Neumeyer, Richard Arthur - Funeral services for Richard Neumeyer, age 84 of Bedford, who died Sunday, May 7, 2006 at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska were held Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 10:30.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bedford with Reverend William Ballard officiating. Interment with military rites accorded by the John F. Hardin American Legion Post No. 164 were held in the Hopkins Cemetery.

Richard Arthur Neumeyer was born May 17, 1921, in Polk Township, Taylor County, Iowa the son of Henry Elmer Neumeyer and Constance A. (Florea) Neumeyer. He grew up attending rural schools to the eighth grade and then went to work as a hired man in the High Prairie Community. In 1940, he went to work for his future father-in-law, Bruce Clymens. In January of 1943, Richard answered the call to serve his country by entering the United States Army, he and a bunch of other men loaded up in front of the Taylor County Courthouse late one January evening and headed off to serve their country, taking their training in Fort Warren, Wyoming. Richard was soon sent overseas to Greenland where he served for three years during World War II with the Quartermaster Corps. Upon his discharge in January of 1946, he returned to the area where he again worked as a hired man. Now, when Richard first went to work for Edra’s father she was a junior in high school, upon his return from the service, she had graduated high school and was teaching in the Valley School Neighborhood. On May 25, 1947, Richard was united in marriage to Edra Clymens at the United Methodist Church in Bedford.

Soon after their marriage the couple rented some land near the school Edra was teaching at and began farming. In those days, the farming began on a shoestring – they had been given a jersey cow from Edra’s father and a shorthorn cow from Richard’s father, and that, along with some borrowed machinery, and they were off and running on their farming and cattle career! In the 1950’s they moved east of Bedford where they farmed for ten years and in the 60’s they were finally able to purchase their own 171 acres north of Bedford known as the McDowell farm in Marshall Township, located 1½ miles west of the county home. Together they would farm this land, raising cattle and hogs and enjoying the good life. In 1987, Richard suffed health problems, having open heart surgery, and it was then he and Edra decided to retire and move into town, purchasing their current home in Bedford in 1990. Always a ‘farmer at heart’ Richard continued to mow his lawn and tend his garden in the true farmer’s way. He meticulously taking care of his lawn, garden and the beloved John Deere equipment! Although Richard and Edra had no children of their own, they truly enjoyed their nieces and nephews. During Edra’s teaching years, Richard loved to hear the tales about the children at school, he seemed to thoroughly enjoy sharing in their lives.

Richard was a life time member of the Taylor County Historical Society; a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church; past member of the Gravity Fire Department and the Taylor County Conservation Club. He was also a member of the Taylor County Farm Bureau and the John F. Hardin American Legion Post No. 164. Richard was a Mason and a member of the Plumb Masonic Lodge No. 285 A.F. and A.M., located in Siam. For many years, Richard and Edra loved belonging to the Gravity Promenades Square Dancing Club. Together with their friends they shared many dances and good memories. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as gathering Indian artifacts.

Left to cherish Richard’s memory are his loving wife of 59 years, Edra Neumeyer of Bedford; three brothers, Sidney Neumeyer of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; George Neumeyer of Hopkins, Missouri; and Howard Neumeyer of Caldwell, Idaho; along with many nieces, nephews and a whole community of friends.

Preceding Richard in death were his parents Henry and Constance Neumeyer; a brother Jason Neumeyer; and two sisters, Verna McDonald and Louise Archer.

Nally, Ashley Renee - Funeral services for Ashley Nally, age 21 of Bedford who died as the result of a car accident on Friday, January 14, 2005 were held on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bedford High School Gymnasium. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Monday from Noon to 8:00 p.m. Interment was held at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Ashley Renee Nally was born May 24, 1983, in Corning, Iowa, the daughter of Dan and Cindy Nally, sister to Jeremy Nally.

Ashley lived in Blockton, Iowa throughout her childhood years, and attended school at the Bedford Community Schools. During high school, Ashley and her family moved to a new house outside of Bedford. Ashley graduated from Bedford High School in 2002. She continued her education at Northwest Missouri State University, in Maryville, Missouri, where she was working toward a double major in Elementary Education and Special Education. She absolutely loved children and especially enjoyed teaching them and helping them learn new things. Her studies included a lot of classroom time where she was consistently praised about how well she worked with the children. Ashley was a junior at Northwest and was planning to graduate in the fall of 2006.

Throughout her school years, Ashley was involved in and dedicated to many school activities and athletics. She was active in volleyball, basketball, track, and softball. She also took dance at the Jean Blair Dance Studio in Bedford for fifteen years. Ashley excelled in all of these and won awards and honors too many to mention. Her competitive spirit was evident to anyone who watched her play. But more than any of that, she loved the time that she spent with her teammates on and off the court, field, or track.

