Eliza Burge Dies
Mrs.
Eliza [Belle Eakin Price] Burge,
92, a former resident of the Gravity community, died at her home in Kalispell,
Montana, recently [July 12, 1941]. She is survived by two sons and a daughter;
also by two sisters, Mrs. J. [ohn] D. [ow] Eighmy [Martha Olin Price], 88, of Bedford and Mrs. Amanda [Margaret] Wilson, 98, of California. Burial was made in Montana.

Mrs.
Burge Passes Away
Ellen Moorewood [Morewood] was born in Columbus, Md., May 3, 1836. Died at her late residence
in Conway, Iowa, July 1, 1909, aged 73 years, 11 months and 28 days.
She left the place of
her birth at 19 years of age and came to New London, Iowa, where she made her
home with her sister, Mrs. Mary [Ann] Fuller, until Oct. 20, 1856, when she was united in
marriage to William D. Burge and to this union was given six children, four boys, [James] Henry and Pearl [Francis],
of Conway, [William] Chauncey, of Villisca, Iowa, and Harry [George Harlan], of Gravity, Iowa, and two girls, Mrs. Mary E.
[llen] Dunlavy, of Gravity, Iowa,
and Mrs. Martha McGee, of
Merritt, South Dakota, all being present at the funeral, except Mrs. McGee.
In 1856 she, with her
husband, came to Taylor county, Iowa, to their farm three miles northwest of
Gravity, where she resided forty years, where all of her children were born and
reared to manhood and womanhood, she being one of the early pioneers of this
part of the county. In 1894 she moved to Alvin, Texas, where she resided two
and a half years, thence to Fayetteville, Ark., thence to Purdy, Mo., thence to
Conway, Iowa, in 1892, where she resided 7 years to the time of her death.
While her illness
continued for many weeks, her suffering very severe at times, yet it was
endured with remarkable Christian patience. She made a profession of
Christianity early in life and united with the M. E. church then, about fifty
years ago she united with the Missionary Baptist church of Gravity, being one
of the charter members. She was a woman of firm conviction, loved the church of
Christ and always had a kind word for those who were trying to do good, and
quick to reprove what she thought to be wrong. She was very industrious,
possessed an enterprising spirit, was kind hearted, sympathetic, loving in
disposition, which made her many friends.
The funeral was
conducted by Rev. Osborne, of New Market, in the Baptist church in Gravity at
11 o'clock, assisted by James Burns, pastor of the Christian church of that
place. The church and casket were beautifully decorated with floral offerings
and a very large audience of relatives and friends were in attendance.
By her request her
four sons and two grandsons were pallbearers and the Eastern Star Lodge of
Conway, of which she was a member, acted as escort. Her remains were laid rest
in the Gravity cemetery. —Conway Record.

Morewood Burge
Ellen Morewood was born in Columbus, Md., May 3, 1836. Died at

with her sister, Mrs. Mary [Ann] Fuller, until Oct 30, 1856, when she was united in marriage to William
D. Burge and to this union were
given six children: four boys, [James] Henry and Pearl
[Francis] of Conway, [George] Harlin [Harlan] of Gravity, [William] Chauncey of Villisca; and two girls, Mrs. M. [ary] E.[llen] Dunlavy of Gravity and Mrs. Martha McGee of Merritt, S. Dak., all being present at the
funeral except Mrs. McGee.
In 1857 she with her
family came to Taylor county, Iowa, and settled on the farm three miles
northwest of Gravity where they resided for forty years, and where all of their
children were born and reared to womanhood and manhood, except one.
In 1894 she moved to
Alvin, Tex., where she resided about two and one-half years, thence to
Fayetteville, Ark., thence to Purdy, Mo., and thence to Conway in 1902 where
she resided seven years to the time of her death. While her illness continued
for many weeks, and her sufferings were severe at times, yet it was born with
remarkable patience and Christian resignation. She made a profession of

About fifty years ago she united with the Missionary Baptist church being one
of the charter members of the Gravity Baptist church.

hearted, sympathetic and loving in disposition, which made her many friends.
The funeral services
were conducted by Elder Osborn of New Market in the Baptist church on the
following Sunday at 11 o'clock, assisted by James Burns, pastor of the
Christian church. Both church and casket were heavily decorated with floral
offerings and by her own request four sons and two grandsons were the
pallbearers. A very large delegation of relatives and friends followed her
remains to their last resting place in the Gravity cemetery. D.

