Harriett
Barchus, 89, of Grundy Center,
Iowa passed away November 7, 1998 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital,
Grundy Center of natural causes. Funeral services were held November 10 in
Grundy Center with burial in Elmwood Cemetery in Waterloo.
Harriett was born July 26, 1909 in Bedford, Iowa, the
daughter of Clark Woodyard and Fannie Woodyard (Weller). On May 14, 1938 she was united in marriage to Harold
Barchus in Bedford. After their
marriage they farmed in Southern Iowa. In 1948, they moved to Waterloo and in
1972 they moved to an acreage near Brandon, Iowa. Harold passed away in 1984 and Harriett moved to Grundy Center in 1985.
Survivors
include three daughters, Eleanor Barnes and husband Kelly of Chariton, Iowa; Dottie Freeland of Cedar Falls; and Eileen Mutch and husband Jim of Grundy
Center; brother Ralph Weller of Gravity and sister Laurie Plambeck of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold, and one sister, Ruby Woodyard.

Nadine
Deaver Besco was born to Henry
[Ernest] and Ethel [Pearl Deaver Johnston] Besco on March 16, 1924 near Platteville, Taylor
County, Iowa. She grew up in the Conway community and graduated from Conway,
Iowa Consolidated High School. She then went to school to become a telegraph
operator for Missouri-Pacific Railroad in Newport, Arkansas. She acquired a
position with Air Transport Command at Little Rock, Arkansas and was later
transferred to Air Transport Command at National Airport, Washington, D.C.
during World War II.
Nadine was married to Gene P. [aul] Becherer on March 17,1946 and settled in Hastings,
Nebraska where she and Gene were employed. To this union were born three sons, Larry and Steven of Omaha and Dwight of Shirley, New York.
Music
and church were two of her joys. Nadine took piano lessons as a young girl and played clarinet in the school
band. Nadine was self-taught
on the Hammond Organ. She loved to play church music for her own joy and
eventually obtained a Hammond Organ of her own at home. She organized and
directed the youth choir, played the organ and sang in the choir at the
Christian Church in Lenox, Iowa. She was secretary to the Lenox, Iowa School
Board for a number of years.
In
1966 the family moved to Omaha, Nebraska. She became active in the South Side
Christian Church as a choir member and later became the organist and choir
director, a position she held for twelve years. She also served as church
secretary and typist.
Nadine worked as a bookkeeper for various grain
companies throughout the Omaha area until her retirement in 1973. In her early
years she made clothes for her family, enjoyed crocheting and in later years
had taken up ceramics as another hobby.
She
died November 25, 1998 and services were held November 30, 1998 at the Crosby
Kunold South Side Chapel in Omaha. Interment at Westlawn Hillcrest Cemetery in
Omaha, Nebraska.
Nadine leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Gene; son Larry and daughter in law Marilyn; sons Steven and Dwight; grandson Michael; step grandchildren, Carol and Irvin Carper,
Paul Victor, John and Patti Victor;
step great grandchildren, Nicole, Zach, Anna and Alicia; sister Verneil Stephens; cousin Viola Besco; two sisters in law; brother in law; numerous
nieces and nephews and friends.

Byington was born in Lee County,
Virginia, Nov. 2, 1881, and died Dec. 21, 1939 at his home in Humboldt, Kans.,
at the age of 58 years, 1 month and 18 days.
When young he went
west to seek his fortune and on Feb. 18, 1908 he was united in marriage to Georgia
Elizabeth Bradley at Bedford. To
them six children were born.
He was preceded in
death by his wife on March 21, 1919 and one child, Fraye E., who died in infancy. Also one brother, Robert
Byington, who died in March of
1918.
He is survived by
five of his children, Merrill R. Byington of Kans., Franz B. Byington of Humboldt, Kans., Dale V. Byington of Kansas City, Mo., Garland Frishenmeyer of Humboldt, Kans., and Wade R. Byington of Fort Scott, Kans. He is also survived by six
sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Byington was a member of the Modern Woodman of America,
being an active member of this organization since 1919.
Services were held in
the Wetmore Funeral Home in Bedford Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Max
Buck. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

