west of Sheridan at the age of 15 years. After her marriage she transferred her membership to the Christian church of Bedford.
She was also a 50-year member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
She was a hardy and hard workingwoman who spent her life in mothering her 14 children and 3 others to whom she was stepmother, and delighted in her role. She was uncomplaining and undemanding and always cheerful and she always encouraged her children to take their place in the church.

Arthur Wyckoff Died Here Monday
Arthur [Elmer] Wyckoff, 61, died at the Court Street Nursing Home in Bedford, Monday, February 1, where he had been taken only the day before. He had been sick the past several years.

Funeral services for Arthur [Elmer] Wyckoff, who died in Bedford, Monday, February first, were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Service on State Street, Thursday afternoon, February 4. Rev. Walter Ortmann officiated. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
Arthur Elmer Wyckoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. [ouis] E. [lmer] Wyckoff [Mary Elsina Rabourn], was born December 28, 1898 at Bedford, Iowa. On March 29, 1956, Mr. Wyckoff suffered a stroke, which made him bedfast, and he remained at his home with his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Shimer.
He was married to Essica G. [ladys] Shehan, October 25, 1920 at Corning, Iowa.
Mr. Wyckoff is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary [Elsina Rabourn] Wyckoff; two children, Rowena Shimer and husband of Bedford, Donald Wyckoff and wife of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; seven brothers and four sisters, [Joseph] Alva Wyckoff and Rex [Raymond] Wyckoff of Bedford, Leroy [Dallas] Wyckoff and Ross [Allen] Wyckoff of Des Moines, Fred [Edward] Wyckoff of Red Oak, Carl Wyckoff of St. Joseph, Eldon Wyckoff of Liberty, Mo., Mrs. [Carrie] Fay Pullen of Bedford, Mrs. Nina [Estella] Gaule of Conway, Mrs. Bonnie [Vesper] Weil of Gravity, Mrs. [Esper] May Smith of Austin, Minn.

Mr. Wyckoff lived in Bedford most of his life, being well known as a mechanic.

Mrs. Art Wyckoff Dies In Hospital
Mrs. Arthur Wyckoff of Bedford died in the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Tuesday, June 8, following an operation the day previous.
The funeral services were held at the Walker and Shum Funeral Home this afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robert Boshen. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.
Gladys Essica [Essica Gladys] daughter of Martha Ellen [Evans] and Earnest [John] Sheehan [Shehan], was born at Stillwell, Kans., Oct. 2, 1901, and was 35 years, 9 months and 6 days of age at the time of her death.
She was married to Arthur [Elmer] Wyckoff of Bedford, October 25, 1920. To this union were born two children, Rowena and Donald, both of the home.
She is survived by her husband and two children, her father and step mother; two brothers, [Henry] Scott Sheehan [Shehan] of Creston and Edgar [James] Sheehan [Shehan] of Kansas City, Kans., a sister, Mrs. Edna [Jane] Evans of Brooks, Iowa; two half brothers and a half sister, Johnnie and Robert Sheehan [Shehan] and Mrs. Maymie [Argella] Lewis, of Bedford.
Mrs. Wyckoff was a member of the Pentecostal Church.

Mrs. Rose Cortner Died At Greenfield
Mrs. Rose [Alma] Wyckoff Cortner, a former resident of Bedford, died following a heart attack Monday, February 1, at a hospital in Greenfield. Her home was near Fontanelle.
Funeral services will be held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Service at 708 State Street, at one oÕclock, Thursday afternoon, February 4. The Christian church minister from Clearfield will officiate. Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. James Cortner Rites In Bedford
Mrs. James Cortner, a native of Bedford, died at the hospital in Greenfield, Monday, February first.
Funeral services were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Service on State Street, Thursday afternoon, February 4, Rev. O. I. Mendenhall of Clearfield officiated. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
Rose Alma Wyckoff, daughter of Louis [Elmer] and Mary [Elsina Rabourn] Wyckoff, was born September 8, 1915 at Bedford, Iowa.
December 1, 1947 she was married to James [Clifford] Cortner, most of their married life having been spent in the Bedford and Greenfield communities. To this union three children were born: Joseph Max, Jolene Marie and Dixie Ann.
Mrs. Cortner had been in ill health for some time and since the first of the year had become increasingly worse and on January 30 was taken to the Greenfield hospital. She died at the age of 44 years, four months, 24 days.
She is survived by her husband, James [Clifford] Cortner; her mother, Mrs. Mary Wyckoff of Bedford; five children, Joy Louise Kinney of Winterset, James Harold, Joseph Max, Jolene Marie and Dixie Ann all of the home at Fontanelle; one grandchild, Jory Lynne Kinney of Winterset; seven brothers, Eldon Wyckoff of Liberty, Mo., Carl Wyckoff of St. Joseph, Leroy and Ross Wyckoff (RoseÕs twin) of Des Moines, Fred [Edward] Wyckoff of Red Oak, [Joseph] Alva and Rex [Raymond] Wyckoff of Bedford; four sisters, Mrs. [Esper] May Smith of Austin, Minn., Mrs. [Carrie] Fay Pullen of Bedford, Mrs. Nina [Estella] Gaule of Clearfield, Mrs. Bonnie [Vesper] Weil of Gravity.

