Wilmarth, James Allen - Funeral services for Jim Wilmarth, age 50 of Bedford, who died Friday, September 19, 2008 as the result of an automobile accident will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7. Interment will be held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Instead of flowers, the family request memorials be given in Jim’s name. Memories can be shared with the family on our website at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

James Allen Wilmarth was born March 5, 1958 in Corning, Iowa the son of Neill and Donna (Nolte) Wilmarth. Jim lived in Brooks, Iowa throughout his childhood years and attended Brooks Country School. After closing the country school, Jim attended school in Corning. In 1972, the family purchased the Bedford farm where he currently lived and moved to Bedford; he graduated a few years later in 1976.
During his high school years, he met Pamela Sue Roberts and was married on March 3, 1979 in Maryville, Missouri. It was then that Jim inherited his nickname, Willie, with his in-laws due to their being two Jims in the family. Jim and Pam loved spending time with their friends and each other. They loved playing cards and pool, attending dances, riding motorcycles, and going to the movies. Jim was an avid fisherman. He loved the nature and spending time in the outdoors. He enjoyed going deer hunting with his friends, especially his dear friend Merrill Davenport. Jim also loved farming; he was always outside “tinkering” with something. He was known for patching old things together to make it work instead of buying new.
After graduating, Jim worked for his Dad and Uncle Harold at the Farmer’s Elevator in Hopkins, Missouri. Jim and Pam started their family in 1982, when their daughter Tricia Marie, was born on January 4, 1982. Pam recalls that on the way to the hospital Jim kept saying that he had to have his hair cut before “this baby came.” So on the way to St. Joseph, they stopped in Maryville to get his hair cut! This will be a time that will never be forgotten as it was the coldest day of the year when they brought Tricia home. The wind chill was 75 degrees below that day!
Jim’s family became complete when he was blessed with his boy, Bryan Neill, on October 7, 1985. Jim told Pam that they had the perfect family, a girl and a boy. He was just as proud as he could be.
Jim and Pam spent the next years raising their family and watching their children grow up. Many nights were spent playing cards with their family and friends. At the end of the night, their main argument was, “Whose turn is it to drive home?”
The next years of his life were spent working for Farris and Patsy Gray of Bedford; the Lisles Corporation in Clarinda, Iowa and later he began working at the Maryville Treatment Center as a Correctional Officer, a position he held for the past ten years. He made many new friends with co-workers while working there.
His easy going personality allowed him to have many friends in life. Jim enjoyed a good joke as well passing it along to others. Jim was always willing to stop and help those in need. His passion in life was raising his family and being with his friends. On the farm, Jim and Pam enjoyed riding four-wheelers on nice days. On weekends, he was known to go gambling with some of his gambling “buddies.” He loved spending time with his little buddy, Quentin Duley, and watching all the nieces and nephews play. He loved babies and couldn’t wait to hold them before Pam had the opportunity.
Jim and Pam made many memories together; several of these were made during their travels. They took many of these trips with family and friends. Jim especially enjoyed their cruise with brother and sister n’ law, Mike and Julie Duley to the Bahamas’ and later they traveled to Hawaii with friends, Jim and Marlene Florea. Jim was making plans to go on another cruise for their 30th Wedding Anniversary.
Jim was loved by a large family and many friends. Left to cherish Jim’s memory are his wife, Pam Wilmarth, and daughter, Tricia Wilmarth of Bedford; a son, Bryan Wilmarth of Creston; his father and step-mother, Neill and Pat Wilmarth of Forsyth, Missouri; a sister, Kay Fahlgren of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Elaine Wilmarth of Maryville, Missouri; his mother and father-in-law, Jim and Sue Barcus of Hopkins, Missouri; along with many in-laws, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and so many friends.
Preceding Jim in death are his mother, Donna in 1975; maternal grandparents, George and Lucille Nolte; paternal grandfather, Vern Wilmarth; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Schmitz; a niece, Kristen Barcus; and sister-in-law, Cindy Tribolet.

