[Alice Ambrose]

Alice [word not clear] Ambrose, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wade Ambrose of Gravity, died Monday, January 3, in a Creston hospital, a few hours after birth.  The body was brought to Gravity where burial was made on Tuesday forenoon.  The father is in the armed forces.

Ray McMullin, 80

Last Rites Held June 12

Funeral services for Raymond Elder McMullin, 80, of Bedford, were held June 12, at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford conducted by Carl Cummings.  Mr. McMullin died June 10, 1975 at Municipal Hospital in Clarinda.  Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Raymond Elder McMullin, son of James and Hulda Gifford McMullin, was born February 23, 1895, in Page County, Iowa.  He grew to manhood in the community where he was born; attending the Page County Schools.

On December 23, 1915, he was united in marriage to Mae Elizabeth Hulse.  To this union two children were born: Lela, who died in infancy and Norma Marie who died at the age of nine years in April, 1936.

He spent the early part of his life on farms in Page and Taylor Counties, later moving to Bedford where he operated a filling station and was employed as a carpenter for several years.  In later years he operated a taxi business and he enjoyed helping people and his many friends.  Of special interest was helping people go to decorate on Memorial Day; and until this year due to ill health he had never missed since 1917. 

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mae Elizabeth, who died in 1958, the two daughters, a brother, Robert, and a sister, Bertha O'Dell.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a sister, Ruby Avey, of Bedford; brothers, Ora, of Bedford, and William, of St. Joseph, Mo.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.

He was a member of the Bedford Fire Department for 32 years and was an active fireman as long as health permitted.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Orie L. Thompson Rites Held Aug. 12

Funeral services for Orie L. Thompson were held on August 12 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda with Rev. John Clark officiating and a Masonic Service presented by the Masonic Lodge.  Interment was in Memory Cemetery near New Market.

Orie L. Thompson, son of Richard F. and Elizabeth Jane Farrell Thompson, was born December 19, 1888, in Taylor County.  He lived his entire life in Page and Taylor Counties.

On December 2, 1908 he was united in marriage to Grace Ray.

His occupations were farming, railroad work and construction work.

He had been a member of the Plumb Lodge of Siam for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters.

One sister, Olive Dougherty, of New Market, nieces and nephews survive.

He was a kind and helpful neighbor and will be missed by those who knew him.

Bruce Mason, 80

Final Rites Held August 29

Funeral services for Bruce Clifton Mason, 80, of New Market, a lifelong resident of Taylor County, were held August 29 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford.  Mr. Mason died August 26, 1975, at Clarinda's Municipal Hospital.  New Market American Legion Post No. 300 presented military honors at Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Bruce Clifton Mason, son of Elroy and Arvilla Mason, was born at New Market, Iowa, on July 20, 1895.

He lived in Taylor County all of his life.  He graduated from New Market High School, attended business college at Quincy, Illinois, and later served as Postmaster for New Market for 14 years.

He was a member of the 337th Machine Gun Battalion, 88 Division in World War I, and a Charter Member of the American Legion Post No. 300 of New Market, Iowa.  He continued this membership for 53 years.  He was also a member of Tucker Post U. F. W. #8094.  He served on the Soldiers Relief Board of Taylor County for 30 years, and for a time was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

On August 16, 1930, he was united in marriage to Correla Nuzum at Albert Lee, Minnesota.  They lived in New Market for 10 years then they moved to their farm home near New Market.

To this union were born three children: Bruce Judson, Beverlee Sue and Rosalind JuneBruce Judson Mason is a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army and is stationed in Edgewood, Maryland.  Beverlee Sue Schletzbaum is an elementary teacher, and resides in Wichita, Kansas.  Rosalind June Swart is Vice President for Research and Development of Alpha II Inc.

Besides his immediate family, those left to cherish his memory are his two sisters: Phyllis Hill of Phoenix, Ariz., and Lois Adkins of Eureka, Calif.; six grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Howard Cooper

Howard Joseph Cooper, son of Anna and the late Joseph Cooper, was born near Clearfield, Iowa, September 4, 1902, being aged 41 years, 11 months and 7 days at the time of his death.  Most of his boyhood was spent on the farm home near Clearfield, where he attended grade school and high school, later attending the Iowa State Agricultural College at Ames.

On February 19, 1925, he was married to Maisy Walker of Clarinda.  To them three children were born, Howard Jr., who died in infancy; Betty Jo and Shirley Ann.  Fifteen years of this happy marriage were spent near Clearfield.  Four years ago they moved to a farm near Villisca, where the family now reside.

About three years ago Mr. Cooper suffered a stroke and although never fully recovered, he tried to carry on with his farm operations as best he could, and did so until about three weeks ago when he suffered a brain hemorrhage, and was taken to the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, remaining there almost a week.  He was taken home August 6 in a much improved condition, but early Monday morning was stricken with a severe cerebral hemorrhage and was taken back to the hospital.

The surviving relatives, besides his wife and two daughters, are the mother, Mrs. Anna Cooper of Clearfield; one sister, Mrs. Flossie Shore of Ames, Iowa; two brothers, S. Sgt. Frank Cooper of Fort Riley, Kansas, and Cpl. Grant Cooper of Orlando, Florida.

He was a member of the Methodist church of Villisca and of the Masonic Lodge at Conway.  He was a kind husband and father, loved his home and family, and will be greatly missed by them.
