"Ted" Hindman, 83, Dies Here Nov. 10

Ira ÒTedÓ Hindman, 83, a barber in Bedford for many years, died at the Armstrong Nursing Home about noon Friday, November 10.  He had been in failing health for several years.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. L. Hufstader.  Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

He is survived by one son, Harry Hindman, who resides in Illinois.  Also by two brothers, one in St. Joseph, Mo., and the other at Anamosa, Iowa.  His wife and two sons preceded him in death.

Miss Edna Lacy Dies At Home Here

Miss Edna Lacy, a life-long resident of Bedford, died at her home Friday, April 21.  Funeral services were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home on State Street Monday afternoon.  Rev. Ivo Randels, pastor of the Christian Church, officiated.  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

Edna May Lacy, youngest daughter of Joseph L. [emon] and Anna A. [rdella Wight] Lacy, was born September 13, 1897 at Bedford, Iowa, and passed away at the age of 63 years, seven months, eight days.

She was preceded in death by her father, mother, and one sister, Mrs. Faye Cobb.  She leaves to mourn her passing one brother, John C. [leveland] Lacy and wife of Bedford; uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

She joined the Church of Christ at Berea at an early age and after moving to Bedford, attended the Christian Church.

Until the last year, she had taken care of many children, loving them all as if they were her own.

Last Rites Held May 6 for John Lacy, 82

Funeral services for John Cleveland Lacy, 82, of Bedford, held here May 6 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Rev. C. Ray McCain and Carl Cummings.  Mr. Lacy died in Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, May 4, 1975.  Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

John Cleveland Lacy was born on August 20, 1892 in Taylor County, the son of Joseph L. [emon] Lacy and Anna Wight Lacy.  His life was spent in Taylor County.

As an adult, he farmed south of Bedford until 1943, when he moved to town and went into business.

On February 15, 1920, he was wed to Velma Ann Killam near Gaynor, Missouri. They remained true and devoted until her death on December 22, 1974. 

He and his wife were faithful members of the United Presbyterian Church.

He was the father of four children:  Phyllis Holman of Independence, Missouri, Darwin Lacy of Bedford, Iowa, Doris Jeffers of Hopkins, Missouri, and Florence [Florene] Potter of New Market, Iowa.  He had two sisters:  Faye Etta Cobb and Edna May Lacy, both deceased.

There are six grandchildren: Donna K. Holman Weakley, Bates City, Mo., Lyle Holman, Independence, Mo., Wanda Holman, Liberty, Mo., Tana Lacy Ross, Bedford, Iowa, Brenda Lacy Ton, Fresno, California, and Debra Potter, Maryville, Mo.

Also, there are five great grandchildren:  Andy and Danny Weakley, Carrie and Jamie Ross, and Loren Holman; also nieces and nephews.

John Lacy was a loving husband, father, and neighbor.  Though a man who never tried to escape hard work, he was a joy to know.  His days on earth were 82 years, 8 months, and 14 days, and they were lived to the fullest.  He will be sorely missed by his family and neighbors and his Christian brothers, but he leaves a rich heritage.

Bruce E. Mahan Rites Held Mon. In Iowa City

Services were held in St. Mary's Catholic church in Iowa City Monday for Dr. Bruce E. [llis] Mahan, 81, former Iowa legislator and University of Iowa dean.

Dr. Mahan, who died last Friday night in University Hospital, joined the U. of I. faculty in 1923 and served as dean of the extension division from 1929 until his retirement in 1961.  Widely known as an Iowa historian, he served two terms In the Iowa House of Representatives from 1962 through 1966. 

Dr. Mahan, born on a farm near Bedford, is survived by two sons.  His wife died in 1968.

Bruce Mahan Dies, Former Legislator

Bruce E. [llis] Mahan, 81, of 318 Koser Avenue, former state legislator and University of Iowa dean, died Friday night at University Hospital.

Funeral mass will be Monday at 9 a. m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church.  Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery at Cosgrove.  The rosary will be recited Sunday at 7:30 p. m., at the Donohue Mortuary, where friends may call after noon Sunday.

Mr. Mahan was born Nov. 25, 1890, on a farm near Bedford, Iowa, the son of Thomas S. and Luvira Titus Mahan.

He married Edna Rohret of Cosgrove, April 22, 1914.

He came to the UI faculty in 1923 and served as a lecturer in history until 1929, when he was appointed dean of the Extension Division.  He retired in January 1961.  He was secretary of the School of Religion for 27 years.

A legislative consultant for 40 years, Mr. Mahan was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1962.  He was re-elected in 1964.

Mr. Mahan was widely known as an author of Iowa history.

Dean Mahan was superintendent of schools at Cascade four years, assistant principal at Iowa City High School five years and associate editor of the Iowa Historical Society six years.  He was a longtime member of the board of control of athletics and the board of trustees of the School of Religion.

