Raymond Bridgewater Final Rites Held Dec. 16 in Hopkins
Funeral
services for Raymond Bridgewater,
73, of Hopkins, Mo., held December 16 in the Baptist Church, Hopkins, were conducted
by Rev. Wayne Foster. Mr. Bridgewater died December 13, 1983 in the Missouri Methodist Hospital in St.
Joseph, Mo. Interment was at the Hopkins Cemetery.
Raymond
Bridgewater, son of Jonathan
and Sarah Bridgewater, was born
in Colorado [in] 1910. He had lived most of his life in the Bedford and Hopkins
area. He was a graduate of Hopkins High School. He was a farmer and
construction operator.
Raymond
and Freda (Noles) whom he married
March 26, 1933 celebrated their 50th anniversary March 26, 1983.
To
this union three children were born: Mary Jane Adams, Gladstone; John Raymond Bridgewater, Hopkins; Betty Ann Noble. They lived in Taylor County.
He
was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister, Stella Kinsey, brother, Roy Bridgewater and daughter, Betty Ann Noble.
Left
to cherish his memory are his wife, Freda; Mrs. John (Mary Jane) Adams; son, John Raymond Bridgewater; grandchildren: Jay, Marcy, Eric Adams and Doug and Jason Noble; sister, Mrs. Marie Eker, Portland, Ore.; brother, Ivan Bridgewater, Hopkins.
He
was a kind and considerate father and will be missed by all who knew him,
including many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mary Britt of Hopkins died at St.
Francis hospital, Maryville, May 12 at the age of 62 years, two months, 16
days.
Funeral
services were held at Shum Funeral Home. Friday afternoon, May 14, conducted by
Rev. Robt. M. Peters. Burial in Gravity cemetery.
Mary
Isabel Kirby, youngest daughter
of William Wesley Kirby and Anna
Mary Cree, was born near
Clarinda, Iowa, Feb. 26, 1892.
When
eight years of age she moved with her parents to a farm near Gravity, where she
grew to womanhood and was married to Franklin G. Shanks on Dec. 2, 1914. To them four children were born,
three girls and one boy: Anna Mae, Carroll Lee, Dorothy Verlene and Doris Evelyn. The husband and father, Frank Shanks, died Dec. 11, 1931.
On
Feb. 23, 1933 she was married to Floyd Britt.
In
June 1944 they moved with their family to Waterloo, Iowa, where they made their
home until February 1953, when they located at Hopkins.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Shanks; by her parents, Wesley and Anna Kirby; and by one brother, Earl E. [dward].
Surviving
are: one sister, Eva Akers of
Lenox; two brothers: Lawrence Kirby of Lenox; Guy Kirby of
Brighton, Colo.; her husband, Floyd Britt; four children: Anna
Mae Cool of Gila Bend, Ariz., Carroll

large procession followed the remains of Mrs. W. E. Ginn [Sadie Ginn] to the grave Tuesday.
Mrs.
W. E. Ginn [Sadie Ginn] of Conway died with paralysis Monday morning at
4 o'clock. The funeral services was held at the Christian church at 2 o'clock
Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Ginn has been suffering for some years with paralysis.

Horace Ginn [Rilda Elizabeth
Cree] of Gravity received word
Saturday that her son, Thomas [Daniel] Ginn, 23, was killed on May 29, “somewhere in the North
American theatre of war." He had been in the armed forces since March 1942
and was home on furlough last fall, called by the death of his father, who
operated a farm near Gravity.
The
last letter Mrs. Ginn had
received from her son was on May 26, when he sailed from Seattle, Washington,
with an infantry unit. Before leaving the States he was stationed in an army
camp in California, and later in Washington.

