[BRIGGS, DAVID LEE] He was born Nov. 4, 1903, near Guss, Ia., the son of H. [enry] F. [rancis] and Pearl Fidler Briggs. On Feb. 25, 1925 he was married to Lucille Heuer who preceded him in death May 18, 1973. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one grandson, two brothers and one stepsister. Mr. Briggs is survived by two sons, Edwin of New Market and Virgil of Clarinda; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brothers: Hobert Briggs of Gravity and Lowell Briggs of Storm Lake, Ia.; Mrs. Maybelle Briggs of Rock Port, Mo., step-mother; half brothers: Ralph Briggs of Clearfield, Ia.; Floyd Briggs, Manchester, Kans.; and Frank Briggs, Farragut, Ia.; Mary Murray of Madrid, Ia., half-sister.
[CHRISMAN, MABEL ALBERTA COWAN] Mrs Chrisman was found by her husband Friday morning when he returned to the house after completing the morning chores. She had been in poor health for some time. Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Mrs. Thelbert Kendrick, three grandsons, her mother in Omaha and several sisters. Funeral services were at the Sutphen Funeral Home in Villisca with burial in the Guss cemetery.
[CHRISMAN, MABEL ALBERTA COWAN] Mabel Alberta Cowan, daughter of Forrest and Eva Cowan, was born in Blanchard, Iowa, April 7, 1909 and passed away at the age of 51 years, eight months, two days. She grew up in the Northboro vicinity. On Oct. 26, 1928, she was united in marriage to Oliver Chrisman. In 1932 Mr. and Mrs. Chrisman moved to the Guss community, where they had since lived. Surviving with her husband, are the daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thelbert Kendrick; and three grandsons, Jackie, Dennis and Randall Kendrick, all of New Market; her mother, Mrs. Eva Gillespie of Omaha; four sisters, Mrs. Michael Bockman of Omaha, Mrs. Mike Hickman, Gooding, Idaho, Mrs. Faye Jones of Rapid City S. Dak., Mrs. Robert Maust of Lansing, Iowa; two brothers, Bill Cowan, Lake Manawa, Bob Cowan, Red Oak.
[COMBS, LAURA MAE THOMPSON] Mrs. Combs died Sunday evening at Bethesda Care Center where she had been a resident for the past seven years. She was born Oct. 5, 1885, in Taylor County, the daughter of Scott and Anna Strain Thompson. She was married to Ned Combs who preceded her in death in 1970. They lived north of New Market until retirement when they moved to Clarinda. Mrs. Combs is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Eva Journey of New Market and Mrs. Glen (Dorothy) Neely of Sebring, Fl. There are four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery at Guss.

[DUNN, MARGARET MAY "MAGGIE" RUSSELL MCFARLING] Mrs. Mabel Dunn accompanied Mrs. Carolyn Harris in the following vocal selections, "Going Down the Valley," and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Casket bearers included Ted McCoy, Wesley Walters, Evan Andrew, Dale Stroud, Ray Stamps and Gilbert Branan. Maggie May Russell, daughter of Napoleon and Anna Russell, was born near West Columbia, Mason County, West Virginia, on May 24, 1872, and passed away at the Villisca Nursing Home, Villisca, Iowa, on August 5, 1964, at the age of 92 years. When she was six years of age she moved with her parents to Jones County, Iowa in a covered wagon. Twelve years later they moved to Taylor County where she lived for forty years. In 1901, she was united in marriage to John W. McFarling. To this union one daughter, Hazel was born. Mr. McFarling passed away on August 16, 1933, at their farm home southeast of Nodaway. On June 29, 1939, she was married to Holly F. Dunn, who died on January 29, 1949. For a number of years she lived southeast of Villisca and for more than five years she had been a patient at the Villisca Nursing Home. She was converted when sixteen years of age at services in the Pleasant Valley school in Jones County and had always professed the Methodist faith. Mrs. Dunn was preceded in death by her daughter Hazel Florence Dickover, who died two years ago. She is survived by one stepson, Orville Dunn of Langsdale, Pa.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Irene McClelland, o£ Villisca; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
[FLEENER, ELLEN ABIGAIL JOHNSON] Pallbearers were Ron Walters, Paul Mitchell, Carroll Stamps, Dave Walters, Wilson Wilhelm and Larry Stamps. Anabelle White was organist and Ramon Dick, soloist. Ellen Abagail Fleener was born Apr. 18, 1898, near Corning, IA, the daughter of Nickalas and Mary Rogers Johnson. She died July 17, 1997, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center, where she had been a resident since April 1990. She was married to Orvey Fleener in 1919. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson; and two sisters, the three of them were known as the Johnson sisters. She is survived by daughter Mrs Ruth Beebee and husband Alvin of Houston, TX; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
