Loyd Dean Osburn

Funeral services for Loyd Osburn, age 73, of Bedford, who died Tuesday, February 13, 2001, were held Saturday, February 17, 2001, at 1:00 p.m., at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Sister Mary Hettich officiating.  Interment was held at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.  Memorials can be directed to the Bedford Ambulance Service.

Loyd Dean Osburn, the son of Emmett Lloyd Osburn and Opal Marie Hunter Osburn, was born June 27, 1927, in Clayton Township, Taylor County, Iowa.  Loyd grew up attending the Willow Street County School, graduated from the Bedford High School in 1944, and attended college in Maryville for two years.  Loyd left college to be a herdsman and manager for Woodbarr Angus Farm in Illinois, showing cattle throughout the East and Midwest.  In 1949, Loyd came home to form a partnership with his parents on the family farm.  On August 26, 1950, he was united in marriage to Virginia Joanne Judy in Winterset, Iowa.  Two daughters, Judy Anne and Janie Lou, blessed this union.

In 1963 Loyd and Joanne purchased the family farm from Loyd's parents.  Together they worked the fields and raised Angus cattle.  Both daughters and parents showed cattle in many shows and state fairs.  Loyd also served in local and state Angus associations.  Always civic minded, Loyd and Joanne were active in their church and various community organizations.  They always wanted to see Bedford evolve and prosper.  In 1975 Loyd was injured while selling cattle at the Page County Angus Association Sale.  This injury necessitated the end of their farming career, thus ending the fifth oldest continuous family-owned Angus herd in the United States.  In 1976 they moved to Bedford.  They had an antique business and enjoyed re-furnishing antiques.  Joanne was employed at the Bedford Times-Press.

Loyd is survived by his wife, Joanne of Bedford; two daughters, Judy Beemer and husband, Chris of Arkansas City, Kansas; and Janie Lemke and husband, Henry of Wellman; a brother, Paul Osburn and wife, Esther of Clinton; a sister, Louise Weir and husband, Guy, of Bedford; four grandchildren, Leslie Lemke Adams and husband, Skip of Wellman; Christa Anne Beemer of Kirksville, Missouri; Andrea Lemke Farrier and husband, Mark of Kalona; and Christopher Judson Beemer of Arkansas City, Kansas; and one great granddaughter, Rachel Ann Farrier.

Preceding Loyd in death are his parents, Emmett and Opal, a brother, Horace at infancy; and a sister, Anita Russell.

Always there to help someone in need, Loyd and Joanne shared a lifetime together.  To quote Loyd, "We've loved each other, our families, our neighbors, and God, and this has made our life together an exciting adventure."  Loyd will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire community.