She was a member of the Christian church in Clearfield.

Mrs. Bert Wyckoff Dies In St. Joseph
Mrs. Edith Ann [Greenlee] Wyckoff, 69, widow of Bert [Clyde] Wyckoff, died Sunday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Lowell Hubbard in St. Joseph. Mrs. Wyckoff made her home at 2831 Lafayette Street, in St. Joseph, where she lived for 45 years. She was born at Bedford.
Surviving are three other daughters, Mrs. Martha Carpenter and Mrs. Dorothy McKnight, St. Joseph, Mrs. Helen Eshnaur, West Palm Beach, Florida; two sons, Paul Wyckoff and Kenneth Wyckoff, St. Joseph; four sisters, Mrs. Cora Blake of Bedford, Mrs. Jennie Adams of Orofino, Idaho, Mrs. Tressie Miller of Fullerton, Calif.; Mrs. Fern Hatfield of Shambaugh; 18 grandchildren, three great grandchildren.
She was a past president of Local Branch No. 154 of the National Association of Letter Carriers Auxiliary and the Neil T. Sommers Auxiliary of Spanish-American War Veterans.
She united with the Baptist church in Bedford when a young girl and at the time of her death was a member of the Ashland Avenue Methodist Church.
Final rites were held Tuesday afternoon at Mierhoffer-Fleeman Chapel, the Rev. Louis Schowengerdt officiating. Burial in the Bedford Cemetery.

Young Lady Dead
Lelia [Leila] Edna, daughter of Lew [Louis Elmer] and Minnie [Etta Greenlee] Wyckoff, the latter gone before, died at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wyckoff [Barbara Jane Laird], Monday afternoon at 3:30, after a short illness from peritonitis. She was sick but a few days and then the friends thought but little about it, as she was so uncomplaining, but this is a verification of the old adage, ÒIn the midst of life we are in death.Ó This young girl was the picture of health and bid fair to live to a good old age, but she is no more. She was born in Bedford and was 17 years, 1 month and 1 day old. She was a member of the Christian Sunday school, but not a member of the church, though very recently had expressed her intention of becoming a member and trying to live a good pure life. We are often too late in putting our good intentions into practice. The safe way is to act now thus making our peace calling and election sure.
Lelia [Leila] leaves two brothers, four half brothers, her father and grandfather and mother to mourn her loss. The funeral took place from her grandfatherÕs residence at 2 oÕclock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Geo. A. Hendrickson, of the Christian church, assisted by the quartette. The pallbearers were from her Sunday school class, taught by the pastorÕs wife. They were: Aneth Hendrickson, Stella Hosman, Lena Blake, Levina Teague, Mamie Hamilton and Grace Henderson. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, and were tokens of sympathetic hearts. The remains were laid to rest in Fairview cemetery. C.

Obituary
Lelia [Leila] E. [dna], daughter of Lew [Louis Elmer] and Minnie [Etta Greenlee] Wyckoff, died at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wyckoff [Barbara Jane Laird], Monday, September 7, 1908, at 3:30, with a short sickness of inflammation of the bowels and stomach. She was sick but a few days, then the family did not apprehend any serious results---but in the midst of life we are in death is an old adage ever new. This young girl was only a child, and but a few days since was the picture of health, but is now in the grave. She was born in Bedford, and at the time of her death was 17 years, 1 month and 1 day old. She had always lived here and attended our public schools---went in and out among us in the many walks of life. This girl was a member of the Christian Sunday school and has been on the verge of accepting Christ as her personal savior, but the evil influences are always at our hand in time to thwart our good intentions, and so in this case. We know not what God will do with our good resolutions and good intentions, but this we know, that the safe way is to do now what may never be done if we neglect till the crucial time for decisive action is past.
Lelia [Leila] leaves two brothers, four half brothers, besides her father and grandfather to mourn her loss. The funeral took place from John WyckoffÕs residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 oÕclock, conducted by Rev. G. A. Hendrickson of the Christian church, the quartette furnishing appropriate music. The following were pallbearers and were all from her Sunday School class: Aneth Hendrickson, Stella Hosman, Lena Blake, Levina Teague, Mamie Hamilton and Grace Henderson. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, and came from hearts overflowing with sympathy for the sorrowing. The body was laid to rest in Fairview.

