Passed Over the River

Died, at his home in Bedford, Wednesday, March 18, 1903, at l: 45 p.m., G. [arrett] C. [ornelius] [Garrett C.] Newkirk, aged 76 years, 10 months and 15 days.  The funeral services will be conducted at the home this afternoon at 1 o'clock by Elder Wm. Cobb.  Interment in Titus cemetery [Graceland].  Mr. Newkirk has been bedfast for a long time and his death has been daily expected.  His wife and relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their sad bereavement.

Mrs. Ira Thompson Succumbs Thursday

Mrs. Ira G. [raff] Thompson, 82, died at her home west of Bedford Thursday, Oct. 8.

The funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon conducted by Leslie R. Cobb.  Burial was in the Graceland cemetery.

Iowa Alice Warder was born in the state of Indiana on March 28, 1854.  When five years of age she moved with her parents to eastern Iowa.

March 6, 1873 she was married to Ira G. [raff] Thompson at Lancaster, Mo.

To this union eight children were born, five sons and three daughters.  They are Mrs. Effie Taylor of Lenox, Elmer, Lester, Troy, Arthur, Walter and Mrs. Flossie Newkirk of Bedford, and Mrs. Bertha Ratliff of Kingsport, Tenn.  All of the children were present with their mother during her last illness.

Also left to mourn her passing are twenty-four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

In the year 1883 they moved to Taylor County, Iowa.  She lived in the state the remainder of her life with the exception of seven years spent in Missouri.

On March 6, 1923, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.  Mr. Thompson died April 26, 1925.

Mrs. Thompson united with the Church of Christ in the year 1889 at Blue Grove near Sharpsburg, Iowa.

Mrs. Ira G. Thompson

Iowa Alice Warder was born in the state of Indiana on March 28, 1854 and died at her home near Bedford, Iowa, October 8, 1936 at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 10 days.

When 5 years of age, she with her parents, moved to eastern Iowa.  On March 7, 1873 she was united in marriage to Ira G. [raff] Thompson at Lancaster, Mo., who preceded her in death April 26, 1925.

A. A. Newkirk, 80

Dies Here Monday

A. A. Newkirk, 80, a resident of Bedford and community for many years, died at his home in west Bedford, Monday, Jan. 18.

The funeral services were held at the Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Max Buck.  Burial was in the Bedford cemetery.

Albert A. [lmarion] Newkirk, son of Garrett and Jane Newkirk, was born Sept. 2, 1856, in Grant County, Wisconsin, and passed away at his home in Bedford, Iowa, Jan. 18, 1937, at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 16 days.

He came to Iowa with his parents when he was a small child and had resided in Taylor County since, with the exception of 13 years spent in South Dakota.

July 30, 1879, he was married to Miss Amanda Bristow.  To them were born five children, four of whom, with their mother, survive.  They are Clyde Newkirk of Palouse, Wash., Roy Newkirk of Bedford, Carl Newkirk of Conway, and Mrs. Ernest Thompson [Ruby Adell] of Gravity.  There are also one brother, Lee Newkirk of Enid, Okla., fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, one brother, and an infant child.

At the age of twenty-three he united with the Christian church and throughout his life lived close to the church, serving faithfully as a deacon for many years and as an elder in the church until his death.

Mr. Newkirk had been in failing health for some time and passed away after a brief illness.

Miss Ella Hoover's Sister Dies in East

Mrs. Ophie [Ophelia] Fiester, a former resident of Bedford, died at her home in Washington, D.C., Friday, April 30, after having been in ill health for some time.  The funeral services were held in Washington, D.C. Sunday afternoon and burial was made in Pennsylvania [Hornbrook Cemetery, Sheshequin Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania].

Miss Ella Hoover of Bedford, a sister of Mrs. Fiester, went to Omaha Saturday night where she took a plane early Sunday morning for Washington to attend the funeral services.  The flying time from Omaha to Washington is seven hours, Miss Hoover arriving at her destination shortly after 10a.m.  She was accompanied to Omaha by Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Henry [Irene Weir] and Mrs. R. [obert] L. [etcher] Henry [Alice Marie Webb].

Attends Funeral

Miss Ella Hoover received word Saturday of the death of her sister, Mrs. Ophie [Ophelia] Fiester, in Washington, D.C.  Hubert Henry, nephew of Miss Hoover, took her to Omaha where she boarded an airplane and arrived in Washington in time to attend her sister's funeral Sunday afternoon.  Mrs. Fiester formerly lived in Bedford [Jackson Township].

Funeral Is Today For Mrs. Fiester

Funeral services for Mrs. Ophelia Hoover Fiester, 79, widow of Prof. S. [imon] F. [orrester] Fiester, writer and poet, will be held this afternoon at the Deal undertaking establishment, with the Rev. F. Bland Tucker, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, officiating.

Mrs. Fiester died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. [dward] Clayton Fish [Lula], 1753 Hobart Street.

Born in Bedford, Ia., Mrs. Fiester had lived here over 40 years.  Her husband formerly was employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Fish [Lula May] and Mrs. J. [ohn] Lee Wilkinson [Irene Ruth], six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Hold Last Rites For Mrs. Fiester

Funeral services for Mrs. Ophelia Fiester, 79, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. [dward] Clayton Fish [Lula] in Washington, D. C., Friday, April 30, were held in Washington, D. C. Sunday afternoon, May 2, conducted by Rev. Dr. F. Bland Tucker, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Georgetown.  Burial was made the following day at Towanda, Penn.

Ophelia Hoover, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Balsar Hoover [Mary Ann Henkle], was born at Bedford, Iowa, Jan 14, 1858.

She was married to Prof. S. [imon] F. [orrester] Fiester in 1882.  Her husband, who died in 1929, was for many years an expert accountant of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  He had written a number of poems and also was known for other writings.

Mrs. Fiester is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fish [Lula], at whose home she died, and Mrs. J. [ohn] Lee Wilkinson [Irene Ruth]; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, all of Washington, D. C.  Also by two sisters and two brothers, Miss Ella Hoover of Bedford, Mrs. Zelda Hoover Streeter of Lompoc, Calif., Oswald Hoover of Modesto, Calif., and Don Hoover of Quincy, Ill.

ATHENS, May 1 – Mrs. Ophie H. Fiester, widow of S. F. Fiester of Sheshequin, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. C. Fish in Washington, D. C., last evening at 7:30. The body will be brought to the C. H. Maryott funeral home, Towanda, where prayer service will be held at 10 a. m. Monday. Burial will be in Hornbrook cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fish, Mrs. J. Lee Wilkinson of Washington, D. C. and a brother, Oswald Hoover of Lompoc, California.

Ralph Thompson Dies at His Sisters Home

Ralph A. Thompson, a resident of Bedford practically his entire life, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Anna Coe at Ackley, Iowa, Tuesday, July 13, at the age of 65 years, 10 months and 18 days.  Early in November of last year he suffered a third stroke at the home of his sister and was confined to his bed eight months before his passing.

The body was brought to Bedford and funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Friday afternoon, conducted by his brother-in-law, Rev. Mr. [Albert] Coe of Ackley, assisted by Rev. W. F. Overhulser of Bedford.  Burial was in the Graceland cemetery.

Ralph A. Thompson, son of Fannie and Orson Thompson, was born on a farm near Bedford, August 25, 1871.  He was married to Miss Della Eighmy, Dec. 1, 1915.  She passed away in December 1927.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Wood of Alhambra, Calif., and Mrs. Anna Coe of Ackley.

He was a member of the Methodist church at Bedford.
