58, of Bedford, were held Sunday at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here conducted
by Mr. Carl Cummings. Mr. Allen died June 6, 1969. Interment was in Brethren Cemetery west of Sheridan, Mo.

and Senora Allen at Sheridan,
Mo., November 17, 1919.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

sisters, Mrs. Clyde Lernick,
Wendell, Idaho, Mrs. Mae Miller,
St. Joseph, Mo., Mrs. Nick Pollock,
Chicago, Mrs. Jack Dull,
Oakland, Calif., Mrs. Nancy Calvin,
Harrisburg, Mo.; a number of nieces and nephews.
He
will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

California on May 3, 1986, at the age of 54 years.

is survived by his mother, Estelle Brown of Wenatchee, Washington and two sisters, Joyce Keeley of Malaga, Washington and Mardelle Brownlee of Santa Barbara, California.

services were held for Hazel Frances Brown on May 18 at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home. Burial was at the

Frances Mohler Brown, daughter of John F. [ranklin] Mohler and
Sarah [Jane] King Mohler was born
at Bedford, Iowa December 15, 1892 and departed this life May 16, 1986 at
Bedford Manor in Bedford at the age of 93 years five months and one day.
She
grew to maturity in the Bedford area where she attended the public school and
the Presbyterian Church.
On
March 11, 1914 she was united in marriage to William Glenn Brown at the home of the bride's parents and they lived
on farms in Taylor County until they moved to Bedford in 1964. After her
husband passed away she lived in Atlantic, Iowa until August 1983 she moved to
Bedford Manor where she had continued to reside.
Two
children were born to this union: Francis and Julia.
She
taught rural school prior to her marriage and was engaged as a housewife and
homemaker for her family.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband [William] Glenn Brown who died March 9, 1977; a sister Hallie Helen
Laub; a brother, John Harold
Mohler and a grandson, Gordon
Lee Brown.
Left
to cherish her memory are her son, Francis Brown and his wife Hazel of Bedford, Iowa; daughter, Julia L. McNees and her husband Russell McNees of Atlantic, Iowa; eight grandchildren; thirteen
great grandchildren and one great great grandson; a niece and other relatives
and friends.
She
was a member of the Presbyterian Church and had been active as a 4-H leader; a
member of the Farm Bureau Women; American Angus Auxiliary; U.T.D. Club and
Marshall Social Club.
She
will be remembered as a kind and loving mother, friend and neighbor and she
will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Gus Childs, a former resident of
Bedford, died at her home in Bridgeport, Nebr., Sunday, March 4. She is
survived by two children, both of whom are married. Mrs. Childs was formerly Miss Mona [Martha] Farlow. Mr.
[Augustine Barker] Childs, who
died several years ago, was a former resident of Lenox.

lingering illness.

14, 1921, near Bedford, Iowa. He attended grade schools in Taylor County and
was graduated from Bedford High School in 1940.
He
was married to Marthalene Schildknecht in July 1942. To this union one daughter was born.
He
enlisted in the Navy Dec. 12, 1942 and served three years in the Seabees. After
returning from the service he had resided in Long Beach, Calif.
He
is survived by his wife, Marthalene,
daughter, Denise Enos; two
granddaughters, Rebecca and Nancy;
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Dowis of Bedford; a sister, Mrs. Bonnie J. Meek of Villisca, Iowa; a brother, James L.[ee]
Dowis of Garden Grove, Calif.;
other relatives and a host of friends.
A
tribute by a friend: I consider Bob one of the finest friends and one of the truest gentlemen I have ever
known. His friendly way and smile will always be remembered.

Jemima [Goodwin] Lewis died
Wednesday morning at 6 a. m., and was buried from the home on Thursday, Rev.
Horace Siberell officiating.
Her
husband, Wm. Lewis, died in
1858, since which time deceased has lived a widow. Of eight children only four
survive the deceased. Two sisters, Mrs. Martha [Goodwin] Webb and Mrs. Lydia [Goodwin] Farlow, also survive her, and were at the funeral. The
deceased had been a member of the Christian church for more than forty years
and was aged 76 years, 9 months and 24 days.