[FLEENER, ORVEY] Pallbearers were Henry Schrader, Ralph Andrew, Ralph Pratt, Ivan Wells, Myron Reynolds, and Vern Melvin. Flower bearers were Gladys Schrader and Arlene Orme. Organist was Mrs Francis Gray who accompanied Mrs Carolyn Harris who presented the selections "In The Sweet By and By" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Concluding services were held at the Guss Cemetery. Sutphen Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements and New Market American Legion was in charge of the military services. OBITUARY - Orvey Fleener, son of Elizabeth and Alpha Fleener, was born October 19, 1894, in New Market, Iowa and departed from tills life August 11, 1968 at his home in Guss. He would have been 74 in October. Orvey spent his early life in Missouri and later life In Iowa as a farmer in Page and Taylor counties. On July 31, 1919 he was united in marriage to Ellen Johnson at Corning. To this union one daughter was born. Mr Fleener served his country in the US Army during World War I in France, taking part in the battles of the Argonne Forest and St Mihiel. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Ellen; one daughter, Mrs Alvin (Ruth) Beebe and husband of Mill Valley, California 3 grandchildren, Timothy, Sherry and Candi Beebe; one sister, Mrs John (Viola) Pinchot and husband of Riverbank, California; one brother, William Fleener of Milo, Mo; several nephews and nieces and a host of friends. Orvey was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs Essie Lester and one brother, Jesse Fleener. He belonged to World War I Veterans, the American Legion and the Farm Bureau. He loved the world of nature and enjoyed the hobby of fishing. A good husband, father and neighbor, he was always ready to help anyone in need. He will be greatly missed not only by his loved ones but by his many friends.
[ [HANSON, DALE EDWARD] Dale was drafted into the United States Army in January 1945 serving in the Philippines and was an MP as part of the occupation force in Japan, receiving an honorable discharge in August 1946. On February 6, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Etta Marshall of Bedford, Iowa in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After the wedding Dale and Mary moved to the farmhouse where he was born. Two sons were born to this union, James Dale and Edward Lee. Dale was a life long farmer operating a diversified crop and livestock operation following the latest technology and farming practices. He had many other interests he enjoyed. Dale was an avid fisherman, deer hunter, and pitch player. He was a member of the New Market American Legion Post 300, a member of the Farm Bureau, Taylor County Cattlemen's Association, Iowa Pork Producers, salesman for Garst Seed Company for thirty years, and eighteen-year leader of the Dallas Boys 4-H Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henning and Lillian Hanson; brothers, Maurice and Lorence and sisters, Dorothy Brummett and Arlene Orme. Dale is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Mary Etta Hanson of Clarinda, Iowa; sons, James of New Market, Iowa and Edward of Clarinda, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Frank Marshall and wife Shana of Carson City, Nevada, and David Marshall of Fredericksburg, Virginia; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
[HANSON, LILLIAN CHARLOTTE CHRISTELL] During her early life she was confirmed in the Saron Lutheran Church in Chicago. She lived there until the time of her marriage to Henning Hanson on Oct. 26, 1910 in the Saron Church. To this union were born five children Maurice of Clearfield, Mrs Paul Brummett (Dorothy) of Bedford, Lorence of New Market Mrs Marvin Orme (Arlene) of Nodaway and Dale of New Market. The first year of their married life was spent on a farm south of Stanton, Iowa. They then moved to a farm In Nodaway Township, Taylor County Iowa. She lived in this vicinity until Jan 10, 1969, when she was taken to the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, Iowa. They had celebrated their fifty-eighth wedding anniversary on Oct 26, 1968. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Henning, the three sons and their wives, the two daughters and their husbands, eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a brother Evar Christell and a sister Rosie Christell both of Chicago; also several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Preceding her in death were her father and mother, three brothers and one sister. She enjoyed membership of the New Market Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a charter member of the social order of the Bausant of Shenandoah, Iowa. Her love for her home and family came first and she will be greatly missed.
