Final Rites Held April 14 For Walter Alexander

Funeral services for Walter Glen Alexander, 67, of Bedford, were held April 14 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Dwayne Madsen officiating. Mr. Alexander died April 12, 1978 in his Bedford home. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Walter Glen Alexander, son of Jennie and Charles Alexander, was born August 2, 1910 in Gravity, Iowa. He lived in Gravity and grew to maturity in Gravity where he attended the public school and the Methodist Church.

On June 24, 1931 he was united in marriage to Madge Humbert at Blockton, Iowa and they lived in Gravity and Bedford communities.

To this union one child was born, Norma Jean.

He was employed by Cudahays for 20 years and since then he was self-employed.

Mr. Alexander was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Madge; daughter Norma Jean Gold; son-in-law Jack gold; and grandchildren: Rodney Jene Gold; Janet Lee Gold, Jon Michael Gold and JoEllyn Kay Gold.

Mr. Alexander was a member of the Bedford United Methodist church.

He was a kind and considerate husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Rev. Dwayne Madsen wrote the following Memorial to Walter Alexander.

Walter Alexander died last Wednesday, and with his passing, came the end of an era. The community knew him as a handy man, his shop was called Alexander's Fix-it Shop, but he was an artist and a craftsman.

It will soon be three years since Carl Cummings led me to Walt and Madge, his wife, as the new Methodist minister. I remember thinking as I looked at Walt the first time---he's not a very big man. But from the moment he reached out to shake my hand, I was amazed at the size of his hands. Since I grew to know him, he has grown to be a big man in my life. I would describe him as "a small man with a big heart."

Walt had the well-earned reputation of being able to fix almost anything, and we depended upon him to take our worn-out junk and make it better than it was when new. How often did we carry something into his shop, and watching him take in his hands, carefully look it over, check it out, then turn with a little smile to say, "O, I think we can fix it." And then when we asked him how much it would cost, his answer, "It shouldn't be more than a couple of dollars."

Then last fall he was faced with the biggest job of his life as we found out that Walt had cancer. He worked hard to overcome it—didn't give up until the end, working on, keeping that marvelous sense of humor, encouraging us when we tried to encourage him. But, this was one job that even Walt couldn't do, and we sadly stood by his bed the other morning to see enter into eternal rest.

Walt was born and grew up in the Gravity area, and spent most of his life in the Bedford and Gravity communities. His stories about the area, and he dearly loved a story, were fascinating lessons in local history and folklore. Often his cronies came by the shop to reminisce about earlier times when life was simpler. His work as carpenter, maintenance supervisor for Cudahays, Lucas Feed and for the Bedford Water Department had taught him about all one could know about machinery. Along the way he had learned upholstery, carpet-laying, restoring antiques, and about anything else one can know around a shop.

I quickly learned how gifted Walt was with his hands. It was not unusual for him to be making a machine part, rebuilding an antique, restoring a piece of furniture, or creating a new item. It seemed that if one couldn't find something, chances are that Walt could make it. During the past year we watched him painstakingly carve an oak lion's paw for an antique, restore a valuable carved horse from a merry-go-round, and many other jobs brought into his shop.

His religion was of the quiet kind, but it was as if he knew what the Bible required of a man in Colossians 3:17, 24.

"And whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."

And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance. . ."
