Death of Mrs. Baldwin

Mrs. Mary Baldwin, wife of G. [ranville] R. Baldwin, of Bedford, died at the hospital at Maryville this morning at 7:30. The body will arrive on the late train today, and the funeral will probably be held Saturday, although at the present time no definite arrangements have [been] made.

Mrs. Baldwin had been afflicted with a tumor of the breast for many months and at last an operation became imperative. This operation was performed yesterday, but weakened as she was, the shock was too great, and she passed away a few hours later.

A Home Bereft

Mrs. Mary Baldwin died at the hospital at Maryville, Mo., at 7:35 a. m. on Thursday, November 21st, age 57 years, 10 months and 7 days. The body was shipped to Bedford, and the funeral services were held at the home on Saturday at 10:30 a. m., conducted by Rev. Henry. Interment at Fairview.

Mary Moon was born on January 14, 1850, at Elkston [Ilkerston], Derbyshire, England, and that was her home until she was 16 years of age. In 1866, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Moon, decided to leave England and make their home in America, and Mary, together with her brothers and sisters, accompanied them. Unlike a great many immigrants who come to this country, Mr. and Mrs. Moon did not stop near the sea coast but pushed on westward until they reached Sandwich, Illinois, where they made their home for six years.

In 1872 Mr. Moon with his family moved to Taylor County and settled near Conway. It was while her parents lived there that Miss Mary decided to visit old friends at Sandwich, Illinois and during that visit she met G. [ranville] R. Baldwin, to whom she gave her heart and hand, and with whom she lived happily until the day of her death. The marriage occurred on March 25, 1878, and for five years thereafter the newly wedded pair resided on the old home place of the Baldwin family near Sandwich. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin moved to Taylor County and settled on the farm just north of Bedford. They lived there until 1902, when the dread disease which eventually caused Mrs Baldwin's death begun to manifest itself, and she and her husband decided to move to town where she might take life more easily. It was thought that by skillful medical care and rest Mrs. Baldwin might recover her failing health, but the hope was vain. Her decline was slow, but only too sure, and though tender, loving care long postponed the inevitable end, it came at last.

No children ever came to bless the home of Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin, and she lavished all the love of her heart upon her husband and home. Of a retiring nature, this disposition was accentuated by her ill health, so that Mrs. Baldwin mixed but little in society and her circle of acquaintances was not large. But to those who knew her she was a true friend and an agreeable companion. The comfort of her husband, the welfare of her home were to her the essentials of a contented life. Her sphere was not large, but within it she was all a true woman should be---loving, self-sacrificing and womanly.

The parents of Mrs. Baldwin have been dead some years, her father dying in 1896, her mother in 1904. The surviving brothers and sisters are William Moon, Mr. M. Mincks, Mrs. R. McClure and Mrs. Dowlin, all of whom reside in this county, and were present at the obsequies.

Obituary

Mrs. Mary Baldwin was born in Ilkerston, Derbyshire, England, January 14, 1850, and died at the hospital at Maryville, Mo., Thursday morning, November 21, 1907.

At the age of 16 years she came to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Moon, and settled at Sandwich, Ill., where they lived for 6 years. They then moved to Taylor County, locating on a farm near Conway. It was while living there that the subject of this sketch returned to Sandwich for a visit, and it was there that she met Mr. G. [ranville] R. Baldwin. The acquaintance thus formed soon ripened into love that terminated in their marriage on March 25, 1878. They immediately commenced housekeeping on a farm belonging to Mr. Baldwin, near Sandwich, where they remained until the spring of 1883; they then moved to Taylor County, Mr. Baldwin purchasing what was known as the old Bank farm north of town. There they remained, living a happy and quiet life, until in 1902, failing health of Mrs. Baldwin compelled them to sell out, and they then moved to Bedford, buying the Dorn residence, which has since been their home.

For the past few years, Mrs. Baldwin has been suffering from a tumor in the stomach. Getting no medical relief she decided on the more heroic treatment of the surgeon. Accordingly on November 12, she went to Maryville and entered the hospital and on the 18th underwent the operation for the removal of the tumor, confident all the time that it meant relief from her intense suffering and a speedy recovery. This was not to be, however, and on the morning of the 21st she passed quietly away. Her husband was with her at the hospital.

The deceased was a woman of many noble traits. She was a kind and loving wife and helpmeet and a fond sister. When in health she was a regular attendant at the Presbyterian Church, and was held in high esteem by all who knew her.

The remains were brought here Thursday noon and taken to the late home, and on Saturday forenoon at 10:30, the funeral was held there, conducted by Rev. S. E. Henry and interment was in Fairview cemetery.

She leaves a heartbroken husband and one brother, Wm. Moon, and three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Mincks, Mrs. Mattie McClure and Mrs. Sarah Dowlin, to mourn her death. The brother and sisters all reside near Blockton and were in attendance at the funeral. Frank Baldwin and Mrs. May Wyckoff, of York, Neb, brother and sister of Mr. G. R. Baldwin, were also here. The bereaved have the sympathy of all in their hour of sorrow.

[MURPHY, FLAVEL BENJAMIN "JAY", III]

Bedford Times-Press, Wednesday, November 26, 2003

JAY MURPHY

Funeral services for Jay Murphy, age 40 of Bedford, who died Wednesday, November 19, 2003, were held Monday, November 24, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Thompson officiating. Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be given in Jay's name. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Flavel (Jay) Benjamin Murphy III was born November    9, 1963    in Maryville, Missouri the son of Flavel (Ben) Benjamin Murphy, Jr., and Barbara Jean King Murphy. Jay grew up in the Bedford area and spent all of his adult life here. Jay's mother tragically passed away when he was five years old. Due to these circumstances, he and his younger brother were raised by their grandparents, Flavel and Mary Beth Murphy. He graduated from Bedford High School with the Class of 1982. After graduation, Jay farmed and on November 29, 1985, he married his best friend, Jeannie Whitten. The two began their lives together on a farm southeast of Bedford where Jay worked as a farm hand for Ken Jennett. Jay then spent many hours working on the farms of Jack Wackernagle and Paul Jones.