[HESS, IDA KATE DUER] Casket bearers included Harley Bangston, Robert Rusk, Ermel Todd, Raymond Eitzen, Walter Eitzen and Dale Stroud. Flower bearers were Mrs. Harley Bangston and Mrs. Walter Eitzen. Music was by Mrs. Martin Taylor accompanied by Mrs. Frances Wheeler in the following selections, "In the Garden" and "Beyond The Sunset." Concluding service and interment was in Guss Cemetery. Ida Kate Duer of Villisca, daughter of Harry and Isabelle Duer was born Jan. 2, 1881 near Monmouth, Ill., and passed away Jan. 12, 1962 in the Corning Rest Home, at the age of 81 years and 10 days. Her family moved to Iowa when she was 1 year old and she lived her life in Adams, Taylor, and Montgomery counties. On Jan. 2, 1961 she was united in marriage to John Hess. He preceded her in death in April 1961. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive. They are Geneva Lane and Wilbur Hess of Prescott, Leslie Hess of Villisca, Lois Garrett and Lynn Hess of Washougal, Washington, also 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren besides two sisters, Elizabeth Firkins and Susie Rogers, both of Corning. She has been a most patient sufferer the past two years and was always grateful for the kind care she received in the Shady Lawn Nursing Home and the Corning Rest Home. She was a kind and loving mother and a faithful wife. She was a member of the Iveyville Methodist, church, later transferring to the Villisca Methodist church.
[HESS, JOHN HENRY] Pallbearers included Harley Bangston, Raymond Eitzen, Dale Stroud, Robert Rusk, Walter Eitzen and Ermel Todd. Flower bearers were Mrs. Harley Bangston and Mrs. Robert Rusk. The music was by Mrs. Martin Taylor assisted by Mrs. Frances Wheeler. Concluding service and interment was in Guss cemetery. John Henry Hess, son of Londona and Henrietta Hess, was born Feb. 26, 1877 in Taylor County, Iowa and passed away at the Shady Lawn Rest Home April 22, 1961 after a short illness. He was the youngest of a large family, all of whom have preceded him in death. On January 2, 1901 he was united in marriage to Ida Kate Duer. They were privileged to observe their 60th anniversary this year. He is survived by his wife and five children, Lynn Hess, Lois Garrett of Washougal, Washington, Leslie Hess of Villisca, Wilbur Hess and Geneva Lane of Prescott. Also ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Iveyville for a number of years, and later transferred to the Villisca Methodist Church. He was a good husband and father and valued his friendships highly.

[JOHNSON, FLOYD ALLEN] He was married September 14, 1930, to Leona Opal Berringer who preceded him in death June 23, 1989. Floyd was a farm[er] until his retirement. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Clark and husband Elvin (Doc) Clark of Braddyville, a grandson Randy Clark and wife Carmen of Clarinda, great grandson Andrew Clark, brothers George Walter Johnson of Nodaway, Iowa, and Wilbur (Shorty) Johnson of Corning, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, 3 brothers Albert Johnson, Francis Johnson, and Delbert Johnson, and one sister in infancy. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 6, at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Pastor' Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Masonic rites were held at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home followed by visitation. Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Guss.
[KENDRICK, MARTHA LUELLEN MAUDERLY] Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m., Friday evening. Mrs. Kendrick died Tuesday evening en route to Omaha from the Red Oak hospital. She had been taken to Red Oak from her home earlier in the day. She was born Jan. 24, 1899, near Nodaway, the daughter of Joseph and Ida Ridnour Mauderly. On Dec. 15, 1915 she was married to Murl Kendrick who survives. Other survivors include three children: Chester Kendrick, New Market, Mrs. Cleo Lessner, Grosse Ile, Mi, and Thelbert Kendrick, New Market. There are three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Burial will be in the Guss cemetery.
[KENDRICK, MARTHA LUELLEN MAUDERLY] Cleo Lessener [Lessner] from Gross Isle, Mi, the daughter of M/M Murl Kendrick will be returning to her home Tuesday. Cleo's oldest daughter, Martha and her husband, Chuck Rose and children, David and Jason from Hastings, Mi, another daughter, Judy Blackburn from Jerry City, Oh, also came for Mrs. Kendrick's services. Dennie Kendrick came Thursday from Broken Arrow, Ok, for his grandmother's services; he returned home Monday. Randy Kendrick came Friday evening from Ames and returned home Monday.
[LAWSON, OPAL MAYBELL DAVIS] When she failed to return to the house after doing chores, help was called and she was found a short distance from her home, having died of an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home with burial in the Guss Cemetery with Rev don Comstock in charge, Aletha Hutchings providing music and Judy Stogdill singing. Mrs Lawson was born Sept 26, 1910, at Hawk Point, Mo, the daughter of Beverly and Maybell Howard Davis. On Sept 11, 1929 she was married to Bryan Lawson at Shenandoah. They have lived on the same farm three miles northeast of Hawleyville since that time. Besides her husband of the home she is survived by three children, Mrs. Mervin (Donna) Chubick of Thurman, Mrs Delmar (Delma) Robb of Omaha, and Alvin Lawson of Clarinda, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Three brothers are Ralph Briggs of Clearfield, Floyd Briggs, Lawrence, Kan. and Frank Briggs of Shenandoah, and one sister Mary Gohn of Madrid. Her mother is Mrs Maybell Briggs of Bedford.
