[Chittenden, Ann Hurd]

Mrs. Thomas
Chittenden
In
the town of Lincolnshire, England, on February 14th, 1825, Ann Hurd was born. She died July 17th, 1919, at the
advanced age of 94 years, 5 months and 6 days, a ripe age to which but few in
our times attain.
When
a child Ann was brought to
America, the land of wondrous opportunities. Her first home in this country was
in the state of Ohio. Later she lived in Michigan, where she married Thomas
Chittenden on March 21, 1846. In
1866 they moved to Illinois where they spent ten years, and then came to Iowa.
The most of the last 43 years of her life was spent in this community. Three
years ago last November death claimed her husband, who was then in his 94th
year. Her only son had died in 1880, which left but one daughter, Amy, with whom she made her home during declining
years. This aged mother enjoyed from Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fleming that care and filial affection which made the
infirmities of old age fall as lightly as was possible.
Mrs.
Chittenden was converted in early
life in the Baptist church, but joined the Mound, Cumberland Presbyterian
church, in Stark Co., Ill., in 1870. She remained a member of the same until
her death. She was noted for her kindness in sickness, and was ever ready to
help any needing help till the infirmities of age rendered her unable for such
ministries. Many who have been the subjects of her helpfulness mourn the loss
of a dear friend.
About
fifteen years ago she suffered the loss of her eyesight, but enjoyed
comparatively good health otherwise till near the end. The past two weeks she
suffered intensely, till death came and gave her release.
The
funeral was held at her late home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by
Rev. T. R. Aikin of Clearfield. Interment in the Conway Cemetery.

Obituary Mrs. Wm.
Fleming
Amy
Jane Chittenden was born in
Cassopolis, Michigan, March 6, 1847, and died at her home July 18, 1920, aged
73 years, 4 months, and 12 days.
She
moved with her parents from Michigan to Stark County, Illinois, in 1866 and
from there to Taylor County, Iowa in 1876 to the farm where she has since made
her home. On October 10, 1879 she was married to Wm. C. [ortley] Fleming. She had one brother Wallace, who died March 6, 1880. When but a girl she
united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Illinois.
For
many years she had cared for her aged parents, who lived with her, since the
death of their son.
Her
mother was blind for the last fifteen years of her life and this with her
feeble condition made her a great care, but Mrs. Fleming's unfailing patience and loving attendance was the
marvel of all who knew her.
Since
the death of her mother whom she survived but 1 year and 1 day she has been
gradually failing in health, and while her friends were conscious of her
failing health, they were surprised that the end should come so soon.
She
leaves to mourn her death besides her friends and neighbors, only her husband
and one or two distant relatives. It is probable that her unfailing devotion to
her afflicted mother shortened her life. Be it so, those who knew her best feel
that she would not have it otherwise. But surely, He who said, "Honor thy
father and mother", will say, "Well done thou good and faithful
servant."
The
relatives attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Fleming, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Fleming, Mrs. J. C. Fleming, and Miss Gertrude of Illinois, Mr. R. Fleming and family, and Tuttle and family of Lenox.
Funeral
was held on Tuesday at 10 o'clock from her late home. Interment in Conway
Cemetery. Rev. S. Boyd Johnson, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church
officiating.

obituary
Sudden Death of Mr.
Perry Henderson
We
find in the Rock Island Union of June 13, the following notice of the death of Mr. Perry Henderson, father of Marcus Henderson, living a few miles south of Bedford, to which a
brief reference was made in the Republican of last week.
"Mr.
Perry Henderson, owner of the
beautiful 420-acre stock farm near Hillsdale, in Canoe Creek, was found dead in
bed at 7 o'clock on Sunday morning, looking as perfectly natural as if alive.
He brought home a small herd of cattle on Saturday, enjoyed his supper and went
to bed at 6 o'clock, feeling tired, and requesting to be called at 7 o'clock on
the following morning. Deputy Coroner Howes held an inquest at the residence at
6 o'clock on Sunday evening. The jurors were John A. Liphardt, foreman; D. W.
Martin, Geo. W. McMurphy, Christopher Dillon, Dr. Stutzman and Jasper Sell. Dr.
Stutzman gave it as his opinion that Mr. Henderson had died from paralysis of the heart, and said
that he had treated him for a functional affection of the heart about a year,
and had supposed that Mr. Henderson had got entirely over his heart trouble. The jury returned a verdict
of death from paralysis of the heart. Mr. Perry Henderson was born on December 6, 1820, near White Hall,
Greene County. He came to Rock Island County in 1842, and permanently settled
on his fine farm in Canoe Creek in 1845. He leaves four children: Capt.
Marcus Henderson, the Misses
Lucy and Martha Henderson and Mrs.
H. Quick. He was a brother to Mrs.
T. J. Robinson, and uncle to Mrs.
E. D. Sweeney, of Rock Island.
His so sudden death has been a very great shock to his large circle of friends
and acquaintances.
"The
funeral will take place at 1 p. m. to-morrow, from the residence to Bethesda
church, in Canoe Greek, the Rev. D. H. Clark, of Port Byron, officiating."
