Services for Orham Daryl Hawn, 47, Bedford were held April 27 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Shultz officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Mr. Hawn died April 24, 1989 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

Orham Daryl Hawn, son of Orham Dow and Helene M. Hawn was born at Conway, Iowa August 24, 1941. He grew to maturity in Conway, Iowa, where he attended the public school and the Methodist Church.

On August 20, 1965 he was united in marriage to Nancy Jo Mensching at Hope Lutheran Church m Maryville, Mo. and they made their home in Bedford, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Tracy Faith and Christina Hope.

Daryl worked as a car mechanic for much of his life, most recently employed at Sweeney Repair in Lenox, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helene, and one brother, Herman.

Left to cherish his memory are his father, O.[rham] D. [ow] Hawn; wife, Nancy Jo, two daughters, Tracy Faith and Christina Hope; brothers Norman, Lowell, Merlyn and Rex Hawn and his sister, Alice Polston.

Daryl enjoyed life, enjoyed his work and enjoyed his play. We will miss how he helped us enjoy life as well.

ORHAM D. HAWN

Funeral services for Orham D. Hawn, 92, were held January 18, 1991 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa.

Orham Dow Hawn, son of John Hawn and Magnolia Hickman Hawn was born at Chapin, Illinois September 7, 1898 and departed this life January 15, 1991 at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, four months and eight days.

He moved with his family to Taylor County, Iowa when he was a small lad. They lived northeast of Bedford and he attended the rural "Hess" school. This schoolhouse is now a part of the Taylor County Museum, and it is restored as it was when being used as a part of the Taylor County rural school system.

On April 20, 1921 he was united in marriage to Helene Neville at Bedford, Iowa and they made their home in Gravity, Iowa where he was employed in a grocery store. Later they farmed in rural Taylor County and he worked on the Burlington Railroad and for over 20 years he carried the mail from the Conway Depot to the Conway Post Office. He retired from the farm in 1964, and they moved to Bedford where he has continued to reside and until recently due to failing health he had resided at Bedford Manor.

To this union seven children were born: Alice, Herman, Lowell, Rex, Norman, Merlyn and Darrell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and one brother; he was the last member of his family; his wife Helene who died November 1988; two sons, Herman who was killed in World War II and Darrell who died in 1989.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Alice, Lowell, Rex, Norman, Merlyn and their families and grandchildren; great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; a niece Lucille Largent of Jane, Mo.; other relatives and friends.

His family and friends will long remember him as a kind person, one who cared and loved his family; his friends and neighbors and he will be sadly missed by one and all.

Funeral services for Ralph Donald Hensley, 61, lifetime Taylor County resident, were held February 16 at the east Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here. Hensley died at his farm home east of Bedford February 14, 1968. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Ralph Donald Hensley, son of Tillman Howard and Ella Spencer Hensley, was born April 1, 1906 in Ross township, Taylor County, Iowa.

He grew to manhood in the farm community where he was born and had followed the occupation as a farmer for his life’s work living in Taylor County Iowa all of his life.

On October 27, 1928 he was united in marriage to Helen Henning of Hopkins, Missouri, the ceremony being performed at Clarinda, Iowa.

To them were born six children: Bonnie Sanderson of Prairie Village, Kans.; Donald of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Phyllis Craddock of Marshall, Mo.; Eldon of Des Moines, Iowa; James of Council Bluffs, Iowa and C. Dean of Bedford.

He is survived by his wife and children; two sisters and three brothers: Ruth Hoppel of Hopkins, Mo.; Wayne Hensley of Bedford; Opal Wallace of Milwaukee, Ore.; Halbert Hensley of Bedford, and Rollie Hensley of Maryville, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Hazel Safley and Garland Scott; and two brothers, Beryl and Reid Hensley; two grandsons, Jimmie Graves and Billy Hensley.

Ralph dearly loved his family and grandchildren and his home and many friends and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He was a good, kind and considerate husband and father, friend and neighbor, and the memories of his life will long be remembered.