[LAWSON, WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN] He was born Aug. 13, 1902 near Hepburn and spent most of his life farming in the New Market area. Survivors include his wife Elsie (Pierson) Lawson of Corning, three children, Mrs. Elmer (Delma) Robb of Topeka, Ks; Mrs. Ross (Donna) Scott, of Hastings, Ia, and Alvin Lawson of Council Bluffs, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Opal Maybell Lawson in 1971. Funeral services will be this Saturday at 2 pm at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with burial in the Guss cemetery.
[MCCOY, BERNICE IRENE STROUD] She was a member of the Maple Grove Methodist Church, where she served on the Ladies Aid and was a charter member. In 1974 Bernice and Ted celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Her parents and two infant brothers preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband Ted; her daughter Delores and husband Harold Steeve of Bedford; four grandchildren, Norman of Villisca, Kraig of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Renee and husband Dennis White of Hopkins, Mo. and Curtis of Bedford; one great grandchild Jessika of Blockton; brother Dale of Nodaway; and sister Marjorie Schrader and husband Cecil of Sidney. Services were held Saturday, June 16, 1979 from the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca with the Reverend Elliott Bodwell officiating. Music was provided by Mrs Quincy Dunn as organist and Norman Weaver, soloist. Musical selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer". In charge of the registry book was Mrs Deibert Schroeder. Flower bearers were Mrs Jim Milligan, Mrs Clifford Gill and Mrs Paul Firkins. Casket bearers were Jim Milligan, Roger Schrader, Paul Firkins, Adrian Andrew, Larry Stamps and Clifford Gill. Interment was at the Guss Cemetery, Guss, Iowa. Arrangements were provided by Wolfe Funeral Home of Villisca, Iowa.
[MCCOY, DONALD CLAIRE] He lived his early life in the Guss community, moving to a farm near Gravity with his parents when a young man. He was an active- member of the IOOF Lodge. He later lived in Gravity until his health failed. He had been residing in Bedford at the Pearl Terrace Manor until a week before his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harley, sister Helen, a brother-in-law Harry Cooney and a sister-in-law Mrs Alva (Isabel) McCoy. He is survived by four sisters; Mrs Vivian Andrew and husband Ralph, Mrs Mable Cooney, Mrs Reva Stamps and husband Ray, Mrs Maravene Spring and husband Roy; two brothers, Ted McCoy and wife Bernice and Alva McCoy; also a sister-in-law Mrs Pearl McCoy; many nieces and nephews who were loved by him. He also leaves a host of friends. Arrangements were by Shum-Novinger Funeral Home. The minister was Carl Cummings, Music was recorded vocal-organ selections. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Parrish, Darrel Baker, Clyde Robey and Kenneth Meyers. Acting Pallbearers were nephews Robert McCoy, Adrain Andrew, Leonard Cooney, John Cooney, Dean Stamps, Curtis Stamps. Interment was at the Guss Cemetery.
[MCCOY, TEDDIE OLIVER] He passed away at his home, January 11, 1983, at the age of 78 years. He grew to early manhood in Page and Taylor Counties. He was baptized into the Maple Grove Methodist Church at an early age. On December 24, 1924, he was united in marriage to Bernice Stroud. To this union one daughter was born. They lived on a farm until 1932 when they moved to Guss and he ran a blacksmith shop. In 1946, they moved to Villisca where he continued as a blacksmith. In 1974 Ted and Bernice celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice in June 1979, his parents, two brothers, and three sisters. Survivors are his daughter Delores and husband Harold Steeve; four grandchildren: Norman Weaver, Richmond, Va.; Kraig and Ann Weaver, St. Cloud, Mn.; Dennis and Renee White, Bedford; and Curtis Weaver, Bedford; three great grandchildren: Jessika Weaver, Clovis, N.M.; and James Dean and Andrea Lyn White, Bedford; one brother Alva of Spokane, Wa.; and two sisters Mrs Ray Stamps, Gravity, and Mrs Ray Spring, Corning; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Friday, January 14, 1983, at the Wolfe Funeral Home, Villisca, la., with the Reverend Clair Kerns officiating. Norman Weaver was the soloist and Martin Hentsch was the organist. At the register were Judy Schroeder and Opal Milligan. Casket bearers were Jim Milligan, Adrian Andrew, Steve Stein, Delbert Schroeder, Roger Schrader, Dean Stamps, Fred Scholey, and Greg Franson. Honorary bearers were Larry Stamps, Paul Firkins, Kenneth Gray, Jim Gill, Dick Wright, and Earl Jones. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Guss, Ia.