Jim was a devoted husband, father and good friend.
His enthusiasm, humor and kindness will be missed by his family.

May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Jim’s passing.

Following the divorce of his parents, Jim moved to California with his mother. As a teenager, Jim was a champion swimmer in the Phoenix, AZ, area, acquiring many trophies to attest to his talent. Jim joined the United States Marine Corps at age 18 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA, and in Hawaii during his three years of service. Following his discharge from the military, he moved to Everett, Washington, where he met and married Marlene Fischer. From this union one son, James Dale Ward, III., was born. Jim was a carpenter and house-builder until a back injury caused him to pursue other work. After Jim and Marlene divorced, Jim moved to Oregon to work in the produce business. In the early 90s, Jim moved to California to work with his mother Ruth in her produce brokerage business and remained near her throughout their business career.

Jim loved to travel and frequently talked about adventurous trips to Alaska and Canada, a business trip to China, and a trip to the Masters Golf Tournament in Scotland with his Uncle Spence. He made frequent trips to Las Vegas and planned to return to Alaska for a vacation next year. Hugh Raymond Warner, Jr., or Junior as everyone called him, was born October 10, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Hugh R. Warner, Sr., and Lucille (Barnes) Warner. He grew up in the Des Moines area where he attended school and worked at the Standard Service Station. Kathie Dukes lived a few doors down the street from the service station and walked by the station daily . . . . this led into a courtship which led into marriage on January 25, 1981.

In 1976, the family moved to Lenox where Junior worked construction for a number of years, then he had a body shop in Corning. He also owned JR’s Restaurant, and later J & K service station in Lenox. For the past several years, Junior had been active buying and selling on E-Bay as well as area flea markets. In his younger years, Junior enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and was always working on cars. Junior ‘never knew a stranger’ and always enjoyed visiting with everyone. Most times you could see him around town driving his scooter . . . he didn’t like winters because there was no snow plow to put on the front of it for him to get around! Junior especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Walter, Julian - Funeral services for Julian Walter, age 87, of Lenox, who died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the Lenox Care Center will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox. Visitation will be at the United Methodist Church from5:00 to 8:00 with the family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be held at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials can be given in Julian’s name. Memories can be shared with the family on our website at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.

Julian Walter was born December 15, 1920, in Long Beach, California to parents Louis N. and Lulu Ely Walter and passed away on May 6, 2008, after a long illness.

He was the youngest child born to this family. His family lived part of each year in Long Beach due to his older brother’s need for special medical care. As a result, he grew up attending grade schools in Long Beach, in Lenox, and at Mercer #8 country school in Adams County.

Julian attended all four years of high school in Lenox where, as a freshman, he met Josephine Beach, the young girl who was to become his wife and life-long companion. He graduated from Lenox High School in May 1939, then headed to southern California to attend Fullerton Junior College. While he valued education his heart remained in Iowa with Josephine and the farm. Summer of 1940 found him back in the Midwest. He knew his future was there on the farm with his bride.

He asked Josephine to be his wife and they were married in the Beach family farm house on December 29, 1940. When Julian married into the very large Beach family he allowed that “it took pretty much getting used to.” He kept his own family close, embraced his new family, and created a loving family of his own. To Julian Walter, family was everything.

They began their life together living in the house on the family farm five miles northwest of Lenox. Three children were born to them; Marvin and Jean and Joan. They lived and farmed there for 57 years, raising their children, watching and helping them go off to college, get married and start their own homes. 1977 was a big year on the farm. A new house, designed by Jo and Julian was built just west of the old farm house. It provided spacious and comfortable country living for them, the kids and the grandkids when they came to visit.

During his farming career, Julian learned the latest developments in farming by studying books and papers from Iowa State University agricultural extension services. In 1975 the farm attained the stature of a Century Farm – one that had been in the same family for 100 years, having been purchased by Julian’s grandfather, Henri Walter, and farmed by three generations. Julian took pride in his careful stewardship of the land.