Graveside services for Helen Margaret Hensley, 102, of Bedford, passed away August 29, 2012 at the Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 31, 2012 at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, IA. Visitation were held 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., August 31, 2012 at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford, IA. Memorials may be directed to the family at this time. Helen Margaret (Henning) Hensley was born in Atchison County Missouri, March 10, 1910; she was the daughter of William and Hannah (Walkinshaw.) She attended and graduated from Hopkins High School. Helen married Ralph "Bill" Hensley in 1928. To this blessed union six children, Bonnie, Donald, Phyllis, Eldon, James and Carl Dean, were born.

In 1931 Ralph and Helen began farming in Taylor County. Helen was always a hard worker. Together she and Ralph raised crops, milk cows, chickens and hogs. Helen also raised a garden each year and always enjoyed canning the harvest. Helen was also an excellent cook. She will always be remembered for making the "BEST" pies and fried chicken. Helen was also a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford and belonged to several other clubs and organizations through the years.

She is survived by her children; Eldon Hensley (Linda) of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jim (Mary Lou) Hensley of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Bonnie Pappageorge of Clinton, Missouri; twenty-three grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and her twenty-one great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ralph; her parents William and Hannah; her children Donald Hensley, Dean Hensley, and Phyllis Craddock; her siblings Don Henning, John Henning, Harold Henning, Ruth Harriett, and Martha Annan; and her grandchildren Billy, Jimmy and Steve.

Funeral services for Lyle Majors, age 84 of Bedford, who died Wednesday, February 6, 2002 were held Sunday, February 10, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Pastor Ted DeHass officiating. Interment with military rites accorded by the John F. Hardin American Legion Post No. 164 were held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be given in Lyle's name. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Lyle Vernon Majors was born September 9, 1917 in Page County, Iowa the son of Frank Majors and Anna Jepson Majors. Lyle grew up in rural Taylor County near the Siam area attending rural schools and the Hardee School. He answered the call to serve his country by entering the United States Army on March 25, 1942. On April 20, 1943 he was united in marriage to Wilma Nowels in Maryville, Missouri. Lyle served in the European Theatre Campaign fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. Lyle was then taken prisoner by the Germans. Upon his release after the war on July 31,1945, Lyle returned to Taylor County to farm until 1972 when he moved to Bedford where he did various jobs around town.

Lyle enjoyed working. He liked to collect things such as watches, etc., and he seemed to find great enjoyment by going to area auctions to buy boxes of junk and sift through them to find the treasures he enjoyed collecting.

Lyle is survived by three sons, Kenneth Majors and wife Georgia of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Bill Majors and wife Wilma of Everton, Arkansas; and Bruce Majors and wife Joyce of Bedford; a daughter, Kathy Garner and husband Gerald of Clarinda; four sisters, Erma Starkey of Sun City, Arizona; Gladys Slama of Berryville, Arkansas; Wanda Moore of Clarinda; and Wilma Morris of Berryville, Arkansas; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Oxley and wife Leona of Mt. Ayr; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Lyle in death are his parents, Frank and Anna; his wife Wilma in 1989; a brother Lloyd Majors and a sister, Charlene Coe.

Services for Wilma Elizabeth Majors, 70, were held September 6 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Mrs. Majors died September 4, 1989 at Heartland East Hospital in St. Joseph.

Wilma Elizabeth Majors, daughter of J. [ohn] W. [illiam] and Minnie [Bell] Guthrie Nowels, was born June 28, 1919 at Mound City, Mo. She moved to Taylor county at an early age and resided there the rest of her life.

Wilma was united in marriage to Lyle Vernon Majors on April 20, 1943 in Maryville, Mo. Together they had four children.

She was preceded in death by her mother Minnie Nowels Oxley; father J. [ohn] W. [illiam] Nowels; stepfather E. [than] I. [rvin] Oxley; one sister, Mildred Smith and one brother-in-law Byron Smith.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Lyle of the home; children Kenneth and wife Georgia of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Bill and wife Wilma of Harrison, Ark., Bruce and wife Joyce of Bedford, and Kathy and husband Dennis of Clarinda; eight grandchildren; one step granddaughter; two great grandchildren; one brother Lloyd and wife Leona Oxley of Mt. Obituary

Ida Shoemaker, daughter of Henry [Francis] and Samantha [Kinser] Shoemaker, was born at Murrayville, Morgan County, Illinois, December 4th, 1861, and died at her home north of Platteville Sunday afternoon, August 6th, 1916, aged 54 years, 8 months and 2 days.