[MCFARLING, JOHN WESLEY] Funeral services will be held this Friday afternoon at the Guss Methodist church. Mr. McFarling was born May 13, 1851, in Ohio. He resided on a farm one-half mile west of Guss for forty-two years, and moved from there to the vicinity southeast of Nodaway sixteen months ago. Mr. and Mrs. McFarling were married September 30, 1891. They are the parents of one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Dickover of Ashland, Neb. Besides his wife and daughter, Mr. McFarling is survived by one brother, William McFarling, of the Nodaway vicinity. Mrs. Dickover was with her parents most of the time during her father's illness and was with him at the time of his death.
[MAXWELL, FLORENCE MAE BURLEY] Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 25th from the Maple Grove Methodist Church at Guss, the Reverend Ronald Blix officiating. Burial was at the Guss Cemetery. She lived in Page County until 1918 when her parents moved to near Guss in Taylor County. She married Walter Segriff Maxwell in 1920 at the home of her parents. Her husband preceded her in death on July 4, 1967. Survivors include two sons - Jay of Alamosa, Colorado; Gerald of Nodaway, Iowa; twin daughters - Mrs Victor Blume of Clarinda; and Mrs Cecil Schaffer, Red Oak; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a sister Gladice Cook of Washington; two brothers, Claude Burley of Valley City, North Dakota; and Ray Burley of Waukesha, Wisconsin. She was a member of the Maple Grove Methodist Church and a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post at Nodaway. Casket bearers for the service were Paul Mitchell, Darrell Schrader, Kenneth Fudge, Wayne Johnson, Bill Fitzwater and Dale Stoud. Flower bearers were Gladice Mains and Wilma Hughes. Music was provided by Hartford Cooper, accompanied by Mrs Hartford Cooper. Musical selections were "Beyond The Sunset" and "Abide With Me". In charge of the registry were Norma Schaffer and Vicki Sunderman. Arrangements were provided by Sutphen Funeral Home of Villisca, Iowa.
[MAXWELL, WALTER SEGRIFF] Walter Segriff Maxwell, son of Ida Segriff and Everett Brenton Maxwell was born March 14, 1895 and passed away at Murphy Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, on July 4, 1967, at the age of 72 years, 2 months and 20 days. He was united in marriage to Florence Burley, January 14, 1920, at the home of her parents. To this union were born two sons Jay of Alamosa, Colorado, and Gerald of Nodaway; twin daughters, Mrs. Victor (Joan) Blume of Clarinda and Mrs. Cecil (Jean) Schaffer of Red Oak. He farmed until five years ago when failing health forced him to retire. He was a member of the Veterans of World War I, and the American Legion. He is also survived by a sister, Ruby Bell of Longmont Colorado, and eleven grandchildren. They include: Gregory Maxwell of Denver, Colorado; Jimmy Maxwell of Alamosa, Colorado; Dennis Maxwell, Douglas Maxwell and Dallas Maxwell all of Nodaway; Gary Blume, Vicki Blume, Rodney Blume and Curtis Blume, all of Clarinda; Norma Jean Schaffer, and Steven Schaffer both of Red Oak. Also two daughters-in-law survive. They are Susie Grace Maxwell and Reba Maxwell, two sons-in-law Victor Blume and Cecil Schaffer.

[MUCKEY, ANNA BRIDGET SHUM] The funeral was held at the Guss Methodist church yesterday at 1 o'clock, being very largely attended, the floral offerings also being many and beautiful. The funeral was conducted by Rev. L. B. Carpenter, an old friend of the family, and a former pastor of the Guss Methodist church. The pallbearers were Roy Akers, Neal Akers, Doyle Cree, Rolla Muckey, Estel Warner and Frank Webb. She was laid to rest in the Guss cemetery. The following obituary was read at the funeral: "Anna Shum, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Shum, was born in Page County, Ia., Feb. 18, 1876. She was united in marriage to Curry J. Muckey Nov. 8, 1892. To them were born three children. Mrs. Muckey was a kind and loving wife and mother, an unselfish neighbor, always giving aid in sickness when duty called her. In 1900 the family moved to their present home at which place her death occurred, July 12, 1929, at the age of 53 years, 4 months and 24 days. [MUCKEY, CURRY JEREMIAH] He was united in marriage to Annie. B. Shum, Nov. 8, 1892. She preceded him in death July 12, 1929. To them were born three children, Mrs. Leila Webb, Mrs. lone Werner and Rollie Muckey, all living on farms nearby. In 1900 the family moved to his present home at which place his death occurred, July 13, 1933, at the age of 65 years, 7 months, 12 days. He was married again in 1930 to Mrs. Stella Snodderly. He leaves to mourn his death besides his wife and children, four grandchildren and seven sisters, Mrs. Louise Emily, Elk Mound, Wis., Mrs. Ida Piper, Sharpsburg, Iowa, Mrs Josephine Ferris, Winchester, Kans., Mrs. Katherine Taylor, Potter, Kans., Mrs. Mahala Stiverson, Graham, Mo., Mrs Ada Shum, San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Mabel Cree, Colorado Springs, Colo. The funeral services were held at the Guss church Saturday afternoon, Rev. Carpenter of Villisca being in charge. Pallbearers were Curt McCoy, Homer Davis, Walter Lawger, Fred Frost, Edward Maxwell and Wilbur Ellison. Music was furnished by folks from Villisca. Burial was in the Guss cemetery.