The remains of the four months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. [ert] C. [lyde] Wyckoff [Edith Ann Greenlee], Mary Elizabeth, were brought to Bedford on the noon train Thursday from St. Joseph. The funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. WyckoffÕs parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. [harles] A. [ustin] Greenlee [Sylvia Hinshaw], at 2:30 oÕclock Thursday afternoon [January 16], conducted by Rev. William B. Thompson. Interment was made in the Bedford cemetery. The child had pneumonia and was sick only a day. M. E. Wyckoff Services Held In Liberty, Mo.
Last rites for Moran Eldon Wyckoff, 90, were held July 26 in Liberty, Mo., and burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Liberty. Mr. Wyckoff died July 23, 1984 at the nursing home in Liberty where he lived.
Mr. Wyckoff was born in Bedford, Iowa, and had lived in Liberty since 1920. Mr. Wyckoff was a millwright for the Volney Felt Co. before he retired in 1963. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church, 309 E. Franklin St., Liberty.
He leaves three sons, Eldon Wyckoff, Excelsior Springs, Donald Wyckoff, Independence, and Edward Wyckoff, Liberty; four brothers, Rex [Raymond] Wyckoff, Bedford, Fred [Edward] Wyckoff, Red Oak, and Ross [Allen] Wyckoff and Leroy [Dallas] Wyckoff of Des Moines; four sisters, Mrs. [Esper] May Smith, Blooming Prairie, Mn., Mrs. Nina [Estella] Gaule and Mrs. [Carrie] Fay Pullen of Bedford and Mrs. Bonnie [Vesper] Weil, Cheyenne, Wyo.; six grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Final Rites Held In Bedford For Alva Wyckoff, 71
Funeral services for Joseph Alva Wyckoff, 71, of Bedford, Ia., held November 18 in the Bedford United Christian-Presbyterian Church, were officiated by Rev. Marcia Smith. Mr. Wyckoff died November 15, 1981 in Greater Community Hospital, Creston. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Joseph Alva Wyckoff, son of Louis Elmer and Mary Elsina [Rabourn] Wyckoff, was born in Bedford September 25, 1910. He lived in Bedford where he grew to maturity and attended the Christian Church and was graduated from Bedford High School in 1929.
On November 26, 1936 he was united in marriage to Doris David at Kansas City, Kans., and they lived in Bedford. To this union two children were born: David Lynn Wyckoff and Diane Elaine Hertzenberg.
He was employed by Cudahy Packing Co. in Bedford for 23 years and was custodian at Bedford High School for 14 years.
Mr. Wyckoff was a member of the Christian Church and later the United Christian-Presbyterian Church when these two churches merged.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Arthur [Elmer] and Glen [Drexel], and one sister, Rose [Alma].
Left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Doris; children; four sisters, [Esper] May Smith, Austin, Minn.; [Carrie] Fay Pullen, Henderson, Ia.; Bonnie [Vesper] Weil, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Nina [Estella] Gaule, Bedford; four brothers: Ross [Allen] and Leroy [Dallas] of Des Moines; Fred [Edward] of Red Oak; and Rex [Raymond] of Bedford; eight grandchildren: Lori Lynn, Mark and Scott Wyckoff; Kristen Ann and Lauren Michelle Hertzenberg; step grandchildren: Kara, Bill and Kirk Hertzenberg; a half-brother, [Moran] Eldon Wyckoff, of Liberty, Mo.
Mr. Wyckoff was a kind and considerate husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who loved him.

Blanche Wyckoff Rites Monday
Funeral services for Mrs. Blanche [Estella Whitlock] Wyckoff, 68, of Des Moines were held Monday Oct. 5 at ArnoldÕs Highland Park Funeral Home in Des Moines. Mrs. Wyckoff died Friday at Iowa Methodist Hospital after a four-week illness. Interment was at Resthaven Cemetery.

Obituary – George Rabourn
George Reed Rabourn, oldest son of Jesse D. [rexel] and Margaret Ann [Bear] Rabourn, was born October 17, 1862, near Roseville, Illinois, and died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Dall [las] Churchill [Carrie Verlinda] in Sheridan, July 26 at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 10 days, following a lingering illness. At the age of 17 years he was baptized in the Baptist faith. He was married to Louesa Mitchell, March 15, 1887 in Nodaway County Missouri. To them one daughter was born, who preceded him in death.
He resided in Bedford at one time and had made his home in Parnell until recently.
He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Dall [las] Churchill [Carrie Verlinda] and Mrs. [Mary] Elsina Wyckoff; two grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. His wife and daughter, Mabel Fox, his parents and three brothers, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at the Sheridan Methodist Church, Friday, July 29, with Rev. E. S. Tschetter officiating. Burial was in Luteston cemetery.
