Died in Idaho

Mrs. John Thompson received word this week of the death of her aunt, Mrs. Laura [Dugan] Colwell, which occurred at Ashton, Idaho, August 2d. Mrs. Colwell was a sister of L. [aban] M. and Geo. Dugan, late of this city, and for a number of years lived in Polk Township. She leaves a husband and three children and one sister to mourn her death.

Former Taylor County Resident

Word was received by Mrs. John Thompson that her uncle, Milton Colwell, had died [May 11th] at the home of his daughter in Idaho last week. Mr. Colwell will be remembered by many of the older settlers, having lived on a farm in Polk Township for many years. About seven years ago he paid a visit here. He was 75 years old at the time of his death. The many friends in the county will sympathize with the relatives in the loss of this good man.

HAROLD T. DORR

Funeral services for Harold T. [heron] Dorr were held at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home Sunday, November 11, 1990 with Rev. Ted DeHass officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Bedford, Iowa.

Harold T. [heron] Dorr was born to John W. [arren] and Verna L. [ee] Smith Dorr on April 21, 1913 near Hopkins, Nodaway County, Missouri.

He received his education in the Bedford, Iowa schools. He joined the First Baptist Church in Bedford over 50 years ago.

Harold was a farmer all his life and took great pride in his crops and livestock.

He married Dorris Bork December 4, 1966.

He later married Lucretia Walker August 26, 1976.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Earl D. [avid] Dorr and one sister, Cora A. Dorr Mullin.

Harold is survived by two nephews, Maurice L. Mullin of San Jose, Calif, and Wm. Edward Mullin of Westfield, N. J.

GLADYS ESINHART

Funeral services for Gladys Esinhart were held Friday, March 15 at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas, Nev. Mrs. Esinhart died March 13, 1996 at the age of 84.

Gladys Opal Hatfield was born November 20, 1911 to Fred Sylvester Hatfield and Estella May John Hatfield in Taylor County, Iowa. She was married November 20, 1933 to Harrell Lee Busby. To this union were born four children, two daughters, Donna Lou Dougherty of Bedford, Iowa, and Sandra Mae Goudie of Palm Desert, Calif.; two sons, Edward Lee Busby, now deceased, and William Hatfield Busby of Las Vegas.

Gladys was married in 1958 to Tom Northcutt of Wichita, Kan. Following his death in 1990 she married Clifford Esinhart in Las Vegas. Clifford died in September 1995 following a bout with cancer.

Gladys graduated from Bedford High School in 1930. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Friends University in Wichita, Kan., in 1962 and did graduate work at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She taught elementary school for many years in Bedford, Iowa, Wichita, Kan., Napa, Calif., and Las Vegas, Nev. She was a member of Canyon Ridge Christian Church in Las Vegas and was active in the Vintager group there.

Mrs. Esinhart is survived by her daughter Donna and husband, Max Dougherty of Bedford; her daughter Sandra and husband, Gordon Goudie of Palm Desert, Calif.; son Bill and wife Sandee Busby of Las Vegas; eight grand-children, Terry Dougherty, Debra Grundman, Jacki Thrasher, Sandra Schrader, Greg Goudie, Tracy Busby Rogers, Stephanie Busby and Travis Busby; and 13 great grandchildren.

Also surviving are two sisters, Ruby King of Upland, Calif., and Vesta Jones of San Jose, Calif.; one brother, Cecil Hatfield of Kansas City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hatfield; her three husbands; one son, Edward Busby of Wichita, Kan.; one brother Orville Hatfield of San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 20 in Bedford, Iowa with Pastor Jamie Mogler officiating. Entombment was in Fairview Cemetery.

Final Rites Held Here Jan. 28 For Lawrence John

Funeral services for Lawrence Amos John, 81, of Bedford, were held January 28 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here with Carl Cummings officiating. Mr. John died in Bedford January 25,1979. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery, near Bedford.

Lawrence Amos John, son of Amos Jackson John and Franey Elizabeth Coy John, was born at Bedford, Iowa, January 30, 1897.

He grew to maturity in the community where he was born where he attended the public school and assisted with the work on the farm.

He was united in marriage to Pearl Oxley and two sons were born to them; Orville and Virgil.

With the exception of a few years lived in Clifton, Kansas, he had lived in or near Bedford, Iowa, where he farmed for a time and in later years he had been maintenance man for the Christian Church; the Bedford Public Library and the Bedford National Bank. Lawrence took great pride in his work and he was a faithful and trusted workman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters and four brothers.

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons; Orville of Des Moines, Iowa, and Virgil of St. Joseph, Missouri; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was a member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church of Bedford, Iowa.