He received BA, MA and PhD degrees at UI.

Mr. Mahan was a member of St. Mary's parish, the Triangle Club, Rotary, the Knights of Columbus and numerous local, state and national educational and professional groups.

He is survived by two sons, Louis F. [rank] Mahan of Iowa City and Dr. Thomas P. [atrick] Mahan of Atlanta, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his wife in April 1968.

Joyce Elaine McCurdy

God did give and God did take away little Joyce Elaine McCurdy, daughter of Max and Chloris McCurdy.  She was born in Conway, Iowa, April 2nd, 1929 and departed this life May 1st, 1930, at the age of 1 year and 29 days.  Our beloved Father was in need of white lilies in heaven so he sent for Joyce.

 She leaves behind her father, mother, one brother, Galen; one sister, Rachael; four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Matheny of Conway, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McCurdy of Shenandoah, Iowa.  Three great grandparents, John C. Matheny of Platteville, Mrs. Anna Smith of Conway, and Mrs. Mary Swartz of Shenandoah, besides many other relatives.

Funeral services were held in the Conway Methodist Church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by James Wilkins, after which the little body was laid to rest in the Conway cemetery.

Eliza Hargin Stewart

Eliza [Ann] Hargin, daughter of Noble and Susan [Emerson] Hargin, was born in Ireland, Oct. 31, 1835, and came with her parents to Canada in 1839, where she grew to womanhood and where in 1860 she was united in marriage to Andrew Stewart.  To this union were born ten children, three of whom preceded her, two in infancy and Mrs. E. [lmer] C. [lay] Wells [Matilda Eliza] [in Jan., 1928.  In 1865, she moved with her husband to Illinois, a few years later coming to Taylor County, Iowa, enduring the privations and hardships of the pioneer days.  Mother Stewart departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Bird, on Monday, April 28, 1930, at 4:00 a. m. to join her loving companion, who preceded her Nov. 29th, 1904.  The deceased is survived by five daughters, Mrs. John Mason [Ruth Prudence] of Conway, Ia., Mrs. N. [oah] W. [ilson] Smalley [Susan Ann] of Bedford, Ia., Mrs. B. [enjamin] F.[ranklin] Miller [Agnes Jane] of Bedford, Ia., Mrs. J. [oseph] G. [ordon] OÕDougherty [Mary Estella] of Hopkins, Mo., and Mrs. Joe Bird [Edna] of Sheridan, Mo.; two sons, Sam Stewart of Crooked River, Sask., Canada, and Will Stewart of Grover, Colo., and two brothers, Noble Hargin of Clearfield, Ia., and John Hargin of Canada; 32 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.  Hers was a good long life, usefully spent for others, finding no sacrifice too great to make for her family, a good wife and a loving mother, fair with a philosophy which found good in everything, and everything good to live for, yet not afraid to die, for earlier in life she united with the Methodist church, living true to her faith.

Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock a. m. , Tuesday, April 29th at the Maple Grove Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. James Wilkins.  Interment was made in the New Hope cemetery.

Masonic Burial Services Used At Home and Grave

Funeral services for Noble Hargin, 81, who died Feb. 27, at his home near Conway, were held at the home Saturday, March 3, conducted by Rev. J. C. Turner of Clearfield.  Masonic services were used at both home and grave, led by Rev. R. V. Felt of Gravity.

Noble Hargin was born in Canada, Jan. 15, 1853.  His mother died when he was small, and when he was seventeen years old, he came with his father to Iowa, where he spent the rest of his life.

He was married April 15, 1872, to Jessie E. Esplin.  To them were born ten children, two of whom died when they were small, Samuel G. and Susan A. HarginMrs. Hargin died several years ago.

Obituary - O. R. Hargin

Oliver Russell Hargin, son of Jessie [Esplin] and Noble Hargin, was born Oct. 30, 1894 in Taylor County, Iowa, and died Monday, June 2 at the Veterans' Hospital in Des Moines, at the age of 46 years, 7 months and 29 days.

He was the youngest of ten children, two having died in infancy.  On Nov. 12, 1929 he was married to Miss Hazel Chaney of Clearfield.  To them were born four children:  Phyllis Ann, 10, Mary Alice, 5, Phillip, 4, and Marion, 11 weeks.  He was a devoted husband and father and although in poor health for the last few years, he was never too weary nor busy to give the family his attention.  Mr. Hargin served his country in the World War; however, most of this time was spent in the hospital.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters; also six brothers, Will, Bruce and Frank of Clearfield, John of Lenox, Ed of Conway, and Roy of Salem, Oregon; one sister, Mrs. Ed Cooper [Mary Jane] of Conway; twenty-two nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the home Friday morning June 6.  Rev. F. B. Harris of Conway officiated.  Burial was in the Conway cemetery.

