Mrs. Miller became a Christian in early girlhood, uniting with the Church of Christ at Siam. At the time of her death she was Superintendent of the Sunday school and president of the Willing workers society here. A tireless worker for the cause of right and the up building of the community. She graduated when young from the Western Normal College at Shenandoah and taught for two years in the schools of Taylor County with success. She will be greatly missed from the church and Sunday school where she was a regular attendant. A bright useful young life has passed away. She died on the 8th birthday of her baby boy Floyd. As the sun was rising her life went out and at the beautiful sunset of the same day she was laid to rest in the Siam cemetery. Short services were held at the open grave conducted by Rev. OBITUARY

Mrs. John Miller

Mattie Marie Miller, second child of Isaac Chester and Rebecca Hutchinson Hosman, was born Nov. 11, 1901 at Siam, Iowa, and died February 14, 1942 at Mesa, Arizona, at the age of 40 years, 3 months and 3 days. On July 15, 1936 at Maryville, Mo., she was married to John H. [uston] Miller, who survives her. They made their home on the farm southwest of Siam until failing health caused them to go to Holyoke, Colo., where they spent more than a year. On October 14, 1941, they went to Arizona, hoping a milder climate would be of benefit to them both.

She was a most untiring and devoted wife. No sacrifice was too great for her to make, if by so doing she could relieve or comfort her husband in his illness. She was a kind relative and a grand friend, always so willing and capable of helping others in illness or distress. She was of a quiet, unassuming nature, but so faithful to those whom she loved. Her kindness can never be forgotten by the members of her husband's family and her memory will be lovingly cherished for all her good deeds to those whom she ministered to so graciously.

She received her education in the Siam school, where she enjoyed the love and respect of a host of friends. She united with the Christian church at Siam in September 1915, and remained a faithful member through life. She was also a member of the Willing Workers society of the church.

Her father, Chester Hosman, and a small granddaughter, Norma Lee Miller preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, John Miller; one stepson, Eldon W. [eston] Miller and his wife Anna Miller, and one little granddaughter, Joyce Marie Miller of Siam; her mother, Mrs. Rebecca Hosman of Clarinda; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Hughes of Holyoke, Colo., and Miss Alice Hosman of Clarinda; one brother Carl Hosman and family of Holyoke, Colo. The funeral services were held Thursday morning at the Christian church in Siam, conducted by Rev. C. M. Eppard of Clarinda. Burial was in the Siam cemetery.
[Note:  Birth date engraved on her gravestone is 1902.   Iowa, Births and Christenings, 1830-1950 and Iowa County Births, 1880-1935, both give the birth date as November 11, 1901.)

She was one of a family of three children, consisting of two girls and one boy, all of whom have passed away with the exception of the brother, James Witt, of Elkcreek, Mo. who was unable to be at her funeral.

Zorelda Jane Witt was united in marriage to Martin Cole Owens, January 9, 1879, at Maryville, Mo. They moved from there to Taylor County, Iowa 23 years ago.

Those surviving to mourn her going is the husband and daughters, Mrs. Jessie Albright of Atlantic, Kansas; Mrs. Nora Fuller of Casper, Wyoming; and Mrs. Lola Morehouse, of Hopkins, Mo., and the sons Roy of Falls City, Nebraska; Ed, of Hopkins, Mo., and Neil of Braddyville, Iowa. All the surviving children were present at the funeral to pay the last tribute to their deceased mother, except one daughter, Mrs. Nora Fuller, of Casper, Wyo. who was unable to be here. Also she leaves to mourn her going, 26 grandchildren and many distant relatives and a host of lifetime friends Mrs. Owens united with the Centenial So. Methodist church in Nodaway County, Mo., in 1883, at the age of 23 years. From this early age she has continued a faithful and devout member of the church. She transferred her membership to the High Prairie Methodist church and had held her membership to the time of her departure.

Mrs. Owens having been converted at an early age in life has lived a life of Christian influence, which will be long remembered by all who knew her. She had been failing in health for a period of years, but through all her sufferings and afflictions she bore it bravely with the patience of one like unto Christ.

It was but a few weeks ago that on her bed of affliction she quoted these words of Paul, "For me to live it, Christ; for me to die is gain."

In her 49 years of married life she became so familiar with the scripture of the Word of God that she could turn to almost any portion of scripture she so desired.

In her constant walk with Christ, she developed her Christian graces and became a saint ready for the time of harvest and as the product was now matured and ready for heaven, Christ has saw fit to take her unto himself.

All her parting words was to the end "Meet me over there." Though unable to utter a word the last day of her stay on earth, yet at the time of her departure she was asked by her companion, "Do you know me" and her answer came, "Yes".

The children can but rise up and call her blessed and say; "Heaven's gain is our loss."
