Barbara Shehan

Funeral services for Barbara Shehan, age 53, of Lenox were held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001,11 a.m. at the Christian Church in Lenox with Pastors Dena Vittorio and Tim Maxa officiating.

Barbara Shehan was born July 29, 1948, in Creston, the daughter of Earle Duane Lillie and Bessie Alice Lewis Lillie. She passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001.

She grew up near Lenox on a farm west of town. She attended Lenox Community School and graduated in 1966. After graduation Barbara and her best friend Patty Brammer, moved to Des Moines, where she worked for Look Magazine as a punch card operator.

On May 20,1967, she was united in marriage to John Shehan at the Lenox Christian Church. The couple moved to the Philippines where John was stationed. In 1969 they moved to Glenwood for a short time, then returned to Lenox from 1969 to 1974. They lived in Albany, Mo., from 1974 to 1981 when they moved to Austin, Texas. The family returned to Lenox in 1986 and operated the Lenox Cafe until 1993.

Barbara had managed the golf course in Afton for several years and worked at Papetti's of Iowa until her health forced her to retire.

She was a member of the Lenox Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and Genealogy Society of Prescott. She loved candy and was well known for her delicious pies. She is survived by her husband John of Lenox; four children Stephanie Marckmann (husband Jim) of Lenox and their children Zach, Michael, Garret and A.J.; Derrick Shehan of Shenandoah and his daughter Essie; Quentin Shehan of Kansas City, Kansas; and Benito Gonzales (wife Grizelda  ) of Colorado and their daughter Barbara; a brother Michael Lillie (wife Pam) of Prescott; a sister Virginia Swank and Charlie Serber of Chillicothe, Mo.; and her best friend Eldena Freshour of Lenox.

Preceding Barbara in death were her parents Earle and Bessie; a son, Scott, at birth; and a sister, Susan Lillie  .

Janice Shehan Succumbed Friday

Janice Lee Shehan, two-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shehan of Bedford, died at St. Francis hospital, Maryville about three o'clock Friday afternoon May 18, where she had been taken a few hours earlier. The little girl had been ill with a heart condition since birth.

Funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Wilbur G. Travis of the Christian church. Burial in Fairview cemetery.

Surviving with the parents are a sister and two brothers, Patty, John and Stephen, all of the home, grandparents, Mrs. Ethel Croy, J. W. Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Newkirk.

DEATH TAKES SHEHAN INFANT

Susan Jane Shehan, daughter of Robert and Ethel [Newkirk] Shehan, was born Sept. 22, 1962 and left this earthly life Jan. 18, 1963, aged 3 months and 26 days, while in the Clarkson hospital, Omaha, Nebr.

She was born with a congenital heart condition, which required surgery, but she was not strong enough to recover following surgery.

She is survived by her father and mother, three brothers and two sisters. They are John, Steve, Patty, David and Joyce; two grandmothers, Mrs. Ethel Croy and Mrs. Flossie Newkirk, one grandfather, Roy Newkirk and numerous other relatives. She was preceded in death by a sister, Janice.

Obituary - Mrs. J. M. Shields

Amelia Walter, second daughter of Frederick and [Anna] Elizabeth [Schafroth] Walter, was born December 25, 1861 in Ohio, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Fine, in Siam, Iowa, on January 17, 1948, at the age of 86 years and 22 days.

With her parents she moved to Iowa by steamboat when she was six years of age. The family settled on a farm in Adams County near Nodaway, Iowa, where she spent her girlhood days. She received her schooling in the nearby Methodist Grove School. When a young woman, she united with the Christian Church at Brooks, Iowa. Later, she transferred her membership to the Christian Church at Siam, after moving to that community. She was a devoted Christian throughout her life, and a charter member of the Siam Willing Workers.

She was married to Joseph M. [ilton] Shields at her parent’s home in Adams County, on November 8, 1881. To them thirteen children were born, four of whom preceded her in death: Mary Matilda, Arnold Lee, Mrs. Anna [Marilla] Sinclair and Pearle Pauline. After sixty-one years of wedded life together, her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1943.