[Andrew Eugene] and George [Georgia] Ann Robey Churchill, was born November 8, 1900 on a farm northwest of
Gravity, Iowa.
On
February 20, 1924, he was united in marriage to Nora Ellen Garrett in Bedford. To this union one daughter, Eleanor
Fayne, and one son, Glen Cecil, were born.
He
has lived on a farm the greater part of his life. Farming and his family were
his greatest interests in life.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Ora; and two sisters, Ossie [Osa] and [Edna] Maye.
Clarence is survived by his devoted companion, Nora; daughter, Eleanor and her husband; son, Glen and his wife; eight grandchildren; one sister, Hazel
Besco; a host of relatives and
friends.
He
will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Effie May Kemery, daughter of John and Mary Jane [Hoover]
Kemery, was born in Bedford,
Iowa, Feb. 26, 1871, and passed away at the Municipal hospital at Chadron,
Nebr., Dec. 12, 1935, aged 64 years, 9 months and 16 days.
At the age of 19
years she went with her parents to Dawes County, Nebr., spending the remainder
of her life there.
Feb. 26, 1891, she
was united in marriage to Lowell Goff of Dawes County, Nebr.,
moving on the land he homesteaded in 1885 where they made their home.
Mr. Goff preceded her in death April 10, 1906.
She was a beloved
mother and a sincere woman. She was a member of the Congregational church and
of the fraternal order of R. N. of A.
Five children were
born to this union, all of whom survive and mourn her death—Waldo K.
Goff, Mrs. Lillian Hayden, Mrs. Myrtle Nixon, Mrs. Mable Schumacher, and Theodore L. Goff, together with 15 grandchildren, all of Chadron
and vicinity.
She also leaves three
sisters and a brother, the Misses Rose, Anna and Vivandra and Henry Kemery of Taylor County, Iowa.
Funeral services were
held in the Chadron Congregational church, conducted by Rev. Newland. Interment
in Greenwood cemetery.

died of a heart ailment at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Services were held at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville. Burial was at the
Graceland Cemetery there.
Mrs.
Hays was born in Taylor County
and had lived in Marion County most of her life. She was a retired nurse's aide
with Knoxville Rest Home and Westridge Manor Nursing Home.
She
is survived by a brother, Dale Brown of Hartley; a sister, Opal Weese of Lenox; three grandchildren; 10 great step
grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Mrs.
Johnson was born October 11, 1934
near Kent to Verne Lloyd and Mary
Madden (Mickey) Schofield. She
attended Lincoln No. 8 country school in Ringgold County, and graduated from
Lenox High School in 1953, Immanuel Lutheran School of Nursing in Omaha,
Nebraska and University of Iowa in Iowa City. In September 1962, she married Bob
Johnson in Burlington where she
lived until moving to a convalescent home in September.
Survivors
include a daughter, Jacqueline Jean Johnson and husband Greg Wagner of Columbus Junction; a son, Bobby Dean Johnson of Iowa City; a brother, Wayne (wife Naomi)
Schofield of Banning, California; and a sister in law, Lu Schofield of Lenox.
She
was preceded in death by her father, Verne Schofield in July 1978; mother, Mary Schofield in July
1985; and a brother, Lloyd J. Schofield July 1991.

Jane Ford was born at Knowlton,
Ringgold County, Iowa, March 5, 1890, and grew to maturity in the Knowlton and
Diagonal areas where she attended elementary and high school.
On
March 7, 1909 she was united in marriage to Charles Byron Walters. They lived on a farm in the Diagonal area and
then later in Diagonal until 1924 when they moved to Bedford, Iowa. In addition
to being a homemaker she operated a ladies apparel shop in Bedford for ten
years.
To
this union three children were born: Byron Keith, Ada Fern and Herbert Lee.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles B. [yron]
in 1945, her son Keith in
1927, her grandson James Lee Walters in 1976 and by three sisters and eight brothers.
She married Thomas V.
[alentine] Lacy in 1946 and was
preceded in death by her second husband.
Her
grandchildren and great grandchildren were the special delight and love of her
life. She had four grandchildren: Janet Walters Maynes, Joan Helm Durham,
James (Jim) Walters and John
Helm; three great grandchildren: Jeffrey
Walters, Patrick Maynes and Jill Maynes.
She
was always busy working on various crafts and made so many beautiful quilts,
comforters, afghans and embroidered pieces. She was so proud of the many blue
ribbons she won on her work at the Iowa State Fairs. Each year at Christmas
time she sent a large box of stuffed animals and toys she had made to the
Children's Hospital in Iowa City for the young patients who might not receive
any Christmas gifts without outside help.
Left
to cherish her memory are: her daughter Ada Helm and her husband Loran; her son Lee Walters and his wife Mary; three grandchildren: Joan Durham, John Helm and Janet Maynes and her husband Keith, and granddaughter-in-law, Linda Walters; three great grandchildren: Jeff Walters,
Patrick and Jill Maynes and other
relatives.
She
was a life long member of the Presbyterian Church, a member of long standing in
the Rebekah Lodge, the Eastern Star and the D.A.R.
Her
family and friends will long remember her as a kind and considerate loved one
and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
The
family suggest contributions in her memory be made to the Heart Fund.

