Death of Mrs. Schuyler Kling

Mrs. Schuyler Kling died March 8, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.[ohn] B. Thompson, near Bedford, surrounded by her husband, children, brothers and sisters.

Flora E. was born in Sullivan County, Indiana, on the 3rd day of September 1877 and was at the time of her death 29 years, 6 months and 5 days old. She was married to Schuyler [Ulysses] Kling in 1894 at Stanberry, Mo. To this union were born four children; two of them, Teddy and Paul, are living. She is also survived by her father and mother, husband, three brothers and four sisters, and a host of friends who will mourn her death. She was a kind and patient woman, always putting her own comforts aside in consideration of others during her long and painful illness of tuberculosis of the hip.

The funeral was conducted at the Platteville church by Rev. R. Knoll, and the remains were laid to rest in the Platteville cemetery.

Funeral services for Claude LaVern Matheny were held Wednesday, August 31, at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Dena Woldruff officiating.

Music was provided by Norma Paymal, Billie Jean Barker and Marilyn Beck. Casket bearers were Charles, Mike and Chad Matheny, Dave Snedeker, Eric Shimer and Kevin Shaw. Interment was in Platteville Cemetery, Platteville.

Claude LaVern Matheny, son of Josiah Harrison and Ruth Alma Reeves Matheny, was born May 14, 1909 at Platteville, Iowa. He died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 28, at Mercy Hospital in Corning. He was 85 years old.

He grew up in the Platteville area and attended Platteville schools. On June 23, 1933, he was married to Crystal [Dorothy[ Evans in Maryville, Mo. They had six children.

Claude and Crystal lived the past 50 years in Lenox, where he worked as a mechanic for Barker Implement and later for Bowman Garage in Clearfield. They were active members of the Union Squares and attended southwest Iowa square dances until Crystal broke her hip a year ago.

Claude is survived by his wife, Crystal of Lenox; children Eldon and wife Ruth of Lenox, Harry and wife Sandie of Edwardsville, Kansas, Gail and wife Mary of Lenox, Leonard and wife Melinda of Bedford, Betty Shimer and husband Dell of Creston; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; sister Mary Straight of Clearfield, and many nieces and nephews.

Claude was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Joe, Jim, Paul, Wilbur and John; two sisters, Ruby Smith and Amy Stewart, daughter Louise at age 2 1/2; and grandson Chester LaVern Matheny.

Obituary

Dorothy Louise Matheny, daughter of Claude and Crystal Evans Matheny, was born near Blockton April 6, 1939, and died at the home Oct. 11, 1941, at the age of 2 years, 6 months and 5 days. She leaves to mourn their loss her father, mother, one brother, Eldon grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Matheny and Mrs. Anna Evans, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who dearly loved her. She will be greatly missed by all.

Services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Platteville church, conducted by Rev. Stewart, and burial in the Platteville cemetery. Rev. and Mrs. Stewart sang. Pallbearers were Earl Matheny, Arlo Stewart, Paul Peterman and Leo Evans.

Dorothy Louise, daughter of Claude and Crystal [Evans] Matheny, was born near Blockton, Iowa April [6], 1939 and died at the home on October 11, 1941 at the age of two years, six months and five days.

She leaves to mourn their loss her father, mother and a brother, Eldon; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Matheny of Platteville and her grandmother, Mrs. Anna Stevens of Blockton, together with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, all of whom dearly loved her.

Funeral services were Sunday afternoon, October 12 at two o’clock at Platteville conducted by the Rev. E. B. Stewart of the Blockton Methodist church.

Obituary - Fernata Matheny

Fernata Margaret Tamerius was born October 19, 1902 near Blockton, and died at her home near Sheridan. Mo. August 15, 1946. She was the youngest of a family of eight children, being 43 years, 10 months and 27 days old at the time of her death. Her father, mother and three brothers preceded her in death.

She was married to Paul Matheny in 1920 and they lived in Taylor County until the spring of 1945, when they moved to a farm near Sheridan.

To them six children were born: Mrs. Mardell Straight of Sheridan, Mrs. Deloris Sanders and Mrs. Isabel Link of Clarinda, Paul, Jr., who is serving in the armed forces, Delbert and Ronald of the farm.

