L. J. Myers

The subject of the following sketch was the father of W. [alter] E. [dward] Myers who resides east of Bedford and of V. [ern] W. [elcome] Myers of Conway:

The silent messenger came quietly and removed one of AftonÕs citizens.  The call came Monday night, or rather early Tuesday morning, and Lewis J. [ackson] Myers answered.  For several weeks he had been seriously ill, yet only a few close relatives and intimate friends knew of his condition.  For fifteen years Afton has been his home and he enjoyed the friendship of many of this community.  Kind, cheerful, always a pleasant word or deed, he will be missed by many.  He was the father of the publishers of this paper and always took a great interest in the work of the office and the response to the things the paper was trying to do.  His occupation in early life was farming, in later years doing carpenter work until failing eyesight made this impossible.

Lewis Jackson Myers was born in Osceola, Iowa, December 18th, 1853, and passed from this life Tuesday, June 19, 1928, being a little over 74 years of age.  Soon after his birth his parents moved over into Adams County where he grew to manhood.  It was there that he was married to Miss Josephine Sisk on September 15, 1875.  In the early eighties they moved to near Neligh, Neb., making that their home for 13 years when they returned to Iowa, settling at Conway in Taylor County.  During the next few years the family lived in Macon and Hannibal, Mo., Butte, Mont., and Stockton, Kans., coming to Afton in 1913, which has since been their home.  He was the father of eight sons, who together with his companion survive him.  The sons are: W. [alter] E. [dward] of Bedford, Ia.; O. [rville] T. [heron] of Afton, Ia.; Frank L. [arue] of Macon, Mo.; Marshall [Ralph] of Afton, Ia.; Vern W. [elcome] of Conway, Ia.; G. [rover] T. [hurman] of Milwaukee, Wis.; Glenn D. [ee] of Butte, Montana; and [Noah] Russell of Afton, Iowa.

At the age of 24 years he joined the Christian church and all during his life lived a true and consistent Christian life.  He was quiet and unassuming, loved his home and family and loved to assist them.  One of the happiest days of his life was when the boys all came home to assist in the celebration of the golden wedding of their father and mother almost three years ago.

Funeral services were held yesterday at one oÕclock at the late home in Afton, conducted by Rev. M. E. Shank of the Evangelical church and the body taken to the old home in Adams County and interred in the cemetery at Brooks.---Afton Star-Enterprise