She leaves to mourn her departure seven sons and two daughters: Grover C.[leveland] of Hepburn, Clifford M. [ilton] of Clarinda, Mrs. Elsie Hulpiau of San Bernardino, California, Frank W. [alter], Joseph W. [elcome] and Mrs. Viva Fine all three of Siam, Dewey L.[ewis] of New Market, Darwin A. [ndrew] of Evanston, Wyoming, and Fred H. of Siam. Also three sisters: Mrs. Susan Moser of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Eva Brokaw of Lenox, and Mrs. Rosa Boylen of Sioux City; one brother, Charles Walter of Creston. Nineteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren survive her. Two grandsons, Max and Charles Shields, who are now [in] service overseas, made their home with Grandma and Grandpa Shields during their childhood days and were loved and cared tor by them as their own. “Grandma Shields” loved her family and friends deeply.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Christian church in Siam, conducted by Rev. Elba Martin of Hopkins. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.

Clifford Shields Rites Monday

Funeral services for Clifford Milton Shields, 78, of near College Springs, long time Taylor county resident, were held Monday, April 19, at Williams Memorial Chapel in Clarinda with Rev. Mason Williams officiating. Mr. Shields died at the Clarinda Rest Home where he had been a patient for the past three months. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery at College Springs with graveside military services by Sergy Post No. 98 of the American Legion.

Clifford Milton Shields was born at Brooks, Iowa on Nov. 22, 1887, the son of Joseph Milton and Amelia Walters [Walter] Shields. He had lived for many years in Mason Township in Taylor County where he was a farmer. While in Taylor County Mr. Shields was active in the AAA, had worked in the office at Bedford and was chairman for several years. The family moved to Clarinda where they lived from 1944 to 1950. In 1950 they moved to their present farm home.

He married Beulah Giltner June 14, 1922 at Oakland, Iowa.

Mr. Shields was a member of the Christian Church and while living in Taylor County was superintendent of the Sunday school and elder in the Siam Church. Upon moving to Clarinda their membership was transferred to the church there. Mr. Shields was a charter member and past commander of the New Market American Legion and was presently a member of Sergy Post No. 98 of Clarinda. He was an army veteran of World War I.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah; one daughter and her husband, Allen and Suan Marilyn Reed; two grandsons, Michael and Patric Reed, all of College Springs; one granddaughter, Mrs. Sally Bredensteiner; five brothers, Grover Shields of Clarinda, Frank Shields of Siam, Dewey Shields of New Market, Darwin Shields of Calif., and Fred Shields of Bedford; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Hulpiau of San Bernardino, Calif., and Mrs. Viva Fine of Siam.

Darwin Shields Rites in Calif.

Darwin [Andrew] Shields, 71, of Milpitas, Calif., died September 24. The funeral and interment were in California September 27.

He was born in Adams County and moved to Siam when he was a small child where he attended school.

November 21, 1923 he married Lora Maxwell and to this union two sons were born.

After the death of his wife he moved to Colorado where he married Alice Taylor who preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sons, Max in Calif., and Charles in Maitland, Fla.; a stepson, Bennie Taylor, in Alaska; four brothers, Grover, Clarinda, Dewey, New Market, Frank and Fred of Siam; two sisters, Mrs. Viva Fine, New Market and Mrs. Elsie Halpian in San Bernardino, Calif.

Dewey [Lewis] Shields, long-time resident of Siam, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1981, at Municipal Hospital, Clarinda, at the age of 82.

He was born in Adams County, the son of Joseph [Milton] and Amelia [Walter] Shields. He moved to Siam with his parents when he was seven years old. He attended school at Siam and worked for nearby farmers.

He was married to Coryl Nevin of New Market on March 1, 1922.

In later years, they moved to a farm near New Market, later retiring in New Market.

Ill health forced him to become a resident of the Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda in October of 1980.

His parents, seven brothers, five sisters preceded him in death. He leaves his wife Coryl of the home; one son, Dennis, Kansas City; one daughter, Doris Lea Van Horn and husband, Val, Forest Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and friends.

The funeral was Wednesday morning at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda.

Dewey [Lewis] Shields, long time resident of Siam died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1981 at the Clarinda Hospital at the age of 82 years of age.

