Mrs. John R.  Derrickson

Miss Margaret M. [ary] Fitzgerald was born in Alleghany County, N. Y., February 11, 1852, and died at her home in Bedford, Iowa, February 3, 1909.  She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Fitzgerald [Adeline Harris], and with her parents moved to Michigan in 1859, and from there to DeKalb County, Ill., the following year.  While living there in 1863 she united with the Baptist church, of which she has since been a faithful and consistent member.  The family then moved to Taylor County, and on August 22, 1867, she was united in marriage to Mr. John R. Derrickson of this city.  This has since been their home.

To this union three children were born; two sons, Arthur and [Albert] Edward died when quite young, and the daughter, Nellie [May], now Mrs. E. [dwin] S.[tanton] Van Sickle, of this city.

Mrs. Derrickson has been quite prominent in church and W. R. C. circles, doing even more than her strength warranted.  For the past twelve years she has been an invalid.  She was a lover of her home and as mother and wife she was a model for any to emulate.  She was a companion as well to her husband and daughter and to her they both were devoted in return.  Their home life was ideal but the deceased always found time to aid and assist others.  She will be sadly missed by all.  Although suffering for years as she has, she was always among the most cheerful of any in any gathering in which she was found.  She is gone and her place is vacant in the circles of the home, the church, the W. R. C. and the social circles, but her deeds and example will live long after her.  She was one of the leading spirits in the old soldiersÕ picnic at the fair grounds last fall, and all who attended that pleasant gathering will remember her as on that occasion.

Aside from a heart broken husband and daughter, she leaves to mourn, her father, Edward Fitzgerald, near New Market; two sisters, Mrs. Roscoe Savage [Ella Jane], New Market, and Mrs. C. A. [James M.] Nelson [Sarah Cecelia], Greenleaf, Kansas, and one brother, [James] Martin Fitzgerald, of Truro, Iowa, all of whom, except the latter, are here.

Mrs. Derrickson has suffered acutely for the past seven weeks, and while her death was not unexpected it falls as a severe blow upon her many friends.

The funeral will be held tomorrow, Friday, afternoon, at 2 oÕclock, at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. D. McMasters, and interment will be in the Bedford cemetery.  The remains can be viewed by the friends at the home from 8 a. m. to 1 p. m. Friday.

The heartfelt sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones.

Death of Mrs. Derrickson
After weeks of intense suffering Mrs. John Derrickson passed away at her home in southeast Bedford on Wednesday afternoon at 3:05 o'clock, aged 56 years, 11 months and 22 days.
The funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, at 2 p. m. at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. D. McMasters. Interment at Bedford cemetery. The casket will be open at the home from 8 o'clock Friday morning until 1 p. m. The Relief Corps will conduct the exercises at the cemetery.
Margaret M. [ary] FitzGerald was born in the state of New York on February 11, 1852. When only a child she removed with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward FitzGerald, to Taylor county and settled near Bedford. Here she was wooed and won by the husband, John Derrickson, with whom she lived a life of happiness and contentment for more than two score years. Their wedding ceremony was performed by Elder James Smith, at the home of the bride's parents.
Three children came to bless this union but the two first born, Edward and Arthur, passed away in childhood. The daughter, Nellie, grew to womanhood and is now the wife of E. S. Van Sickle of this place.
Than Mrs. Derrickson no woman in all our city had more true friends or stood higher in the regard of all who knew her. A noble Christian woman she was indeed, and her death has brought sincere sorrow and poignant grief to all who knew and loved her.

Mrs. E. S. Van Sickle – A message was received here Monday from Idaho Falls conveying the sad news of the death of Mrs. E.[dwin] S. [tanton] Van Sickle and that the remains would be brought here for burial.
Mrs. VanSickle, who is the daughter of John R. Derrickson, has been quite ill for several months past, but her friends here were unprepared for this sad announcement. A. B. Derrickson

Once again grim death has visited our community and taken from our midst one of the early pioneers of Taylor County.

Andrew [R.] Derrickson, aged 77 years, died at the home of his son, four miles south of Bedford, April 27, 1895.

A. [ndrew] B. [R.] Derrickson was born in New Jersey on the 7th day of January 1818.   He moved to Shelby County, Indiana, in 1821, where he united with the Missionary Baptist church at the age of 23 years.  He was married to Mary Midkiff in 1841 and in 1853 they came to Taylor County, where they have since resided, except for the few years during which time they again made their home in Indiana.

The funeral services were held in the Berea church, south of town, on Sunday afternoon, April 28, and were conducted by Rev. J. C. Lewis.  The remains were interred in the old Bedford cemetery.

Two boys and one daughter are all that remain of his family to mourn the loss of a kind father and indulgent parent.

William Derrickson

William [Albert] Derrickson, son of Andrew and Mary [Midkiff] Derrickson, was born on October 12th, 1855, near Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa, and departed this life from his home in Bedford, Iowa, aged 73 years, 9 months and 6 days, he being the last of six children.  Mr. Derrickson was born on a farm near Bedford where he lived until he was 5 years of age, when he moved with his parents to the State of Indiana from which state he returned when he was 19 years of age, having spent almost seventy years in the state of Iowa.  On the 24th day of March, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Jane Fulton, and to this union nine children were born, five having passed away prior to his death.  Those left to mourn his departure are as follows:  his good wife, Mrs. William Derrickson, Jesse, Mrs. Russell Locke [Rebecca Esther], Mrs. Marion Mohler [Lucy May] and Floyd [Fulton], all of Bedford.   He also leaves two nephews, Sam Stevens of Omaha, Nebraska, and Elmer Derrickson of Buffalo, Mo., and one niece, Mrs. Walter Dougherty [Ida Derrickson] of Seattle, Washington.  He leaves seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.  In addition to those mentioned he leaves other friends who are very near and dear.  At the age of 25 years he united with the Christian Church; while his health was such that he could not attend, he was always there in spirit.  For 9 years, Mr. Derrickson has been a very patient invalid and cared for [by] his dear wife and children.  Much credit is due them for the very faithful manner in which they looked toward his every need.  It is with a sad heart we lay to rest these old pioneers who were willing to withstand the wintry blast in order that we might have such a wonderful state.  Their ranks are growing thinner each year, which suggests that the old time struggle will soon be a matter of history.

Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 oÕclock, conducted by Rev. C. M. Crowell.  Interment was made in the Bedford cemetery.