Floyd
Burge Of Conway Dies
Floyd Burge, a long-time resident of the Conway community,
died unexpectedly at his home east of Conway, early Thursday morning, September
12.
Funeral services were
held at the Conway Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Sept. 15, conducted by
the pastor of the church, Rev. Howard DeVore. Burial was in Lexington cemetery
with military services at the grave.
Floyd, son of [James] Henry and Mary [Jane] McCullough Burge, was born Nov. 26, 1889 at Gravity, and died at
the age of 67 years, nine months, 16 days.
When a small child he
moved with his parents to Purdy, Mo., and in 1902 they moved to Conway, where Floyd lived the rest of his life.
He was a member of
American Legion Post 591 and a veteran of World War I.
On March 7, 1927 he
was married to Leah Litteer.
They moved to a farm east of Conway, where they had since resided.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lura and one brother, [William] Claire.
He
is survived by his wife, and by one sister, Mrs. Orda [Ellen] Hess of Conway; two nieces and two nephews.

GRAVITY — [George] Harlan Burge, 95, of Gering, Nebr., died Monday at a local
hospital.
He was born Dec. 24,
1861, at Gravity and farmed here for several years. He married Asenath
Keasling in 1882 and she died in
1889. Mr. Burge married Gertrude
[Leah] Asbury at Gravity in 1901
and she died June 11, 1954.
He moved to Gering in
1921 and bought the Thornton Hardware & furniture store In East Gering. In
July 1925, he and a son, Cleo started
a grocery and produce business. For the past 15 years Mr. Burge was in the real estate business.
Survivors are two
sons, Cleo of Gering and Kenneth of San Leandro, Calif., two daughters, Mrs. C.
[larence] R. McDowell [Druie] of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Kenneth
Datel [Leona] of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren
and four great grandchildren.
Services were held
Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Boley-Dennis funeral home, the Rev. Henry Beatty
officiating. Burial was in [Gering West] Lawn [cemetery].

Gertrude Leah
[Asbury] Burge, 81, of Gering,
Nebr., died at her home last Friday. Services were held the following Monday
afternoon at the Boley Dennis funeral home in Gering with the Rev. Richard
Carlyon conducting the services. Burial was in Gering West Lawn cemetery.
Mrs. Burge was born March 1, 1873 at Plattsburg, Mo. She
attended the Plattsburg schools and was graduated from the John Hopkins
hospital of nursing in Galveston, Texas on Sept. 9, 1901. She was married to [George] Harlan Burge at St. Joseph, Mo. Following their marriage she
came to Gravity, Iowa, where she lived until 1921 when they moved to Gering
where she lived until her death. She was a member of the Methodist church and
the Golden Rule Sunday school class.
She is survived by
her husband, two daughters, Mrs. C. [larence] R. McDowell [Druie] of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Kenneth Datel [Leona] of Terrytown; two sons, Cleo Burge at Gering and Kenneth of San Leandro, Calif.; a sister, Mrs.
Florence Kendall of St. Joseph;

[James] Henry
Burge, 90, a merchant in Conway
for many years, died at his home there Sunday, August 7. He had been in failing
health for several years.
The funeral services
were held at the Conway Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon and burial was in
the Gravity cemetery.
He
is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Orda [Ellen] Hess; two sons, Floyd Burge and his wife, and Dick Burge, all of Conway. There are also several
grandchildren.

- Henry Burge
James Henry, son of William and Ellen [Morehouse] Burge, was born in Illinois on October 1, 1859 and died
at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Orda [Ellen] Hess in Conway on August 7, at the age of 89 years, 10
months and 6 days.
At the age of six
weeks he came with his parents in a covered wagon and settled on a farm near
Gravity where he grew to manhood. He spent the rest of his life in Taylor
County excepting one and one-half years spent in Missouri.
On April 29, 1886 he
was married to Mary Jane McCullough.
To them four children were born: Lura who died in childhood; Floyd; Orda [Ellen]; and [William] Clair all of Conway.
His wife preceded him
in death on January 7, 1937.
He was in the
mercantile business in Conway for over thirty years.
He is survived by his
three children, Floyd, Orda [Ellen] and [William] Clair of Conway, four grandchildren, one great
grandchild, one sister, Mrs. Mary Ellen Dunlavy of Sterling, Colorado, one brother, Harlan
Burge of Gering, Nebr.
Funeral services were
held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Conway with Rev. D. C.
Callison officiating. Interment was in Gravity cemetery.

conducted by her pastor the Rev. J. A. Walls. Interment was in the Conway
cemetery.

was saddened Thursday morning when word was passed around of the death of Mrs.

