SHARPSBURG

OBITUARY

Mrs. Abigail Mathews Richey, daughter of Paul and Sarah Mathews, was born near Wooster, Ohio, Sept. 22, 1850 and departed this life at her home in Sharpsburg, Iowa, Nov. 21, 1936 at the age of 86 years, one month and 29 days. She was the youngest and last of a family of ten children.

She was united in marriage, Feb. 4, 1869 to Isaac P. [arker] Richey, at Birmingham, Van Buren County, Iowa. To this union were born six children, two of whom died in infancy.

In the spring of 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Richey moved with their family to Taylor County, Iowa, and resided near Lenox, until they moved to Sharpsburg in the spring of 1895. Mr. Richey passed to his reward August 19, 1900.

In the home from which she took her departure, Mrs. Richey had lived for 37 years in the tender and faithful care of her son, Shannon Richey who together with her other children, had nursed her like an infant through all of her last affliction and suffering.  At 11:25 the night of Nov. 21, after calling her children to her bedside, she soon dropped into a quiet, restful sleep, to awaken in her heavenly home.

At the age of 17 Mrs. Richey united with the Summit Presbyterian Church, and had been a faithful member. She was a pillar and source of spiritual strength and encouragement to the church and community to the end of her useful and happy life.

She leaves to mourn her departure three sons, Ison Edward, Dallas Norman and Shannon De Forrest all of Sharpsburg; and one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Brown of Lenox; ten grand children and seventeen great grandchildren.

This whole community of friends and neighbors, who through the years have learned to love her dearly for her sterling Christian character, will greatly miss her happy good cheer, and mourn her departure.

No member of this community will ever be more missed by the [words missing] fidelity and constant, kindly service to all. Her children also rise up to call her blessed.

FRANK EDWARD STANGER

Funeral services for Frank Stanger, age 93, of Lenox, who died Saturday, March 15, 2003, were held Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lenox. Interment was held in the Grove Cemetery. Memorials can be given in Frank's name. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Frank Edward Stanger was born October 11,1909, in Taylor County, Iowa the son of Daniel Stanger and Katharina Haering Stanger. Frank is a life-long area resident who grew up attending school in Taylor County. On December 29, 1949, he was   united in marriage to Martha Cartwright in Des Moines, Iowa. To this loving union two daughters Carole and Diana were born.

Frank started his business of custom corn shelling in the spring of 1934 to earn extra money. Back in '34 and '36 there was not much money to be made; however, he did his best. His first sheller was a John Deere No. 5, which shelled about 250 to 300 bushels of corn an hour. Over the years, Frank had other larger shellers, including an International and various models of John Deere’s. Frank's shelling services reached as far south as Kansas City, Missouri for DeKalb Seed Company to forty miles northwest near Stanton; and as far east as Tingley. In 1975 when that final rock slipped through and ruined the inner workings of the sheller, Frank knew it was time to retire!

Frank was always a fantastic neighbor and friend to everyone. He was always helping those around him whenever possible. Frank's philosophy in life was 'to treat your neighbors right and they will treat you right in return.’

Frank was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lenox. Served as Treasurer for the Lenox Community School for over twenty-five years; was a fifty-year Mason, serving as Worshipful Master for the Tremont Lodge. He was a member of the Eastern Star, Salome Chapter in Lenox and now a member of Instruction Lodge #275 A.F. & A.M.  of Corning; a Rainbow Dad and proud owner of a Century Farm. Frank was one of the first chauffeurs for the girl's basketball team in the 1930's, prior to the school providing transportation to the games.

Preceding Frank in death are his parents, Daniel and Katharina; two brothers, Carl and Paul Stanger and four sisters, Amelia Clapper; Florence Brumbaugh; Alma Fleming and Matilda (Tilly) Ward.

Left to cherish Frank's memory are his loving wife Martha of Lenox; two daughters, Carole Stanger of Atlantic; and Diana Stanger-Smith and husband Keith of Maryville, Missouri; one granddaughter, Kylee Smith, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