Ginn Body Being Sent From Alaska
The
body of the late Pfc. Thomas D. [aniel] Ginn, being returned from the Alaskan Zone aboard the
U. S. Army Transport Honda Knot, scheduled to reach San Francisco about
September 3, will be forwarded at a later date through the American Graves
Registration Distribution Center in Kansas City, Missouri to Bedford, the final
destination requested by his mother, Mrs. Rilda E. [lizabeth Cree] Ginn of
Gravity.
From
the Distribution Center to the final destination, the remains are accompanied
by individual escort. The Shum Funeral Home of Bedford will be in charge of the
last rites.

where he made the supreme sacrifice, at the Island of Attu, in the Aleutian
Islands.

Thomas was an active member of the Gravity Methodist
church. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Baptist church at Plano, Iowa, delivered the memorial address. He was assisted
in the service by Rev. J. W. Weber, pastor of the Gravity Methodist church and
the American Legion.

THOMAS DANIEL GINN
The
body of Thomas D. [aniel] Ginn,
who lost his life in service of his country during the late war, was brought
from the Aleutian Islands to Kansas City, and from there was sent here for
final interment. The military Memorial service was held Monday afternoon and
was in charge of the local American Legion Post.

here, and the American Legion.
The
casket bearers were: Leo O'Grady, Drexel Keith, Kenneth Farrens, Lewis Walker,
Elvin Beemer, Bill Boyer. The music was by Mrs. Vera Gold and Mrs. Frank Bordner,
with Mrs. Harry Burmeister piano accompanist.
The
body was taken to the Gravity cemetery where it was placed in its last resting
place with the usual military honors conducted by the American Legion.
John Neil and family of Ellsworth, Iowa, attended the
memorial service for the late Thomas Ginn, Monday, and spent the night at the Rilda Ginn home.

Surviving
with her children are, twenty-one grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and
one sister, Mrs. Ollie E. Pfander of
Sharpsburg. Her father, mother and brother, Daniel [Robert] Cree preceded her in death.
She
was a member of the Christian church for many years and lived a faithful
Christian life to the end. She spent most of her life in Iowa except a few
years in Nebraska and Colorado. The last six years were spent in the home of
her four children who live in Iowa. She had been an invalid the past three
years.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, April 14 at the Christian church in Gravity and
burial was in the Gravity cemetery.

Anna
Mary Cree, daughter of Robert
and Mary [Piper] Cree, was born
November 11, 1862, at Alpha, Illinois, and passed away April 11, 1940, at the
home of her son, Lawrence Kirby,
near Sharpsburg, Iowa, at the age of 77 years, 9 months.
She
came with her parents when a small child to Page county, Iowa, where she grew

She
was united in marriage on February 12, 1885, to William Wesley Kirby. To this union were born five children: Earl
E. [dward] of Blockton, Mrs. Eva M. [ay] Akers of Gravity, Mrs. Mary I. [sable] Britt of New Market, Lawrence C. [lyde]
of Sharpsburg and Guy H. [arold] of
Johnstown, Colorado, —all of whom are living. All were at her bedside at
the time of her passing except her youngest son, Guy, who came later. She leaves, beside her children,
twenty-one grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs.
Ollie E. Pfander of Sharpsburg,
and a host of other relatives and friends. Her father, mother, and brother, Daniel
[Robert] Cree, preceded her in
death.
She
was a member of the Christian church for many years and lived a faithful
Christian life to the end.
She
spent most of her life in Iowa except a few years, which was spent in Nebraska
and Colorado. The last six years of her life was spent in the homes of her four
children, who live in Iowa. Being an invalid the past three years, her children
cared for her through her suffering and affliction, which she bore patiently.
The whole community of friends and neighbors who through the years had learned
to love her dearly for her sterling Christian character will greatly miss her
happy, good cheer and mourn her departure.
Few
ever leave a richer heritage of fidelity and constant, kindly service to all
her children, who will rise up to call her blessed.
Funeral
service was held Sunday at the Christian church and burial was at the Gravity
cemetery. Her pallbearers were her grandsons, and her granddaughters the flower
girls.

services for Mrs. J. [ohn] H. [erbert] (Neva Oma) Lawrence, 84, of Bedford, were held December 17 in Shum-Novinger
Funeral Home here officiated by Rev. Roger Charley and Rev. Mark Imel.
Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa.