He was born in Adams County the son of Joseph [Milton] and Amelia [Walter] Shields. He moved to Siam with his parents when he was seven years old. He attended school in Siam and worked for nearby farmers. He was married to Coryl Nevin of New Market on March 1, 1922. Little Donald Dewey Shields was born Monday November 2 and passed away Wednesday November 4, being permitted to stay only two days with the parents who adored him. J. M. Shields, Sr., died at his home near Siam, Iowa, Monday, October 5, at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 15 days.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Siam Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson of Bedford. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.

Joseph Milton Shields, son of Mary Walker and Andrew William Shields, was born October 20, 1855 in Adams County, Iowa. His early life was spent in Adams County, where he was married to Amelia Walter on November 8, 1881. To them were born thirteen children, four of whom preceded him in death: Mary Matilda, Arnold Lee, Mrs. Anna Sinclair and Pearle Pauline.

The family resided in Page County for a number of years and later moved to Taylor County 37 years ago, where they had since made their home.

When a young man, Mr. Shields united with the Christian church at Brooks, Iowa, and united with the Christian church at Siam after moving to that community.

During his long illness he was a patient sufferer, always cheerful and interested in those about him. He was of a quiet, unassuming nature, and was always happiest in his own home, where he kept well informed of the news through the radio and newspapers.

He is survived by his wife, who has been a faithful companion for more than sixty years; and by nine children: Grover C. [leveland] Shields of Hepburn, Clifford M. [ilton] Shields of Shambaugh, Mrs. Elsie Halpian of San Bernardino, Calif., Frank W. [alter] Shields of Bedford, Joseph W. [elcome] Shields of Braddyville, Mrs. Viva [Amelia] Fine of Bedford, Dewey L. [ewis] Shields of New Market, Darwin A. [ndrew] Shields of Omaha, and Fred H. Shields of Bedford. There is also an aged sister, Rhoda Ann Dow of Pleasant View, Colorado; 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Two grandsons, Max and Charles Shields, made their home with Grandpa Shields during their childhood and were loved by him as his own.

Joseph Shields Rites Held Wed.

Funeral services for Joseph Welcome Shields, 71, were held yesterday (April 29) at Denver, Colo. Mr. Shields died at his home in Denver, April 25. Burial was at the Ft. Logan cemetery near Denver.

Mr. Shields, the son of Joseph and Amelia Walter Shields, was born in Adams County, Nov. 13, 1893, spent his early years in Page and Taylor counties, and attended school in the Siam area. After being in Germany during WW I he farmed near Siam until 1925, moving to Denver, where he married Rebecca Rundell, formerly from Grinnell.

To this union two children were born: Helen Louise and Frank Clifford. They lived at Siam while their children were young, and returned to Denver where Mr. Shields worked at a veterans' hospital until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, a daughter Mrs. Lou (Helen Louise) Evans of Denver, a son Frank of Durango, Colo., seven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Hulpiau, of San Bernardino, Calif., and Mrs. R. [alph] D. Fine of Bedford; six brothers, Grover, of Clarinda; Clifford, Blanchard; Darwin, Reno, Nev.; Dewey, New Market; Frank and Fred, of Bedford.

Obituary—Pearl Shields

Pearl Shields died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. [oseph] M. [ilton] Shields, north of Siam, Friday, April 28, after an illness of three weeks. The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Siam Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. E. Robb, pastor of the Christian church at Bedford. Interment was made in the Siam cemetery.

Pearl Pauline Shields was born in Page County, February 5, 1903. At the age of three years she moved with her parents to their present home north of Siam. She had been a regular attendant at school and Sunday school and was a general favorite with her teachers and school mates at both places. She leaves to mourn her loss her parents, two sisters and seven brothers.

The funeral service of Mrs. Anna [Marilla] St. Clair [Sinclair], who died in Potlatch, Ida., a few days ago was held in the Christian church last Sunday conducted by Rev. Carter of Des Moines. Mrs. St. Clair [Sinclair] was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. [oseph] M. [ilton] Shields, who lives northwest of town, who have the sympathy of their friends and neighbors of this community in their sad bereavement.