Miss Daisy Dawson Dies At Skidmore

Miss Daisy E. [lizabeth] Dawson of Skidmore, Mo., died Wednesday, June 4, in Hopkins, where she had been ill for several months.  She was 64 years of age.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Skidmore Friday afternoon and burial was in the Graham, Mo. cemetery.  Miss Dawson was a sister of Mrs. T. [homas] A. [lva] Zachary [Julia] of Los Angeles, Calif., a former resident of Bedford and had visited here on many different occasions.

Ed Cooper, 69, Dies At Lenox

[Joseph] Edwin Cooper, 69, of Lenox, died Thursday, August 7, at the home of his daughter, Dorothy, Mrs. Melvin Wurster, in Mount Ayr.  He was a farmer for many years and lived four miles south of Lenox.  He and his wife had retired and lived in Lenox until her death a few months ago.

He was a veteran and member of Parkinson Post No. 250 of the American Legion.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Bender Funeral Home with Rev. John Lippincott officiating.  Burial in Conway cemetery.

Survivors are three sons, Donald of Minnesota, Daryl of Dunlap, Dale of Conway; one daughter, Mrs. Melvin Wurster of Mount Ayr; several grandchildren.

Siam

J. A. Stewart Dies

Was Long Time Resident of Taylor County

Joseph Alonzo Stewart, 83, died Saturday night, Feb. 1, at his farm home near Siam after a long illness.

Mr. Stewart was born in Des Moines County, Iowa, December 3, 1863.  He came to Taylor County 76 years ago and had resided in the Siam vicinity since.

He is survived by one son, Glen Stewart of Siam; two grandchildren, Glen Eldon Stewart of Siam and Mrs. Virginia Davison of Braddyville; and one great grandson, Bobby Davison.

The funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 4, at the Methodist Church in Siam with the Rev. Hugh Jackson of Sidney in charge.  Burial was in the Siam cemetery.

Obituary - J A Stewart

Joseph Alonzo Stewart was born in Des Moines County, near Burlington, Iowa December 3, 1862, and died at his home, February 1, 1947, aged 84 years.

He was the son of Angelina Syester and Joseph Stewart and was one of a large family of children all of whom have ended their earthly pilgrimage excepting one sister, Mrs. Jane Rankin of Lyons, Kansas, who is 99 years of age.

When he was about 8 years old his parents moved to Taylor county, Iowa, near Siam, where he grew to manhood.

On March 17, 1887 he was married to Jessie [Alice] Fry of the same community. Very shortly after their marriage they moved to the farm home, which they were privileged, to share together for 50 years.

Five children came into this home, two of them, William Tilson [Filson] and Charles Warren, dying in early childhood. Their only daughter, Mayme C. Friend died in June 1936 and just a few months after her death, the wife and mother passed away. On April 21, 1944, his son Clarence died.

Those who survive are the son Glen and wife; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lola Stewart; 2 grandchildren, Mrs. Virginia Davison, and Glen Eldon Stewart; and a great grandchild, Bobby Davison.

Years ago when the Methodist Church in Siam was in its beginning Mr. Stewart was one of its staunch supporters, and through out the years had always been among its loyal followers.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church, the pastor Rev Hugh Jackson officiating. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.

Obituary - George M. Jackson

George M. [ac] Jackson, son of Sylvester [H.] and Beulah [Lesan] Jackson, was born July 10, 1864 in Stark County, Illinois, and died January 26, 1947 at the home of his daughter in Sharpsburg, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 15 days.  At the age of 9 he moved with his parents to Ringgold County, Iowa, locating on a farm near Ellston.

On December 21, 1884, he was married to Lizzie Johnston, who preceded him in death January 12, 1931.  To them were born five children, Mrs. Mary A. Faurot of Sharpsburg, Mrs. Bernice E. Brown of Chicago, Horace, who died September 11, 1928, Paul of Ellston and Guy of Cedar Rapids.

Surviving with the children are two brothers, Frank and Walter of Ellston; 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren.  He united with the Methodist Church at High Point at an early age, later transferring to Ellston, where he retained his membership.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, January 27, at the Methodist church in Ellston, conducted by Rev. A. R. Weed.  Burial was in the Ellston cemetery.

Wm. J. Steele Dead

Wm. J. Steele, who had been confined to his home for the past two weeks, grew rapidly worse Monday night and despite the efforts of the physicians in charge, continued to sink rapidly, passing away at 5 o'clock Tuesday evening.

Wm. J. Steele was born at Janesville, Wis., Nov. 30, 1857, coming with his parents to Taylor County in 1861, where he has since resided.  In 1890 he was married to Miss Celia McKee, and from this union two children were born, Celia, who died in infancy, and Gwendolyn, who survives him.  In 1906 deceased was married to Mrs. Emma [Johnson] Templeton, who survives him, besides a brother, Charles W. Steele, and two sisters, Mrs. Rose Baker and Mrs. J. [ohn] J. Clark.  Funeral services were held at the home this afternoon, conducted by Rev. Wm. B. Thompson and Rev. J. A. Currie.  Interment was in the Bedford cemetery.

