[Blake, Hollie Powell]

Taylor County Herald

Thursday    April 6, 1933

Mrs. P. A. Blake

Hollie G. Powell was born near New Windsor, Ill., Oct. 10, 1875, and passed to her eternal home on Thursday morning at about nine oÕclock March 29, 1933, age 57 years, 5 months and 19 days.

When about two and one half years of age she moved with her parents to a farm about a mile and a half east of Conway.  This was her home until 1903 when she moved to Bedford.

She was married to Perley A. [rthur] Blake on March 20, 1906, at her home here in Bedford, and this has been her home since her marriage.  One child, a daughter, Lucille, was born to this union.

Mrs. Blake was a lover of home and yet found time to be with her husband in the store when needed.  She became well known to the people of the town and community and had many friends and acquaintances over the entire county.  She was always pleasant to meet and made friends easily and held them well.

For six months or more she has not been in the best of health but it was not until late in the last year that her husband became worried about her condition.  In her quiet determined way she went ahead with her work at home and at the store and those who met her little dreamed that she was not in the best of health.  Soon after Christmas she had to give up and went home.  All has been done that love and medical skill could do to bring her back to health but both love and skill fought a losing battle.  If hope and courage could have brought back health she would have won for she had both to an unusual degree.  Like one who Òfolds the drapery of her couch about her and lies down to pleasant dreamsÓ she slipped away to that land where suffering is a stranger.

She began the Christian life when quite young in years and united with the Methodist Church at Conway.   After her marriage she transferred her membership to the Bedford Church and has been a member of this church for about 25 years.  With a busy life at home and at the store she did not give as much time to church work as she doubtless would have otherwise, but she has always had a real interest in the church and its work.

Mrs. Blake has three brothers, Bert and Clint Powell of Conway and Cliff Powell of Omaha, all of whom were present for the funeral service.  There is one nephew, Earl Powell of Corning and one niece, Bessie P. Ford of Gray, Canada.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon at two oÕclock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. R. Talley, and burial was made at Conway cemetery.

R. M. Powell

R. [obert] M. [assie] Powell was born in New Hampshire County, Va., June 2nd, 1836.  When he was about one year old his parents [Horatio Nelson Powell and Elizabeth Ely] moved to Illinois where he resided until 1873.

February 20, 1873, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth J. [ane] Chiles and to them were born four children, viz B. E. and C. H., residing at Conway; C. D. at Loveland, Colorado and Mrs. P. [erley] A. [rthur] Blake [Hollie], of Bedford.  In 1875 Mr. Powell came to Taylor County, Iowa, and has resided here until his death, which occurred suddenly at his home in Bedford Saturday Nov. 6th at 4:30 p. m.

There were eleven children in his fatherÕs family, six of whom preceded him in death and one brother and three sisters remain.

His wife, three sons and one daughter survive him and today are bowed beneath their sorrow which none of us escape and yet never loses its poignancy though the scene of death may grow familiar and men are kept busy digging our graves.

Mr. Powell was a man of sterling integrity and worth, whom men respected and loved, and the community was greatly shocked when the news of his sudden death became known.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fred N. Willis and after brief services at the home the remains were taken to Conway, where neighbors and friends crowded the church to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed and after the service there the burial was in the Conway cemetery.

The pallbearers were R. W. Robinson, D. Roberts, J. E. DeHaven, J. R. Cooper, John Dotts, W. D. Blakemore.