Besides her husband and children, she leaves 5 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Hazel Matheny of Bedford; three brothers, Roy Tamerius of Conway, Hoyt Tamerius of Belleville, Kansas, and Woody Tamerius of Athelstan.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 18 at Platteville, by Rev. Ted Masters of Grant City. Burial was in the Platteville cemetery.

Jay Sidney Matheny

Jay Sidney Matheny, the son of   Paul   and   Bernice   Yocum Matheny was born November 26, 1960     in    North     Hollywood, California.

Jay lived in the Clearfield area and attended the Clearfield Community Schools graduating in 1979. He also attended Stewarts School of Cosmetology for one year. Jay lived in the Des Moines area for the past 10 years where he was employed by United Parcel Service. Jay loved his Harley. He was a member of ABATE-A Harley Davidson Club; he regularly attended Sturgis and participated in many Toy Runs, which benefited Toys for Tots. There was always a special bond between Jay and his nieces and nephews. The children will always remember Jay as "being fun".

He is survived by his parents, Paul and Bernice Matheny of Bedford; a step daughter, Toni Straight and her children, McKenzie and Cody (Jay's grandchildren) of Des Moines four brothers, Mike and wife Kathy Crosier of LaMoore, California; Joel Matheny and Marcia Kolecki of Westminster, Colorado; James and wife Sheila Matheny of Bedford; and Jeffrey Matheny and Patty Wegner of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sisters, Patricia and husband John Orendoff of Henderson, Colorado and Jerolyn and husband Mike Weese of Council Bluffs; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Jay is preceded in death by one brother, Randy Matheny.

Graveside services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford, Monday, August 11, 1997 at 11:00 a.m. Burial was in the Platteville Cemetery.

Paul Matheny, 69 Rites October 10

Funeral services for Paul Collins Matheny, 69, lifetime resident of Taylor County, were held October 10 at the Clearfield Methodist Church conducted by Rev. E. S. Tschetter. Mr. Matheny died October 7, 1968 in Emanual Hospital in Omaha, Nebr. while visiting two of his sons, Delbert and Ronald Matheny. Interment was at Platteville Cemetery.

Paul Collins Matheny, one of nine children of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Matheny, was born Aug. 14, 1899 in Taylor County, Iowa. He was a member of the Blockton Methodist Church.

On Oct. 28, 1920 he was united in marriage to [Fernata] Margaret Tamerius who preceded him in death in 1946.  To this union were born three daughters: Mrs. Mardell Straight and Mrs. Isabelle Link of La Mirada, California, and Deloris Sanders of Maryville, Mo.; three sons, Paul Matheny Jr. of Clearfield, Ia.; Delbert and Ronald Matheny of Carter Lake, Iowa.

In later years he married Mrs. Fernata Tamerius who is now in a Sanitarium in Oakdale. Iowa.

Mr. Matheny was preceded in death by his father, one sister, Mrs. Clark Smith, three brothers, James, John and Wilbur and one grandson Randy Matheny.

Left to cherish his memory are his six children; mother, Mrs. Ruth Matheny; 26 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Straight, Bedford, and Mrs. Alfred Stewart of Blockton; two brothers, Joe Matheny of Blockton, Iowa and Claude Matheny of Lenox, Iowa; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Following is a poem written by his daughter, Isabelle, which expresses the children’s' feelings for their father. What Our Father Means To Us. He means a head of silvery white. The teaching of what's wrong and right. His understanding true and kind we could search the world over and never find. A dad to equal all his traits, God made but one man so great. Our dad's the best, We're lucky that he picked us his children for to be.

PAUL MATHENY

Paul Collins Matheny, one of nine children of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Matheny was born August 14, 1899 in Taylor County, Iowa and passed away, October 7, 1968 in the Emanual Hospital at Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 69 years, 1 month and 24 days.

He passed away while visiting with two of his sons, Delbert and Ronald Matheny.

He spent his entire life in the Taylor County area.

On October 28th, 1920, he was united in marriage to Fernata Margaret Tamerious, who preceeded him in death in 1946.

