Last Rites held Nov. 21 For Mrs. Ed Ahrens

Funeral services for Mrs. Ed (Opal) Ahrens, 86, well known long time Bedford resident and wife of the late Ed Ahrens, Bedford businessman, were held November 21 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford conducted by Rev. Ray McCain.  Mrs. Ahrens died November 19 at Clearview Nursing Home in Mt. Ayr.  Interment was in the Mausoleum, Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Opal Donnelson [Donaldson], daughter of Richard and Elnora Denton Donnelson [Donaldson], was born at Greenview, Illinois, February 3, 1886.

She moved with her parents to Taylor County, Iowa when she was 13 years of age and the family located on a farm northeast of Bedford where they lived until moving into Bedford.

She was united in marriage to Edward U. Ahrens on May 20, 1914, at the home of her parents in Bedford with the Rev. J. A. Currie officiating.  To them was born a daughter, Peggy, who died in infancy May 2, 1926.

She was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church.

The Ahrens Drug Store was operated by them from 1910 until Mr. AhrensÕs death, September 8, 1963.

Mrs. Ahrens had lived at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mt. Ayr for the past several years.

One cousin, Cleo Denton, of Greenview, Illinois, survives her.

She was a kind and considerate daughter, wife, loved one and friend and pleasant memories of her life and friendship will remain in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.

James Arthur Pullan

James Arthur Pullan, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. James Pullan III of New Market, was born in Maryville, Mo., Jan. 14, 1938 and passed away at the University Hospital in Iowa City June 11, 1938 at the age of 4 months and 28 days.

Burial services were held at the Memory Cemetery at 2:30 p. m. Sunday, June 12, 1938, by Rev. Mr. Shackleford.

Maggie Axel, 85, Rites April 8

Funeral services for Mrs. Fay (Maggie) Axel, 85, of Blockton, held April 8 at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home on Madison Street, were conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mrs. Axel died April 4, 1966 in Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr.  Interment was at Shearer Cemetery in Page County.

Maggie Florence Fishell, daughter of Jacob L. [ewis] and Susan Caroline [Fortwangler] Fishell, was born November 3, 1880 in Warren County, Ill.  At the age of three she moved with her parents to a farm near Braddyville, Iowa.

At an early age she united with the Methodist church, services at that time being held in the Nixon school building, not far from her parentsÕ home.

On November 5, 1900 she was united in marriage to Fay Walter Axel.  To this union three sons were born:  Lester, Walter [Lewis] and Lloyd.  They lived in Page and Taylor counties and then moved to the state of Colorado, where they lived many years.  Nine years ago she, with two sons, moved to their present home north of Blockton, Iowa.

Her parents, one brother, Alfred, and husband preceded her in death.

Surviving her, in addition to the two sons in the home, a son, Lloyd, and wife of Golden, Colo., who were unable to attend the service; three brothers, Norman Fishell of Clearmont, Mo., Leonard Fishell of New Market, Myrle Fishell of Brooks, Ia.; two sisters, Mae Blackford of Shelby, Mont., Faye Stickelman of Blockton; one brother-in-law, Dow Stickelman of Blockton; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Fishell of New Market, Sabitha Fishell of Brooks; several nephews, nieces and many friends.

She was a lover of nature and as long as she was able to, she worked in her flowers.  She will be greatly missed by her loved ones.

Jesse Masker Rites April 7

Funeral services for Jesse Lee Masker, 83, long time Taylor County resident, held April 7 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home on State St., were conducted by Rev. Ivo Randels.  Mr. Masker died April 14 in a hospital in Denver, Colo.  Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Jesse Lee Masker, son of Theodore and Mary [Ann Walker] Masker, was born Jan. 9, 1883 at Conway, Ia.  He lived all of his life in Taylor County except one year in Colorado.

He was married to Jessie [Florence] Konecne Sept. 23, 1907 and to this union two children were born, Bernice Chaffin of Glenwood, Ia. and Max Lee Masker of Arvada, Colo.

Those surviving are his wife, Jessie; one daughter, Mrs. Bernice Chaffin; one son, Max Lee Masker; daughter-in-law, Irene Masker; three granddaughters, Marilyn Fleming, Cathy Chaffin, and Carolyn Smith; three great grandchildren, Diane and Morris Fleming, and Barbara Smith.

He was a kind and loving husband and father.  His life was home and work centered.  It was difficult for him to retire, and he worked as strength would allow until last fall.

