Dan Wiebesiek officiating. A reception will be held at the family residence 300 East State Street following the service. Memorials may be directed to Glenn Gray Memorial Fund or to the Compassionate Care Hospice. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on our website at, www.ritchiefuneralhome.com under Obituaries. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa.
Glenn Wayne Gray was born July 4, 1926, in Gravity, Iowa, to George and Phemie (Roush) Gray. He spent his early life in Siam, Bedford, and Clarinda Iowa with some time in Missouri. His parents moved often as George farmed for others. Glenn was always pointing out places where he had lived. He attended school in Siam and Bedford and lettered in football at Bedford High.
Glenn worked many jobs, starting from an early age. This is why he could fix anything later in life. Prior to joining the Navy he worked for Parris & Dunn Company making training rifles for the armed forces. From 1944-1946, he served in the Navy on USS LST’s.
After the war, he worked on many jobs and met Doris Thompson and they were married July 10, 1947 in Bentonville, Arkansas. They were blessed with 63 years of marriage. Once they were settled in Clarinda, Glenn became Mr. Fix It and The Good Neighbor. People brought all sorts of electrical appliances for repair. He would build for others or go to a farm to help with whatever his friend needed to get done. He could build fence, build a shed, and help with butchering. Ray was born in 1949 and Glenna in 1952.
In 1963, Glenn took his family to California for vacation but he had other plans as well. He had worked for the county for many years and went to Lisle’s but he was not a factory kind of guy. In California he put his Mr. Fix It to work. He went to work for the local school district and worked his way up to becoming the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds. Glenn again made many friends with the neighbors. At his retirement after 25 years of service to the school district, he was referred to as a gentleman in the classical sense of the word. Glenn was a caring person who did the impossible as if it were simple and routine. He was always honest and diligent and wanted things done right. Settling in Cottonwood, Arizona, he watched over the couple across the street and cared for both of them to their deaths.
Glenn loved sports and always watched football and golf on T.V. He and Doris played golf and bowled together. They loved to travel in the motor home and loved camping with friends and relatives. Glenn would know everyone in the park before he left. Glenn and Doris cared for those around them and had friendships all over the United States and Canada.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Glenna Jean Gray; brothers, Kenneth Gray, Alvin Gray; sisters, Bonnie Gray and Elva Gray.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Doris Gray of Clarinda, Iowa; son, Ray Estel Gray of Canyon County, California; granddaughter, Melinda Jean Gray of Canyon County, California; sister, Fern Jones and husband Harry of Dickinson, Texas; nieces, nephews and many friends.
Glenn was a Good Neighbor and cared for those around him.
He will be missed by friends and family but the memories be in our hearts forever.
May the Lord strengthen and comfort those that mourn his passing. |

Thelma Claudine Severn was born in Bellwood, Nebraska to Alpha and Laura Belle (Spoonemore) Severn on June 21, 1921. She grew up in Lenox, Iowa.
Following her marriage to Allan Ivan Gillette on June 5, 1939 in Leavenworth, Kansas, the couple headed for the bright lights of bustling Davenport. Soon after, Thelma set about creating a painfully clean, loving and vibrant home for Ivan, six rambunctious children and an occasional raccoon. As a cook, baker and seamstress she had few peers.
Thelma and Ivan were founding members of Christ United Methodist Church and supported the Christian Women’s Club and the Salvation Army over decades. Together they marshaled church volunteers for the Christ United Methodist food tent at the annual Mississippi Valley Fair and helped feed the less fortunate at the Salvation Army.