[NICHOLS, LEWIS] Mr Nichols, a retired farmer was born at Kirkwood, Ill. His wife preceded him in death in 1953. He had made his home recently with a daughter, Mrs Ralph (Ellen) Pinkerton at Quimby, Ia, and had also lived with another daughter, Mrs Alva (Vida) Hicks at Gravity. Also surviving is a son, Wayne E Nichols of Adair. The Rev Lester Greenwood officiated at the service at the Walker Funeral Home here. Interment was in the Guss Cemetery.

[NICHOLS, MARY BLANCHE ANDREW] Mrs Ralph Andrew, Mrs Evan Andrew, Mrs Ralph Huntington, Mrs Gilbert Branan and Mrs Glen Oxley and Mrs Dale Anderson were some of the ladies helping with the serving of 51 at the Guss church basement to a lunch for the relatives. Most of the above group called on Mr and Mrs Alva Hicks and their houseguests, Mr Lou Nichols and Mr and Mrs Ralph Pinkerton of Quimby in the afternoon.
[NICHOLS, MARY BLANCHE ANDREW] On October 6, 1890 she was united in marriage to Lewis Nichols at Bedford, Iowa. To this union were born three children. During the many years that Mrs Nichols lived in tho Guss community she was a member of the Maple Grove church and took an active part in the church activities. In 1914 the family moved to Indianola, Iowa and lived there until 1942 when they moved to Bedford. Because of falling health she has resided since 1952 in the homes of her daughters. She is survived by her husband, Lewis Nichols and children Mrs Alva Hicks, Gravity, Mrs Ralph Pinkerton, Quimby, Iowa; and Wayne E Nichols, Adair. Iowa. Four grandchildren, Corwyn Hicks, Indianola; Talton Hicks, Gravity; Bruce Hicks, Avoca and Keith Nichols, Adair and five great grandchildren. Also two sisters and three brothers. Funeral services were conducted from the Walker funeral home at 11 o'clock, Saturday, November 28, 1953 with the Rev Lester Greenwood in charge. Vocal soloist was Garland Hall Andrew accompanied by Aletha Hutchings at the console Burial was at the Guss cemetery.
[PIERCE, GEORGE LESLIE] He is survived by his wife, Mary and son Robert and family of San Diego. A brother, Eldon Pierce and family of Higbee, Mo., a sister, Grace Beck and family of Atlantic, and a sister, Minnie McFarland and family of Nodaway, as well as an uncle, Dan Pierce and family of Villisca, survive him. George Pierce, son of Herbert and Alice Pierce, was born March 31, 1899, in Taylor county, and grew to young manhood there and also resided in Montgomery county. On March 17, 1921, he was united in marriage to Mary Lindberg of Villisca. To this union one son Robert was born. The family resided in Red Oak a number of years, where George was employed at the West Furniture Store. In 1945 the family moved to San Diego, where they have since resided. Here to attend the funeral, and guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Lindberg were Mrs. George L. Pierce of National City, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Pierce and family of San Diego, Mr. and Mrs. Junior Lindberg and family of Clarinda, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Lewis and family of Red Oak, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon E. Fisher of Shenandoah, Carl Lindberg and Hulda Mullins.

Mary Ruth Pierce, daughter of Carl and Matilda Nelson Lindberg, was born September 26, 1901, in Page County, Ia., and passed away Friday, April 17, 1987, at the Valley Convalescent Home in El Centro, Ca. Mrs Pierce was married to George L. [eslie] Pierce, who preceded her in death in June of 1961. She is survived by one son, Robert Pierce, of Ocotillo, Ca.; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two brothers, Elmer Lindberg of Villisca, Paul Lindberg of Bradenton, Fl., and one sister, Martha Taylor of El Centro, Ca.