To this union was born three daughters, Mrs. Mardell Straight and Mrs. Isabelle Link of California and Delores Sanders of Maryville, Missouri, also three sons, Paul J. Matheny of Clearfield, Iowa, and Delbert and Ronald Matheny of Carter Lake, Iowa, two daughter's-in-law, Pat and Bernice Matheny and one son-in-law, Nobel Straight.

Mr. Matheny was preceeded in death by his father and one sister, Mrs. Clark Smith and three brothers, John, Wilbur and James.

Left to cherish his memory is his mother, Mrs. Ruth Matheny, his children, 26 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, two sisters, Amy Stewart of Blockton and Mary Straight of Bedford; two brothers, Joe Matheny of Blockton and Claude Matheny of Lenox, and several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Mr. Matheny was a member of the Blockton United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Athelstan Cemetery.

Ruth Matheny, 100 Final Rites Held February 18

Funeral services for Mrs. Josiah (Ruth) Matheny, 100 years old, of Clearfield, formerly of Platteville and Blockton, were held February 18 in the Blockton Methodist Church officiated by Rev. G. W. Swan and Rev. Milton Henderson. Mrs. Matheny died February 14, 1976 in Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr following a short illness. Interment was at Platteville Cemetery near Blockton.

Ruth Alma Matheny was born Sept. 15, 1875 in Indiana. She was the daughter of James and Isabelle Alkire Reeves.

When she was 14 months old her parents moved to Iowa and lived in New Market. They then moved to Bedford where Ruth attended school. Shortly after her family moved to Platteville, she was married to Josiah Harrison Matheny Dec. 17,1891 at the home of her parents.

To this union six sons and three daughters were born. After her husband died June 6, 1951, she lived with her son, Joe, on a farm northwest of Blockton. They moved to the town of Blockton in 1955 where they lived until two years ago when they went to Clearfield to reside at Clearview Nursing Home.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Josiah, and seven children, Joseph, Wilbur, James, Paul, Ruby, Amy and John and four grandchildren.

Surviving are her son, Claude, and his wife, Crystal, of Lenox; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Straight, of Clearfield; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Miller of Mount Ayr and Mrs. Mattie Million of Bedford; a son-in-law, Alfred Stewart of Blockton; and a sister, Amy Mulnix, of South Gate, Calif; 41 grandchildren; 121 great grandchildren and 80 great, great grandchildren.

She joined the Platteville Methodist Church as a youth and later transferred her membership to the Blockton Church where she was active as long as health permitted.

One of her greatest thrills was when her family and friends joined her for the observance of her 100th birthday anniversary Sept. 15, 1975 at Clearfield Lions Hall. She was happiest when she was visiting with her own family and her many friends. She always thought first of others and was willing to lend them a helping hand.

The many who affectionately called her “Grandmother Matheny" will greatly miss her.

HAROLD GORDON COX

Funeral services for Harold Gordon Cox, 57, of New Market, were held March 3 In Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Mr. Cox died February 29, 1984 at Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Ne. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Harold Gordon Cox, son of John Gilbert Cox and Lola Karene Fry Cox, was born near Gravity in Taylor County, Iowa, January 20, 1927.

He grew to maturity in Taylor County where he attended the rural school and Bedford High School.

On January 12, 1950 he was united in marriage to Dolores Gilbert at Clarinda, Iowa and with the exception of four years they lived in Grygla, Mn, they have resided on the farm in Taylor County.

Three children were born to them: one son Neal and two daughters Audrey and Lorraine.

Gordon was a farmer by occupation and he enjoyed the out of doors, especially fishing, hunting and trapping.

Mr. Cox served his country during World War II and was in the Army of Occupation in Germany. He was discharged December 17, 1946.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother Willis; a sister, Mildred Kapple, and a granddaughter, Sarah Larinda Cox.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Dolores of the home; the three children: Neal Harold Cox and his wife Samm, Audrey Elaine and her husband Norman Hausen and Lorraine Gail Madsen; grandchildren: Brian Harold, Darrell Laurence, and Rachel Melinda Cox, Erin Alexander Madsen, Amy Catherine Whipple, Heather Suzanne Hausen; step grandchildren: Allyson, Amy, Amanda, Alissa and Abby Hausen; three brothers: Ralph, Wayne and Howard Cox and one sister, Edna Ruth Pruitt; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. His grandchildren were one of the greatest joys of his life.