Ella Sleep Marshall, daughter of Albert
Sleep and Mattie Weingarth Sleep was
born near Siam in Taylor County Iowa on November 17, 1899 and departed this
life May 11, 1986 at the Vista Gardens in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 86 years,
4 months and 24 days.
She
moved with her family to Bedford where she attended the public school and the
Christian Church.
On
February 5, 1919 she was united in marriage to Homer [Edgar] Marshall and they lived on a farm in rural Taylor County
prior to moving to Bedford. Her husband Homer Marshall passed away in 1969 and she moved to Red Oak,
Iowa in 1976.
To
this union eight children were born: Harold, Frank, Robert, Herbert, Joan,
Martha, Richard and James.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Bertha Sleep who died in infancy and Alma Sleep Bales.

to cherish her memory are her children: Harold Marshall and his wife Thelma of Chicago, Illinois; Frank Marshall and his wife Val of Addison, Illinois; Robert D. entire life in Taylor County. He farmed the first 10 years of his married life
and then moved to town where he was employed by the County for about 25 years
until his retirement three years ago.
He
was a wonderful and loving father, a devoted husband, a kind neighbor, a friend
of many. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He
lived with his parents at Gravity and when he was five years old they moved to
Grant City, Missouri where they resided until he was fifteen years old when
they moved to a farm east of Bedford. He attended the public school and the
East Mission Church.
On
August 19, 1915 he was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Chilcote at the home of Rev. U. E. Burroughs. They lived
in Conway, Iowa until they moved to Bedford in 1937 where they have since
resided. To this union nine children were born: five sons, Francis [Elmer],
Donald, Charles, Merle and Earle and four daughters, [Ellen] Merine,
[Harriet] Maxine, Catherine and Mary Etta.
He
was employed by Taylor County Bridge Construction Department and Cudahy Packing
Company.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; three children: Francis, Maxine and
Merine Pauley; a grandson, Allan; two brothers: William and Homer; and four sisters: Olive Ferguson, Belva Marshall, Mable Layman
and Pearl Marshall.

February 23 in Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, Ia. Interment was at Fairview
Cemetery, Bedford.

Catherine Chilcote, daughter of David
E. [lmer] Chilcote and Harriett Luella Parks Chilcote, was born April 8, 1896 in Conway, Taylor County,
Iowa.
She
grew to maturity in the Conway community where she attended the public school
and the Methodist Church. She was graduated from Conway High School in 1914.
Two of the three members of her class remain, they are Mary Harris and Sue
Smith.
On
August 19, 1915 she was united in marriage to Leon Marshall at the home of Rev. U. E. Burroughs, minister of
the East Mission Baptist Church. They lived in Conway until moving lo Bedford
in 1937 where she had continued to reside. She was a member of the United
Methodist Church.
To
this union nine children were born, five sons and four daughters.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leon Marshall, who died April 1, 1981; three children: Francis
E. Marshall, Merine Pauley and Maxine
Marshall; a grandson, Allan
Marshall; four sisters: Etta
Mefford, Beulah Walker, Edna Thomas and Grace Chancellor.

Thursday forenoon that their daughter, Mrs. Alva [Holland] Moats [Olive], of near New Market, was seriously ill with
pneumonia. They left for New Market on the first train but received word before
they left that their daughter had passed away at noon. The funeral services
were held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock. Mrs. Moats leaves besides her husband and parents, a son [Ernest] about 15 years of age. The sympathy of the
community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Reeves who have been called upon to give up their only two children, Mrs.
Thos. A. [saph] Ware [Myra] and Mrs. Moats [Olive], within the last year.

Jennie Pace, 88, died at her home
in New Market Tuesday, June 21, after having been an invalid for several years.

funeral services were held at the home this (Thursday) afternoon and burial was
in Memory cemetery.

Pace is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cora Abbott of New

Bedell was born Nov. 3, 1884 at
Chetopa, Kans., being one of a family of six children, three girls and three
boys.
She
was married April 14, 1908 at Parsons, Kans., to Dr. Karl B. [ean] Paschal of Bedford. To them was born one daughter, Marian.
Surviving
with the husband and daughter are two sisters, Mrs. Susan McClung of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. Marian
Miller of Pittsburg, Kans.
Mrs.
Paschal was a Past Matron of the
Order of Eastern Star, a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and for several years
a member of the Library Board. She was also a member of the Presbyterian Church
and played the pipe organ there for twelve years.
The
funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Friday afternoon
conducted by Rev. Stanley Schlick. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery.

Alvin Smith, 72, son of Henry A. Smith and Nettie May Ely Smith,
was born September 25, 1914, in Harrison County near Eagleville, Mo., and
passed away Wednesday, May 14, 1986, at his home in Villisca, Iowa.
He
attended a rural school in Harrison County, Mo., then was a resident of the
Guss community for 12 years, near Nodaway for 5-6 years, south of Red Oak for
five years, then retired in Villisca for the last 13 years. He had farmed all
his life.
Roy was married to Laverna Bernice Gibson on January 16, 1937, at Glenwood, Iowa.
He
is survived by his wife, Laverna,
one brother, Keith Smith of
Kellerton, Ia.; one sister, Leola Trower of Mt. Ayr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and
Nettie Smith; three brothers; one
sister; and one daughter.
