OBITUARY - ROBERT J. WALKUP
 
Robert J. WALKUP was born May 2, 1923 to Glenn WALKUP and Gladys CORDELL WALKUP in rural Bedford, Iowa. Robert grew to maturity in Bedford and attended the Bedford schools and was a member of East Mission Church. He graduated from high school in 1941 at Blockton Public School.
 
After graduation, Robert enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served during World War II overseas, earning several distinguished medals. He was discharged from the Army on Jan. 6, 1946.
 
On Dec. 24, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary L. MATHENY at Bedford, and they lived in Blockton, Iowa, all their married lives. To this union three children were born, Diana, Brenda and Robert Ray.
 
Robert was employed by the United States Postal Service for 34 years and also was engaged in farming.
 
Robert died at Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on June 21, 1986.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Gladys WALKUP; his wife's parents, Joe MATHANEY and Hazel MILLER; and two brothers-in-law, Robert DENTON and Gerald ANDERSON.
 
Left to cherish his memory are: wife, Mary L. WALKUP; daughters, Diana and husband, Terry SON and Brenda MURPHY; and son, Robert R. WALKUP and wife, Misty; granddaughters - Susan MURPHY, Minda WALSTON and Tory WALKUP; grandsons, Alan ENGLAND and Edward WALSTON; also, four
brothers and their families, Harold, Donald, Ralph and Wilbur WALKUP; and a sister, Pauline DENTON.
 
Robert was a member of Blockton Methodist Church, Blockton Legion Post #433, and Creston VFW. He greatly enjoyed his family, friends and spectator sports, and watching his flowers develop and mature. One of his greatest enjoyments was his grandchildren. During the last days one in particular was the youngest, Tory Rae WALKUP. He looked forward to her visits.
 
Robert was a kind and generous man, and a considerate and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
 
Services were held Tuesday, June 24 at the Blockton United Methodist Church. Military services were held in Rose Hill Cemetery at Blockton.

Obituary: Mrs L.F. Wertz
Lodesca Florence Cavender was born Nov 27, 1855 in Dubois county, Indiana, and died Friday, Nov 16, 1945, at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 15 days, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Grover Mohler in Bedford [Iowa].
She was the daughter of JOHN and MARTHA CAVENDER, and in early childhood came with her parents to Taylor County where she grew to womanhood and was married to Wm. Shelby Dougherty in 1874.
To them were born seven children: Leona Carmichael of Klein, Montana; Ora Elbert Dougherty, deceased; Stella Wamsley of Kansas City; Nellie Dougherty, deceased; Bertha Goudie and Cordie Mohler of Bedford; Horace Dougherty of North English, Iowa.
She was the stepmother of two children, Monroe Dougherty, deceased and Mary Alice Thomas of Kansas City. Surviving with the children are twenty grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
Mr Dougherty died in December, 1900. She was married to Cornelius Wertz in November, 1905. He died in May, 1920.
The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev O.H. Hallgrimson. Burial was in Memory cemetery, New Market.

HOLD SERVICES FOR FLORENCE WILBOURN
Florence Wilbourn, 73, who had been a resident of the Taylor county home the past three years, died March 30. Funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev Robert M. Peters. Burial was in the Bedford cemetery. There were no relatives.