E. W. Masker Died At Gravity Thursday

E. W. Masker of Gravity died at his home there Thursday, July 30.  Funeral services were held at the Gravity Methodist church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Frank L. Greenwood, pastor of the church.  Burial in Gravity cemetery.

Elijah Wilson Masker, son of Benjamin W. [right] and Mary [Ann] Cole Masker, was born in Morrow County, Ohio, June 30, 1861, and passed away at the age of 98 years and one month.

After the Civil War he came with his parents to eastern Iowa and his family later moved to Carroll County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.

Mr. Masker moved to a farm in Taylor County in 1921 and in 1936 to Gravity, where he resided until his death.

Mr. Masker had two sisters and two brothers.  One sister and two brothers preceded him in death.

He leaves one sister, Miss Orra [Ora Leota] Masker of Gravity, several nephews and nieces.

Waldo Stickelman Rites Held June 22

Funeral services for Waldo S. Stickelman, 92, of Blockton, were held June 22, 1972, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. George Swan officiating.  Mr. Stickelman died June 19 in Ringgold County Hospital.  Interment was at Graceland Cemetery, Taylor County.

Waldo Shaner Stickelman was born June 1, 1880, on a farm near Siam, Taylor County, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Stickelman and Jennie Havner Stickelman; a brother, Loren E. [mmitt], four sisters, Velma Ostrander, Allie Maud, Minnie Dell Lygum Bertrand, and Girda Blanche John.

He is survived by his wife, Clara; brother, Carl, and wife, May; two nephews, Vearon John, and wife, Ruth; Albert John and wife Alice and family; nieces, Mrs. Byron Stephenson, and Mrs. Hugh McMullin and their families; Mrs. Ray Docken and nephew, Anthony Lygum; cousins, Nellie Cobb and Lonecia [Lonesa] Bradley and Iva Glover of Bedford; other cousins.

Waldo was foreman and supervisor for the Chicago Great Western Railway Bridge and Building Department for many years.

After his retirement he maintained the home and cared for his sister Allie.  During this period of time he did carpentry work in Blockton.

On December 15, 1961, he married Clara Bellus.  During that year he made his commitment to his Savior.  Since then he was a faithful member of the Christian Church until failing health prevented his attending.

Former Resident Dies

Word came Thursday that Mrs. W. [illiam] C. [harles] Ostrander of Barstow, California had passed away at her home Wednesday evening after a lingering illness.  The funeral service was held in Barstow Friday and burial was in Monte Ceto Memorial Park, San Bernardino, California.

Mrs. Ostrander is remembered here as Miss Velma [Marie] Stickelman and the family home had been in this community until they moved to California five years ago.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. B. [yron] E. Stevenson of Colton, California and Miss Elizabeth Ostrander of the home; and two grandchildren.  Relatives here are a sister and brothers, Miss Allie Stickelman, L. [oren] E.[mmitt] Stickelman and W. [aldo] S. [haner] Stickelman; also C. [arl] A.[ustin] Stickelman of Peru.  W. [aldo] S. [haner] Stickelman has been in Barstow several months helping care for Mrs. Ostrander.

Paul Laipple Funeral Services Are Held Today

Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at the Christian church in Hopkins for Paul Laipple, 82 years old, who died about midnight Wednesday at his home in Hopkins following a long illness.

Rev. B. H. Harmon, pastor of the Woodson Chapel Christian church of St. Joseph, assisted by Rev. P. H. Peterson, pastor of the Christian church of Hopkins, officiated.  Burial was in the Hopkins cemetery.

Born April 22, 1862, at Fostoria, Ohio, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Paul Laipple, he moved to Morgan County, Mo., with his parents when a small boy.  The family settled near Florence and Sedalia, Mo., where he grew to manhood.

He was married April 22, 1889, at Eminence, Mo., to Miss Marietta Norton of Bedford, Ia.  As a young man he was engaged in the blacksmith business and located at Bedford, where he resided until 1904 when he moved to Hopkins.  He continued with his blacksmith business until five years ago when ill health forced him to retire.

Mr. Laipple was a member of the Christian church and the Masonic lodge of Hopkins.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Amy, of the home; one son, Myron Laipple, of Glendale, Calif., and three grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a son, Charles W., and a daughter, Edra Kathryn.

