OBITUARY - ROBERT J. WALKUP
Robert J. WALKUP was born May 2, 1923 to Glenn WALKUP and Gladys CORDELL WALKUP in rural Bedford, Iowa. Robert grew to maturity in Bedford and attended the Bedford schools and was a member of East Mission Church. He graduated from high school in 1941 at Blockton Public School.
After graduation, Robert enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served during World War II overseas, earning several distinguished medals. He was discharged from the Army on Jan. 6, 1946.
On Dec. 24, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary L. MATHENY at Bedford, and they lived in Blockton, Iowa, all their married lives. To this union three children were born, Diana, Brenda and Robert Ray.
Robert was employed by the United States Postal Service for 34 years and also was engaged in farming.
Robert died at Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on June 21, 1986.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Gladys WALKUP; his wife's parents, Joe MATHANEY and Hazel MILLER; and two brothers-in-law, Robert DENTON and Gerald ANDERSON.
Left to cherish his memory are: wife, Mary L. WALKUP; daughters, Diana and husband, Terry SON and Brenda MURPHY; and son, Robert R. WALKUP and wife, Misty; granddaughters - Susan MURPHY, Minda WALSTON and Tory WALKUP; grandsons, Alan ENGLAND and Edward WALSTON; also, four
brothers and their families, Harold, Donald, Ralph and Wilbur WALKUP; and a sister, Pauline DENTON.
Robert was a member of Blockton Methodist Church, Blockton Legion Post #433, and Creston VFW. He greatly enjoyed his family, friends and spectator sports, and watching his flowers develop and mature. One of his greatest enjoyments was his grandchildren. During the last days one in particular was the youngest, Tory Rae WALKUP. He looked forward to her visits.
Robert was a kind and generous man, and a considerate and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services were held Tuesday, June 24 at the Blockton United Methodist Church. Military services were held in Rose Hill Cemetery at Blockton.