His family and friends will remember him as a kind and considerate father, and loved one.

Death Follows Operation for Appendicitis In Council Bluffs

Ara Sawyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sawyer of Bedford, died at his home in Council Bluffs Tuesday night at 12 o'clock, following an operation for appendicitis, which was performed at his home. The remains were taken to Creston and the funeral services will be conducted at that place this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Creston where he has a son burled. Mr. Sawyer leaves to mourn his death his wife and a nine year old son; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sawyer of Bedford; two brothers, Crawford Sawyer of Council Bluffs, and R. [ansom] H. [enry] Sawyer of Norboro, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Eldora Hindman of Bedford and Sylvia, now residing in Kansas. The father and Mrs. Hindman went to Creston Wednesday to attend the funeral.

Ara Sawyer – Ara Sawyer, who months ago gave up his work in the barber shop at Council Bluffs on account of failing health, was operated on for appendicitis at the Mercy hospital, Council Bluffs, last week and died shortly following the operation. Deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sawyer of this city and spent several weeks here during the summer, while his parents were in such a critical condition.
His father and sister, Mrs. Eldora Hindman, attended the funeral which was held at Creston their former home, and the home of Mrs. Sawyer's parents.
Deceased spent most of [his] life here and had many friends who sympathize with the bereaved family. He was 38 years old at the time of his death. Besides his wife and nine-year-old son he is survived by his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sawyer; two sisters, Mrs. Eldora Hindman and another sister who lives in Kansas; and two brothers, Crawford, who lives in Council Bluffs and R. H. Sawyer, of Northboro, Mo. The funeral was held at 2:30 Thursday from the home of Mrs. Sawyer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Saylor, Creston.

Crawford Sawyer Buried At Villisca

Crawford Sawyer, a former resident of Bedford and a barber in Villisca for many years, died at Grant, Iowa last week. Funeral services and burial were at Villisca.

Crawford Sawyer - Funeral services for Crawford Sawyer formerly a resident of Villisca, were held here Monday, August 25, at 2 p.m. at the Sutphen funeral home conducted by Rev. Kenneth Bressler of Grant. Mr. Sawyer died Saturday August 23, at the home of his daughter, and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Embree, southeast of Grant.
Crawford Sawyer, son of Frederick and Ellezanna Sawyer, was born at Bedford, Iowa, November 8, 1885, and was 66 years old at his death. He was united in marriage on September 5, 1905 in Villisca with Edith Alice Hopkins, who preceded him in death in 1932. To them were born three daughters, Mary, Eleanor, and Rachel.
In 1935, Mr. Sawyer was married to Mrs. Sadie Foster, who survives him. He leaves also his three daughters, Mrs. Clifford Embree, Villisca, Mrs. A. W. Hammerlund, St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and Mrs. S. L. Spargur, Rapid City, S. D.; a step son, Virgil Anderson, Sacramento, California; a sister, Mrs. Eldora Hindman, Memphis, Tenn.: a brother, Ransom, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; eleven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Mr. Sawyer resided all of his life in Southwest Iowa with the exception of eight years spent in Oregon. He was employed at barbering in Shenandoah, Corning, Creston, Lenox, Bedford, New Market, Grant, and in Oregon. He was ill two years and bedfast the last ten weeks preceding his death. He united with the Christian Church in his youth.
Singing at the funeral was by Max Nordyke, accompanied by Mrs. H. A. Eno and in charge of flowers were Mrs. Grace Nordyke and Mrs. Kittie Meyers. Pallbearers were Guy Embree, Leslie Embree, Jay Bryson, Harold Nordyke, Clifford English, and Earl Marsh and interment was in the Villisca Cemetery.

Mrs. F. A. Sawyer Dead

Mrs. F. [rederick] A. [bel] Sawyer [Ellezanna], who has been sick for many months, died about 8 o'clock Saturday morning. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 1:30 Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. C. C. Hatcher, assisted by Rev. W. E. Robb of the Christian church. After the regular service the W. R. C. performed their simple ritualistic service. Interment was in the Graceland cemetery west of town. Her son Crawford of Council Bluffs and a daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Gritton of Joplin, Mo., were present at the funeral. A daughter, Mrs. Eldora Hindman, has been with her mother most of the time since early summer and was here at the time of her death.

Mrs. Fred A. Sawyer

Mrs. Fred A. [bel] Sawyer died at her home in west Bedford at 8 o’clock Saturday morning, December 19. The funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock conducted by C. C. Hatcher, assisted by Rev. W. E. Robb, pastor of the First Christian church. The Sedgwick Relief Corps, of which she was a member, held their ritualistic services at the church. Interment was made in the Graceland cemetery.

