Bedford Times-Press Thursday October 19, 1972 [p. 1] Hold Memorial Services Tuesday For Mrs. A. D. Thompson Funeral services for Mrs. Alan D. (Pauline) Thompson, 62, of Bedford, were held Tues., Oct. 17, at the Bedford Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ray McCain officiating. Mrs. Thompson died October 13, 1972, at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Pauline Carlton Thompson was born July 5, 1910 to Mr. and Mrs. C. [ecil] C. [laire] Carlton of Clearfield, Iowa. She was reared in Clearfield where she professed her faith in Christ and became a member of the Methodist Church. After finishing school in Clearfield, she continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa (now University of Northern Iowa). Following her graduation from State Teachers College she taught school for one year in Benton, Iowa, and for five years in Sidney, Iowa. On June 3, 1936, she was married to Alan D. [e Forrest] Thompson and joined the Presbyterian Church with him. To this family were born three sons: David Alan Thompson, Edward Carlton Thompson, and Michael De Forrest Thompson. Also surviving are Mrs. Edith [Buchanan] Carlton, her mother, and Mrs. Catherine Cofer, her sister. Her husband, Alan D. Thompson, father, C. C. Carlton, and a brother, Donald Edward Carlton, preceded her in death. Pauline was a member of the first Presbyterian Church in Bedford, Chapter CU of the P. E. O. Sisterhood, and the Fortnightly Club. She was a devoted wife and mother and a good neighbor. Her concerns were not only for people she knew, but also for people she would never meet in this world----the hungry, the displaced, the war weary. In failing health, she nevertheless met life with courage. Though a good woman, there was no self-righteousness in her being. As a good neighbor is sorely missed, so will she be. Bedford Times-Press Thursday March 23, 1961 [p. 1] Funeral Services For W. E. Crum, Jr. Held Tuesday Funeral services for W. E. Crum, Jr., 82, well known Bedford National Bank president, were held at the local Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Crum, who died Saturday morning at Missouri Methodist hospital in St. Joseph, had been in failing health. Burial was in Bedford's Fairview Cemetery. Included in the funeral service officiated by Rev. E. M. McGehee, local Presbyterian minister, was the following obituary: Mr. William Edwin Crum, Jr., was born August 27, 1878 in Bedford, Iowa. He passed away on Saturday, March 18, 1961, at 7:45 a.m. in the Methodist hospital, St. Joseph, Missouri. Mr. Crum was the son of W. E. Crum and Hattie Van Fleet Crum. A brother, John Van Fleet Crum preceded him in death, on May 3, 1897 and a sister Mary Crum Reynolds passed away July 22, 1950. He has one sister, Mrs. Helen Crum Thompson, living in Mexico City, Mexico. Mr. Crum was graduated from Michigan Military Academy and the University of Iowa Law School in Iowa City in 1903. After graduation he practiced law with the firm of Crum Jaqua and Crum until he entered the Banking Business in 1915. He was active in this business until his death. On August 6, 1910 he was married to Garland Clark, who survives him. He also leaves two children, William Edwin Crum III, of Bedford and Ann Crum Smith of St. Joseph, Mo. Three nieces, Hortense Reynolds Echols, Lynchburg, Va., Harriot Reynolds Noble, Roslyn, New York; Virginia Crum Rosenblueth, Mexico City, Mexico; one nephew, William Crum Thompson, Paris, France; five grandsons, Jon Clark Crum, Denver, Colo., William Edwin Crum IV, Michael Crum, Steven Crum, Bedford, Iowa; William Crum Swinehart of St. Joseph, Mo., and a cousin, Rex V. Porter of Oskaloosa, Iowa. Bedford Times-Press Thursday November 29, 1956 [p. 1] John Thompson Dies In West John [Morrow] Thompson, 79, a former resident of Bedford, died November 19 in Alhambra, Calif., after having been in failing health for some time. Last rites were held there and at a later date the ashes will be sent to Bedford for burial in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Thompson is survived by a daughter [Virginia], who lives in Boston; a son [William Crum] in Paris; one sister and one brother, Mrs. Mary Richardson and Ralph W. Thompson of Bedford. Bedford Times-Press Thursday December 26, 1968 [p. 1] Death Takes Alan D. Thompson, Well Known Local Businessman Death came unexpectedly Sunday to Alan D. Thompson, 60, of Bedford. Thompson, well-known head of the Thompson shoe department, died of a heart attack at the store with which he had been closely associated most of his life. Except for his military service in World War II, which included duty in the South Pacific, "Andy," as he was called by his hundreds of friends here and in southwestern Iowa, spent most of his life in Bedford. An avid sports enthusiast, he was active in athletics in Bedford High and was an accomplished tennis and golf player. Thompson, a Presbyterian, served his church in many official capacities, was a member and past president of the Bedford Country Club, a charter member of the local Lions Club, long time city park board member and community booster. In addition to his wife, Pauline, he is survived by three sons, David, Edward, and Michael, and by Richard, a brother, and Carrolle, a sister, of Bedford. Other immediate survivors are sisters Julia (Mrs. Edwin Griswold) of Wheaton, Ill.; Edith (Mrs. Harry Jordan) of San Mateo, Calif., and brother, Charles, of Clarinda. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Bedford Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. John D. Kerr. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Bedford Times-Press Thursday January 2, 1969 [p. 1] Final Rites Held December 27 For Alan D. Thompson Funeral services for Alan D. Thompson, 60, of Bedford, well known businessman, were held at the Bedford Presbyterian Church December 27 with Rev. John D. Kerr officiating. Mr. Thompson died suddenly on December 22, 1968. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Alan de Forrest Thompson was born April 10, 1906, in Bedford. He was the fifth child of Seth Edward and Adelaide Stratton Thompson. After attending public school here, he was graduated from Bedford High School in 1925 after establishing himself as a gifted athlete and ardent sports enthusiast. Following graduation he entered the family business as a third generation member of BedfordÕs pioneer merchant family. As manager of the shoe department and subsequently as co-manager of the store and vice-president of the corporation he became one of Bedford's best-known and most highly esteemed business and civic leaders. For 43 years his close association with worthy community programs was interrupted only twice: once for a period of specialized business training in Chicago and again for army service during World War II. For two years he served with distinction as an active participant in the Asiatic Theatre of Operations, particularly in New Guinea and the Philippines. On June 3, 1936, he and the former Pauline Carlton, also of Bedford, were joined in marriage. Three sons were born of this union: David Alan, Edward Carlton, and Michael de Forrest. Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by a brother, James Stratton, of Chicago, and a sister, Mary Elinor Hillyer, of Evanston, Illinois. He is survived by Mrs. Thompson and their three sons; by two brothers, Richard Hedrick of Bedford, and Charles Edward of Clarinda; and by three sisters: Julia Adelaide Griswold, of Wheaton, Illinois; Katharine Carrolle, of Bedford, and Edith Marian Jordan, of San Mateo, California. Mr. Thompson led a full life of the highest integrity. He served as a Ruling Elder of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, and had served on the Board of Deacons. Always a firm supporter of wholesome recreation for the youth of Bedford, he served long and faithfully as a member of the Park Board. He loved golf and throughout his life he strove to appreciate the best traditions of this game, which his father had first introduced into Taylor County. He was a past president and director of the Bedford Country Club, and was a charter member and past president of the Bedford Lions Club. |
