Des Moines Rites For Kinsey John

Funeral services for William Kinsey John, 80, of Des Moines, were held November 16, at the Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines.  Mr. John died November 13, 1970, at his home after a few weeks illness.  Interment was at the Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Kinsey John, son of Amos Jackson John and Francis Elizabeth Coy John, was born January 26, 1890, at Bedford.

He grew to adulthood in Taylor County.  On December 25, 1913, he was united in marriage to Esther Van Camp and to this union were born three sons, Kenneth of Conway, Howard of Des Moines and Ivan of Ankeny, Iowa.

They made their home in Taylor County and Rippey, Iowa, until they moved to a farm near Waukee, from which they retired 11 years ago to their present home in Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and sisters and one great grandchild.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; three sons and their wives; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence, of Bedford; a sister, Lola Gilliland of Gallatin, Mo.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Kinsey John was a member of the West Madison Church of Christ, and faithful in service for the Lord to the time of his illness.

His love for his flowers and garden was an inspiration to all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Lillie Wood Rites in Ottumwa

Funeral services for Mrs. Leslie (Lillie Bristow) Wood of Ottumwa, formerly of Bedford, were held in Ottumwa November 18.  Mrs. Wood died November 15 in an Ottumwa hospital.

She is survived by a son and daughter and their families.

Funeral services Mrs. Leslie (Lillie) Wood, 85, of Ottumwa, formerly a Bedford resident, were held November 18 at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, conducted by the Rev. Charles E. Smith, Jr.  Mrs. Wood died November 15 at Ottumwa Hospital.  Interment was at Ottumwa Cemetery.

The daughter of Frank and Sarah Beecham Bristow, she was born Sept. 21, 1885, at Hopkins, Mo.

A resident of Ottumwa since 1914, she was a member of First Baptist Church and the Milwaukee Woman's Club.

Her marriage to Leslie B. Wood was April 6, 1904, at Bedford.  He died Jan. 11, 1966.

Survivors are one son, Jerry Wood of Ottumwa; one daughter, Mrs. Carl Allen [Gladys] of Fort Dodge; three grandchildren, Mrs. Joan Schooley of Ottumwa, Mrs. Janet Taylor of Minneapolis and David Allen of Iowa City; and three great grandsons and one brother, Clyde Bristow of Ottumwa.

Mrs. Leslie B. Wood – Mrs. Lillie Wood, 85, formerly of 1904 N. Elm, died at 8:25 p. m. Sunday at Ottumwa Hospital.
The daughter of Frank and Sarah Beecham [Beauchamp] Bristow, she was born Sept. 21, 1885 at Pickering, Mo.
A resident of Ottumwa since 1914, she was a member of First Baptist Church and the Milwaukee Woman's Club.

Funeral services for Clifford J. [orie] Henderson, 74, of Siam, were held November 18 at the Siam Christian Church, with Loren Daly and Clarence Potter officiating.  Mr. Henderson died November 15 in Omaha where he had made his home recently.  Interment was at the Siam Cemetery.

Clifford J. Henderson, son of Abraham and Mary [Alice] Philpot Henderson, was born at Siam.

His parents, two brothers, Jesse and Clarence, an infant sister and a daughter, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, the former Hazel Comstock; two sons, Billy and Clifford Jr., of Calif.; five daughters, Elma Maxine of New Market, Rosalyn and Radene of Omaha, Marjorie of California and Opal in Iowa.

Joseph Stewart Rites In Siam

Funeral services for Joseph Albert Stewart, 93, of Siam, were held November 14 at the Siam Church of Christ, conducted by Loren Daly.  Mr. Stewart died at his home on November 11, 1970.  Interment was at the Siam Cemetery.

Joseph Albert Stewart, son of David McCune and Katherine Elizabeth Bashor Stewart, was born on a farm near Siam, Iowa, December 20, 1876.  He spent all his life in the Siam community.

He was united in marriage to Hattie Jane Gant on November 28, 1901 and to this union were born seven children.

Those who survive are his wife Hattie, of the home, Mrs. Doyle Cooper (Anna) of New Market; Mrs. Almira Renfro of Tucson, Ariz.; Mrs. John Maudlin (Bessie) of New Market, and Eldon of Hopkins, Mo.; two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Violet Stewart, Hopkins, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ella Perkins, Hopkins, Mo., and Mrs. Emza Melvin of Ore.; two brothers, Lee and Delton of Bedford.

