DEATH OF An OLD SETTLER

obituary of Daniel R. [ice] Pace,
who died at his home in Mason Township, on March 8, 1896, after a long and
severe illness.
Mr.

1855 and settled on the premises where they lived a happy and contented life up
to the day of his death. Mr. Pace was an industrious farmer, an honorable citizen, and a success financially.
Though trouble and sorrow overshadowed their home at times, both these aged
people bore their grief with remarkable fortitude.

An Old Settler Gone
Sunday
morning about nine o'clock marked the passing of one of Taylor County’s oldest
settlers when John [Wesley] Pace was gathered to his father's mansion.
Deceased
came to Taylor County with his parents in 1855 and las been a continuous
resident from that time.
He
endured all the hardships of the early settlers, but with dogged determination
he stuck to the county and by his perseverance and industry he accumulated 220
acres of fine Taylor county land, and it was at his home on this land that the
death angel called him.
John
[Wesley] Pace was one of the
substantial and influential men of his community for many years, but failing
health during the past few years has compelled him to withdraw from public
activities. But his works will live long in the memory of all who knew him.
He
was a lifelong Mason, being charter member of the New Market lodge, and the
rites at the grave were conducted by his Masonic brethren.
John
[Wesley] Pace was born in Orange
County, Ind., Nov. 29, 1847 and died at his home three miles southeast of New
Market, Sept. 7,1924, aged 76 years, 9 months and 8 days. He had been in poor
health for several years and about ten days ago he was taken seriously ill and
gradually grew worse until the end came as stated above.
At
the age of eight years he came to this county with his parents, and here he
spent his life. On Dec. 23, 1866 he was united in marriage to Hester [Ann
Lashbrook] Allen. To this union
five children were born, three of whom have passed away.
Those
living are D. [aniel] B. [oone] of New Market, and Emmett R. of Centerville. The wife and mother passed away
Nov. 5, 1875.
He
was again married on May 5, 1877, to Sarah E. [lizabeth] Johnson. No children were born of this union. She died
Nov. 16, 1887.
On
April 9, 1890 he was married Ellen J. [Davidson] Foster. Two sons were born to this union, Tony I. [van]
and Guy A. [mos] both of whom were with the father when the end
came. Deceased was a good citizen, a loving husband and indulgent father. He
will be sadly missed in the community of which he was a part for many years, as
well as in the home circle.
He
leaves to mourn their loss, the devoted wife, four sons, two stepsons, Fred
Foster of Kansas City, and Harmon
Allen of Bedford, twenty-three
grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, besides a host of friends.
He
was of a family of thirteen children, 9 brothers and 4 sisters of whom five
brothers are still living and two sisters.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Baptist church, conducted by a life
long friend, Rev. E. B. Osborne. Interment was in Memory cemetery.
