Deloris Arlene Reitter Henson, daughter of Michael John Reitter and Edna Viola Smith Reitter Kersten was born May 2, 1927 in Palisade, Nebraska and departed this life on September 21, 1997 at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston. She made her home in Palisade until she was 7 when her father
passed away and her mother and she came to Blockton. She was baptized and
became a member of the Christian Church. She attended the Blockton Public
Schools and graduated in 1945.
On January 8, 1945 she married Orlin Henson. They had two sons, Steven and Craig. Surviving Deloris are her husband Orlin; sons Steven and wife Neila of Perry, Iowa and Craig and wife Diane of Malvern, Iowa; also three grandsons, Brett and Cory Henson and Mark Morhaus; and a friend who was a daughter to her, Jane Saville and husband Doyle; also a very special friend, Mary Weaver. Services were held September 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Blockton Christian Church with Rev. Scott Marcum officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blockton. Funeral services for George F. Hillers were held Friday, April 10, 1992 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home with, Pastor Bill Summitt and Pastor Bob Pinkerton officiating. Military honors were conducted by Blockton American Legion Post No. 443. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa. George Fredrick Hillers was born January 24, 1905, the first of four children born to Karl and Anna Hillers. He passed away on April 7, 1992 at the age of 87 years. George attended country school and graduated from Blockton High School. After graduation he attended the University of Commerce in Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Hillers worked as bookkeeper for both Henson & Kettle and Blockton Oil, was a postal clerk in Blockton and as clerk for the Magistrate in Bedford, Iowa. He enjoyed carpentry work and volunteered many hours to the up keeping of the Rose Hill Cemetery. He served as an Army Medic with the 11th Evacuation Hospital in Europe during World War II. He was married to [Georgia] Sarepta Yarger on February 18, 1954. She preceded him in death on September 22, 1968. With the exception of his years in service and in Florida after his marriage, Taylor County had been his home until entering Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr in 1987, due to failing health. Mr. Hillers was a member of the Blockton Baptist Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge. Those preceding him in death other than his beloved Sarepta were his parents, brother Christie and sister, Katherine Kemery and mother-in-law, Mary Yarger. Survivors include his sister, Mary Jennings of West Branch, Iowa, sisters-in-law, Lenora Hillers of Glenwood, Janell Wilson of Savannah, Mo., several nieces, nephews and a host of friends whom George loved dearly. (Tuck) Johnston of Council Bluffs died early February 12 at Veterans Hospital in Omaha following an extended illness. Born at Leon, he had lived about 13 years in Blockton, about 14 years in Clarinda and the past three years in Council Bluffs. He had worked as a farmer, salesman, lab worker, and held the post of night supervisor for a number of years at the Mental Health Institute at Clarinda. Mr. Johnston served in the Sea Bees for two years and saw action on Saipan. He was a 24-year continuous member of the American Legion. Survivors include: wife, Vivian Johnston; son, Lyman Tully Johnston, Jr. of Tacoma, Wash.; four daughters, Mrs. Luverne (Beverly) Kashatka [Koshatka] of Iowa City, Mrs. Eldon (Mary) Stroburg of Blockton, Mrs. LeRoy (Phoebe) Rassmussen [Rasmussen] of Concord, New Hampshire, Mrs. Lynn (Barbara) Swanson of Waukee, Ia.; two brothers, Earl Johnston of Decatur, Ia., and Chester of Des Moines; six sisters, Mrs. James Parker and Mrs. Sylvia Pitkin both of Castle Hock, Wash., Mrs. Ora Brenizer of Ridgeway, Ia., and Mrs. Russell Griffin of Des Moines, Mrs. Opal Lewis of Vancouver, Wash. and Mrs. Freda Batterman of Humboldt, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Feb. 13 at the Methodist Church at Blockton. Rev. Clarence Landis, pastor of that church, officiated with the Rev. Ernest Stewart, pastor of the Methodist Church at Eagle, Nebr., assisting. Interment was in the Blockton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were made through the Meyer Funeral Home of Council Bluffs. at Lamoni, Iowa on February 13, 1901.