In 1864, when she was three years of age, her parents moved to Atchison County, Missouri, and in 1866, they moved to Taylor County. Her father died April 19, 1873.

She was united in marriage to Alva K. Anthony October 24th, 1903 and with her husband has since made her home with her widowed mother on the farm north of Platteville.

Besides the husband and mother she leaves two brothers, A. [lonzo] G., who, since his sister’s illness became critical last spring, has made his home at the old home near Platteville, and H. [enry] F. Shoemaker, of Stoughton, Saskatchewan, Canada; one sister, Mrs. G. W. Brott [Rosa Belle], of near Redding, and other relatives and many friends, to mourn her death.

Mrs. Anthony united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Platteville about twelve years ago under the pastorate of Rev. Alfred Knoll and has remained faithful to her Master [rest of sentence unreadable].

Some three years ago she became ill and although everything was done that could be done she grew gradually worse and during the last year has suffered intensely, and death came to her as a great relief.

The funeral services were conducted from the Platteville Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock by her pastor, Rev. William Mercer, and interment took place in the Platteville cemetery. The services were very largely attended.

EDNA IRENE WEATHERLY BALCH

Edna Balch, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away September 23, 2012 at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, at the age of 85 years.

Edna Irene was born to Roy Marion Weatherly and Etta Fay (Sleep) Weatherly on the family farm west of Bedford, Iowa on August 25, 1927; she was the third of three daughters.

Edna attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Bedford High School in 1945. She was involved in 4H during high school - showing Herefords at the Taylor County Fair and also played violin in the school orchestra. After graduation she attended Normal Training for her teaching certificate and taught country school for two years.

Edna met her future husband, John Balch, on a triple blind date and they were married November 2, 1946 in Troy, Kansas. They were blessed with five children; Linda Kay, Margaret Ann, Nancy Lynn, John Michael, and Randy Joe.

She spent most of her life as a homemaker raising her children and for a few years was employed at the Pines in Atlantic. Family was important to her and she loved cooking and baking and left many fond memories of big holiday dinners with extended family. Edna had a generous heart and a good sense of humor.

She enjoyed doing latch hook, playing table games, having coffee with friends, and listening to a wide variety of music.

Edna is survived by her children: Linda Balch, Nancy Balch, Mike (Jocey) Balch of Atlantic, Iowa, Margaret (Rick) Norman of Stevensville, Montana, and Randy (Roxie Stuit) Balch of Clive, Iowa. Surviving grandchildren: Toby (Tara) Norman of Grove City, Pennsylvania, Bethany (Pablo) Calderon, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Stephanie (Jason) Holley of Bridgeport, Texas, Melissa Balch of Atlantic, Iowa, Shane Balch of Bridgeport, Texas, Jason Humphrey of Coralville, Iowa and eight great grandchildren; sister Mary Smith of Nebraska; and nieces and nephews.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in 1996; sister Gladys Cox; and grandson Andy Norman.

A funeral service will be held at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2012. The committal service will be in Athelstan Cemetery east of Bedford, Iowa. Pastor Al Seehusen, of Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic, will officiate. There will be open visitation at Rolands Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

[Hull, Richard Eugene]

Richard Eugene Hull was born September 26, 1950 in Maryville, Missouri to Glen [Elden] and Clara Belle [Auten] Hull. He passed away June 19, 2012 in the Albany Hospital due to bad health. He was the oldest of 4 sons.

Richard attended Blockton and Bedford schools. He also helped his parents on the family farm. He served three years in the United States Army. He spent time in Germany, the Vietnam War and then back to Germany.

On February 19, 1972 Richard married Ruby [Marie] Morse. To this union three daughters were born, Rose, Betty, and Barbara. They were married for 40 years. He worked on farms, had a welding and tire shop, drove truck over the road and later made horse carts. In 1989 at the age of 39 he had health problems and became disabled.

Richard gave his life to God in 1990 and was baptized with his wife Ruby and daughters Betty and Barbara. He enjoyed helping others and giving to others. He loved making things and giving them away.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Wilbur and Allen; grandparents and great-grandparents.