Ashley was said, by her friends, to be the “organizer” when it came to spending time together. The “queen of sleep overs” always had a plan for everyone and it usually included about ten girls spending the night at her house. Ashley and her friends always made the time they spent together a fun time. Fortunately, they often left evidence of their fun on videotapes, which are now used as entertainment for her family.

Even with a schedule full of school activities and friends, Ashley found time to earn her way in the world. Ashley was always babysitting for someone or cleaning houses. She was also employed at MG Machining during her senior year of high school. She also worked part-time at Godfather’s Pizza.

Ashley truly enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Whether it was playing games, eating out, or cleaning and organizing their homes. She had so much energy that people often asked her if she could ever just “sit down.” She could usually be found in a cute sweat suit (that she just had to have) and a ponytail in her hair. One of her newest hobbies was playing with her nephew, Micah. She was always able to make him laugh.

Ashley continued her athletic career at Northwest Missouri State University where she was a member of the Track and Field team for three years. During this time, Ashley created many new friendships and bonds with new teammates and coaches.

While running track at Northwest, she met Jason Starnes, who would soon become the love of her life, best friend, and fiancé. While on a trip to visit Jason’s family in Texas, they secretly purchased a new puppy, Tucker. In December of 2003, they were engaged to be married while on a weekend trip to Kansas City for Christmas. The date was set for June 11, 2005. Jason and Ashley purchased a home in Bedford, Iowa, where she quickly began decorating, organizing, and cleaning her own home, as well as planning a very pink wedding.

Ashley was loved by a large family, many friends, classmates, and teammates. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Left to cherish Ashley’s memory are her parents, Dan and Cindy Nally, brother, Jeremy Nally, sister-in-law, Erin Nally, nephew, Micah Nally, fiancé, Jason Starnes, grandparents, Dave and LuElla Nally, Glenna Mae Weed, great-grandfather, Glen Lock, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and loved ones.

Preceding Ashley in death is her grandfather Marven Weed, great grandparents, Wilma Lock, Lonnie and Gertrude Weed, Kenneth and Emily Thomas, Norvel and Alice Nally, uncle, David Nally, aunt, Marla Mae Weed, and friend Shawna Zech.

May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Ashley’s passing.

Nash, Dorothy Charlotte Snyder - Funeral services for Dorothy Nash, age 97 of Sheridan, Missouri, who died Monday, June 2, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri were held Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford, Iowa. Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Dorothy Charlotte Snyder Nash was born the second of seven children to Carl A. and Florence (Keith) Snyder on January 18, 1911 in Bedford, Iowa. She left her loving family at the age of 97, on June 2, 2008.

Dorothy grew up attending Bedford School. This is where she met her lifelong friend and future husband, Archie LeRoy (Roy) Nash. They married on August 4, 1927, and were blessed with two children; Mary Ann in 1931 and Richard Allen in 1934.

Living in the Bedford and Conway areas, the young couple settled into rural life. Although raised as a ‘town girl’, Dorothy loved the farm life. She would walk a mile and a half to town carrying eggs and cream and return with the staples that she would purchase. She worked along side Roy in the fields and with the livestock as they grew their farming operation. In 1939, they moved to Parnell, Missouri where they purchased the farm that they would call home. They continued farming until the 1970’s when they retired and moved to Sheridan, Missouri.

Dorothy saw many changes in her lifetime – from farming with a special mule named Tom to purchasing a new Ford tractor and watching the world become computer operated. Although she had a cell phone, she decided she had learned enough and did not need to learn to ‘text’ the great-grandchildren!

Dorothy raised a big garden and spent hours keeping the weeds hoed out. In the spring, she would pick strawberries to sell in town for 35 cents a quart. And it wasn’t just a regular quart – she always heaped it up so that if one berry was bad there would be a few extra to replace it.

The grandkids remember many hours spent playing Pinochle, three card pitch and Yahtzee. The dice were kept in an old Rx bottle lined with masking tape; it was quieter that way.

Dorothy and Roy did many things together. They bowled in Bedford and fished whenever they could. Dorothy was an avid fisherman – but didn’t care too much to eat them – instead, it was the thrill of the catch! After retirement, their travel trailer took them many places including Branson, Lake of the Ozarks, ‘up to Bedford or Clarinda’, and an especially memorable trip to the west coast. They enjoyed visiting with people and making new friends. In 2006, Dorothy returned to Branson for a visit, and could hardly believe all the changes that had been made.