[SCHRADER, CECIL THAINE] On January 12, 1945, he was married to Marjorie Stroud in Clarinda. Cecil farmed for a time near Sidney and worked for 17 years as custodian of the Sidney Public Schools retiring in 1992 during which time he also served as a part time bus driver. He then drove the preschool bus between Sidney and Hamburg from 1992 to 1997. Cecil was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Avis Schrader. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Schrader of Sidney; son, Roger Schrader and wife Sharon of Fremont, Neb.; two grandchildren, four great grandchildren; two sisters, Reba Maxwell of Villisca, and Eulah Steffen of Griswold; two brothers, Kendall Schrader of Shenandoah, and Darrell Schrader of Villisca; numerous nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, at the Sidney United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Metz officiating. Memorials are to the Sidney United Methodist Church or the Sidney Senior Center. Graveside services were held Saturday, May 8, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Guss, Iowa. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney was in charge of arrangements.

[TAYLOR, DORR COLEMAN] Son of Casius and Eliza Taylor, he was born in Page County and spent his early life there. He farmed east of Villisca and moved to Red Oak in 1921. He was married Sept. 2, 1915, to Martha C. [hristina] Lindberg who survives him. He was the last member of his immediate family. Burial in the Guss cemetery.
[TAYLOR, MARTHA CHRISTINA LINDBERG] Martha, daughter of Carl and Matilda Nelson Lindberg, was born August 11, 1891, in Iowa and passed away July 16, 1989 at El Centro Regional Medical Center in El Centro. She was married to Dorr C. [oleman] Taylor on September 2,1915, in Maryville, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband; and one sister, Mary Ruth Pierce. Martha is survived by two brothers, Elmer Lindberg of Villisca, and Paul Lindberg of Bradenton, Fl.; and one sister, Bertha Fisher of Shenandoah. Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
[WALTERS, LURETTA "ETTA" DEGROFFT] The music was by Mrs. Kishpaugh, and granddaughter of the deceased had charge of the flowers. The pallbearers were Donald Gray, Carroll Gray, Bob Gray, Jack Stamps, Max Gray, Arthur Gray, Kendall Schrader and Ivan Carmichael, and interment was in the Guss cemetery. The Sutphen funeral home was in charge. Etta DeGrofft, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lyman DeGrofft, was born March 3, 1873, In Piatt county Illinois and was 74 years old at her death. She moved with her parents to Nebraska and was married to George Walters They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary five years ago last March, and twelve days was the longest time they were ever apart during their married life. To them were born three children, Mrs Lee Gray and Wesley Walters of Guss and Mrs. John Alexander of Gravity. Besides her husband and children, Mrs Walters leaves eleven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, four brothers and six sisters. One brother and a sister preceded her in death. Mr. and Mrs. George DeGrofft of Ottumwa were with her during the last eight weeks of her life. Others there were Sam DeGrofft, Mansfield, Ill.; Mrs. W. F. Lee, Guss; Mrs. Loren McConkey, Storm Lake, Ia.; Mrs. Gus Woodring, Grimes; Alice DeLand, Chicago; Mrs. Leonard Derr, Blair, Mont, and many other relatives and friends. Mrs. Walters was a member of the Methodist church of Guss.
[WRIGHT, EDITH GRACE LAWGER] Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 2 p. m. at the Methodist church in Villisca, conducted by the Rev. Paul C Ellis. The singing was by Cecil Weaver, accompanied by Frances Wheeler, and in charge of the flowers were Mrs. Icle Fisher and Mrs. Pauline Day. Pallbearers were Wesley Walters, Gerald Maxwell, Ronald Stewart, Fred Lewis, Fredrick Fisher and Ed Day, and interment was in the Guss cemetery. Sutphen funeral home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. T. [homas] J [efferson] Wright, nee Edith Lawger, was born in Stockholm, Sweden, Sept. 17, 1865, and at the age of three years she came to Villisca with her parents. The family established themselves on a farm near Guss. She attended high school at Clarinda and normal school at Shenandoah, after which she taught school in the vicinity of Guss for several years. On Feb. 16, 1899, Edith Lawger and Tom Wright were married at Clarinda and settled on a farm at Guss where for a number of years Mr. Wright also operated a general store. In order to obtain better educational facilities for their children, Mr. and Mrs. Mr. Wright moved to Villisca in 1917 where they lived until Mr. Wright died May 12, 1955. In August 1955, Mrs. Wright accompanied her two daughters to San Bernardino, Calif., to make her home with them. There she lived happily until her sudden death, which occurred at 6 p. m., Friday, Feb. 10, following a heart attack. The survivors are her daughters, Helen and Cleo, who are in the school system at San Bernardino, Calif.; and her son, Yale, in business in Villisca, her grandchildren, Jack Wright of Villisca, Mrs. Nancy Violette and David Henson, of San Bernardino, and one great-granddaughter, Peggy, daughter of Jack Wright. She leaves also a younger brother, Walter Lawger of New Market.
