- Eliza J. John Eliza J. [ane] Shoemaker was born in Du Bois County, Illinois,
April 19, 1842. When a
child her parents moved to Henderson County, Illinois, where she resided
until early in 1866. On
Feb 15, of that year, she was united in marriage to Alexander John. To this union were born five children: Mattie I. Dowlin of Bedford; Alla J. [Frances]
Kieffer
of Lawrence, Kan.; Frank A. John of Bedford; Grace A. Kinnison of Boise, Ida.; and Susie E.
Houck
of Bedford; all of whom, with her husband, are present on this sad occasion. There are four sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law,
and twelve grandchildren, most of whom are present. In addition to the above near relatives, three brothers
and three sisters survive her.
Two sisters and a sister-in-law are present, Mrs. Ella Cunning of Pueblo, Colo., Mrs. Anna
Shoemaker
of Madrid, Neb., and Mrs. A. C. Shoemaker of Council Bluffs. Mrs. John with her husband has resided continuously
in this county for nearly half a century, and in their present home,
to which she was devotedly attached, and to whose comfort, pleasure
and happiness she so largely contributed, for a period of more than
two score years. Early in her wedded life she united with the First
Baptist Church of Bedford and has ever been in her modest way, an earnest
and active member, and a devoted wife and mother. Although an invalid for many years, her last illness
was of but one short week's duration, and almost without warning, on
June 4, instant, she quietly and peacefully passed away from her home
among the beauty and fragrance of the flowers and roses which her own
feeble hands had lovingly reared, to enjoy forever the beauty and fragrance
of her more beautiful home not made with hands. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon
at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. W. Neyman. Interment was in Fairview cemetery.