Vivian lived and grew to maturity in Lamoni, Iowa where she attended the public schools and was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. On November 6, 1924 she was united in marriage to Lyman Tully Johnston, Senior at Lamoni, Iowa and they lived on a homestead in Crook County, Wy. To this union five children were born: Lyman Tully, Junior; Beverly [Vivian] of Iowa City, Iowa; Mary [Arlene] of Blockton, Iowa; Phoebe of Boston, Mass. and Barbara [Louise] of Des Moines, Iowa. Vivian was employed in the education field, teaching for many years and retiring from her work as a librarian. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, Vaughn McElroy. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Lyman T. Johnston; her daughters, Beverly Koshatka, Mary Stroburg, Phoebe Rasmussen, and Barbara Swansen; 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Vivian was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints; the American Legion Auxiliary; and the Blockton Garden Club. Estella May Sims, daughter of Obadiah and Margaret [Everrode] Sims, was born in Columbus, Indiana, March 26, 1863, and died March 30, 1944 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Guy Ogle in Blockton, aged 81 years and 4 days. When three years of age she came west with her parents in a covered wagon and located in Worth County, Mo., which remained her girlhood home. On March 17, 1892 she was married to E. [lias] S. [tone] Keenan in Grant City, Mo., and to them were born two children, Lew who lives on a farm north of Blockton, and Mrs. Guy Ogle of Blockton. Her husband preceded her in death December 2[9], 1920, since which time she had made her home with her children. Four sisters and one brother preceded her in death. She had eight grandchildren and one great grand child. Since her marriage Mrs. Keenan had lived continuously in the Blockton neighborhood.. She united with the Baptist church in early life but later entered the Methodist church with her family. She remained a regular attendant and a zealous worker. Up to the last she carried on a correspondence with her grandsons in the service. In the passing of Mrs. Keenan the community has lost a true friend, one whose life was devoted to service, and in the lives of those who knew her, her influence will still live. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 2, at the Ogle home in Blockton, conducted by the Methodist pastor, and burial was in the Blockton cemetery. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, a sister, Mona Ogle, and an infant son, Albert. He joined the Methodist Church at Blockton when a small boy, and later changed his membership to Clearfield. He is survived by his wife, Gladys, 3 sons, Lee [Edward] of Maloy, Robert [Tilton] of Omaha, and [Carl] Marion of Culver City, Calif.; 3 daughters, Dorothy Hall of Stuart, Jean Wurster of Lenox and [Lula] Virginia Siverly of Clearfield. Brief funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. W. B. Stark the same day after which the remains were interred in the Blockton cemetery. Bedford Times-Press Thursday January 17, 1952 p. 7 Blockton—John S. Kennedy, long-time resident of the Blockton community, died Jan. 13. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. A. Abbott. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery. John Scott Kennedy, son of Elizabeth and Jacob Kennedy was born at Abingdon, Ill., Sept. 24, 1863 and died at the age of 88 years, three months, 19 days. He came to Taylor County, Iowa with his parents in 1875. They resided on a farm near Bedford until 1883, when they went to Blockton, where he remained for 60 years, except for three years spent in Lincoln, Nebr., as a carpenter. He was married to Mary Catherine Severns on Dec. 8, 1889. To them were born six children. One child, Flossie, died in infancy. He was a charter member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Blockton and was also a charter member of the Farmer’s Mutual Insurance company of Bedford. He was a director until the past year when he resigned because of ill health. He is survived by three daughters, Sara Carlson of Des Moines, Ethel Gruber of Shenandoah and Eunice Hamilton of Blockton; two sons, George Kennedy of Hood River, Ore., and Clifford Kennedy of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Anna Driver of St. Joseph, Mo. Funeral services for Edna Viola Kersten were held Monday, Jan. 27, 1992 at Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mt. Ayr with Rev. Scott Marcum officiating. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa. Edna Viola Smith Reitter Kersten, daughter of John and Belle Stephenson Smith, was born March 13, 1906 in Denver, Mo. and passed away January 25,1992 at the Clearview Home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. On June 20, 1921 she was united in marriage to Michael John Reitter. One daughter, Deloris, was born to this union. Mike passed away July 14, 1934. In later years she was united in marriage to George Kersten, who also preceded her in death. Edna worked at various nursing homes and hospitals as an LPN. She also was proud to be a foster grandparent at the school in Glenwood, Iowa. In later years as her health failed she came to the housing in Blockton, Iowa and then later moved to the Clearview Home in Mt. Ayr until her death. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Deloris and husband Orlin Henson of Blockton, Iowa; two grandsons, Steve Henson and wife Neila of Perry, Iowa and Craig Henson of Ames, Iowa; three great-grandsons, Marc Morhaus of Creston, Iowa; and Brett and Cory Henson of Perry, Iowa; one sister, Cora Nolan of San Jose, Calif.; and a friend who was like a daughter to her, Marie Campbell of Blockton, Iowa. EDNA KEY