Oma Lawrence, daughter of E. [manuel]
W. [ilkinson] and Iniss [May] Carpenter Perdew, was born November 17, 1899 in Washington
Township in Taylor County Iowa. She grew up and went to school in Taylor
County, Iowa. She later attended Iowa University for two years (1926-1927)
majoring in piano and voice.
She
was married to J. [ohn] H. [erbert] Lawrence on January 20, 1937 at Atlantic, Iowa and they
made their home on the Lawrence family home near Portsmouth, Iowa for several
years and then moved to Harlan, Iowa where they lived until her husband's death
in November of 1971. Later she moved back to a home in Bedford. Five years ago
she fell and broke her hip and knee and has been a resident at the nursing home
since.
She
was a member of the Gravity Christian Church since 1923 and was a faithful
member ever since until her health failed her.
She
was a cheerful and patient person to the last.
She
was preceded in death by her husband J. [ohn] H. [erbert] Lawrence, two brothers: Wilber C. Perdew in 1920 and Charles E. [dgar] Perdew in 1967.
She
is survived by a sister, Vera Brown of Gravity; nephews, Howard Perdew and wife Lola of Bedford,
Iowa; Leonard Perdew and wife Marie and family of Conway, Iowa; Robert
Perdew and wife Joann and family of Boulder, Colorado; and other nieces
and nephews.
She
will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral
services for Ira Daniel Pfander,
93, of 605 N. Cedar, Creston, Ia., were held Dec. 20 in Keating-Lindsay Funeral

officiating. Mr. Pfander died
in his home in Creston December 16, 1983. Interment was at Washington Cemetery,

20, 1890 in Page County north of Clarinda. He was the son of William Henry
Pfander and Olpha E. [leanor]
Cree.
He
was married to Lulu Pearl Clark in Sharpsburg December 20, 1911.
A
farmer and a carpenter, he had lived in Union County since 1951. He was a
member of the Sharpsburg Methodist Church and was active in bowling for several
years.
Mr.
Pfander was preceded in death by
his parents, an infant daughter, a grandson, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law,
four sisters and a brother.

Mrs.
W. [illiam] H. [enry] Pfander, a
resident of the Sharpsburg community for many years, died at her home Sunday,
August 4.
Funeral
services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg Tuesday afternoon,
August 6, conducted by Rev. Donald Gibson pastor of the church. Burial was in
Washington cemetery at Gravity.
Olepha
[Olpha] Eleanor Cree, daughter of Robert E. and Mary [Elizabeth] Piper Cree, was born April 27, 1868, at Alpha, Ill., and died at the age of 89
years, three months, eight days.
When
she was a small child, she moved with her parents to Page County, locating
north and west of and Clarinda, where she grew to womanhood.
She
was married to William Henry Pfander on August 25, 1887, at Mt. Etna, Iowa. Had she lived until August
25, they would have been married 70 years. They were the parents of eight
children.
In
1903 she moved to Taylor County, locating 2 1/2 miles west of Sharpsburg, where
she lived the remainder of her life.
She
was a member of Rose Hill church and later became a member of the Presbyterian
Church at Sharpsburg.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Rilla Ann and Hattie Vena [Vera]; one sister, Anna [Mary] Kirby; one brother, Daniel [Robert] Cree; a sister and brother who died in infancy.
She
leaves to mourn her passing, her husband; three sons, Ira D. [aniel] of Creston, Cloyd W. [illiam] of Gravity, Burl J. [oseph] of Corning; three daughters, Grace E. [lizabeth]