Joseph Franklin
Ledgerwood, son of Mr. and
Mrs. John L. [emon] Ledgerwood [Charity Whiteneck], was born in Sullivan County, Indiana, August 8,
1845, and departed this life at his home, in Blockton, Iowa, December 22, 1918,
aged 73 years, 4 months and 14 days.
In early childhood he
moved with his parents to Illinois, and at the age of 11 years moved to
Ringgold County, Iowa.
He was united in
marriage to Miss Mary E. [lizabeth] Miller at Bedford, this state, on January 1, 1871. To this union there were
born nine children: Mrs. E. W. Mesler, Diagonal; Mrs. C. E. Spooner [Jessie], St. Joseph, Mo.; Pearl P., Blockton; June N., who died in infancy; John H., Rockwell; Mrs. George Carlson [Charity], Blockton; Mrs, Chas. E. Huntley [Mary], Blockton; Joseph F., Blockton; Luther B., Durant. All were present at the bedside except
one daughter, Mrs. E. W. Mesler.
The only brother, J. [ohn] W. [esley] Ledgerwood, of Gravity, was also present.
At the age of 14
years he united with the Church of Christ. He lived a consistent and faithful
life until his departure, never losing his faith in God.
He was a member of
Co. E, 46th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War from May to
September 1865.
He was a loving
husband and a devoted father. He resided in Ringgold and Taylor counties for
sixty-two years. Since 1906 he has been a resident of Blockton.
The funeral services
were held at the home Tuesday, December 24, and interment was made in Rose Hill
cemetery.

Effie Roberts of Bedford were
held at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home on State Street, Wednesday afternoon,
Jan. 24. Rev. Colvin Caughey of the Baptist church officiated. Burial in Old
Memory cemetery at New Market.
Effie Tena Parker, daughter of Elijah and Carrie Parker, was born near New Market, Iowa, Oct. 16, 1876,
and died at Municipal hospital, Clarinda, on Jan. 22 at the age of 85 years,
three months, six days.
On June 25, 1902 she
was united in marriage to Ward Roberts and to them were born four sons. They lived a short time in Shelby
County, at New Market and Clarinda, and then moved to a farm west of Bedford.
In 1929 they moved into Bedford, where she lived the remainder of her life.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; by her husband, who died in 1938; and by three infant
sons. She is survived by one son, Ward Roberts and his wife of Moorland, Iowa.
Mrs. Roberts was a member of the First Baptist church in New
Market for many years. She was also a member of New Market chapter of the Order
of the Eastern Star and recently received her 50-year pin from that
organization.

Salyards, 90, of Gravity died
Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Rosary hospital, Corning, where he had been a patient a
short time. Mr. Salyards is a
long-time resident of Gravity and Taylor County.
Funeral services were
held at the Christian church in Gravity, Friday afternoon with Preacher
Clarence Potter of New Market officiating. Burial in Washington cemetery at
Gravity.
James H. Salyards, son of Adam B. and Harriett Helmick Salyards, was born March 19, 1871 in Marion County, Iowa.
He moved with his parents to Taylor County when a small boy and grew to manhood
in the New Market neighborhood.
He was married to Eudora
Cooper Cade in 1899, and she
preceded him in death June 21, 1950. One son, Haven J. Salyards was born to this union. There were three other
children reared in the home: a step-son, Carl Cade at New Market; two nieces, Mrs. Grace Thomas and Mrs. Mabel Greenway, both of whom preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn
his passing his son, Haven and
wife of Glenwood, Iowa; a grandson and wife, and three great grandchildren of
Odessa, Texas; a half brother, Jay Squires of Clarinda; a half brother’s widow of Villisca; his step-son, Carl
Cade and wife, three
step-grandchildren, nine great step-grandchildren; his nephew, Edward Thomas and family of Corning, where he has made his home

Sarah Jane Walter were held Feb.

Archie Young, 54, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Young of Bedford, died Saturday night, Feb. 3 at a
hospital in Smithville, Mo., after a brief illness.
Funeral services were
held at two p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Antioch chapel in Kansas City with burial
in White Chapel Memorial Gardens there.
Young had been a linotype operator, working in Bedford
and Maryville before going into service in World War II, later working in St.
Joseph and Kansas City. He had been employed by the Kansas City Star the past 12 years.
Survivors
are his widow, Mrs. Hazel Young,
of the home; two daughters, Miss Vickie Young of the home, Mrs. Frank Wilmes of Gladstone, Mo.; two sons, Terry M. Young of King City, Jack Y. Young of Pinole, Calif.; two brothers, Wilbur Young of Bedford, Marion Young of Council Bluffs; a sister, Mrs. Harry
Struble of Council Bluffs; his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Young of Bedford; and four grandchildren.