Hopkins Woman Dies At Age 85

Mrs. Marietta [Norton] Laipple, age 85, resident of Hopkins for 48 years, died suddenly at noon Saturday at her home.  Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. tomorrow at the Christian church in Hopkins of which she was a member.  The services will be conducted by the Rev. C. A. Abbott, of Blockton, Ia., formerly pastor of the Hopkins church, and burial will be in the Hopkins cemetery.

Mrs. Laipple is survived by her daughter, Miss Amy Laipple of the home, and three grandchildren living in California.  Her husband, Paul Laipple, died in 1944.

An Old Timer of Taylor County Is Called

Geo. Greenwood, Old Settler, Was Buried Here Tuesday

One of the old residents of Taylor County was buried here on Tuesday afternoon.  Geo. [Withers] Greenwood, who for many years lived ten miles west of Bedford, but for the past few years has made his home in Minneapolis with his daughter, died there and was brought here for burial.  The body was shipped from Minneapolis to New Market, and on Tuesday the funeral services were held at the home of Frank Steele.  Burial was made here in Fairview cemetery.

Chauncey Moore Obituary

Chauncey [Chauncy] Vane Moore, son of Ira [Alvin] and Cenia [Riley] [Moore, was born March 9, 1899, near Gravity and died August 22, at the age of 54 years, 5 months and 13 days in the Veterans hospital, Des Moines.

On May 30, 1918, he enlisted with Battery D, 67th Artillery, at Casper, Wyo., and served in France [and] Italy during World War I.

On Feb. 5, 1921, he was married to Miss Verla Marie Utter of Gravity.  To them were born two sons, [Chauncy] Ronald and Robert [Dean] and one daughter, Kathryn.

He was a member of Legion Post 578; Masonic lodge, Rebekah and Odd Fellow lodges of Gravity.  He had been a member of the Gravity Christian Church for many years.  He spent his entire married life on a farm near Gravity.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and son, Robert, who was killed in action in Italy during World War II.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Verla; one son, Ronald of Bedford; one daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Harvey of Clarinda; four grandchildren, Jerry, Jeanne and Jimmie Moore and Sharon Lynn Harvey; five sisters, Mrs. Cora Gold of Council Bluffs, Tressie Moore, Conway, Leona Morgan, Newton, Iva [Florence] Dougherty, Gravity, Lucille Burwell, New Market; three brothers, Alvin, Nebraska City, Harold, Omaha, Edward, Conway; twenty-eight nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted from the Christian church at Gravity, August 25, by Rev. Ben Sinderson of Adel, Iowa.  Burial in Washington cemetery.

Moore Rites Here Wed. Afternoon

Last rites for Ronnie Moore were held at the Christian church in Bedford Wednesday afternoon, March 8, conducted by Rev. Fred H. Cowles of Leavenworth, Kansas, a former Bedford minister.  Burial was in Fairview cemetery with Masonic and military services at the grave.

Chauncy Ronald Moore, son of Chauncy [Vane] and Verla [Marie Utter] Moore, was born at Gravity, Iowa, Feb. 2, 1922, and departed this life March 4, 1961, at the age of 39 years, one month, two days.

Ronnie graduated from Gravity High School in 1939, and on Nov. 23, 1942 he enlisted in the Army and was sent to Fort Cook, Nebr.  He spent two years overseas and on Jan. 26, 1946, received an honorable discharge.

On November 24, 1947 he was united in marriage to Hazel Dawson and to this union four children were born.

Ronnie was a member of the Christian church at Gravity, of Taylor Lodge No. 156 A. F. & A. M. of Bedford, and of the American Legion Post 164 of Bedford.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel; and children:  Jerry 13, Jeanne Ann 11, Jimmy 9 and Jackie 5; his mother, Mrs. Verla Moore of Gravity; one sister, Kathryn Higgins of Griswold; his grandmother, Mrs. Carrie Utter of Gravity.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chauncy [Vane] Moore on August 23, 1953; by one brother, Robert [Dean], who lost his life in service on May 8, 1944.

Ronnie had lived in Bedford the past eight years.  For a time he worked for Beemer-Gold Oil company, and for the past six years with the State Highway Commission.

Funeral services for Mrs. Chauncy (Verla Marie) Moore, 80, of Gravity, held March 11 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Rev. Mel Smith.  Mrs. Moore died March 7, 1978 in Rosary Hospital in Corning.  Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Verla Marie, daughter of Tommy [Thomas Morgan] and Carrie [Marie Rogers] Utter, was born September 3, 1897 in Taylor County, Iowa.