He is survived by wife Ruby of the home in Redding, three daughters: Rosie Miller and husband Shawn of Afton, Iowa, Betty Fields and husband Nick of Perry, Iowa and Barbara Strubberg and husband Andy of St. Louis, Missouri; parents: Glen and Clara Hull of Blockton, Iowa; grandchildren: Clayton and Taylor Miller of Afton, Iowa; Austin Claypole, Zavier and Anicka Fields of Perry, Iowa; Cassandra Bounds and Joey Strubberg of St. Louis, Missouri; and brother Bob Hull and wife Carolyn of Blockton, Iowa.

Funeral services were 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City, Missouri. Rev. Scott Marcum and Rev. Len Green officiated. Interment was in the Athelstan Cemetery in Blockton, Iowa.

Timothy Jon Novak

Timothy Jon “Tim” Novak, 63, of Ravenwood, Missouri passed away May 1, 2012. On October 12, 1948, Tim was the first of five children born to Cyril Laverne “Bus” and Mary (Swett) Novak.

Tim was raised on the family farm south of Diagonal, Iowa. He graduated from Diagonal high school in 1967.

On August 7, 1999 Tim was united in marriage to Connie Lorraine Walker at the Assembly of God Church in Grant City, Missouri. They shared 13 loving years of marriage together. His two children, Chris and Tara, were born in a previous marriage with Phyllis Fletchall.

Tim’s true passion in life was being a diesel mechanic. His love and mechanical knowledge enabled him to establish his own business, Northwest Engine. Tim was one of the most sought after mechanics in the area. He spent many hours working on pulling tractors for himself and others.

Tim enjoyed gardening, family get-togethers and following the sporting events of his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Reading and crossword puzzles were favorite past-times of his.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Joe.

Survivors include his wife, Connie, of the home in Ravenwood, Missouri; his son, Chris (Bobbie) Novak of Grant City, Missouri; his daughter, Tara (Jason) Lynch of Maloy, Iowa; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emma and Ella Novak of Grant City, Missouri and Paige and PJ Lynch of Maloy, Iowa; his brother, Tom Novak of Diagonal, Iowa; his sister, Sherri Sheil (Steve Brown) of Clarinda, Iowa; his brother, Rob Novak of Diagonal, Iowa, and numerous relatives and family friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 4 at the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City with Rev. Len Green officiating. Interment was in the Athelstan Cemetery near Athelstan, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Herman (Mabel) Smith, 68, of Athelstan, Iowa, held July 13 at the Athelstan Community Church, were conducted by Rev. Ward Campbell. Mrs. Smith died July 9 at Clarinda Municipal hospital. Interment was at the Athelstan Cemetery.

Mabel [Vera] (Irvin) Smith, daughter of [Eg] Bert and [Winnie Addie] Bell [Smith] Irvin, was born May 12, 1902 at Athelstan, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to George D. Squires on March 17, 1919. One son was born to this union, George, of Carmichael, California. This marriage terminated.

On March 24, 1924 she was united in marriage to Herman [Edgar] Smith at Athelstan where they made their home on a farm and later moved to Athelstan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her former and latter husband; one sister, Edith; and a brother, Guy.

Mabel was converted nearly seven years ago and was faithful to her Church and Lord.

She is survived by her son, George, and wife; one grandson, Stephen Squire [s], and one granddaughter, Cheryl Squire [s], all of Carmichael, California; two sisters, Zora Mannas of Omaha, Nebr.; Anna Black of Bedford; three brothers, Frank of Omaha, Nebr., Robert of Bedford and Elmer of Shenandoah; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Athelstan Rites For H. E. Smith

Funeral services for Herman Edgar Smith, 65, lifetime resident of the Athelstan area, held June 6 at the Athelstan Community Church, were conducted by Rev. Ward Campbell. Mr. Smith died June 3, 1965, at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. He had been in failing health for a number of years, but his condition became worse which necessitated spending the last few weeks in the hospital. Interment was at Athelstan Cemetery.

Herman Smith, son of' Charles and Adeline Bristow Smith was born March 4, 1900, near Athelstan, Iowa in Worth County, Mo.

He lived all of his life around Athelstan where he engaged in farming and trucking.

On March 26, 1924, he was united in marriage to Mable Irvin Squires.

Ha was preceded in death by his parents, one brother one sister, and two half sisters.