Ellazanna [Ellezanna] Marshall was born in Holmes County, Ohio, July 2, 1846. She was converted when a young girl and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. About eighteen years ago she joined the First Baptist church of Bedford and was baptized by Rev. Mr. Lewis. March 3, 1871, she was united in marriage to Fred A. [bel] Sawyer of Indianola, Ia. To this union were born seven children, four of whom survive. They are Sylvia Gritton of Joplin, Mo., R. ansom] H.[enry] Sawyer of Norborne, Mo., Eldora P. [auline] Hindman of Bedford and Crawford Sawyer of Council Bluffs. One sister, Mrs. Margaret Murphy of Bevington, Ia., one brother Stewart Marshall of Eureka, Cal., and ten grandchildren also survive.

F. [rederick] A. [bel] Sawyer died yesterday at the home of his son, Crawford Sawyer, in Council Bluffs. He had been at the home of his son most of the time since the death of his wife several months ago. The body will arrive in Bedford Saturday morning, and, while funeral arrangements have not been completed, the ceremonies will be held at the First Baptist church Saturday.

OBITUARY

F. A. Sawyer.

F. [rederick] A. [bel] Sawyer died at the home of his son, Crawford, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Wednesday, July 28. The body was brought to Bedford Saturday morning, and funeral services were held that morning at the Baptist church conducted by Rev. C. C. Hatcher. Interment was made in the Graceland cemetery.

Frederick A. [bel] Sawyer was born in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, December 24, 1836. Spent the early part of his life there and enlisted in Company H, First Cavalry where he served regularly, and faithfully for three years. He was then mustered out on account of disability. About 33 years ago he came to Indianola, Iowa where he was married to Elegamna [Ellezanna] Marshall Perkins in 1871. To this union seven children were born, four of whom survive. They are Mrs. Silvia Gretton, Joplin, Mo., R. [ansom] H. [enry] Sawyer of Warsaw, Mo., Mrs. Eldora Cromwell, and Crawford Sawyer of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Mr. Sawyer's last utterance was to tell Brother Hatcher to tell all his friends good-bye.

The body of the four-year-old son, Vernon Saylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ara Sawyer, of this city, was laid to rest Friday afternoon at Graceland cemetery, after Rev. James O'May had conducted the last sad rites over the child. Funeral services was held at 8 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Sawyer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Saylor, at 511 South Maple street, Rev. James O'May speaking the consoling words to the broken hearted parents and relatives. A large concourse of the friends and neighbors, including members of the Barber Union in a body, gathered at the home. The floral contributions were profuse and beautiful, the little casket being showered with the fragrant blossoms. Included in the funeral party were the following relatives from out of town: Mrs. F. [rederick] A. [bel] Sawyer and son, R. [ansom] H. Sawyer, and son-in-law, Frank Hindman, all of Bedford; and C. [rawford] Sawyer and wife of Villisca. —Creston Advertiser

OBITUARY

Mrs. Swan Sherbeck.

Mrs. Tilda Maria [Johnson] Sherbeck, who for many years has been a great sufferer, died at her home near Bedford, September 26, 1909. At the time of her death she was 60 years, 9 months and 22 days old.

[Matilda] Tilda Maria Johnson was born in Sweden, December 4, 1848. At the age of 19 years she started for America.  She stopped one year in Denmark and then came to New York.

She was married to Swan Sherbeck December 2, 1871, at Rock Island, Ill. To this union twelve children were born, two of whom died in infancy, ten of whom are still living. With her husband Mrs. Sherbeck came to Iowa in February 1874, and located in Taylor County on the farm which has ever since been her home. She was united to the Morning Star Presbyterian Church at the time of its organization and has ever since been a faithful member. Her life was quiet and unobtrusive but all who knew her loved her and her friends were as numerous as her acquaintances.

The funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o' clock conducted by Rev. S. E. Henry after which the body was laid to rest in Titus cemetery.

Mrs. Swan Swanson

Amanda Roos was born in Stockholm Sweden, the 9th day of October 1848. She departed this life December 23rd, 1929. She was 81 years, 2 months, and 13 days of age. She came to America in 1876, and was married to Swan Swanson on March 13, 1879, at Galesburg, Ill. One child, Ida Linnea, Mrs. Luther Burk, was born to them on January 26th, 1880. They came to Iowa in 1881, and have resided here since, with the exception of one year, which was spent in Texas and Missouri. She was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Funeral services were held at the Stithem Funeral Chapel at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. F. McMican. Interment was made in Graceland cemetery.