On February 5, 1921, Verla was united in marriage to Chauncy [Vane] Moore.  To this union three children were born:  [Chauncy] Ronald, Robert [Dean] and Kathryn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1953, three brothers, Gail, Harold and Melvin Utter, two sons, Robert in 1944 and Ronald in 1961.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kathryn Higgins and her husband, Larry, whom Verla loved as a son; two sisters, Pauline Clemens of Colonial Manor in Corning and Mrs. Osie Briggs, Michigan Center, Michigan; one brother, Wayne Utter of Holt, Michigan; 11 grandchildren, Jerry Moore, San Jose, Calif.; Jeanne Cook, Phoenix, Ariz.; Jack Moore, San Francisco, Calif.; Jim Moore, Phoenix, Ariz.; Sharon Burns, Canon City, Colo.; David Higgins, Creston, Ia.; Kathy Thompson, Red Oak, Ia.; D. D., Bonnie, Steven and Stacey Higgins of Bedford; five great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and other relatives.

She was a member of the Christian Church, Rebekah Circle and American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a kind and considerate mother and grandmother.

Earl Coy Burial At Gravity Thursday

Last rites for Earl Coy, Bedford barber, were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home on State Street, Thursday afternoon, March 9.  Rev. Ross Keyt of Gravity officiated.  Burial in the Gravity cemetery.

Earl William Coy, son of Lewis [Ashford] and Annie [Anna Belle Savage] Coy, was born May 25, 1902 near Gravity and departed this life at his home in Bedford, Tuesday, March 7, 1961 at the age of 58 years, 10 months, 10 days.

On July 20, 1933 he was united in marriage to Eva Adams Utter.  Most of his early life was spent in and near Gravity, moving to Bedford five years ago.  He worked 33 years at the barber trade and 10 years with the State Highway Commission.

He is survived by his wife Eva of the home; two step-children, Donald Utter and Dorothea Huntsman, whom he reared and loved as his own; four grandchildren, Gail and Dennis Utter, Wayne and Linda Huntsman; one sister, Mrs. Ferne Beemer of Gravity; a brother, Nolan Coy of Lander, Wyo.; a niece, Delores Hasquet, two nephews, Quentin Beemer and Donald Coy.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and one sister.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He had been ill for a long time with heart disease.  His wife, one daughter, three grandsons and one great grandson survive him.

Simon A. Jarvis

Simon A. Jarvis, son of Joel A. [lexander] and Eliza B. [Parkinson] Jarvis, was born in Perry County, Ohio, February 25, 1867.  When he was five years old he came with his parents and five brothers and three sisters in a covered wagon to Iowa.  He was the last remaining member of this family.

On May 31, 1887 he was united in marriage to Laura B. Parkinson. To this union were born six children, five of whom preceded him in death.

In early manhood he united with the Baptist Church of Clearfield and later transferred his membership to the Christian Church.

He passed away in the early morning of April 12, 1945 at his home in Clearfield.

Simon had many friends, both old and young. He was a devoted husband and father and cared a great deal for his home.

He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Bert [Delbert Eugene] Lyddon [Edna Ruth], three grandsons and one great grandson, who loved him dearly, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p m. at Crew's Funeral home.  Rev. C. M. Rowe officiated. The flowers were wonderful. Interment was in Bethel Cemetery, under some large cedars planted long ago by Mr. Jarvis himself.

Services Held Dec. 20 For Alma May Fawcett

Services were held December 20, for Alma May Shimer Fawcett, who died December 18 in Cedar Rapids, Ia.  Services were held at the Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah.  Rev. Raymond C. Lott, Jr., officiated.  Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Alma May Shimer Fawcett was born July 4, 1891, in Atchison County, Mo.  She married James Pedley Fawcett December 30, 1908, at Bedford and to this union two sons, John Francis and Alden Pedley, and one daughter, Snowy, was born.

She was a member of the Methodist Church of Gravity when a young girl.  The family moved to Shenandoah in 1927 where they lived until the past two years, when Alma made her home in Cedar Rapids.

She is survived by her son, Alden of Cedar Rapids; brother Chester Shimer of Sharpsburg; three grandsons, Michael of Lake Forest, Ill., Jonathan and Anthony, Cedar Rapids, and three great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son, John Francis, who died in infancy; her husband, James, and daughter, Snowy.