He was baptized in August 1911.  Those who preceded him in death were two sons, Samuel McCune and Leroy; one daughter, Leafa Bernice; one granddaughter, Mrs. Evelyn Roush; his parents; three brothers, Frank, Will and Jake; three sisters, Annabelle Manley, Josephine Fox and Dessie Stewart.

He was a faithful follower of the teachings of Christ and his life was a living testimony of his faith.  A remark he often made to his family was that he hoped he could remain faithful to the end.[Theodore Kemple]

Theodore Kemple

Word was received here Tuesday of the death of Theodore Kemple, which occurred at Breckenridge, Okla., Tuesday morning at 7:00 o'clock.  Mr. Kemple was about 71 years of age and had been in failing health for the past few months.  He had been making his home with his sister, Mrs. Effie Oakley at Breckenridge, a suburb of Enid.  Mrs. Bruce Kemple and son Donald and brother, Orval Douglas, departed Wednesday morning overland, to attend the funeral.  Mr. Kemple was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

James W. McCoun

J. [ames] W. [illiam] McCoun died very suddenly at his home in Mapleton, Iowa, Saturday afternoon, Sept. 15.  The body was brought to Bedford on the afternoon train Monday and taken to the Stithem Funeral Parlors.  Tuesday afternoon the body was taken to the home of his son, Archie, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. C. Harris.  Interment was made in the Bedford cemetery.

James W. [illiam] McCoun, son of L. [eonard] T. and Sarah [Mahan] McCoun, was born in Bedford, Iowa, Dec. 1, 1860, and departed this life at Mapleton, Ia., September 15, 1928, aged 67 years, 9 months and 14 days.  He had been in poor health for a number of years yet was not confined to his bed, and the end came suddenly.  He was married April 7th, 1878, to Alma Melissa Bates.  To them twelve children were born.  Three died in infancy.  Those living are Mrs. E. B. ["Bunt"] Chaney [Ida] of Atchison, Kans.; Charles and John of Marshalltown, Ia.; Roy of Waterloo, Ia.; Mrs. H. [oward] W. Keith [Nellie] of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; Harry of Mapleton, Iowa; A. [rchibald] B. [eryl] of Bedford; and Elmer of Omaha, Neb.  Mrs. McCoun died June 26, 1895.  Mr. McCoun was an affectionate father and good provider, and kept the family together after the mother's death.  He was again married May 5, 1897, to Nellie Maud Bonar.  One child was born to this union, James Wm., Junior, who resides in Des Moines, Iowa.

Beside the children mentioned and his wife, Mr. McCoun is survived by his aged father of Bedford, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Connett, of Ottumwa. There are also thirteen grandchildren.  He had lived the greater part of his life in this locality, having engaged in business here until a few years ago, and will be kindly remembered by many friends.

Mrs. Maude Dorr Rites Here Saturday

Mrs. Maude Dorr, a resident of Taylor County most of her life, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 24, at the home of her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Bailie, in Bedford.

Funeral services were held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Service on Madison, Saturday afternoon, March 26.   Clarence M. Potter of New Market officiated.  Interment was in Forest Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Dorr fell on ice on January 9 and suffered a broken hip.  She was a patient in Municipal hospital at Clarinda for several weeks and was then brought to the home of her son and wife in Bedford.

Maude [Cornelia] Weir, daughter of John Thomas and Sarah [Elizabeth Meloy] Weir, was born in Clark County, near Martinsville, Ill., on February 26, 1885, and died at the age of 75 years, one month, eight days.

She was united in marriage to Lewis L. [eroy] Bailie on December 19, 1906.  To this union, two sons were born: William of Bedford, and Eugene of New Market.

Her husband, Lewis L. [eroy] Bailie, preceded her in death.  Later, she married John Dorr, who also preceded her in death.  One brother, Samuel Weir, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Dorr is survived by her son William and daughter-in-law, Anna Belle [Nelson]; her son, Eugene, and daughter-in-law, Lenore [Dunbar]; five grandchildren:  Richard, Marilyn, Judith and Janet, children of Eugene; and Steve, son of William; one sister, Mrs. Leona Smalley of Gravity; one brother, Clarence M. [orton] Weir of Cedar Falls; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Sam Weir [Olive Mary Martin] of Bedford.

She was a member of the New Market Church of Christ.