William J. Steele died at his home in this city at 5 o'clock Tuesday evening, after an illness of several weeks.  He was 54 years of age.  Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. B. Thompson and Rev. J. A. Currie

Mr. Steele was born in Janesville, Wis., November 30, 1857.  When he was 4 years of age he came with his parents to Taylor County, which has since been his place of residence.  He lived on the farm for a time, but many of his years have been spent in the city.  His first marriage was to Celia McKee and they were the parents of two children, Celia and Gwendolyn, the latter only surviving of this family.  September 12, 1906, Mr. Steele was united in marriage with Mrs. Emma [Johnson] Templeton, who survives.  He leaves one brother, Charles W. Steele and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Clark and Mrs. Rose Baker, all residents of Bedford.

Funeral Held Here Sunday Afternoon

Charles W. Steele, 62, died at his home in Bedford, Thursday, Dec. 12, after having been in ill health for a long time.  The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robert Boshen.  Burial was in the Bedford cemetery, the I. O. O. F. ceremony being given at the grave.

Charles W. Steele, son of Charles M. and Sarah [Noble] Steele, was born Dec. 12, 1873, in Taylor County, Iowa, on his father's farm near Bedford.  He was the youngest of six children, three of whom preceded him in death.

He was married to Nettie B. Brown in St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 4, 1913.  Surviving with the wife are two sisters, Mrs. Ella Clark and Mrs. Rose Baker of Bedford; three nieces, Mrs. Garland Crumb of Bedford, Mrs. Lynne Simmons of St. Louis, and Mrs. Helen Jackson of Maryville.

He became a member of the Presbyterian Church during the preaching of Billy Sunday, transferring his membership to the Church of Christ several years ago.  He had been a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge for many years.

He spent all of his life in and near Bedford, and was a successful businessman until ill health caused him to retire.  He was very patient during his long illness.  He was a faithful husband, good neighbor and kind friend, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Obituary

Barbara J. [ane] Wyckoff, whose maiden name was Laird, was born Nov. 24, 1840, in Athens, Ohio, and died at her home in Bedford, Iowa, Oct. 13, 1912.

On the 23rd of February 1862, she was united in marriage to John Wyckoff.  To this union five children were born, Mary Adelia, who died in infancy; Bertha Etta, who passed away in her ninth year; Louis E. [lmer], who lives in Bedford; John W. [esley], and Bert C. [lyde], who live in St. Joseph, Mo.  Her husband preceded her to the land beyond January 14, 1910.

For many years Mrs. Wyckoff was a member of the Methodist Church and was held by all in highest esteem.  She died as she had lived---with a confident faith in her Redeemer.

Her funeral was held at the Methodist church in Bedford Tuesday Oct. 15th, the sermon being preached by Rev. Wm B. Thompson.

Mrs. John Wyckoff

Mrs. John Wyckoff died at her home in this city Sunday evening, October 13, aged 72 years.  Funeral services were held Tuesday morning from the home, conducted by Rev. W. B. Thompson of the Methodist Episcopal church.  Interment was in the Bedford cemetery.

Barbara Jane Laird was born in Athens, Ohio, November 24, 1840.  February 23, 1861 she was united in marriage with John Wyckoff.  Five children were born to this union, two daughters and three sons.  The family came to Taylor County 37 years ago and Bedford has been their home during the greater part of this time.  The two daughters having died in infancy, the surviving relatives are J. [ohn] W.[esley] Wyckoff and B. [ert] C. [lyde] Wyckoff of this city.  Mrs. Wyckoff had been an invalid for several years and her death at this time was not unexpected.

W. C. Richardson Dies In N. Y. C.

William C. [haplan] Richardson suffered a fatal heart attack on Thurs. Jan. 14 in New York City.  Funeral services and interment were in New York City on Mon. Jan. 18.

Mr. Richardson was the only son of Mrs. Mary T. [hompson] Richardson of Bedford.  He was born July 18, 1910, in Elk City, Okla.  He was reared in Bedford, and was graduated from Bedford High School, the University of Iowa and received his law degree from Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas.  Since that time he has practiced law in New York.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, one son, Barrie, his mother, Mrs. Mary T. [hompson] Richardson, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Phil H. Holt of New Haven, Conn.

Graveside services for Ona [Marie] Stickelman of Des Moines were held at Fairview Cemetery here at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.  Services were held Wednesday morning at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines.  Miss Stickelman died Sunday, Jan. 17, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.  She is the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Stickelman of Des Moines and the late Guy Stickelman.
