Matilda Brown Rites Jan. 7

Funeral services for Matilda Brown, 85, long time Taylor County resident, held January 7 at State Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home, were conducted by Mr. Carl Cummings. Miss Brown died January 3, 1967 at Armstrong Rest Home in Bedford. Interment was at Platteville Cemetery.

Matilda Brown, daughter of Adna and Bertha Goodman Brown, was born May 21, 1881 near Sherrill, Iowa in Dubuque county. When she was a small child the family moved to Taylor County and purchased a farm in Gay Township and here she resided with the family.

She attended the Gay Center School and was a part of the community activities as long as health would permit. She was a member of one of of the pioneer families and travel conditions were limited so the Gay Center School house was also used as a church in the early day and the Methodist minister would conduct regular services for this community.  She attended with her family and became a member of this church group.

The farm home she loved, and continued to make it her home with her sister, Anna, after her parents passed away. Failing health caused retirement and both Matilda and Anna had lived in Bedford the past several years. Anna Brown died July 21, 1965.

Matilda was the last member of her family. Her brother, Louis and a brother, Charlie had preceded her in death.

She was a kind and considerate person, and a friend to those about her who will cherish memories.