Dies After One Week's Illness
J. Foster Coles Much Respected Citizen, Answers Last Call; Leaves Wife
Jeremiah Foster Coles, a resident of Santa Cruz and Twin Lakes during the past ten years, passed away last evening at his home, 186 Mission St., after an illness of one week, although he was stricken with pneumonia in January and had never fully recovered from the effects.
The deceased was fifty-four years of age and a native of Haddonfield, New Jersey. Before coming to California, he followed farming. Surviving him is a wife to whom a full measure of sympathy will be extended in her bereavement. With her husband, Mrs. Coles formed many friendships in Santa Cruz and his death takes from the city one of its best citizens.
The funeral will be held from Wessendorf and Staffler's undertaking parlors tomorrow afternoon. The body will be shipped Monday to Cypress Lawn cemetery for cremation.

Mrs. Coles Named Sole Beneficiary
The petition of Mary H. Coles to be named executor of the last will and testament of her late husband, J. Foster Coles, was filed by Attorneys Netherton and Johnston yesterday in the superior court. The will, in which Mrs. Coles is the sole beneficiary, was also filed yesterday. The estate amounts to a little more than $16,000, made up as follows: 40 acres near Arana Gulch under contract to sell, $3300; cash in banks, $2309.51; promissory notes, $4700.

Death of C. Hoover

Charles S. [umner] Hoover of Santa Cruz died last Thursday at Roosevelt Hospital, Berkeley.   Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church, Soquel, at 2 o'clock Sunday.  Rev. Chas. Fish of Santa Cruz and Rev. F. L. Lee of Soquel will officiate.

Mr. Hoover was a painter by trade and had many friends here at Soquel.  His wife  [Sigismunda], who was a daughter of B. [lackwell] M. Smith, the well-known real estate agent of Soquel, died about a year ago.  Mr. Hoover was a member of the Free Methodist Church.

Funeral of Late Charles S. Hoover To Be Held Sunday
The body of the late Charles Sumner Hoover arrived in Santa Cruz yesterday and was received by Wessendorf and Staffler. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. Charles Fish of this city and Rev. F. L. Lee of Soquel officiating.
The deceased passed away at the Roosevelt hospital in Berkeley last Thursday as the result of an attack of typhoid fever. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. C. [Jeremiah] F. [oster] Coles of this city. He was forty-four years of age and a native of Iowa. For a number of years recently he lived in Santa Cruz.

C. D. Hoover, Retired Local Rancher, Dies

Clinton D. [ewitt] Hoover, 86, one-time rancher, died in a local hospital late last evening.  The family home was at 460 LaFonda Avenue.

Hoover was born in Iowa, and came to California at the age of nine years.  The family settled first in Santa Barbara, where he and a brother [Edward Benjamin] operated a business college until about 20 years ago.

However, Hoover moved to Santa Cruz in 1902 and lived on a ranch on Laurel Glen road.  His prize-winning mountain fruit was exhibited at local and state fairs.  Later, he moved into Santa Cruz.  He was a member of the Grace Methodist church.

Survivors are his widow, Rose N. [orma Smith], of Santa Cruz, a daughter, Dorothee Wilhelm, Santa Cruz; a son, Lieutenant Colonel Donald D. [ewitt] Hoover of the U. S. Air Force; a sister, Leonora Hoover, Santa Cruz, and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p. m. Saturday at the Grace Methodist Church.  Rev. L. W. Reneau will officiate and interment will be in the Soquel IOOF cemetery.  White's mortuary is in charge of services.

Rose N. Hoover, Active In Farm, Church Work, Dies

Rose N.  [orma Smith] Hoover, 72, a 67-year resident of Santa Cruz, who was active in church and farm bureau work, died this morning in a San Francisco hospital.

Funeral services will be held at the Irvin M. Smith and Son Funeral Chapel Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Elmer H. Podoll officiating.   Interment will follow in the IOOF cemetery.  

She is survived by her daughter, Dorothee L. Wilhelm, of Santa Cruz; a son, Lt. Col. Donald D. [ewitt] Hoover, of Lancaster, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Leonora Hoover, of Santa Cruz, and Mildred Smith, of Alpine, Calif.; five grandchildren.

Mrs. Hoover lived for many years on a fruit ranch on Laurel Glen road with her late husband, Clinton D. [ewitt] Hoover.  He died in 1952 at the age of 86.

She was active in the primary classes of both the Soquel and Grace Methodist churches, and was also active in farm bureau work.  She exhibited her canned fruits, jellies, at state fairs and helped her husband with his prize-winning fruit displays at fairs.

In the 1920's she was chosen to represent California, Oregon, and Washington at the national convention of Rural Home Improvement representatives.

Her son is assistant deputy chief of staff for personnel at the air force flight-testing center at Edwards Air Force Base, while her daughter is a teacher at Gault School.