Julian was an accomplished piano player and a certified pilot of small planes in the 1940’s. He loved making music and flying.

Julian and Josephine knew how to work hard and how to have fun together – square dancing, playing cards, socializing with friends – and even churning butter in a very unusual way! Wallace, Gordon Chandler - Memorial services for Gordon Wallace age 90 of Gravity, who died Saturday, September 1, 2007 Colton, California were held Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial of ashes was held in the Washington Cemetery in Gravity. Memorials can be directed to “The Quiet Hour” ministry in care of the family. Memories can be shared with the family on our website at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Gordon Chandler Wallace was born July 28, 1917, to Kent and Hazel Chandler Wallace in a rural Gravity, Iowa farmhouse built by his grandfather. He attended school for 9 years in gravity and then attended Oak Park Academy in Nevada, Iowa for the next 3 years. Gordon attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska for the next 4 years, graduating in 1440 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He attended Nebraska State University until 1944, when he graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery.

Gordon then moved to Boulder, Colorado and bought an existing dental practice. He soon met Leta Corrine Turner at a church picnic in Denver where they were married within a year and spent the next 26 years in Boulder. His dental practice was interrupted for two years by a call from the US Air Force in 1955. He was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico as a Major in the Dental Unit. Gordon then returned to Boulder to resume his private practice until 1971, when he received a call from the Clarinda Complex Treatment Center to replace their retiring dentist. Although Gordon practiced dentistry for 38 years, he was a farmer at heart which made the decision easy to return to his birthplace and the home farm. He retired from dentistry in 1982, and remained in Gravity until November 2006, when he moved to California to be closer to family.

Gordon was active in many church projects, originated the Boulder, Colorado 35-member men’s chorus, spent many years as head elder, often preached the sermon when the church pastor had conflicting obligations, and was a board member for Union College. He never turned down a bowl of popcorn, was a kind and gracious man, laughed easily – even at himself, and often took the short end of a deal so that others would benefit.

Gordon is survived by his wife Leta, son Gregory Winston Kent (Un) of Colton, CA, daughter Debra Lou Winkle (Greg) of Napa, CA, 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandson from son Gregory, sister-in-law Marilyn, and nephews Earl Mark (Lisa) and Gordon Joel (Patti) Wallace.

Wright, Marjorie May Hughes - Marjorie May Wright was born May 10, l922, in Ord, Nebraska, to Paul and Eva May (Shephard) Hughes. She lived there until age 15 when the family moved to Clarinda. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1939. During the years after high school, Marjorie taught in country schools. On October 15, 1942, she was married to Verl Boyd Wright in Maryville, Missouri. She and Verl worked in a Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings, Nebraska, during the war. They moved back to New Market and in 1945 bought the family farm where they lived until Verl's death in 1993. Marjorie decided to move to Clarinda a short time later and picked a nice house on the boulevard to make her home for the next 11 years. When her health began to fail, she moved to Hillsboro, Oregon to live with her daughter Susan.

Marjorie and Verl were blessed with three children, Keith, Bob, and Susan. They were a busy farm family that raised livestock, grain and chickens. She always had a large garden and her loved roses. The family was very involved in 4-H where Marjorie was a leader for many years. As the seven grandchildren came along, she enjoyed the role of Grandma and always having snacks on hand and glad for their visits. She was an excellent cook and made the best fried chicken and mashed potatoes around.

Marjorie was a talented lady and everything she did, she did well. She was a beautiful seamstress; crocheted many cozy Afghans and made candles. She was meticulous in her search for genealogy information and compiled several branches of family history. Her greatest love was her china painting. Her pieces are enjoyed by all who are privileged to have them today. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Clarinda.

She passed away on July 18, 2009, in Beaverton, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verl; sister, Doris Knowles; and her parents. She is survived by her children, Keith and Patty Wright, Robert and Jane Wright and Susan and Kevin Mellott, her sister, Evelyn McKay, brother, Roy Hughes, seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Public visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, in Clarinda, Iowa. Private Interment will be held at the Old Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa.
