Roy Kernen, 16, Dies Last Saturday A. M.

He had been in poor health for nearly two years.  Part of that time he was confined to his bed.

In 1929 he enrolled as a freshman in Bedford high school.  Although he was in school a good part of the time, Roy failed to finish his sophomore and junior years.

In February 1930, he became a member of the local Methodist church and took an active interest in all Sunday school and church work.

Roy Kernan

Roy Edmund Kernan [Kernen], oldest son of Carl and Estella Kernen, was born at the Kernen home near Bedford on September 26, 1916, and passed into life eternal on Saturday morning about ten oÕclock, November 26, 1932, at the age of 16 years and 2 months.

Nearly two years ago it was noticed that he was not in the best of health.  In March and April of that year he was confined to his bed, but a little later his health seemed to improve, but since that time there has been a gradual decline in health until death came on last Saturday.  During his sickness his parents sought every way to find a pathway back to health.  Loving hands and hearts certainly could have done nothing more than they did.  During all these months of sickness, the remarkable fact was his sweet disposition and his uncomplaining attitude.  In his characteristic quiet way he did not give up the hope that he was going to get well and even just a few days before his death said he would be well by Christmas.

Roy had entered the high school of Bedford in September 1929, and had completed his freshman year. Broken health prevented him finishing the sophomore and junior years, although he was in school part of each of those years.

In his quiet way he had won a large circle of friends.  And once he had given you his friendship, that friendship was of the truest, staunchest type.  Obedient always at home, he was the same at school.  He had so many of the fine qualities in his character that we wonder why he could not have been spared to live out those fine qualities during a long lifetime.

Together with his brother and sister, he had joined the Methodist church in February, 1930.  He has been in church and Sunday school whenever his health would permit.  His love for bible study has been shown in the fact that during his sickness there has scarcely been a day but that he has read his Bible.

The funeral service was held at the home on Monday afternoon at 2 oÕclock, conducted by Rev. Mr. R. Talley, and the body laid to rest in Lexington cemetery.