In 1991, Jay began working for Lyndell Streebin and did so for eight years.

This was the beginning of a relationship that would grow into something so meaningful and cherished that Jay considered Carol and Lyndell second parents. They spent many hours talking and becoming a family.

In January of 1999, he started his career of working for Taylor County on the bridge crew. He then moved on to run the maintainer out of Sharpsburg. Then in April of 2003, he started driving a truck, hauling rock. He also worked for Paul and Nancy Ackley. He somehow found the time to help on the Sharpsburg Fire Department as Assistant Fire Chief.

Jay loved to farm and that is where he found the most comfort. He worked so hard and often did so much for little or nothing. He was such a hard worker, more than dependable and one of the most trustworthy men around. No one questioned what he could do.

Jay was a man who would do anything for anyone without question or a single complaint. He had a way about him that drew people to him. His true passion was his family. Jay worshiped the ground Jeannie walked on and truly believed in the love they shared. The unconditional love he had for his children was so visible. He enjoyed spending time with Missy, more often referred to as "Shorty"; teaching her how to break her two horses. Jay was always there to help Ben when his three-wheeler was not running just right and he spent many hours pushing April in her swing and trying to keep up with her endless energy. It was evident that his family was his focus in life. He would have given anything for them.

Left to cherish Jay's memory is his soul mate and life partner, Jeannie; oldest daughter, Missy; son Ben; and youngest daughter, April, all of Bedford; grandmother Mary Beth Murphy of Bedford and grandmother Arlene King of New Market; brother Billy Murphy and wife Becky of North Carolina; sisters, Ginny Coats and husband George, and son Jake of Omaha; and Jackie Smith and daughters, Shelly, Jennifer and Lindsay of Bedford; brothers-in-law, Jim Whitten and wife Cinda and their children Kayla, Michael and Evan of Winterset; Jason Whitten and wife Erin and their daughter Jaci of Runnells; Todd Fisher and wife Johanna and their children Bryce, Brandon and Brenna of Altoona; Matt Murphy and mother-in-law, Linda Murphy also of Altoona; along with a host of family and friends.

Preceding Jay in death are his mother Barbara Jean Murphy and father Flavel Benjamin Murphy, Jr.; and his grandfathers, Flavel Benjamin Murphy and Ross King.

[ROBINSON, NANCY LYNNE]

Clarinda Herald Journal, July 18, 2001

Nancy Robinson

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 14, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. for Nancy Robinson, seven-year old daughter of Robert and Julie Robinson of Bedford, who died Wednesday, July 11, 2001 after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. Services were held at the Bedford High School gymnasium with Pastor Loren Daly officiating. Interment was held at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. In lieu of flowers the family strongly desires memorial contributions be directed to the Iowa Make-A-Wish Foundation or the Carolyn Scott Rainbow House. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Nancy Lynne Robinson, the twin daughter of Robert and Julie Robinson was born January 7, 1994 in Omaha, Nebraska. Nancy grew up on the family farm near Siam with her older sister Emily and twin sister, Tracy. She attended the Bedford Elementary School through the first grade and both church and Sunday school at the Siam Church of Christ.

Nancy's family learned many things during her short life. Her motto seemed to be "Just because I have pains, doesn't mean I have to be one." She never complained about pain, having to take medication that would make her sick, getting blood drawn or shots. Nancy just seemed to accept these things as part of her life. "So let's do it and get it done", she'd say. In fact, she wanted to watch what was being done to her including the injections. In all she was going through, she was still able to notice the beautiful sky, or the sunshine. She enjoyed picking dandelions and white clover flowers.

Nancy was almost always happy and you could always find a smile on her face. It was easy to get her bubbly laughter going and it seemed to come from her toes. She was more concerned about taking care of others than dwelling on herself. She was known to tell her mom to go take a nap and that she (Nancy) would take one later, She often told family members they needed to eat, even when she wasn't eating well. And she has also reminded us when we had just done something that we had told her not to do. She liked to be organized, if you take your coat off, put it away. When we get home from the grocery store, put the groceries away. She was good at putting puzzles together . . . even without looking at the picture on the box!

Nancy didn't have a lot to say, especially to strangers, however, her eyes spoke for her. She had a personality that attracted people to her. Nurses in Omaha would come to meet the child they had heard so much about. They never forgot her, even when many of them hadn't seen her for over a year. They remembered the child who, even when she was sick, folded her toilet paper in the middle of the night! Nancy loved listening to country music. Even while sick in the bathroom at home, she was dancing because she liked the song. Even feeling nauseous didn't stop her from enjoying music.

Nancy had a special way of getting into people's hearts in just a short time. Always happy, she was able to brighten up anyone's day with her winning smile and bubbly laughter. She was a very caring person who was more concerned with others than herself. She loved being active, even if that was only doing puzzles, coloring or doing her school work. She would rather be doing something with her hands and mind than sitting in front of the TV. Perhaps the school kids summed her up best when they said she was "the strongest person they ever met".

Nancy is survived by her parents Robert and Julie Robinson and sisters Emily and twin, Tracy Robinson all of Bedford; maternal grandparents George and Martha McNees of Clarinda; paternal grandparents, Bill and Janice Robinson of Bedford; and maternal great-grandmother Ethel McNees Wright of Clarinda.

Preceding Nancy in death are her maternal great-grandparents Paul and Irene Leonard.