R. M. Piner
Caroline
Piner, daughter of Robert and
Sarah [Tester] Bye, was born near
Newark, New Jersey, June 7, 1850; died at her home in Clearfield, Iowa, April
1,1923, aged 72 years 9 months and 24 days. At the age of six years she moved
with her parents to Illinois, living first in Fulton, then in Knox County.
She
was united in marriage to Robert Piner on Dec. 24, 1872. To them were born six children — Roberta,
Henry, Charles, Mabel, Mattie and Mary. Henry and Charles passed
away in childhood, Roberta in
1894. In August of 1875 they came to Taylor County locating on a farm six miles
south of Clearfield, where they lived until 1897, coming then to Clearfield to
give the children the advantage of a good school, but Mattie and Mabel were victims of the diphtheria epidemic in 1899, and passed away
within a few days of each other, leaving only one child, Mary. Mr. Piner died in March of 1906.
Mrs.
Piner was a member of the
Methodist Church, and lived a beautiful Christian life. For several years she
has been practically an invalid. She leaves to mourn her loss her daughter Mary, who has cared so tenderly and faithfully for
her; her nephew, E. V. Messler,
who for eighteen years has made his home with them, and has been to her all
that a son could be; two grandchildren, P. R. Ryan and Mrs. Mary Seth of Minnesota; six great grand children; a number
of nieces and nephews and many friends.
The
funeral services were held at the residence on the afternoon of Tuesday, April
3d. The Pastor, Rev. Calkins, spoke from portions of the 90th and 91st Psalms.
Interment was made in Clearfield Cemetery, where she lies at rest by the
husband and children gone before.

Charles Rascher Dies At Clarinda
Funeral
services for Charles C. [hristopher] Rascher, 64, a resident of Taylor and Adams counties
nearly all of his life, were held at the Christian church in Gravity Sunday
afternoon, May 26, conducted by Rev. Ray Cornwall, pastor of the Presbyterian
church in Cromwell. Mr. Rascher died Thursday, May 23, at the state hospital in Clarinda. Burial was in the
Gravity cemetery.

Christopher Rascher was born Oct.
28, 1870, in Black Hawk County, Ill. At the age of four years he moved with his
parents to Taylor County, near Gravity, where he resided until twenty years
ago, when he moved to Nodaway to make his home with his brother, Fred
Rascher.
Surviving
relatives are two brothers and six sisters. They are Fred Rascher of Nodaway, W. [illiam] A. [ndrew] Rascher of Gravity, Mrs. Will Chitty and Mrs. Frank Chitty of Sharpsburg, Mrs. Charles Welch and Miss

He

Detroit Mich., Saturday, May 25, of Bright's Disease. The body was brought to
Clearfield Tuesday, May 28, and the funeral services were held at the Methodist
church Wednesday, conducted by Rev. J. C. Turner, assisted by Rev. H. B.
Hutchman. Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.
Freda
Jeanette Williams, daughter of Howard
and Pauline Clute Williams, was
born in Clearfield August 6, 1930. She was taken ill while visiting in
Clearfield about ten months ago.
Surviving
relatives are the parents, a sister, Phyllis Ann Williams; the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clute; and the foster grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Alpha Clark.

T. T. Young, 73, Dies at St Joseph
T.
[homas] T. [ownsend] Young, 73, a
resident of the Sharpsburg community for many years, died in a St. Joseph
hospital Friday, May 31.
He
was born in Shelbyville, Ill., July 17, 1861. When fourteen years of age he
moved with his parents to Eldorado Springs, Mo. Oct. 25, 1880 he was married to Senia Jane Elder and resided
near Eldorado Springs until 1919 when he moved to his farm home near
Sharpsburg, Iowa.
Surviving
relatives are his wife, two sons, three daughters. The children are F.[rank]
H. Young of Corning, W. [illiam]
E. Young of Lenox, Mrs. Roxie
Elliston of Von Alstyne, Texas, Mrs.
Bertha Costin of Sharpsburg and Mrs.
Tura Williams of Lenox. There are
also nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, his aged mother in Garwood,
Texas, two brothers, P. [hinas] P. [inkney] Young of Bartlesville, Okla., and J. [ohn] L. [eslie]
Young of Garwood, Texas and one
sister, Mrs. Minnie Boyer of
Nowata, Okla.
A son, Glen Young, preceded his father in death last April. Mr.
Young was a member of the
Christian church.