Bob Swanson Succumbed Tuesday

Robert Swanson, a resident of the Bedford community for many years, died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Ida Burk, Tuesday January 3, after a few days illness.

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Gordon F. MacLean. Burial was in the Graceland cemetery.

Mr. Swanson was born in Stockholm, Sweden, March 27, 1863, being aged 86 years, 9 months, and 14 days at the time of his death.

Death Of Mrs. Vosburg

Mrs. Martha C. [ornelia Atkins] Vosburg [h] died at her home in Mason Township yesterday, (Wednesday) morning at 9:15 of rheumatism and heart disease, age 67 years, 5 months and 16 days.

The funeral will be held at the residence, tomorrow, (Friday) at 1 p. m. conducted by Rev. Barackman. Interment at Titus cemetery.

Mrs. Vosburg [h] was the wife of Abram Vosburg [h]. For many years they have lived on the farm in Mason Township, and have a large circle of acquaintances throughout the west part of the county.

Funeral services for Edgar Lawrence Wainwright, 83, well-known lifetime Taylor County farmer, were held April 12 at the Bedford Methodist church with Rev. J. Milton Kinney officiating. Mr. Wainwright died April 10, 1968 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery west of Bedford.

Edgar Lawrence Wainwright, only son of Arthur Stanberry and Susan Moore Wainwright, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, January 4, 1885.

He was united in marriage to Sarah Blanche Pfander, April 8, 1908 at Clarinda, Iowa. They lived on a farm southwest of Gravity for 28 years and here their three children were born. In 1936 the family moved to the old Wainwright home seven miles west of Bedford. In October 1950 after two years of illness his wife passed away.

In 1952 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Sheets of Long Beach, California. She passed away in December 1963.

He was preceded in death by four sisters: Edna (Mrs. James Fairbanks), Nina (Mrs. John Terbell), Alta (Mrs. Clyde Stephens), and Jessie (Mrs. Eura Bradley).

He leaves two sons and one daughter, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren: Arthur & his wife Beulah of rural Clarinda, their two daughters, (Erma Lee), Mrs. Bill Zenor and her husband and their four boys, Dennis [Eugene], Randall [David], Craig and Scott of Red Oak; (Janice) Mrs. Bill Judson and her husband and son Russell [Eric] of Omaha; Virginia [Lee] Rope, her children Gretchen and Richard and granddaughter, Becky Susan of Clarinda; Edgar Jr. and his wife Mary Helen, son Philip of rural Sheridan, Mo., and son, Stephen, his wife Linda and son, Christopher, of Des Moines.

He was a member of Bedford Methodist Church.

EDGAR WAINWRIGHT, JR.

Edgar Lawrence Wainwright, Jr. was born February 3, 1917 on a farm south of Gravity, Iowa. His parents were Edgar L. [awrence] and Sarah Blanche [Pfander] Wainwright. He passed away on Tuesday Feb. 12 in Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb. Edgar was 74 years and nine days old.

Edgar was the youngest of three children: a sister, Virginia [Lee] Rope and Arthur Wainwright reside in Clarinda, Iowa.

Edgar grew up on the farm and received his education in Taylor County. He graduated from the Bedford High School in 1934. Upon graduation, he began the pursuit of a career in farming. In 1940 he married Mary Helen Payne. To this union two sons were born: Rev. Steven Edgar and Dr. Philip Thomas.

Edgar and Mary Helen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past summer.

Those left to mourn his death and cherish the memories of his life are: his wife Mary Helen, two sons, Steven and Philip, five grandchildren: Christopher, Adam, Anna Wainwright, Nathan and Bridget Wainwright. One granddaughter, Emily, preceded him in death; many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Edgar was a loving father, husband and caring friend to many. He thanked God for each day of his life and although in poor health, he continued to provide his family with the sensitive, warm, and caring attitude of a husband, father, and grandfather. The pain is over. May he rest in peace.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 14 at the Bedford United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Shultz, Rev. Sandy Wainwright, and Rev. Steven Wainwright officiating. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.

Rites Sunday For Mrs. Wainwright, 62

Mrs. Edgar Wainwright [Sarah Blanche Pfander], 62, died at the Municipal hospital, Clarinda, at 10 o'clock Tuesday night, Oct. 31. She had been in ill health the past two years, and became worse two weeks ago.

The funeral services will be held at the Bedford Methodist church at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5, conducted by Rev. Lester Greenwood of Clarinda, assisted by Rev. Robt. M. Peters of Bedford. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.

Mrs. Wainwright is survived by her husband; three children, Arthur Wainwright, Mrs. Herbert Rope [Virginia Lee], Edgar Wainwright, jr., all of Clarinda; and by several grandchildren.