J. Huntington Dies At 74

James M. Huntington, 74, died at his home at 607 North Mulberry Street at 11:15 a. m. Saturday [August 30].  He had lived in Union County all of his life and had been a farmer and a carpenter.

The funeral will be held at the Immaculate Conception worship center of the Holy Spirit Catholic parish at 9:30 a. m. Wednesday.  Rev. Fr. Arthur McCann, the pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.  A Rosary service was held at 3:30 p.m. today by the Holy Spirit Altar Society, and a parish Rosary will be held at 7:30 p. m. tonight at the Keating-Lindsay funeral home.

A memorial fund has been established for the Holy Spirit parish.

James M. Huntington was born at Creston, July 15, 1901.  He was the son of Walter R. [ussell] and Veta Fleming Huntington.  He was married at Creston, Sept. 7, 1935, to Pauline Wessels, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a son, Charles Huntington of Windsor, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Delbert (Mary) Chubick of Creston; six grandchildren and one great grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Ed (Mira) Collier of Ottumwa.  He was preceded in death by two infant daughters and by a brother.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception worship center of the Holy Spirit parish.

The funeral for James M. Huntington, 74, was held at 9:30 a.m. today [September 3rd] at the Immaculate Conception worship center of the Holy Spirit Catholic parish here.  Rev. Fr. Arthur McCann, the pastor, officiated.  Casket bearers were Melvin Woosley, Steve Bratzel, Tom Mullin, John Lynn, Gene McCann and Lowell Willets.  Burial was in Graceland cemetery.

Senora Foland Freemyer

Senora Foland was born May 7, 1845, in Bath County, Kentucky, and departed this life April 17th, 1928, at the home of her daughter, Clara Hennegin, near Conway, Ia., at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 10 days.  With her parents she came to Platte County, Missouri, in 1852.  They resided there two years, and then moved to Worth County, Mo., near Oxford.  She resided there until womanhood.  She was united in marriage to Joshua R. Freemyer, May 15, 1865.  To this union was born ten children, seven girls and three boys, as follows:  Mary H. Sweet of Delphos, Ia.; Martha R. Morris of Ellendale, Minn., John E. Freemyer, of Bedford, Ia.; Archer M. Freemyer of Los Angeles, Calif.; Lizzie S. Elliott, and Ada B. Thompson of Clarinda, Ia.; Alice M. Severns of Louisburg, Mo.; Clara M. Hennegin of Conway, Ia.; Anna G. Vanskyock of Blockton, Ia.; and Charles W., who died in infancy.  They moved to Taylor County in 1869.  She has resided here ever since.  She leaves to mourn her departure, besides her nine children, one brother, William Foland, of Parnell, Mo.; 46 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.  She united with the Christian Church of Isadora, Mo., in 1886.  She removed her membership to the Baptist Church of Athelstan, Ia., in 1904, where she has remained a faithful member ever since.  Her husband preceded her April 3, 1903.  She was a true companion, kind and loving mother, good neighbor and a loyal friend.

The funeral services were conducted in the Athelstan Baptist church April 19, 1928, by Challie E. Graham, assisted by Charles A. Jones and Mac Lamar, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Isadora cemetery.  Many friends extend their heart-felt sympathy to the bereaved ones, and wish for them the richest blessings of the kind Heavenly Father.

Mrs. Minnie Zeluf Rites Wednesday

Mrs. Minnie Zeluf, 73, died at a nursing home in Bedford Sunday afternoon, March 6.  Funeral services were held at the Shum Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Rolf M. Peters.  Burial in Bedford cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters and three sons.  Mr. [Benjamin Franklin] Zeluf died in 1943.

Obituary - Mrs. Minnie Zeluf

Mrs. Minnie Zeluf of Bedford died March 6, 1955, at the age of 73 years, 10 months, 29 days.  She was the daughter of Samuel and Anna Robertson, and was born April 7, 1881 at Franklin, Nebr.

She was married to [Benjamin] Franklin Zeluf on Dec 25, 1897.  To them seven children were born.  Her husband preceded her in death in 1943.  A daughter, Audrey Wray, died in 1939.

She is survived by six children, three sons and three daughters.   They are: Forest Zeluf of Omaha, Mrs. Esther Beltz of Baghdad, Arizona; Paul Zeluf and Mrs. May Martin of Elma, Wash.; Ralph Zeluf of Omaha, Mrs. Lena Yarrington of Chicago.

She leaves 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted from the Shum Funeral Home in Bedford, Wednesday, March 9, 1955 at l: 30 o'clock by Rev. Robt. M. Peters of the Bedford Methodist church.  Burial in Bedford cemetery.
