[Bertha
Frances Phillips Wood] Bedford Times-Press Thursday October 9, 1952 [p. 1] Mrs. Bob Wood Rites In California Mrs.
Bertha Frances Wood, 39,
a native of Iowa, died Sept. 27 of natural causes in her San Pablo,
Calif. home. A
resident of California for three months, Mrs. Wood was a member of the
Methodist church of Idaho Springs, Colo., and a member of the Order
of Eastern Star. Beside
her husband, Cledith Robert Wood,
she is survived by a son, David Montel Wood; her mother, Mrs. Millisa Phillips of Conway; brothers William, Rollie and Howard Phillips, Iowa, Oregon and San Pablo; sisters, Mrs. Myrtle
Morgan of Iowa, Mrs.
Bulah Jones of Conway,
Mrs. Elizabeth Chaney
and Mrs. Stella Houck,
Colorado and South Dakota. Funeral
services were held at the Wilson and Kintzer Chapel of Mission Bells,
San Pablo, Friday, Oct. 3 and burial was made there. Bedford Times-Press Thursday July 12, 1973 p. 9 Last Rites Held

87 Funeral
services for Mrs. Walter A. (Susie) Houck, 87, a native of Bedford, were held July 5, 1973, at Shum-Novinger
Funeral Home conducted by Carl Cummings.
Mrs. Houck died at her home in Bedford, July 2, 1973. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Susie
[Esther] John Houck, daughter
of Alexander and Eliza Shoemaker
John, was born September 22, 1885 at Bedford, Iowa. She
attended the Bedford Public Schools and after graduating from the Bedford
High School she attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for one
year. She then taught in the schools of Taylor
County, Iowa, for a number of years. On
February 15, 1911, she was united in marriage to Walter A. [ustin] Houck and five children,
two daughters and three sons, were born to bless their home and to share
their love: Laura Esther Stephens of Bedford; John W. Houck of Seattle, Washington; Jean M. Bark of West Des Moines, Iowa; Robert J. Houck of Anaheim, Calif.; and Allan M. Houck of Olney, Maryland. She
loved her home and her family and was most happy when she was doing
something for them. She
was interested in her community, school, church and worldwide activities. She took pride in a home library and read
extensively and she loved to travel over our beloved United States. She
was a member of the Baptist Church of Bedford since 1899; a member of
the 20th Century Club since 1921; and the Golden Rule Rebekah
Lodge #134 since 1906 and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Walter A. Houck who died Oct. 2, 1966; her parents, one brother
and three sisters. She
is survived by her five children and their husbands and wives; eight
grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. She
will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her. Out-of-town

services for Truman "True" Houk,
70, of Rapid City, South Dakota, were held June 22 at Behrens Mortuary
there with the Rev. Ralph Smith officiating.
Mr. Houk died June 19, in a hospital in Rapid City. Interment was at Pine Lawn Cemetery. Houk
was born December 2, 1902, at Gravity.
He went to Rapid City in 1926 and married Ruth Muller June 8, 1935, in Rapid City. From
1945 until the time of his death, Houk was an agent for the American
General Life Insurance of Texas. He
was a member of Mount Rushmore Masonic Lodge 220, Elks Club 1187 and
the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors
include his widow, Ruth,
Rapid City; a son, John,
Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Karen Ruth) Arnold, Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, one brother,
Lee Houk Rapid City;
two sisters, Mrs. Ray Johnson,
Bedford, and Mrs. Clarence McKune,

Monday For Grace Salen Funeral
services for Mrs. Albert M. (Grace) Salen, 81, of Bedford, were held August 28 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home
in Bedford with Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs. Salen died August 25 at her home in Bedford. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Grace
Roberts Salen, daughter
of William [Marlin] and Mary [Elizabeth] Wright Roberts, was born in Taylor County, Iowa, May 17, 1891. Her
parents lived on a farm southeast of Conway, Iowa, until she was 10
years of age when they moved to Bedford where she attended the public
schools, graduating with the class of 1911. On
April 8, 1914, she was united in marriage to Albert M. [arion] Salen and two sons were born to bless this home, Marvin of Bedford and Robert [William] of Denver, Colorado. They
lived on a farm for a number of years, moving to Bedford in 1923 where
she has since continued to reside. Her
husband died February 12, 1958. She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers,
Ira Roberts and Herman
Roberts, and two sisters, who died in infancy. Left
to cherish memories of her good life are the two sons: Marvin and his wife Betty and Robert and his wife Karen;
five grandchildren: James, JoAnn, Jeffrey, Katie and Jennifer; other relatives and many friends. She
was a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church and the 19th
Century Club. She
was a kind and loving mother, friend and neighbor and she will be sadly
missed by all who knew and loved her. Bedford Times-Press Thursday February 3, 1972 p. 3 Edwin Beard, 79, Last Rites Held January 28 Funeral
services for Edwin Beard,
79, a native of Bedford, were held January 28 at Shum-Novinger Funeral
Home here conducted by Rev. Ray C. McCain.
Mr. Beard died January 26, 1972, at Rosary Hospital in Corning. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Edwin
Beard [was] born January
13, 1893, in Bedford on the homestead of Hiram Chafey Beard south of Bedford. Edwin was the second son of Lawrence Emery Beard and Nellie
Frances Myers. Other children of this union were an older
brother, George, and
three sisters, Mary, Helen, and Geraldine. Edwin
Beard was reared on the
rural farm where he continued to live and farm after his parents' death. He was schooled in the Bedford school
system and continued his quest for knowledge after graduation from Bedford
High School. In
1944 Mr. Beard moved to Bedford and resided on Dodge Street for the
remainder of his life but also maintaining his farm. Mr.
Beard became active in community groups and eventually entered public
office as Justice of the Peace, which he held approximately 20 years. He was also a prominent member of Order
of Eastern Star and Masonic Order. Mr.
Beard had two children from his first marriage to Lillian Ruth Maloy, Gordon X., now residing in Richland, Washington, and Guinivere, who passed away in 1947. His children from his second marriage
to Leona Amanda Flowers
are Donald Edwin, Danville,
Ill., and Joe Harold,
employed overseas. Mr.
Beard is survived by his wife Leona,
three sons: Gordon, Donald
and Joe; sisters, Mrs.
Harold (Helen) Blanchard,
Mrs. Joe (Geraldine) Laws,
and Mrs. Jesse (Mary) Snyder;
grandchildren: Martha Van Norman, Mrs. Dallas (Judy) Hynnek, Mrs. John (Patricia) Deaton, Mrs. Maynard (Harriett)
Harlow, Patricia Ann Beard, Cynthia Joan Beard, Paula Lynn Beard; and five great grandchildren. He
joined the Bedford Christian Church at an early age. He
had various hobbies, which included cooking, gardening, philosophical
and humorous writing and poetry, studying history and law (had a collection
of law books). He
enjoyed being with family and friends and entertaining those around
him with colorful stories of the past and his experiences. He became noted for his ability to relate his stories as well
as his ability to adopt his rhetoric to the social organization at which
he presided. His
Masonic affiliations included Taylor Lodge 156, Bedford, of which he
was Master; Triangle Chapter, 68, Bedford; Bethany Commandery, Creston;
and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Des Moines. He
had been Worthy Patron of OES in Bedford. |