[WRIGHT, KATHRYN ADALYNE "SIS" WENDLING DUNN] Sis, daughter of Harry and Nelle Wendling, was born August 23, 1908, in Montgomery County near Villisca and spent her entire life in this area. Sis grew up on a farm with her two brothers and graduated from Villisca High School in 1926. She was active in basketball, sang in the glee club and served as president of her class. Following graduation she taught in country school and later worked in the local bank. In 1930 Sis married Stanley Dunn who proceeded her in death in April 1951. She married Yale Wright in 1956. While living on a farm in the Guss area, Sis and Yale were active in the Nodaway Saddle Club and made appearances at the Sidney Rodeo. After moving to town, they were active in the First Presbyterian Church, which she joined in 1927. Together they directed the refurbishing of the front pews of the sanctuary. In recognition of her work on the Board of Deacons, Presbyterian Women, and as a willing volunteer at the Berean Rummage Sales, church dinners and receptions, Sunday School classes and more, Sis was named "Outstanding Senior Church Member" in 1990 by the Synod of Lakes and Prairies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Sis represented the church on the Villisca Churches Nursing Home, Inc. Board for several years and continued her volunteer work with the residents of the Good Samaritan Center since 1977. Her activities with which she assisted included cookouts, craft sales, picnics, the Melodiers Dance Band, and providing transportation for the residents. She helped style hair and always played cards with the residents. Most recently Sis was intently involved in the development of Redmon Village townhouses. In recognition of her service at the Good Samaritan, Sis was honored as the "Volunteer of the Year" in 1990. Her volunteer work was not restricted to her church and the care center. She spent hours working freely in the community with such organizations as the American Red Cross blood bank. On July 7, 1992, Sis was presented with the "Villisca Citizen of the Year Award", by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8998 and the VFW Auxiliary of Villisca. The lives of many people were made richer through her friendship, her faith and her willingness to care. Sis was proceeded in death by brothers Morris and Hugh Everett, Survivors include Yale's daughter-in-law, Mrs Jack Wright and her families, Peggy and husband Randy Jackson, Matt and Jenny; Tom and Kerin Wright, Jeff, Daniel, Dylan and Emma, all of Villisca; and Dennis and Doris Wright, Amanda and Jordan of Folsom, CA. Memorials will be given to the First Presbyterian Church and the Villisca Good Samaritan Center. Sutphen-Beaty Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Jefferson Wright, son of Benjamin and Nancy Wright, was born in the State of Kentucky June 19, 1863. At ten years of age he moved to Iowa with his family and lived in the Guss community in Taylor County. In February of 1899 he was married to Edith Lawger and to them were born three children, Helen and Mrs. Cleo Henson of San Bernardino, Calif., and Yale of Villisca. In 1917 Tom Wright retired from active farming and made his home in Villisca until his passing, following an illness of several weeks. He was a member of the Methodist church, first in the Guss community and later in Villisca. Survived by his wife, Edith, his three children, three grandchildren, one great grandchild and three sisters, Mrs. Sue Lewis and Mrs. Alpha Marsh of Villisca and Mrs Mae Nichols of Centralia, Wash.
[WRIGHT, THOMAS JEFFERSON "TOM"]
[WRIGHT, YALE JOHN] Yale was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Villisca, a fifty-year Mason and an honorary member of the Villisca Volunteer Fire Department. He was in business in Villisca for some thirty years, having a dry cleaning establishment and later a ladies ready to wear store. These businesses were closed in 1959 and he spent the next thirteen years on a farm in the Guss area. He retired from the farm in 1973 and moved to Villisca, where he resided until his death. He is survived by his wife Kathryn; a son Jack and his wife Joanne, three grandchildren, Mrs. Randy (Peggy Jackson,) Tom and Dennis Wright, all of Villisca; two sisters, Helen Wright and Cleo Henson of Rialto, California also survive. Numerous relatives and friends also survive. Sutphen Funeral Home was in charge of a memorial service held on Sunday, July 9, 1978 at the Presbyterian Church with Dr Chris Herring officiating.