His family and friends will remember him as a kind person and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Gordon Harold [Harold Gordon] Cox, 57, of rural New Market died Feb. 29 at Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha, Ne.

Cox was born on Jan. 20, 1927, a son of John Gilbert Cox and Lola Karene Frye.

Simeon E. Lasley, a long-time resident of the Blockton community, passed away Monday, November 30 at the age of 71 years, eight months, five days.

Simeon E. Lasley, son of Eugene and Lydia [Ann Hamm] Lasley, was born at Shambaugh, Iowa, March 25, 1888 and died November 30, 1959 in Blockton at the age of 70 years, eight months, five days.

He was one of a family of ten brothers and sisters, of whom three brothers and three sisters survive him. Preceding him in death were two sisters, Rosie and Daisy, and one brother Charley.

On February 19, 1908 he was married to Hazel [Vinita] Halstead. To this union five children were born. One son Erwin and his wife Hazel preceded him in death.

On August 1, 1939 he married Mary Weaver Springs. Most of their married life was spent in Blockton.

He was a member of the Blockton Christian church.

He is survived by his wife Mary; three brothers, Harlan Lasley of Hopkins, Roland Lasley of Red Oak, Clarence Lasley of Clarinda; three sisters, Nevada Baker of St. Joseph, Belle Davison of Hopkins, Jessie Fine of Braddyville; four children: Dale Lasley of Red Oak, Erma Tritt of New York, Beatrice Edan of San Diego, Calif., Jerry Lasley of Sheridan; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Shum and Novinger Funeral Home at 708 State Street conducted by Rev. Lowell Hall of the Christian Church of Blockton. Burial in Blockton cemetery.

Last Rites Held In Bedford For Fay L. Shafar, 97

Funeral services for Fay L. [eslie] Shafar were held Friday, June 22, at 8:00 p.m. at the Martin-Bails Funeral Home, Emmetsburg, Ia., with Rev. Lawrence Johnson officiating. Mrs. Lawrence Johnson played the organ and accompanied Mrs. James Schmidt. Mr. Shafar died in Palo Alto County Hospital June 21, 1979.

Funeral Services were also held Saturday, June 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Christian Presbyterian Church at Bedford, Ia. Rev Mel Smith officiated. Mildred Stacy played the organ and accompanied Robert Dalton. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Ia. Grandson [s] were pall bearers.

Fay L. [eslie] Shafar, son of [James] Andrew Shafar and Frances Ellen Ritter Shafar, was born June 6, 1882 in Warren County, Iowa.

He was married to Naomi Hedrick March 9, 1918 from Warren County; then moved to Bedford in 1943 and back to Emmetsburg in 1972.

Mr. Shafar was preceded in death by his wife, January 18, 1970, one son, Richard, one daughter, Leola and a sister, Grace.

He is survived by ten children: George, Armstrong, Ia., Bob, Travares, Fla., Roy, Port Richey, Fla., Mildred, Hill City, South Dakota, Frances, Des Moines, Ia., Bette, Emmetsburg, Ia., Mary Leesburg, Fla., Hazle, Laguna Hills, Calif., Ina Lou, Bedford, Ia., and Ned, Newton, Kansas: 48 grandchildren; 91 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren.

E. E. Streitenberger Last Rites Held

Funeral services for Everett Eugene Streitenberger, 19, of Bedford were held June 14 at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with Rev. Dwayne Madsen officiating. Streitenberger was killed in a drowning accident in Washington Township, Taylor County, Iowa, on June 11, 1979. Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton, Ia.

Everett Eugene, son of Boyd Everett and Edna Mae Irvin Streitenberger, was born at Mt. Ayr, Iowa on January 8, 1960. He grew to maturity in Bedford, where he was graduated from the Bedford Community Schools in 1978.

He was employed as a farm worker on the Dale Wagner farm near Gravity.

Everett was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Jean, in 1966.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Boyd and Edna Streitenberger; three sisters, Evelyn Streitenberger, Priscilla Rusco and Sharon Streitenberger.

He was a kind and considerate son, brother and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