77, long time resident of Conway. Though a patient sufferer for years, she was
always cheerful and glad to have friends and neighbors call for a visit. The
three children, Floyd Burge of

Denison, were with her when the end came. Funeral services were held Saturday

near Gravity, April 22, 1898, and died at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines
Jan. 4, 1951, aged 52 years, 7 months and five days.
When a young boy, he
moved with his parents to Missouri, where they resided for a short time, later
moving to Conway, where he attended and finished school. He attended college at
Highland Park University in Des Moines, but before finishing school there, he
entered the service in World War I.
In 1920, he was
united in marriage to Nellie Dahna of Estherville, and to this union one daughter, Mary, was born.
In 1927, he was
united in marriage to Alma Burkart of Estherville. To this union four children were born, Dicksie Lou, Ruth,
Richard and Donald.
He was in falling
health the last years of his life and had spent six years in the Veterans
hospital in Excelsior Springs, Mo.
He was preceded in
death by his parents, a sister and a daughter, Ruth.
Survivors
include his wife; two daughters, Mary of Ft. Dodge, Dicksie Lou Haukoos of Estherville; two sons, Richard, in the U. S. Navy and Donald of Hammond, Ind., two grandchildren of
Estherville; a brother, Floyd;
a sister, Mrs. Orda [Ellen] Hess of Conway.

Away at Home in Conway Friday—Funeral Services Held Sunday.

Resident
of Taylor County Fifty-five Years—Dies at Age of 83 Year.

Burge, seventy-four years a
resident of Iowa and fifty-five years a resident of Taylor County, died at his
home in Conway Friday. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Sunday morning
at the Presbyterian Church in Conway, conducted by Rev. Mr. Osburn, pastor of
the Baptist church, after which the remains were taken to the Gravity cemetery,
where they were laid to rest beside those of his wife. The Masonic lodge had
charge of the burial services.
Mr. Burge was born in Licking County, Ohio, January 16,
1829. When he was 2 years old the family moved to Illinois, and seven years
later came to Henry county, Iowa, they being among the early settlers of that
county, which was one of the early counties of Iowa to be settled by the
westward bound pioneers. December 23, 1849, he was married to Elizabeth
Roudybush. They were the parents
of two children, Oliver A. Burge,
who died In Montana a few years ago, and an infant son who died with his mother
in 1855. October 30, 1856, Mr. Burge married Ellen Morewood.
They were the parents of four sons and two daughters, all of whom are living.
In 1857 Mr. Burge came to Taylor County, locating three miles
northwest of Gravity, where the living sons and daughters were born and reared.
Four of the children were at his home when he died. One son, W. [illiam] C.
[hauncey] Burge of Albia, and one
daughter, Mrs. Mattie McGee of
Rapid City, S. D., could not be present. Two sisters survive, one in California,
and Mrs. Mary De Long, with
whom he made his home in Conway since the death of his wife in1909.
More than fifty years
ago Mr. Burge united with the
Baptist church and was one of the charter members of the Gravity church, having
done much toward the building of the present house of worship. Besides the
sisters and sons and daughters, eighteen grandchildren survive.

Burge was born in Licking county,
Ohio, Jan. 16, 1829, and died at his home in Conway, March 29, 1912.
At the age of 2 years
his parents removed to Illinois and 7 years later to Iowa, settling in Henry
County. In 1849 he was married to Elizabeth Roudybush, from which union two children were born, both of
whom are dead, one dying in infancy, the same year of the death of the mother,
1855.
Mr. Burge remarried in 1856, to Miss Ellen Morewood and from this marriage six children were born,
all of whom are living. He removed to Taylor county in 1857, settling in what
is now Washington township, and Taylor county has been his home ever since,
with the exception of a short time spent in Texas and Missouri.
Fifty years ago he
united with the Baptist church and has always lived a consistent Christian life.
He
is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mattie McGee, of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Mrs. Mary
DeLong, who has made her home
with him since the death of his wife in 1909. Funeral services were held in the
Presbyterian Church at Conway Sunday, conducted by Rev. Osborne of the Baptist
church at Gravity, after which the remains were interred in the Gravity
cemetery, under the auspices of the Masonic Fraternity.