Dorothy was able to live independently for nearly all of her life. There was little that she couldn’t do if she set her mind to it. She mowed her yard with a push mower until she was 92 years old. When she didn’t need the big vegetable garden, she proved she had a green thumb for flowers as well. She attended lots of her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s ballgames, and could always be found with one tuned in on the TV or the radio. Baseball and basketball were her favorites.

In later years, Dorothy could often be found at the Legion Hall in Bedford or Lenox playing BINGO. It became her passion and she was often a winner – seldom ever missing a number that was called.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Roy, in 1989; her parents, Sisters Doris Croy and Aneth Lucksinger; Brothers, Lex, Carl, Jr., and Donald (Ed); Son-in-law, Edward (Skip) Cassavaugh, Daughter-in-law, Donna Nash and Granddaughter, Rose Marie Cassavaugh Kottas.

Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Mary Ann Cassavaugh of Hopkins, Missouri; and Richard Nash of Ardmore, Oklahoma; a brother, Jay Snyder (Irene) of Diagonal, Iowa; two sister-in-laws, Vida Snyder of Winterset, Iowa; and Myrtle Snyder of Diagonal, Iowa; six grandchildren, Allen (Valerie) Cassavaugh of Hopkins, Missouri; Glenda (Steve) Stockwell of Bedford; Cheryl (Louis) Birkenholz of Hopkins, Missouri; Vickie (Kevin) Fox of Alvarado, Texas; Roy Lee Nash of Morrisville, North Carolina; and Todd (Felicia) Nash of Austin, Texas; eleven great-grand children; ten great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Neumeyer, Sidney "Sid" Homer - Surrounded by family who filled his life with love and happiness, Sidney (Sid) Homer Neumeyer peacefully passed away at his home in Bonners Ferry, Idaho of natural causes on December 16, 2008.
Sid was a simple man who tinkered with many found items, finding a way to make it work with no master plan. He was the ultimate recycler-Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. He would always share his “Neumeyerisms” if you were in ear shot; most of which were too colorful to repeat here.
Sid was born in Bedford, Iowa on August 16, 1916 to Henry and Constance Neumeyer. Farming was the livelihood to his family of four brothers and two sisters. His stories of growing up made the hard work sound like play as he was able to do the chores with his brothers and friends.
In his early twenties he ventured out west to Oregon and Idaho to visit his uncles, Fred and Frank Florea. He returned to the mid west to join the Army in May of 1941. Sid served his entire tour of duty at Fort Kamehameha, Hawaii-across from Pearl Harbor. On December 7th he had just returned to his barracks from breakfast, coming off duty, when he saw the Japanese pilots flying so low he could see them in the cockpit. He returned to Idaho after the war, working the harvest in many of the local drainage districts.
On one of his visits “back home” to Iowa, he met his wife, Eunice (Penton) while at a country dance. She came west for a visit and the rest is history. They were married October 6, 1951 in Bonners Ferry.
Sid excelled at operating heavy equipment and prided himself on his natural ability to level a grade better than any engineer had measured on many projects, such as road building or landscaping. Among others, he worked for Lipp & Ehrmantrout Excavating and retired from the city street and sewer department of Bonners Ferry in 1978.
He loved the outdoors, playing baseball (even into his 70’s), fishing, hunting, picking huckleberries, working his garden and Sunday drives. Until death did they part, Sid and Eunice resided at their little bit of paradise in the so named region of Boundary County where they raised four children and nurtured their family tree of numerous family members and friends.
Sid is survived by his wife Eunice; children: Dean (Holly), Fairbanks, AK; Jean (Gus) Diel, Bonners Ferry, ID; Shelley (Gary) Hanzen, Coeur d Alene, ID; Steve (Ronna), Bonners Ferry; two brothers: George of Hopkins, MO and Howard of Council, ID. Grandchildren: Tammy Peterson, Kristina Westbrook, Laura (Chad) Kimball, Katie, Becky and Heidi Diel, Derek, Hayden and Taylor Hanzen, Joe, Kendra and Ben Neumeyer, five great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Joyce had a unique gift of sewing and quilting. A special trip was made this year by Joyce, Vi, Lori and Amanda to the Quilt Coupe. She also was a great cook and loved to garden. Her grandchildren loved spending time on the farm and have fond memories of riding ponies and picking out a kitty to take home.
Joyce is lovingly remembered by her mother, Vi McCullough, her husband Ken, both of Blockton; daughter Lori and her husband Randy Hunt of Milwaukee, WI; son Kevin and his wife Kris of Lacona, IA; daughter Kelly and her husband Robert Scott of Davenport, IA. To these marriages came her nine grandchildren; Doug, Amanda, Nick, Nathan, Kent, Camille, Alyssa, Bradlee and Dustin. Joyce was also graced with two great grandchildren; Sophie and Caden.