Funeral services for Edna Key, age 93 of Blockton, who died Saturday, July 10, 2004 at Clearview Nursing Home were held Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Marcum officiating. Interment was held in the Rosehill Cemetery in Blockton. Memorials can be given in Edna's name. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford. Edna Mary Key began her life journey on February 19, 1911 at Worth County, Missouri as the daughter of Enoch and Minnie Tucker Weese and entered into her eternal rest at Mt. Ayr, Iowa on July 10, 2004 at the age of ninety-three years, four months and twenty one days. She was of ten children. Edna was reared in Missouri until she was thirteen years of age. On December 22, 1930 she was united in marriage to Loyed Amond [Aymond] Key at Lenox, Iowa. This union was blessed with the birth of eight sons and two daughters. Times were hard during the Great Depression and dry years of 1934 and 1936. It was a necessity to raise a large garden and can the produce and fruit in half gallons and quarts by the hundreds in order to have enough to get through the winter each year. Washing was done on the board and later with a gas powered Speed Queen wringer washer. Clothes were dried outside if possible; otherwise lines were strung in the house for drying. Edna took in washing and ironing and cleaned houses to supplement the family income. She saw penicillin come into use in World War II and the threat of infection and pneumonia eliminated. She witnessed the country go from mud roads and horse drawn buggies to a man on the moon and computers. Edna belonged to a former quilting club in Blockton. She made and gave away many quilts, lap throws and baby blankets in later years. She also enjoyed rug making. Edna worked at the Blockton Locker for about thirteen years. She loved to play Bingo, do crossword puzzles and play cards. Left to cherish Edna's memory are seven sons, Donald and wife Beulah Key of Columbus, Ohio; Marvin Loyed and wife Beverly Key of Raymond, Iowa; Louis Edward and wife Bonnie Key of Blockton, Iowa; Vern Leroy and wife Beverly Key of Stover, Missouri; Jerry Lee and wife Kathleen Key of Blockton, Iowa; Albert Gene and wife Patricia Key of Lenox, Iowa; Harold Ray and wife Sheila of Wilbur, Washington; a daughter; Rose Emma and husband Ora Owens of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Madelyn and husband Dale Loghry of Osceola, Iowa; forty one grandchildren; seventy great grandchildren and thirteen great great grandchildren. Funeral services for Loyed Aymond Key were held Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1991 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Iowa. Loyed Aymond Key, son of Sarah Ellen Coe Key and Achelas Shedrack Key was born near Sharpsburg, Iowa November 19, 1903 and departed this life August 3, 1991 at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center at the age of 87 years, eight months and 14 days. He grew to maturity in the community where he was born where he attended the public school On December 22, 1930 he was united in marriage to Edna M. [ary] Weese at the home of Robert Graham near Sheridan, Mo. They moved to Taylor County near Lenox, Iowa. To this union 10 children were born, eight boys and two girls. He engaged in farming for self and others during his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Minnie Ellen Freemyer and four grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers. George Swan and Rev. Lawrence Day officiating. Mr. King died November 9 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston. He had been hospitalized October 29 following an automobile accident. Military honors were given by Blockton American Legion Post No. 443 with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton. Included among Mr. King’s survivors are his wife and a son, Albert. [Lang, Amy Ridge Brown Lauver] Bedford Times-Press Thursday September 29, 1960 p. 6 Mrs. Amy Lang Dies At Marshalltown Mrs. Amy (Ridge) Lang, 76, a former resident of Blockton, died unexpectedly on Thursday, September first at the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, where she had lived the past 28 years. Funeral services wee held at the Christian church in Blockton, Sunday, September 4 and burial was in Rose Hill cemetery there. Mrs. Lang was the oldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Ridge of Blockton. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Anna Piatt of Darlington, Mo. There are also two half-sisters and two half-brothers. Mr. and Mrs. Carl DeVault of Blockton, cousins of the deceased, took the sister, Mrs. Piatt, to Marshalltown after Mrs. Lang’s death to make the necessary funeral arrangements. Ben Lantz died at his home in Sheridan Saturday, following a stroke suffered on Friday of the week before. He was 75 years of age. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton, on Monday afternoon. The services at the grave were conducted by the Masonic order. Benjamin McClellan Lantz, son of John [William] and Susan [White] Lantz was born Aug. 2, 1864, in Greene County, Pa., and died at his home in Sheridan, Mo., Feb. 3, 1940, aged 75 years, 6 months and 1 day. The family moved to Iowa, this county, in 1866, and to Worth County in 1872. On Dec. 20, 1885, he was married to Mary Virginia Barrett. Eight children came to bless this union. Three sons, Floyd [William], Don [Benjamin] and [George] Leo died in early childhood. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Elva E. [dna] Hibbs, Sheridan; Mrs. Mamie E. Dawson, Bedford, and Mrs. Susie C. Bownes, Athelstan; two sons, Guy H. [ull] Lantz, Blockton, and Lester L. Lester L. [eonidas] Lantz, 69-year-old retired postmaster of Sheridan, died Jan. 7 in a hospital at Kansas City. A lifelong resident of the Sheridan area, he was a veteran of World War II. Surviving is his wife, Eula M. Lantz, of the home, and a sister, Elva Edna Hibbs, Sheridan. Services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. at the Prugh-Dunfee Chapel, Grant City. The Rev. Phyllis Lynette Lepley was born July 26th, 1922 near Maloy and passed away July 19, 1938, at the Hospital in Iowa City, at the age of 15 yrs. 11 mo. and 24 days. During her short illness of nine days duration, all that medical skill and loving hands could do was done for her but God saw fit to take her home. She was the second child of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lepley. Lynette attended both rural and town schools at Clearfield and was a member of the Maloy Consolidated School at the time of her death, where she would have been a member of the senior class the coming year. She took great pride in all school work both classes and extracurricular. Lynette was a faithful attendant at Sunday school and Church services. She gave her heart to Jesus at the age of nine and became a member of the Methodist Church at Clearfield, later transferring her membership to the Blockton M. E. church. With her happy smile and unselfish disposition, Lynette made a place for herself in the hearts of everyone, both young and old. Altho her suffering was almost unbearable she appreciated everything that was done for her and greeted everyone, including the nurses and doctors, with a smile. Besides her loving parents she leaves to mourn her loss, her sister Maurine and brother Kenneth, one grandmother Mrs. Pearl Bowen of Blockton, one grandfather J. [ohn] J. [ulius] Lepley of Maloy; one uncle, five aunts, eight cousins and hosts of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in Blockton Methodist Church on Friday afternoon July 22nd with a large attendance. Services were conducted by Rev. Warrior and the Blockton quartet furnished one song. The other music was furnished by the four Swan sisters of Clearfield. The flower girls were her chum and four girl cousins, and the pallbearers were boy schoolmates. Interment was in the cemetery at Blockton. [Vanskyock, Susanna White Lantz] Bedford Free Press Thursday June 24, 1926 p. 5 Obituary – Mrs. Susanna Van Skyock Susanna[a] White was born in Morgantown, Monongahela County, West Virginia, July 3, 1842, and passed away June 15, 1926, at the home of her son, Jonathan Van Skyock in Athelstan, aged 83 years, 11 months and 12 days. In November 1863 she was united in marriage to John Lantz in Green[e] County, Penn., and to this union were born nine children, one of whom, a son Joseph, died in infancy. In 1866 Mr. Lantz moved with his family to Taylor County, Iowa, and later to north Missouri where he died May 8, 1892 [1882]. On November 10, 1893, Mrs. Lantz was united in marriage to Washington Vanskyock at Isadora, Mo. To this union one child was born. On November 16, 1911 Mr. Vanskyock died at his home near Athelstan. When but a small child Mrs. Vanskyock united with the Methodist church in Pennsylvania. Later she became one of the first members of the Holiness Church, organized at Athelstan more than 30 years ago. She is survived by the following children: B. [enjamin] M. [cClellan] Lantz, Sheridan, Mo.; Mrs. J.M. Ostrander, Hastings, Iowa; Mrs. W. E. Ewart, Bedford, Iowa; W. W. Lantz, St. Joseph, Mo.; J. M. Lantz, Iola, Kansas; W. [alter] H. [ull] Lantz, Blockton, Iowa; Mrs. Lucy Cordell, Maryville, Mo.; Mrs. Harley Scott, Athelstan, Io.; Jonathan Vanskyock, Athelstan, also by two brothers, David White of Athelstan and Madison White of Morgantown West Virginia; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Thomas, Mrs. Emaline Shafer and Mrs. Tillie Durr, all of Morgantown, West Virginia; besides 35 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. The funeral services were held at the Holiness church, June 15,
by Rev. Wm. Hunt, and interment given in the Isadora cemetery. |
